What a dinner! Pork Schnitzel, spaetzle, sauerkraut...
    Drew K.

We've been to Duna once before. Motto should be: GOOD FOOD TAKES TIME. And I'm a very harsh critic of Hungarian food seeing as how my grandmother was a HONGARIAN and she made the very BEST of the BEST. SO FINE! Last time we were there the restaurant was busy. The food took absolutely forever to arrive but it was very delicious. And a very apologetic owner/chef came out to see that we were ok. When does that ever happen? That's class! Now, a year later, we live in COVID land and we were craving some schnitzel for our once a week order out. We called the place and it just so happened it was his first day back!! The menu was wrong, he made some substitutions, and we had to wait about 30 minutes to get out order...but the food was AWESOME! Schnitzel was giant and super. Crispy and delicious. Spaetzle and sauerkraut were both BOSS! We had leftovers for another day as well. Highly recommend (but they are slow and twice is a trend). Also a note to the owner: fix your online presence immediately and get your ass on social media! Hire some help. This will make a big difference for your bottom line and we want you to stick around!!!

I must say wow. Beautifully decorated with chandeliers and white tablecloths. Owner is very friendly and has a fantastic sense of humor. The food is excellent. Portions are huge. Very flavorful I must say. Will be going back often.

Pork schnitzel 28 cm or 11" diameter!

Father's day dinner 2022, it was two of us. I had pork schnitzel 28 cm or 11" in diameter! Never see schnitzel so big in my life and I'm from Europe! It was good with mushed potatoes and cucumber salad. Salad did not have dill as advertised. My wife ordered fried cheese and mushed potatoes and cucumber salad. The taste of cheese was not as we expected. I expected brick cheese inside and it was smoked cheese or at least I think it was smoked cheese. Didn't taste right. Portions were really large, we managed to eat only about half and had dinner next day at home. The service was slower, but restaurant was almost full for Father's Day, no biggie. We had non alcoholic beer, good one. Too bad they don't have liquor license, European beers would be nice. Overall not bad, will visit again.

Schnitzel and spaetzle (egg noodles) with caramelized onions

Visited Ottawa and traveled quite a ways to get to this little family-owned shop. My German friend said the schnitzel was as authentic as it gets! The portions were huge and I definitely did not leave hungry. I personally found the spaetzle (egg noodle) with caramelized onion even more delicious actually. There is very limited bench seating here, so I think it's meant for take-out or a very casual meal with a friend or two. There is no real seating. The owners cook the food themselves and you can see them preparing it.

    Schnitzel, spaetzel, and saurekraut.

It's an old school family run businesses, and if I'm being extra honest, small town family run are some of my favorite businesses around, but they can also be the beneficiaries of being busy because there's less choice and they're not very good. Not the case here. You're likely to get served by the friendliest server north of the border, Marie. She was the ONLY server in a busy restaurant, I believe this was by design, as she doesn't skip a beat. Super friendly and helpful, and not the least bit bothered by the fact she's got a full house all to herself and many others in her place would be flustered. Any questions we have, she was ready to answer in a helpful manner. She gets six stars in a five star town. Awesome. I ordered the schnitzel and my god, MY GOD, it's freaking delicious!! Total home run, zero complaints about this amazing dish. Those overly crisped spots that you often get on a schnitzel because it's a bit thin and thus tricky to cook? Not here. Perfect breading. Portion the size of a license plate. Comes with what looks like bread, but is actually a flour dumpling cut like bread. It's topped with home gravy which is tasty without being too salty, often the case with gravy. Veg side has a nice sweetness to it and the tartar sauce is a awesome mix of herbs and garlic. The dish I got didn't include sauerkraut, but I sampled from my moms plate and it's also a home run. Amazing consistency and taste. I don't know if they make this in house, but I'd guess they do and if they don't, they've chosen well. The chefs here have gotten their levels down to a tee, and it's amazing. Last, but definitely not least, the prices. For two people, schnitzel and sausage dinner (comes with two sausages, rice, and a generous side of sauerkraut) it was $40. How they do this I don't know, but this is a business run out of love, not for pure profit. It's an amazing deal, and amazing food and service to make it the trifecta! If you're in the Smiths Falls area, go here. Worth the trip!

