I live nearby and I'm always surprised that it can remain busy in here. It is known for its steaks and I believe it is related to the business down in the loop, Gene & Georgetti's. They both make great homemade potato chips. I've attended dinner events here in the past, but not recently and I believe it's their pricing. Last night I dined with my husband and the few times I've enjoyed their house salads. They make homemade dressings and the blue cheese was really good. My husband enjoyed his ranch and said it was homemade as well. The price of his skirt steak was $62 and it was cooked to his liking but I didn't know it was grilled with a Worcestershire sauce and I hate that taste. If we had known I would have asked for it plain because just a like salt is perfect. Now go down the block to Jameson's chop house and the steak is less than $30. Both restaurants offer the soup or salad and a side of starch so how can they charge $62. We both didn't have big appetites so I ordered the spaghetti with Chilean sea bass and it was okay. I am sure the regular Chilean sea bass dinner would have been better but double the price and I couldn't eat that much so didn't make it worth the cost. Dessert was shared and the banana crème pie was delicious and baked in house fresh. You could taste the freshness of the bananas, crust, and crème. Great coffee and fantastic and attentive service. So why the 3 star rating? Only the rich can afford to continually come here and when you look in the parking lot I saw mainly high end Mercedes and convertibles. We walked. Lol! read more

The best food ever. The chicken parm is the best. And the valet is the best, like the valet named Andy and another guy named Kamil. You should go there on a wednesday because they are not that busy. The waiters are so so nice including the bartenders and the owner. I suggest to also try the chicken noodle soup on Sundays. We typically don't like to go out for Steak since my hubs makes a killer one at home but this steak was incredible and melted like butter in my mouth. Cute, Cozy Italian restaurant in Skokie near Old Orchard Shopping Mall. The restaurant is comfy and well decorated for the holiday season. There were several enticing options on the menu, my girlfriend opted for the salmon as I ordered the seafood pasta. The seafood pasta was very good. The portion was large and there were plenty of chunks of fish, calamari, shrimp, etc. My girlfriend was very happy with the salmon. Our server, Johnny, recommended a glass of Cabernet that didn't disappoint. Overall, the experience did not disappoint and I look forward to returning. read more

When I got it, it definitely was bottled ranch dressing. He said maybe they ran out. When the salmon came, it was over cooked. We waited to get another salmon cooked properly. It was good. The creamed spinach was not very good. It's actually much better at Boston Market. I asked for a special desert for my cousin, who is 101 years old. The food is reliable but simple it's basically an expensive diner. Don't look for craftsmanship like sauce making they have ketchup in A1 sauce on tap. Skip the wine it's not coughable although the cocktails are monster size just like the food portions. I went there with my wife and my mom for her 88th birthday. This was our first time going to EJ's Place and we had a reservation for 6:45 p.m. not sure why we sat down to our table at 7:30 after the host told us just a couple minutes but we thought that was very rude that we waited 45 minutes for a 6:45 reservation. The server told us he worked there for 30 years and he was making recommendations for us and we took a couple of them and they turned out to be horrible recommendations because this guy seems to not know much about the service industry and how to treat people if he had been in the business for 30 years. Our food took forever to get to our table, and then when the food came they brought us our salad appetizer and the entree all at the same time , that sure sounds like a veteran of 30 years that knows how to time food nicely ? We had made a special request when I made the reservations that we wanted to have a booth and that it was my mom's 88th birthday and that we would like to have a dessert with a candle come after dinner. That was ignored completely and the waiter seem to be dumbfounded when we were aggravated when all the food came at the same time. This was a nice find. The place has a decidedly country vibe upon entering through what looks like a barn door. The inside is warm, rustic and fairly elegant. The service is friendly and attentive. The menu offers a nice verity of options for all tastes. For starters we shared the shrimp cocktail and grilled calamari. The shrimp were plump and juicy. The calamari was flavorful and fresh. The salad course was a basic dinner salad but fresh nonetheless. For my meal I had the sea bass with sautéed onions and peas and garlic mash potatoes. All three were yummy. The fish was light and has a nice flavor. The sides were tasty but could have used a tad more seasoning, though enjoyable and for some probably perfect. For dessert I went with the tiramisu. It was good. Not to rich just nice and enjoyable. Over all I liked this place and will be back. read more

