If you want to pay a lot more for fancy, try somewhere else.

This is an adorable, somewhat small shop-classroom-studio. There are lots of indy label sewing patterns (like Christine Hayes, Colette, etc), sewing notions, a smattering of scrapbooking items and some lovely locally-handmade pieces. The Makehouse offers fun classes. They offer basic sewing, pattern making, upholstering and specific piece workshops. There's a Kids Club a couple nights a week. They also have drop in sewing times and "sewcials". It seems local fiber artists use the space as a studio...it's an inspiring environment. They were featuring some unique hand embroidered portraits of women by an artist named Annie Nazarian when I stopped by. Unique, interesting. There's a definite Somerset Studio, slightly vintage vibe coursing through The Makehouse that is charming...if staying downtown, it's worth the extra block's jaunt to visit or if local, a few hours to stop for a class. I try to spend a couple weeks at a time every few years in Victoria - and on my next extended stay I intend to take some classes...I can't wait for my next visit!

They weren't and I saw two sales people answer the phone long after I had come in. Eventually, their newest sales person came to help me. She knew nothing and when she, twice, asked for help from the more experienced staff, they answered her and then abandoned her, despite it being obvious she was struggling. After 30 minutes I still didn't have a quote for a standard shower set as she still couldn't figure out the pricing, the parts etc. I asked her to email me the quote when she got it figured out and left. It's been a week and I'm still waiting for her email.

They carry a wide range of small paintings, mostly quite lovely landscapes in oil, acrylic or encaustic. Also an impressive selection of wood sculptures, ceramics, and glass. I was especially impressed with the many wooden bird carvings by Hermann Edler (one of which I bought!) and the ceramic "jug birds" by Gillian McMillan. Lots of jewelry too. Oh, don't skip by the card section without a good look--there are some dazzling hand crafted cards by several artists. This is a place where you can purchase lovely pieces without feeling like you're going to break the bank...plus you can walk into Eclectic and never feel like the staff are silently judging you on the likelihood that you can afford or even appreciate the works. The woman who owns Eclectic seems to genuinely care about the artists she carries and about the joy of looking at their achievements.

I have been heavily into health and nutrition for over 30 years, teaching martial arts for almost 30years, and am now over 50. I was really impressed with Josh's knowledge of health, nutrition, supplements and the human body. He was very honest with me about what I needed and didn't need, explaining carefully his reasons. He listened carefully to what I had to say, and what my needs and goals were. I was impressed that he encouraged me NOT to buy anything that first visit, instead sending me home with free samples. I came back the next day to discuss my needs further, and how the samples went. He sent me home with more free samples. A day later, I went back for my 3rd visit and was able to confidently purchase an array of products that would help me with my health goals. The store is geared more towards body building and that's not my focus but I still found a lot of goodies. They have a few vegan protein powders too. I liked the brand IronVegan the best. As far as I'm aware this brand isn't sold in the states. The employees were really nice and knowledgeable. They let us try a few different types of protein powders. I thought that was great customer service. They said they didn't want us buying something and end up not liking it.