My husband and I came here for a takeout lunch. I got the Chicken Kabob Platter ($8.95) and he got the Clay Oven Chicken platter ($16.50). My platter came with 2 chicken kabobs, rice, salad and what they call "Roasted Trois Vegetables" which was beets, potatoes and sweet potatoes, and a can of pop. My husband's platter came with 2 chicken legs with thighs attached, and also rice, salad, Roasted Trois Vegetables, and a can of pop. My kabobs had a potent curry flavour to them, which I loved. Although there was chicken in it, there were other fillers as well, which I couldn't make out. It was still good, and for the price, a great value, how can I complain? Lol. It was nicely seasoned and not too salty. The rice had beans in it and tasted like the rice you would put it burritos, so a definite Tex-Mex flavour. I really liked it, as it was soft and fluffy. The Roasted Trois Vegetables were unusual, but not unpleasant, lol. The potatoes were a bit mushy compared to the beets, but still ok. I don't even know what flavour profile they were, lol. The salad was simple with just romaine lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes, but all ingredients were fresh. I liked the dressing which was citrusy and not too abundant. My most common complaint with salads is that they are overdressed, but not here. The amount of dressing was fine. My meal had Indian, Mexican, and general European influences. It's like a global party ;) I had a taste of my husband's clay oven chicken and it was delicious! I might have to order this for myself in the future. It tasted a bit like Tandoori Chicken, but the seasoning was a bit different. It was spicy and I loved it. The man serving us was also the chef. Admittedly, I heard the microwave go off a few times while we were waiting for our food (probably to heat up the roasted vegetables). It's kind of a fast food joint, and business is a bit slow right now due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, so I understand. This restaurant has a bit of everything and it's a bit of a mish mash, but that's part of the charm. It feels very genuine, and is not pretentious at all, and I have always had a soft spot for sincerity. I will be back to try the tacos, and get some more of that clay oven chicken! Of note: my husband originally wanted the Scotch Egg Platter, but we were told that they didn't have it. I don't know if it was just for that day, or its been removed from the menu. I guess I should have asked. Anyway, it's a bit of an unusual place, but I liked it. There are some tables for dine-in. Street parking only.

The Long Version: I have this thing I like to do while on staycation, and my husband indulges me. I like to go on food crawls of eateries that are only open on weekdays, which I can't usually go to because of work. Valentina is one such place. And it was included in our recent staycation food crawl, lol. My husband and I shared a panini combo, which comes with your choice of panini, soup or salad and a canned drink or bottle of water. The price listed on the menu board was $13.25 but I was somehow overcharged by $1.62. Not sure if prices increased or it was a mistake. But even at $14.87 I felt it was a reasonable price for these days. I chose the Valentina panini which consisted of ham, turkey, bacon and cheese. They ran out of soup, so I was offered either a garden salad or steamed vegetables. I opted for the steamed vegetables and received a generous amount. I got a bottle of water. It was Kirkland (Costco) brand. The panini was a good size and perfect for sharing. There was a generous amount of cheese that produced a decent cheese pull. The bread was hot and crispy. We both enjoyed the sandwich. The vegetables were mostly carrots but also contained green beans, bell peppers and cabbage. They were a bit too soft and mushy for my tastes and a bit too greasy/oily, but were still good. Service was courteous. Even though they are in the food court, they have their own seating area. So you can opt to sit there or in the larger general food court dining area. I can see how this place is popular with those working in the building or nearby buildings. They serve European classics like meatballs and cabbage rolls. This is what everyone else was ordering. Portions are generous from what I saw. If you work in or near the C.D. Howe Building, or are weird like me and love looking for small independently-owned eateries only open on weekdays during regular "office" hours and make a day out of visiting a bunch of such businesses, I think this is a great lunch option ;) Street parking or paid parkade only. The bread is a crusty kaiser and always tastes fresh. They usually have some bread in a basket behind the counter to make the sandwiches, but when they are out, they ask you to get a bun from the place where they sell the buns which is on a wire shelf that does not look very sanitary. However, the lady puts on gloves when she makes your sandwich and removes the gloves when handling the cash. Big points for this. If they kept their bulk buns in a more hygienic place they would get even bigger points from me. They sell lots of candy and cookies from Poland and they also have lots of Polish desserts. Also deli meats. Great place to grab a tasty sandwich in the Byward Market if you don't feel like standing in line at La Bottega.
