Horses dogs and…read morebirds The Charles Washburn Park is a peaceful and scenic place tucked away down a small street in a quiet part of the town of Marion. It's a site of numerous equestrian events and has several horse riding areas that can be used anytime. Besides the equines the park also has an area for dogs. It's not fenced in but the folks can bring their canines in the area behind one of the horse rings to run and play with the other canines. The park also has some beautiful wooded areas and cranberry bogs and makes a nice place for a gentle hike. It's very flat and it's actually more suited for walking than actually hiking but the area is lovely, especially in the winter or fall. Lots of birds make this their home and bird watching groups gathering here during the year to catch a glimpse of their favorite feathered friend. Washburn is a different type of park that seems to cater to critters more than to humans, even though it does have baseball and soccer fields for the bipeds to use. A pleasant and peaceful place to visit if you happen to have a dog, horse or just want to see some birds or nature.

A brand new state…read morepark Sweets Knolls is a brand new state park that is still in the development stages. It is open to the public but to get into the park it looks like you are driving into someones driveway and then walking into their backyard. Not a lot of parking right now but it doesn't matter since know one seems to even know this is a park. It does have a large sign but there still is a lot of work to be done here. The park right now is pretty much just open fields with some trails down by the Taunton River. Some great fishing in the river and there also are places to launch a canoe or kayak. Lots of great old pine and oak trees are on the property as well as a little pond. The area was heavily occupied by the Natives American tribes and lots of artifacts have been found nearby so I suspect lots of historic treasures will be found down by the river by people with a keen eye. The property also has several miles of old rail line that will probably be turned into a walking and biking trail. The land is pretty flat so it's not a very challenging hike but I imagine this will become more of a casual place where families will come to walk, fish, look for birds or have a picnic. Sweet Knoll is indeed open to the public but it still needs some work to fulfill it's final purpose. It's great that the state purchased this land because the area is beautiful and allows access to the river. Right now it feels like you are walking around someones backyard but I suspect in the future that will change.

Like other reviewers said it does look like you're going into someone's private driveway but its…read morenot. We went and after we checked out the pond we went on a trail that was going in the direction of somerset. I think most other reviewers went the opposite direction. I didn't see any markers but the trails were easy to follow. Although I would be weary of people crossing the train bridge, especially children as it did feel a little unsafe. Overall I thought this was a pretty fun place to explore.

Brewster Gardens is a Free Park with metered parking across the street…read more It is located just down the street from the Mayflower II Ship & is a short walk from Plymouth Rock & Plymouth Memorial Park. It is directly across from Cole's Hill. This tranquil peaceful park was created during the early 1920's. The area encompasses the original garden plot granted to Elder William Brewster in 1620. The Pilgrims settled here because of the abundance of fresh water & the many springs. Another reason why they settled here was there's also thatch that grew along the water's edges that provided necessary roofing materials for houses. There are bronze statues & sculptures here honoring Plymouth's immigrant settlers. The bridge with the water flowing beneath it from the Town Brook is a beautiful little area to just sit, chill & relax. There are benches, green grass, trees & flowers & is very picturesque. This is a great place to have a picnic. While we were there a wedding party was taking all kinds of pictures in this lush green landscape. A great scenic place to have your lunch or just to meander. It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really rich to have The Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've Been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like A King On A Limited Budget!

As far as beach goes, it's a dump. As others said - its rocky. So I followed the advice of Yelper Michele T and headed left for sand. Yes - I found sand. But a narrow 6' strip of sand. Covered in washed up seaweed. But if you try to go in the water, it is all rocky. It was pretty gross. Yes, the water is warm. But no waves. Not even tiny waves. They have bigger waves on Lake Michigan. And you have to wade through seaweed to get into the water. And walk in rocks in the water. I didn't make it past my knees and felt desperate for a shower After a 20 minute walk down the beach we actually found an area with about 30 feet of sand, no seaweed, and sand when you actually walked in the water. But it was a tiny area near an estuary. Really not worth the walk. The only positive I could come up with - there were hardly any people there. So if I was willing to make the 20 minute walk to the nicer sandy area, it is probably one of the few beaches in New England where I could topless sun bathe without risking arrest. This is really a beach to walk on. Since the view out across buzzards bay and the Elizabethan islands is beautiful. But it is not a beach for sun and surf. Maybe when I'm a senior citizen, in my velour track suit and orthopedic shoes and trifocals - maybe my husband and I will come take a walk, holding hands, early enough in the day so we don't miss the early bird special at the nearest restaurant a 1/2 hour drive away.

Ocean views and…read morerocks Beautiful park but not a great place to swim unless you happen to like rocks. This park doesn't have sand, it has zillions of rocks, of all different sizes. I like rocks so I had fun looking at them but I did get kinda sick of stepping on the damn things when walking. Definitely wear foot protection when swimming here. The best part of the park are the views. Absolutely gorgeous! You can easily see Cuttyhunk and other Elizabeth Islands and even Martha's Vineyard in the distance. Great place to go in the off season when you don't have to pay the 7 bucks for parking.

When it is open, you can go in and check out some fliers and talk to some real nice people, but the main point is the trails and activities they sponsor. They have a great amount of trails to walk along, heading into the woods, close by farms, and right along the beach, so you get a bit of everything from these walks. They are pretty well maintained, but you should still use some bug spray to prevent ticks and mosquitos, as well as boots for there may be some mud puddles. Take your camera and binoculars for some great nature scenes and animals. They also have many guided walks and family events, as butterfly walks or planting a a garden. Get out there and enjoy nature!

A park with a big…read morerock Dighton Rock State Park is named for the famous 40 ton rock that is now located at the park. The huge glacial rock was originally found in the Tauton River but moved to a small museum in the park a while back. The rock has strange petroglyphs on it whose meaning and even origin is very controversial. The rock was known and discussed as far back as the early 17th century and most scholars now believe they were carved by Natives Americans for unknown and forgotten reasons. Of course various other theories like Phoenicians, Vikings, Chinese, Portuguese and the ubiquitous aliens also are tossed around. Like an intelligent species is going to travel bezillions of light years to write on a rock. Beside the famous and enigmatic rock the park has about 100 acres of roads, trails and a pleasant picnic area by the river. Not enough room for any serious hiking but a nice place for dog walking or a stroll through the woods. Unfortunately the museum is only open by appointment so the rock is usually hidden away. However the rest of the park is a nice place for a picnic or to relax. We will probably never know what the glyphs on the rock mean but even without the big and curious rock the park is a pleasant place to explore.
