This is the single nicest campground that I've had the pleasure of visiting in the last three years, since I started camping regularly again. While the previous occupiers of our site hadn't bothered to clean up after themselves, we got it done quickly, and it was no big deal. Always, always, ALWAYS leave your camp site cleaner than when you arrived is our immutable, unbreakable rule. Bethany and Gregory, the owners, are absolutely wonderful hosts; incredibly friendly, hardworking, and welcoming. The site itself was absolutely gorgeous. We chose a primitive site, as we roll heavy with a full solar power array and bring our own water. We were tucked far enough back to give a fair bit of privacy, but were also lucky enough to be near the porta potties, which, trust me, at 4:00 AM, is a very nice perk to have. Dune Lake Campground is a very nice, quiet, family oriented campground just north of St Joseph/Benton Harbor area. The campsites are well situated and clean with level areas for a tent or RV. Many sites are provided with both electrical and water access. The camp has a dump station on site and also has staff who will dump your tanks at your site for a modest fee (so you do not have to unhook and move, then rehookup back at your site during an extended stay). The bath house is an older facility but is kept clean and in excellent condition. Showers are free and hot. The on-site lake is small and very nice for both kids and adults. Access to Lake Michigan is available just minutes away at a public access beach. Across the street is a Nature Conservancy area with several trails. We decided to take advantage of the option to book a site for the whole season (May through September) for our RV. It has been a wonderful decision. We can pack a small bag and be in the RV enjoying the sights and sounds of nature in less than an hour without towing or setting up anything. We really enjoy this area and this campground. read more

Upon arrival, we were immediately yelled at by the owner Doug for a confusing check-in process. Instead of explaining that a car tag was needed he followed us to the camp site and very rudely demanded us to leave the site, even though prior to arrival we called and explained to them that half of our group would be coming later. There was no email of explanations about campground rules, camp site number or campground facilities. We had to call for all information. It was very clear from the beginning that they prefer families to stay at their site not multiple adults. While walking to the bathroom at 10:55 we were yelled at for disobeying quiet hours (they start at 11). We were also threatened to have the cops called on us as we sat with a group of 8 people by our campfire, a "party that needed to be broken up." This happened 10 minutes prior to quiet hours. Overall the campsite itself was not bad. The "lake" was more of a pond and couldn't fit more that 25 people at a time but ultimately fairly clean. The restrooms were clean and we enjoyed our neighbors. Do not pay the extra $20 for electricity because each box is shared with 5 or 6 campgrounds. I definitely would not come back to this site again as it was not worth the $30 for the weekend. Especially now that they limit the number of adults per campsite to 2 people. We ended up leaving the campground early as we started to feel unwelcome by the owners. read more

I can't even begin to describe the experience we had a Dune Lake Campground. First off, it's a nice little park, it has lots to do for kids, and would be perfect for a family get away weekend, but going there with friends is a huge NO! We went there to meet up with friends we hadn't seen in a year, and apparently this place is not for having fun. The first night we got there, we were listening to music by the fire and having a good time, when out of no where the owners come up and sternly told us to turn our music off, it was after quite time! (11:10) We weren't paying attention to the time, so we apologized, and immediately turned off the music, and said we didn't know quite time was at 11. The lady owner then made a smart comment like we were stupid for not knowing. (I guess I should have read the two pages of rules they gave us at check in before I did ANYTHING else) Then the second night of our trip, we made sure to turn off the music at quite time, and our group had thinned out so there was only a few of us left, we were just sitting by the fire, relaxing and having a few laughs. By 12:15 we had all decided to go to bed and my husband and I were cleaning up our site to go in, and that was when they showed up again, SCREAMING this time! Flipping out for being up past midnight, how dare we still be out at our fire enjoying the nights that we PAID FOR! We apologized, and told them that we were just trying to clean up our chairs before we went into bed. The woman just kept yelling! I then yelled back because I was done being polite at this time, since she could clearly see that we were the only ones there, and we were trying to clean up! My husband then said to the man owner, "are you just going to stand there and make sure we go to bed?" To which the owner replied (yelled) "listen asshole, this is my f*cking campground, and I will do what I want!" They told us we had to get into our camper or we would have to leave. I told them I have never been treated so badly by the owners of any establishment I have ever been to, and that they had been nothing but rude to us the entire weekend! At this time I was done picking up my site, and I grabbed my husbands arm and told the owners we would never come back again! We made sure to get up at first light and we're out of there as soon as we could! Never once did they ever come and politely ask us to quiet down, it was done with force both times. Also there are signs all over the campground that if you break one of their two pages of rules, you will be asked to leave immediately without a refund. I just have no words for how we were treated! Even our neighbors (who we just met there this weekend) told us that their actions were completely uncalled for, because they were right next to us and had no issues. I truly am deeply upset, and just want to put this weekend in my distant memories. read more

