Used to be, but no longer is, one of my favorite Hutchinson restaurants. The service is as good as ever, but the food quality has substantially wained. Used to be that one could get fresh shredded potatoes for breakfast hash brown. Now they are anyone's guess. The precious Moon Burger has seen better days. Smaller Burger smaller bun. The sacred French fries are now thinner and the portions smaller. Do not try the Chicken and noodles they are terrible. read more

I t's 5 stars, for what it is. Opening in 1949. It's 50' type diner. Old style look, but clean and nicely maintained. I included menu pictures, but it's typically diner food. We feel the food is great. I love the all day breakfast, especially the all meat omelette. Their Moon Burger is also great. Frankly we've never had a bad experience here. The entire staff is friendly and you can sit at the "bar" and actually watch your meal being cooked!! When in Hutchinson, it's a must try... but be warned, no matter the time, they are typically busy!!! read more

I'm in town for a few days and wasn't sure where to go. Thanks to the trusty Google and Yelp, I found Skaets which appears to have opened in 1949. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was very good. The tenderloin had a nice flavor and the fries were also well cooked, though not too well done. Stopped here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon while in town for the basketball tournament. This is what I would consider a "greasy spoon" with a home style type of feel, and the usual crowd. We opted to sit at the counter which was right by the grill like a diner and ordered a couple of beverages. I asked what everyone orders and got a smile and told to get the moon burger. I obliged and went with fries. The moon burger is a standard thick burger with bacon and cheese, toppings on the side and a nice helping of fries. Main issue here was how long it took to get our food. Keep in mind, I can see the cook and the tickets he was working on and rather than do the burgers together and look at all tickets he took the tables one at a time. Took forever to get the food which I had to whoop down and barely got a chance to taste let alone savor. Fries were fresh and the burger had a nice flame char to it. Overall- it wasn't anything incredible but I got a coffee mug and we headed back to the bus. Somehow this place didn't offer milkshakes. Had an EXTREMELY disappointing experience here. Having worked here when I was a kid, I looked forward to finally getting to be a customer. However, we waited close to 40 minutes for our orders. Meanwhile, a table of customers we watched walk in, were served before us. ALL of the food was cold. (We saw it sitting on the waitress station for nearly 5 minutes before it came to our table.) Was in yesterday and it was busy which is normal. Waitress said there will be a delay due to volume. Not a problem, well, until we've been there for a little over an hour and start seeing everyone else get there food but us. People who sat next to us and got there 45 minutes after us got their food. We were done,... Left a 20.00 spot for tea and water and food we never got! Waitress was non existent and then at the end tells me as we are walking out oh it's coming... You know if she would have came over and said, I'm so sorry I forgot to put your order in or hey the ticket got lost I would have been fine, heck already been there over an hour. This is my second time trying this place. I am writing the review as I wait for my omelet. The last meal was good. This is a nice locally owned greasy spoon type place. They are nice. The service is fast and friendly. They have adapted to the post covid life. Paper disposable menus and spacious dining and such. I am sure that I will become a regular here as I just moved to town. the worst service in Hutchinson. Good food, if you ever get to order or then ever recieve it! If you don't mind waiting well over an hour, more common 2 hours you'll get some good food, maybe! This unfortunately has become the normal. You'll watch others come in after you, order, eat and you will still be setting waiting to order. I've spoken to many friends and family who used to go there and will never go back due to this type of treatment becoming their normal. Excellent place for breakfast, lunch and supper. On the most recent visit we at breakfast. Had the Special Omelet, best omelet I've had for sometime. Learned a lot on how it was made by sitting at the bar where you can watch them prepare your food. The omelet's are made with real eggs, not egg mix, they whip it up right there at the griddle. Hash browns and toast also came with the meal. They have a great selection of jams such as peach and blackberry. (Just one of the small things that can help with an impression of a place.) Service was prompt. If you go at peak times, you will have to wait for a seat as the place is small. But it is worth the wait. Came here today for some breakfast, after reading the reviews thought I would give it a try. You can tell it is a favorite of locals as the wait staff knew a lot of the people coming in to the diner. The kitchen is open to all which I like because you can see your food being made. The portions are huge and I couldn't finish my whole meal. Everyone was very friendly and they kept coming to fill my coffee and make sure it was still hot. The food was good no complains, I had the ham and eggs which came with hash browns and toast. I opted for the English muffin and tried the cinnamon toast. Which it is just white toast butter sugar and cinnamon. Not bad I think if I am ever in town again I will come back. This is what iconic places are all about! The history about the place makes it a must stop if you are ever in Hutchinson. The smash burgers were amazing and the fries were pretty good. The menu is quite large - so if you are in the mood for a salad - you're in luck. One thing to note is the are very environmental friendly- the straws they use are paper! It's a small place, but worth the wait if you get there and no tables are open. Turnover is pretty steady, so hang tight. read more

We walking in the door on 05/24/2015 to a packed dining area, we expected it to be as the parking lot was packed. There were a few folks waiting for a table and we spotted two seats at the counter. After checking with those in front of us to see if they wanted the seats, no did so we settled in and ordered coffee and water. From where we were seated we could see the grill and prep area (we were 4 feet from it) and entertained ourselves by watching. The grill was surprisingly small for that size of restaurant, it looked to be about 3 feet wide by 2 1/2 feet deep. The two ladies working the grill and prep station were amazing, it was literally a culinary ballet as the two of them moved around the small area, and the lady on the grill (I think her name was Cheryl) was masterful in her organization and speed. Everything had a place and was put on and pulled off with precision. We were so engrossed that we forgot to eat at times, watching these two was so interesting and amazing. The food was beyond good, great or fantastic. It's good enough that I would road trip from Tulsa just to have breakfast there! Served piping hot right off the grill and everything cooked to perfection. The eggs melted in my mouth and the hash browns were just the way I like them! This is a wonderful old-school joint with really good burgers, sandwiches, salads and pies. You have to try the Moonburger, a space-aged creation to celebrate the moon launch in the 1960s. Skaets is Steaks done dyslexically (backwards), for those who might wonder about the odd spelling. It's something of a landmark in Hutchinson, I was told by those who recommended it. The meat at the Carriage House out in Yoder was a bit better, but the steaks and burgers are pretty good. The service is great. The prices are more than reasonable. We stopped in here late afternoon. Surprisingly we had never been before in all the years we have gone to the fair. So much better than any fair food, hands down! The servers were perfect, got us what we needed in a timely manner, but didn't harass us. I ordered hot tea as it was a cold rainy day; and they knew how to serve it! (Amazing, what I've been given some places!). My husband had a hamburger steak with a salad, roll, and fries. It all looked scrumptious. He said it was delicious and ate every bite I had chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. Wow! It was all good, but I esp enjoyed the green beans. Took my wife, daughter and grandson here for dinner on a Saturday evening. Maybe 6 ppl in the whole place...that should've been my first clue. The place is unimpressive from an appearance standpoint. Drab, boring, and an almost dirty feeling. The food we ordered was average, and just barely that. 2 Moonburgers, and regular cheeseburger, and some pancakes (grandson). The burgers were pretty small, which was surprising given all the rave reviews on here about how big they are...LOL. Overall, it was a barely average experience. One that I won't be repeating. Not a great spot if you want to talk to the people you're dining with. Interesting spot if you want to see where they keep parcooked bacon or the HUGE chunks of butter. Old school diner. Kind of like going back in time. In a cool way. Worth going just for the anachronism it is to most modern restaurants. Staff is super friendly.
