I needed to rent certain DJ equipment for a DJ for an event. I attempted to call an audio rental place closer to me, but he never answered his phone. After many attempts, I then decided to call this place. They had everything that I needed. When I walked into the store there was someone able to help me right away. The equipment that I needed was being rented out to google the night before. An older gentleman stated that if Google did not bring it back on Friday, I would be screwed. He then said it's OK because he would pick one up from San Leandro if he had to. That was cool to hear that. This is my new go to now!!! Also there is parking in the back. My brother needed lights for gigs, so I saw this place on yelp and came through. Had a lot of stuff, but messy. We walked in and no one acknowledged us the whole time we were in the store. We see what we are eyeing and ask a guy if he can help us. He says hold on for 10 minutes.... 10 minutes in this store with nothing to really look at? My brother looks up lighting at guitar center and we headout after some time. The guy does't make an effort to stop us or anything, nor does he get another sales associate to help us. I just purchased an Odyssey rolling case from Dynamic Sound and they were recommended by the manufacturer. Not only did Oscar the owner give me a great price because Odyssey recommended them, but they also helped me setup the case, install the wheels, and get it ready to tour. The guys at Dynamic Sound and Lighting are great. They would be the opposite of Guitar Center - they know their gear, they're sociable and extremely friendly, they have great customer service, and they will go out of their way to accomodate your needs as a customer. I was there for the first time this last week because I needed to get my tonearm clip, rca's, and on/off switches fixed. Even though it was only my first time in the store (and my first time meeting the workers), the guys there make you feel like you're an old friend stopping by to kick it. Chopped it up with them after discussing my repair quote and then we got down to talking about lighting. They went out of their way to set up 5-6 different lights for me to see, as well as turning off the store lights, cranking up the music, and turning on the fog so I could see which lights work best in the environment that us djs work in. Great customer service! If you're a dj it's a great spot to kick it and chill with people who actually know what they're talking about. Edit: They accidentally returned to me somebody else's turntable, and not my own. Needless to say the confusion was not appreciated. The guys there are still cool and they did blame their new service technician, but I didn't like that I had to make extra trips (and wait longer) to get my turntable back. OK, not quite a 5, not bad enough to be a 3 but close. Dynamic Sound & Lighting(DSL) is the largest most well stocked DJ gear and lighting shop in San Jose. Oscar is the owner of DSL. It's a family owned shop, his brother, cousins, entire family all work there. They stay well stocked on many different types of bulbs. Whenever a disco light bulb burns out (like last week, our 1000w spotlight bulb burned out) I can always count on them having what I need in stock. Bottom line, if you're a club in the San Jose area, and you have a bulb burn out at the last minute, this is the place to go. To better assist the DJ community, they have late hours. So let's say you get in on Friday around 7, you see a bulb burned out on a fixture, they're just a mile or two down second street. You can go there, get back, and have a replacement bulb within 30 minutes. The other nice thing about them too is Oscars family has a metal working business. So if you need custom welded aluminum trusts, they can do it for you. Finally, they have pretty good return and bartering policies. I got a bad bulb once that was obviously bad when I got it. They looked at it and just gave me a replacement on the spot. They've also let me barter on stuff via consignment (discount on new equipment by trading in old) OK now the bad. I hate doing this because I really like these guys, but these are the reasons they're not quite 5 star. This review could change if these issues get addressed. We have some LED pars we got from them. Several of them are burning out. We were promised some replacement boards (the mfg sent replacements to DSL) but we never received them. They got lost or something. Also my time is pretty rushed when I do stop in because it's an hour before showtime. I've had to wait 5-10 minutes at the register while some of the other family members chat it up with someone not ready to purchase. I understand the importance of chatting up some of your regulars, heck, I do it too but if I'm standing there with my credit card out or a wad of cash, that's a hint, lets ring me up and get me out of there. Other than those two things, I like the shop. Good people, really convenient. Our entire club is lit by them. Oh yah, I forgot to mention, besides lighting they carry lots of mics, speakers, mixers, cables, and vinyl. --toq **UPDATE** I'm gonna give Oscar the extra star. He just gave me a killer deal on an antari hz-300 hazer unit, so all is forgiven. read more

