The treatments he prescribed caused me to develop new chronic illnesses. While failing to treat and resolve a patient's illness may be common in the medical community, and can be excusable, his attitude changed over time as I failed to improve. He showed signs of disbelief and began to dismiss my symptoms. I think he got in over his head by trying to treat my symptoms himself and couldn't accept his failure. The office was not helpful with helping my husband understand which lab he was to go to for a specialized analysis and was given the run around for two months. He couldn't go to our regular lab provider and was directed to a specialized lab, they gave him the wrong information several times. We had to spend several hours calling the insurance providers and several organizations in the local area to figure it out ourselves. It was horrible. I then scheduled a visit to establish care for myself. I have several medical conditions and Dr. P refused/dismissed many of my concerns/requests citing her personal feelings about my care (mind you she had never seen me before). I then asked for specific labs (that my previous physician orders to check my nutrient levels); she was against it and didn't see the benefit to it. Although she came across nice, she took a very authoritative approach to my care. She was very dismissive of my complaints and prior experience and need for specific testing. Her denials either came with no alternative solutions, just a "no, I do think that will help" or "this is what I'm willing to do for you" as if she was doing me a favor instead. I have never received such pushback and unwillingness to provide care without "good reason." It was just very disheartening to experience especially since I struggle with ongoing health issues.

On top of that, I had a rash for 3-4 months that my old doctor brushed off as "normal." That's when I decided to switch to Dr. Coyne -- and I'm so glad I did. During my very first visit, Dr. Coyne took a close look and told me I had a non-sexual yeast infection on my skin. He gave me a cream -- and boom -- it cleared up. I was amazed. That gave me the confidence to ask about my scalp again, even though I had lost hope. Dr. Coyne didn't dismiss it. He took just 30 seconds to examine me and said, "This looks like folliculitis." He explained it clearly, gave me a treatment plan, and said, "Let's try this cream -- if it doesn't work in a month, we'll do something else." To my shock -- it cleared up in FOUR DAYS. I kept waiting for it to come back... but it's been over a month, and my scalp is finally clear for the first time in 20 years. It felt like they saw my mom as part of a family. This felt more gatekeeperish, which is, of course, part of the job. I Was considering an office that was more connected to gerontology before my mom was assigned to this practice. It this point in her life, I want her remaining years to have sunny vibes for future health visits. Sometimes that family feel in the front office is just as important as outstanding physician care down the hall.