This rating was going to be higher initially, but things soured when we were leaving. Family owned campground, just off of Blue Star Highway, north of St. Joseph. Price was a little high but understandable for a private campground. Ice was $2, wood was $10/$20 - $10 bought you about 2 cords of wood, which they delivered it on a golfcart. Nice. We were at the far end of the campground, so the noise was minimal. They allow dogs too, mine was barking at the screeching frogs at nightfall! Loud. Plenty of wood was found by foraging thru the surrounding woods. it was early in the year, so hadn't been picked over. The sites were minimal, not really marked off. We had 2 adjoining sites. We actually moved over 1 site since one was really muddy. Fire pits were tiny, an old truck tire rim. Camp was not crowded at all either. The swimming lake, if you would call it that, was disgusting. No fishing. They should allow fishing, since you wouldn't want to swim in the festering lagoon anyway. Campground is right upon the Michigan sand dunes, which makes for nice hiking. They also are right next to a nature preserve which has trails. Bring your bug spray. Upon our exit, we were instructed by the front office to return to the site. We asked why, and they replied, there's an issue with the trees. We returned to the site, confused as to what the problem was. We cleaned the site thoroughly; no garbage, fire was out etc. Turns out, we left wood on the site. We had stacked up some extra logs we found and cut, kindling and such too, and left it there for the next campers. I was shocked and asked why, and was told that some people like a clean site when they get there. They started saying they should charge for site cleanups. I muttered -"I would be pleased to find burnable wood left at my campsite when I arrived, but if you want me to, I'll drag the 4 logs 20 feet into the underbrush to make you happy. We drove away befuddled. Reading other Yelpers, we took care not to speed, not to be loud etc. Guess they like to keep you guessing at the grounds. Probably won't be back. read more

In one short sentence: "We are not going back." This may be a family owned and operated campground, but state parks do a much better management job any day. First, the owners were not very friendly. They have a 7 day cancellation policy that they failed to mention when we called, nor is it posted on the website. So when we had to cancel one night and one of the two sites all together, they gave us the run around on the phone. Then, when we got there, they tried to force us to keep the 2nd site (mind you we were paying for an RV site for just 2 tents, because no more tent sites had been available the first time we called), telling us it was 4 people per site, though everywhere we looked it is really 6 per site. We had to be really forceful about getting our way, but we did. However, I hate doing that. I was yelled at (by a fellow camper and one of the owners) for driving to fast. Later that day, the same owner yelled at my husband for going the wrong way on a one way path, though there are no signs that say "Do Not Enter". Also the bathrooms were not cleaned all weekend, even with ladies garbage cans piling up in the stalls and poo on the floor in the men's room. The "lake" is one I would never let a toe touch or any stray dog enter. And the campsites are far too close together, with no privacy. So yeah, I had a good time, thanks to the friends I was with and the wineries we could easily visit. But to no thanks to the campground or it's owners. Next time, it's the state park or the KOA for us! read more

My Wife, 2 little girls and I LOVE Dune Lake: We like Dune Lake so much that we became seasonal campers, spending every weekend in the summer. And we've now been there for 10 years. Dune Lake is a private campground with a woodsy state-park feel to it. (not like some K.O.A.'s where folks are camped right on top of each other.) The spring-fed swimming lake is wonderful. And there are lots of activities and special events including Christmas in July,Ho down, Luau weekend, and The not-to-be missed haunted Forest in October. Doug and Deb are wonderful hosts. There is a lot to do in the area, everything from Blueberry picking and wineries to nature trails, petting zoos and shopping. South Haven is only 15 minutes away. Doug, Deb, Lynette and Dennis bend over backwards to make sure everyone enjoys their stay. And the regulars are a fun and welcoming bunch. The kids love the playgrounds , game room, beach, and especially the Hay Rides! As spring approaches each year, we can't wait to get back up to our special place. If you're not familiar with Southwest Michigan there is truly something for everyone there. And if you prefer a woodsy setting where every site is different, come check out Dune Lake. I do have to take issue with the poster that complained about being told repeatedly to slow down. One of the wonderful things about Dune Lake is that it is so kid friendly. And often our little-ones and others ride their bikes & scooters around the campground. For this reason, a Kid Zone signs and 5 MPH signs are posted. And yes, from time-to-time when someone goes speeding through the campground, they are asked to slow down. If the person was speeding to the point where a fellow camper yelled at them, then frankly, they were probably driving a bit too fast. People are enjoying nature and relaxing. Why such a rush? The same poster complained about the cleanliness. The facilities are cleaned several times a day. And as to the comment that the lake isn't fit for swimming. It's pristine and usually warm as a bathtub. He also complained about not allowing fishing. It's a swimming pond. not a smart place for fish-hooks on the beach. But there is plenty of good fishing and boating in the area for those who enjoy the sport, both on Lake Michigan at nearby lakes. read more