OK, so this place lost a couple stars for a couple reasons: When I called to confirm my rental pick-up, the dude Oscar went to check and had me on hold for 5 minutes... and when I called him back he was clearly inattentive because when I said, "I will be there around 2, or 3..." he paused and said, "Ok, you'll be here at 1?" What the...?! Anyhoo.. the 3 stars are definitely well deserved because they are very knowledgeable on equipment, the sales workers were pretty friendly, and the rental process was VERY smooth and easy. Great place for renting DJ Equipment! I needed Speakers for a Pismo beach trip and they hooked me up with some Mackie's and all the accessories for 5 days but they only charged me 1 1/2 days!! This is where I go to get my party equipment if I'm trying to make my function epic. Light rentals range from 20-30 bucks, but u r probably going to need a fog machine (which is kinda expensive for a rental I have to admit-$35) bc it does accentuate the light show. However, when u r partying n dancing u kind of forget to use the fog machine, but if u r doing an electro party, I def. rec it. I would come back to this shop just to get some ambient lighting for get-togethers. You can budget somewhere from 60-200 dollars for a decent lightshow party. They also lease dj equipment n speakers. Yo.....this place......IS FREAKIN' INSANE! I mean I'm all about the customer service when it comes to businesses and they have excellent customer service. I went here 2 days in a row, and was greeted my the same person, Patrick, who is a really nice laid back fellow. I went there on Wednesday right before they were about to close and Patrick didn't mind helping me out and more. Im hosting a party today and I was looking for some killer lights to rent without breaking the budget. I checked out this place because of the yelp reviews on here, and these reviews are not fake. The service and the prices are unbeatable! Anyways, Patrick had an extensive knowledge of all the lights in the store. He booted up some EDM on their sound system there and turn on some of the lights in the store. And did I mention they have this HUGE black curtain that they close to block off all sunlight to show their demo's of their lights. Its pretty freakin awesome. Anyways, we immediately found what we wanted when we turned on the first two lights, then he explained to us their functions and all. He even covered the place with the fog machine, giving us a full "rave" experience. lol. Then for the fun of it, he turned on every light they had in the store and it was like a night club in there! Went back the next day to show some of my boys, and they absolutely loved the presentation also. Patrick explained the same stuff he explained to me the previous day and they were also amazed by his knowledge of the items and just really helpful personality. We will be going back today to rent the lights, and might I say, THEY ARE DIRT CHEAP. I mean the products they have are worth around hundreds of dollars and up, and they are renting it out for like 1 percent of the price. It is really mind blowing but just awesome at the same time. I was unable to get any sort of formal price quote... just vague quick answers once in awhile as if my business wasn't important. I came in looking for DJ equipment to rent for my Graduation party and they were able to help me with everything I need all at an amazing price! I bought two Gemini cd players from Dynamic sounds and when I took them home and played with them one of them was defective. I went back to Dynamic sounds and they tested the unit out and was defective. They loaned me one at no charge to get me through my upcoming events while the new replacement will arrive. When I was playing at the event the cd player they loaned me started to get disc errors and that put me in a bad spot. I called Oscar the owner but I got his voicemail and left a voicemail letting him know I have an emergency and that the cd player that was loaned to me was having problems. At the time the owner was in San Francisco doing an event so he was not in town. Two minutes later I get a call back from one of Oscars employees from Dynamic sounds letting me know he received an emergency call from me and what the situation was. He asked me then where I was playing at so he can bring me another cd player. He got there no later than 15 minutes and hooked up another cd player that worked perfectly. Let me ask you DJ's out there, would your supplier do the same for you? This guy takes care of his customers and he has always been there for me when I need anything for my business. They even price matches and there store is full of all types of nice and the latest products for DJ's and Clubs. There employees are all knowledgeable. Whenever I don't understand how to work the unit they take the time to educate me and show me how to operate my equipment. These guys are just ok to me. Two stars? Pros- you can get a good deal sometimes on rental equipment. Cons- the NEVER have anything in stock. Who cares about the price when you have to wait weeks before they get it in stock. - I ordered a 62 rane last year and it took 3 weeks for them to call me - rude on the telephone- seems like they are in a rush to get off- maybe they are understaffed. If so, they should hire more people over all, i am all for supporting local businesses, but there are better alternatives then dynamic sound. read more

I really want to say that this company is wonderful. Oscar, who works especially with lights, was extremely helpful. I am a high school music teacher, and wanted some special effects lighting for my end-of-the-year pops concert. It's always a big deal at my school & I wanted this year's to be really special. I didn't have tons of money or know-how, but Oscar helped me find just the right combination of truss, special lights, etc., at a reasonable rental price that I could afford. He came out to my school and gave us advice on how to set it up, and seemed to genuinely care about what we were doing. This place is great, I have gone here to rent mackie 12" 10" speakers stands, microphones, and lighting for hotel parties.. I also bought my Serato from here had a turntable repaired and bought many needles off em... These guys are very knowledgeable and have worked with many nightclubs here in san jose.