Really shocked by the poor reviews! My husband and I dined here this past weekend and absolutely loved it! The prices were in line with the large portion sizes and superior service. We started with a half order of the grilled calamari. It was the BEST grilled calamari we have ever had and the half portion was still too big for 2 people. We then had the chicken Parmesan with the vodka sauce (enough for three total meals), pork chops (2 10oz chops) and ended with the homemade key lime pie. Wow just wow. This place was phenomenal. The first time I came here was on New Year's Eve with another couple. We had Christian as our waiter, he provided excellent service even though they were so busy. He was very personable and had great recommendations I had the fish entrée that was a special for the evening and it was out of this world. I had finished it before even realizing there was a butter sauce that came with it that's how succulent it was. We also had the lobster tail as an appetizer which was meaty and cooked perfectly. I'm rating them based solely on service and atmosphere. Amazing amazing service and so warm and comforting to eat there. We did order a large steak that I think was cut before it was ready as all the blood drained out and it was a bit dry, otherwise everything else I can't complain about. While I had a creole red beans and rice with a side of collards and green beans, another had the baked chicken with mashed potatoes and chicken gravy, and collard greens, and another tried the plant based crab cakes with collard greens and yams. If that sounds a little too healthy, the menu also has ample Southern fare including a fried fish sandwich, fried chicken, beef tips and gravy, Mac and cheese, fried pickles...you name it. Came here to celebrate my anniversary with my husband. We have lived in the area for years and never came, but always saw it packed on a Fri and Sat night, so we made our reservations early. When we arrived we did have to wait about 15 min to be seated, it was that crowded. I was anticipating something amazing. Unfortunately, we were not really impressed. The bread that was brought out was cold, like it was refrigerated, but whatever. Wasn't really planning on eating it. We ordered shrimp de jonghe and the grilled calamari. Both of the appetizers were spot on. I never had calamari grilled before and it was surprisingly tender and tasty. The shrimp bisque was not special. There were barely any pieces of seafood in it. I ordered the spaghetti arrabiata with the chilean sea bass and the waiter mixed up my order to just the chilean sea bass which was about $20 more than what I had ordered. He apologized for the mix up and asked if I would like a side of pasta. I said sure thinking it would not be charged because of the mistake and sure enough it was when we got the check. That was disappointing. The chilean sea bass was a large piece, it was cooked well, and had a nice crispness to it. However, it was not what I wanted really. I just felt bad sending food back. Also, I've had alot of pasta in my life and was not impressed by their pasta sauce. Especially a little side dish that was $12. My husband did enjoy his chopped steak at least and the cottage fries that came with it. Our waiter decided to throw in a slice of tiramisu for dessert. It was excellent. One of the best I have ever had. I think that for how expensive this dinner was, I had higher expectations. Our waiter was a pleasant guy, but I think the situation should have been handled better. Wow, who knew?? I've been driving past this place for over a decade with no idea what was inside: the classic steak house format set inside a Northwoods lodge. After the initial shock of being two levels under-dressed and thirty years underage, I enjoyed the meal. Everything was Old School. We got a bread basket with white, multigrain, breadsticks, and raisin bread. The house salad was 95% iceberg lettuce, and the dressing on the side came in a bowl the size of my palm. When three of us ordered garlic mashed potatoes, they brought a large bowl for the table. Other reviewers have mentioned sticker shock, and it's true that the prices seem high for the quality--but not for the quantity. I ordered the pork chops (noting the plural quizzically) and what they delivered were two inch-thick chops each the size of my hand. Good lord! One filled me up handily while the other came home with me. A couple of nitpicks: 1. Mandatory valet parking. Actually, this isn't a nitpick--I detest this policy. They get very busy on a Saturday night and want to pack the cars like sardines into their tiny parking lot. But they should just pony up to expand the parking lot. Or else charter a few shuttle buses to make a circuit through Skokie, Glenview, and Wilmette. It would probably tickle the shit out of the regulars to leave their Buicks in their garages for the night. 2. The busser who cleared our plates mumblingly asked "Coffee? Dessert?" as he leaned over the table. Only half of our group heard him, and up to then we had dealt only with our main waiter, so we were confused whether we were being offered the full range of end-of-meal options and whether this would be our only opportunity to order something else. As it turns out, we did order coffee from him and then our regular waiter came by with dessert menus. But it was awkward and annoying. If you want to offer us something, stand still, address the entire table, and communicate clearly instead of treating the entire thing like an afterthought. Better still, let the waiter handle it. Minor service snafus notwithstanding, we had an enjoyable evening. Now that I know what to expect (dress up a little and fast for 24 hours beforehand), I would be happy to return. They don't make 'em like E.J.'s anymore. read more
