For the past 3 Summers my family has spent a vacation week in Little Compton, Rhode Island. A great place which time seems to have forgotten. This year we decided to go a bit further from Connecticut, up to West Island, Massachusetts. Prior to our renting a home for the 3rd week in August, we did a bit of research and thought that having the state reservation on the island close, as well as several others would be a great opportunity to shoot some bird photos, fish, hike, and enjoy unspoiled beaches.
We were definitely a bit mistaken. These reservations are more or less land set asides which lack any sort of trails or trail management. Several were not accessible without navigating past no trespassing signs. Don't bother asking the locals for guidance either, because if you are not a local land owner, they don't really want to bother with you. Several beach / cove areas which on maps appeared to be public were posted private property in person.
This vacation was unlike any trip, anywhere in New England I have ever been on.
The beach on West Island is nice but absolutely nothing special. Facilities are nonexistent and unlike other reviewers who found the beach uncrowded, we found that the parking lot was filled to capacity Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of this 3rd week in August.
The general store on the island is handy but far from complete. It is more or less a small room sized storefront with essentials but zero charm.
If you are looking for a place to grab a coffee, ice cream, snack, or buy local seafood, you need to go vacation somewhere else, as the island lacks any sort of travelers amenities.
One last thing if you do go...parking at the beach is pricey. Parking at Hoppy's Landing is $7 if you want to launch a kayak, sit at a picnic table, or enjoy the view. read more