Only 2 hours from downtown Chicago, makes for a great low-key weekend getaway. Don't forget the time change! Family owned & operated - they are always friendly and accomodating. $25 a night for the primitive sites. The sites are closeby each other, but it's great for groups. The ground is more sandy than muddy which is nice, I don't feel as dirty. Women's bathroom is clean, there is always plenty of hot water. Pretty good location to nearby wineries, and there are 3 canoing/kayaking places anywhere from 20-60 minutes away. read more

This is a family owned and operated campground. The owners were really great at making us feel right at home. It was a lot smaller than I thought based on the website and their lake made for swimming was green and disgusting. Campsites are pretty close to one another and are great for groups. Bathrooms as well as the showers were always clean. They also had a playground and basketball court that were good for the kids. 5 stars for service 3 stars for location 1 star for the scenery Which gave my overall stay a neutral 3 stars. read more

Very disappointed in our choice to attend Dune Lake Campgrounds. Upon arriving we were not greeted with a hello but a have you paid for a site? As we explained we were just arriving, the male owner told us if we do not verify our reservations immediately we need to leave. That night we realized this was a concentration camp and not a place for adults to enjoy their weekend. At 11pm we were told we needed to be at our camp site. At 12 they came back through and told us we needed to head to our camper or leave because it was past park curfew. Do yourself a favor and find another location for your vacation. $35 a night yet no fun to be had. read more

Ahhhh...Dune Lake Campground, a great place to enjoy the relaxing sound of a chainsaw at the crack of dawn. The luxurious activity of tree chopping done by the owner at 9 in the morning before I was even awake. Also, done in the evening time while trying to settle in and relax by the bonfire. Highly recommended if you like to be babysat by the owners that drive around checking on you every few hours, not to mention the nightly rounds made by Covert police. Dune Lake....supposedly a lake on site but really a green algae growing pond. No need to worry about your white noise machine at night, you got the constant flowing freeway traffic to keep you asleep. If you like to camp in a no fun zone then this is place to go! Needless to say I felt watched and scrutinized by my every move. I will not return. read more

This is a great place for families. There are hayrides, crafts, campground wide dinners and facilities that are clean. My kids enjoyed the playgrounds and the nearby beaches. I would stay here again. There were a few campers that were not happy with it but they were up screaming songs at 1 am and had to be told to be quiet - they got upset.. but honestly. I liked that the local police came by to make sure things were good, the owners were nice. It is a great family campground. My kids want to go back:) read more

absolutely a terrible experience from the moment we got here we found this place on the internet and the pictures are extremely misleading! first off there is no lake it should be called Dune Pond campground and the water is nasty and DYED blue with chemicals or dye (hopefully safe for people as they expect people to swim in it) it's smaller than a pond and there's nasty guck and mosquito larvae in it. They started harassing us from the second we pulled in because we were a young couple apparently. They were so rude to us from go and even kept coming around every hour to "check" on us. They told us we can't have our SERVICE dog off leash even if she was following me from my tent to my table (she doesn't leave 2 feet from my side as she's trained) so we complied with the rule and decided to go check out the "lake" we walked up and peeked in and was there literally 2 minutes before they rolled up and literally screamed at us that no dogs were allowed near the water... we said okay we didn't know we'll walk back across the street to our camp and he kept yelling at us as we were walking away that he's going to kick us out (we've been here barely 3 hours at this point) and that we need to read the rule book (we didn't get one) and kept it going as we were trying to leave. Its been an awful time and we feel like we can't even leave our campsite or do anything as they are being so crazy. Its an extremely tiny little campground with tiny sites as well one little one way circle of campsites and most if them are seasonals apparently and everyone knows eachother super creepy campground do not recommend ruined our night and we will not be coming nor will we stay another night packing up bright and early and getting the heck out of this dump. Like to edit they just came around at 9 pm still daylight and said if they hear a peep out of us past 11pm they are calling the authorities... This is so insane I've never experienced such crazy and mean people we have done nothing wrong nor have we been been loud or rude to them back. read more

Stayed there for a couple of night at the end of May 2015. Very clean, especially the bath houses. Nice pond to walk to surrounded by sand dunes to explore. I would of rated this campground 4 stars due the the fact that the roads were not paved, but because the owners/hosts were so friendly and accessible, I had to rate it 5 stars. DO NOT STAY HERE! I have camped at private camp grounds before. This is the worst place I have stayed. I rented a cabin for two nights and left after the first night because it was so bad. First the "lake" is a pond that smells gross. The dunes are the piles of sand from digging the pond. The cabin is made of particle board and very simple. I was aware it was "barebones" but it was just cheap. The guests and owners were not friendly at all. We felt very uncomfortable. I had visitors and they stayed past "visiting hours" by 30 minutes, I didn't even know what time it was and, myself and my guests were treated aggressively. We had two cars and the owner tried to say we needed a car tag. I had already signed us both in. We could not leave fast enough in the morning. Waste of our time and money. read more

We enjoyed this rustic campground. There are lots of huge trees. It's a bit tricky to get parked. However, the owner was very helpful with suggestions on how to get into our site. He even let us drive the wrong way on a road to avoid having to unhook our car in a rainstorm. There are several long term residents, but all sites were clean as was all the campground. This campground only has water and electric and no cable. However, the satellite worked surprising well with all those trees. The owners were friendly and helpful. Was a last minute trip for Labor Day weekend and amazing timing gave us someone's canceled reservation. It's quaint and close enough to the lake. The lot size is good enough and not too closely packed. Shower and bathroom shared facility as most campgrounds have had for years. read more

I have been coming to Dune Lake Campground for about 6 years now and since it has been under new ownership, things are just 'okay'. They make you pay in advance with a cc over the phone. They do not have any online reservations. They dont allow outside firewood in - we spent $30 on wood over 2 days. The portalets were out of toilet paper the ENTIRE weekend. On a happy note, the couple is super nice who run it and the facilities are nice and the atmosphere there is really fun. I will go back there for sure, and continue to bring friends with since it is so laid back and really close to South Haven but far enough way to be in the woods to be 'camping'. read more

Nice quiet clean but owners not much help if you need assistance with something. Their website says you cannot bring in fire wood but definitely bring in kindling and some other means to get the firewood started and to maintain the fire... Kindling of some sort is a must!! Unless you have a hatchet to make your own kindling out of their wood, you need a fire starter of some sort read more

We camped Memorial day 2015 and enjoyed it. Check in was easy. We stayed for 4 days. The campground was quiet and the owners enforced quiet time which was from 11pm-7:30am. The restrooms were ok for a campground, I think maybe if they upgraded the bathroom/shower area it would be better. 80 something campsites and two showers it was little hard to get a shower in. The bathrooms were cleaned often too. The pond was small, the kids swam in it. The pond served it's purpose. We were right across from the playground which my kids loved. The campground had dunes you could walk on it was pretty cool. Over all the campground was very clean and welcoming. While we visited they had a bbq potluck and everyone had to bring a dish and they provided the main dish. It was nice and food was yummy. We are planning on coming back in a few months for the peach and blueberry fest I'm South Haven. read more

My family loves it here, and we come as often as we can. Its nice to get away from the TVs, phones and video games. The amazing thing is my kids don't mind it. They actually forget about it and have fun with something known as nature. The owners are warm and welcoming. It is so safe, we don't worry about the kids going off on their own. An okay campground for families with kids. Close to a couple Lake Michigan beaches. I think most people wouldn't venture into the pond in the campground. There was a loaf of unsliced moldy bread floating around in it. It was also a strange color. The chainsaw, which was operated by the owner, was an annoying sound to hear throughout the day. The owners seemed to be everywhere... a bit annoying. Also, there's only one store in the area and one pizza place. Everything else seemed to be closed down... And it's an 18 minute drive to civilization, downtown St. Joseph. read more

I have not stayed at this campground yet but will this weekend. Here is my story. My family and I were coming home from a camping trip in Gladwin, Mi on July 4, 2011. I was pulling my Pop-up camper and my truck decided to blow huge amount of white smoke from tail pipie. I was able to get off the freeway and than she quit. To make a long story short. Joe the owners son came and towed my camper back to the campground. How nice is that. The owners were extremely nice and let me keep camper there until I can get back this weekend to pick up. My wife and I brought our 4 grandkids to Dune lake, the kids keep asking to come back, the.owners are friendly, the campground is shady. A kid on an ATV pulling a wagon of firewood comes through several times a day, the kids love the swimming pond and mini golf. You can give the kids a little cash to play a game of mini golf and get an ice cream and not have to worry about them, it feels really safe here. read more

I have such mixed emotions about this campground that I had to join Yelp and give a review. The owners are a family and do work hard at their campground. But I can't in good graces give them more than 2 stars especially after reading another review that really stretched the truth. First of all the facilities although old and dated, were very clean and we saw the owners cleaning them a lot. But there is no game room as one lady wrote and I highly doubt the " lake " is spring fed. Upon our arrival we went to the lake and it was literally green. One worker told us they treated it with chemicals?! We did not let the 5 children in our group swim on it. We went to the very nice beaches on Lake Michigan that were about a ten minute drive from the campground. The weekend we were there was Christmas in July. Santa was present at events. The kids had a bike parade and hay rides. There are very cool sand dunes to climb behind the lake and a nice nature preserve across the street to bike in. The campground has lots of very mature trees and the ground is mostly dirt and moss covered. The two cabins for rent were very nice.. We didn't notice on the website about the no dog rule and my brother had a 4 month old puppy that we had to keep in our trailer until one night of storms and enough crying that we called him to come get the pup. My brother had a crate for the puppy and put it in the cabin just until 6:30 in the morning then he kept the dog outside. The owners were furious with us and went as far as to call me a bad parent for not following rules and teaching our children rules aren't to be followed :(. They tried charging us $100 dollars for cleaning. In the end my brother payed an extra $50 to them but it was frustrating. I hope in the future they will tell customers or at least send a confirmation email about their rules. We were 4 hours from home not like we could just drive the pup home. read more

We camped here over Labor Day for the first and for sure the last time! To start we get there and there are no golf carts allowed. I told the owners that a year ago I suffered a massive heart attack but it would not sway them. They told me they only allowed a few permanent campers that where handicapped to have carts because they had problems with 13 year olds loading up carts and " flying" around campgrounds. Then we where playing bags one night about 11:10 and they blasted to our site and made us stop as it was quiet time we had to stop!! Not loud not whooping it up just throwing bags. Now had they treated carts the same way not allow anyone without a drivers license drive them that would have worked . Them it was Monday time to go they don't have sewer only a dump station on way out. The thing was over flowing !! Wonder what the EPA rules are in that? read more

This camp is great! My family has stayed there 1-2 times per year for about 5 years. The camp owners go out of their way to make sure their guests have a pleasurable experience. We stayed there a few times during the pig roast/potluck over 4th of July weekend. I have never stayed at a campground where the owners would go out of their way to do such a thing for their guests. The camp has good shade cover and is cool even during hot summer days. There is sandy beach along the small in-land lake. There are also at least three play areas for children, swings, a beach volleyball court, and a basketball court. If you hike to the back of the camp, there are sand dunes to walk around in and enjoy. Camping at Dune Lake has in our experience always been a peaceful and quiet experience to relax and enjoy! The owners don't put up with loud or obnoxious people after quiet hours and that is MUCH APPRECIATED for those of us with small children. Finally, the other main reason that we like to stay at Dune Lake is the restroom and shower facilities. We are "tent campers" and must rely on using the camp provided facilities. The showers have individual stalls for privacy. The bathrooms are cleaned throughout the day. In all our experiences, we have never ran into a problem staying at Dune Lake. You can beat the place for the price of staying at Dune Lake. read more

This campground was just ok. I would not stay here again. Cons: Not very well kept up - the grounds were weedy, and untidy. The putt-putt course was overrun with weeds and looked terrible. The playgrounds were not very nice. The small lake was a nasty green color and very mucky. There's no way we would let our kids even stick their feet in it! The women's bathroom was small. There were only two showers (although we did not have to wait). They could have been cleaner. The men's bathroom was very dirty. Pros: The staff was friendly to us and gave us some hints about where to drive to Lake Michigan. They had a Christmas in July hay ride complete with popsicles for the kids and candy canes. Santa was on the hayride. This was very nice and the kids loved it! You cannot bring wood in but for $10 they will deliver some right to your site. The campground is only minutes from Lake Michigan. There are very pretty sand dunes that you can walk to within the campground. read more
