We started with a refreshing French 75 and a Blackened Lemonade (non-alcoholic). Really enjoyed both drinks. For our main entree, we ordered the Ribeye and the Prime Skirt. Both dishes were delicious. For dessert, we ordered the Creme Brulee. Overall the ambiance gets 5 stars. The food was good overall. Our waitress, Mila V, was very polite and attentive. If it's your first time visiting, call to get directions because the entrance is not on Church Street. Service was excellent. House salad, described as small, was very filling. And delicious. Rib eye was tender and juicy although still waiting for the full 16 ounce steak--ours was about 10 oz. I suggest you skip the creamed spinach. Crème brûlée was light and tasty but had a strange texture. Overall a good dinner but seriously over-priced main dishes. Once you step inside of this hidden gem, you're seeing 20 foot ceilings, an enormous, beautiful chandelier with raw natural brick all around. The wine selection on the wall is extensive as well as the whiskey offerings. With that being said, I must recommend The Smoking Cap - rye or bourbon, cardamom, clove, fig, black walnut bitters and the Famously Naked - mezcal, Aperol and lemon I didn't personally have the steak offerings, but when I saw them coming out, they looked so good and there were so many people ordering them. However, the route that I went had to be equally as good because everything I had from the lobster rolls, to the caviar sandwich to the lobster, spaghetti and miso, salmon or simply delightful. So what am I missing here with this sub par rating for a great restaurant? Is it tricky to find the 1st visit? Yes. Are some menu items overpriced? Yes. However, the ambiance, service and overall quality of food makes this restaurant as least 4.5 stars. We have been here a few times with the most recent time a few days before New Years, the 27th of December to be exact. I wanted something hearty and warm so I started with their French Onion Soup. It was a good call here especially if you add some additional pieces of bread. For their main course, I did their Dry Aged Rib Eye (med rare) and it did not disappoint. Every bite was delicious and wonderful! I added some Blue Cheese but in retrospect, I did not need this so bad call on my part. I will say I did not care for their Black Manhattan. I didn't know what I was thinking as I knew what I was getting myself into but still ordered it. It was too sweet for my tastes. Their is metered parking but make sure you pay your meter! Being a Chicagoan usually means that you enjoy a good steakhouse. But then that also usually limits your steakhouse experience to those found downtown Chicago. Imagine my delightful surprise to find a top shelf steakhouse just blocks from my home in Evanston... I celebrated my birthday at The Barn and was blown away from the moment I stepped in the door. From the lighting to the decor to the vibe: it can all be described using one word - SEXY. The vaulted ceiling and open spaces certainly give rise to a barn-like atmosphere, but the focus returns immediately to the harvest once you are seated. I don't drink alcohol so our server Ben suggested a Blackened Lemonade made with active charcoal and maple syrup - REMARKABLE (who comes up with these ideas?!). Ben offered us so many recommendations of his personal favorites that we opted to try as many as we could before it was impossible to squeeze through the exit. This meant that I had to save room for tasting from everyone's plate, so I ordered the Surf & Turf 8oz. Filet Mignon with the Giant Grilled Tiger Prawn. Clearly, the grill chef here is an artist because our plates looked almost too pretty to eat. Any admitted "Foodie" knows that we first eat with our eyes, and we were awed by the presentation. My Filet was seared to perfection. So tender that I could almost cut it with my spoon. The pan-seared Salmon and the Crabcake appetizer were among the favorites. Their practical preparation highlighted the rich flavors. My spirits and mood were lifted again with a slice of Arnie's Chocolate Velvet Cake. My chocolate addictions were properly addressed and we fought for the last crumb. I have been back to The Barn four times since my birthday and have ordered carry outs an additional two more times. I've recommended The Barn to several of my clients, all of whom were similarly impressed. The Barn easily competes with or overshadows most of the traditional Chicago steakhouses with its innovative menu and classic charm. Their waitstaff is extremely professional and attentive, setting the bar for service staff across the entire area. I'm having trouble finding a flaw in The Barn. If there is one, it is their subdued entrance at the rear of their building. They do not comp dessert, but will give a little taste of champagne and come out with a sparkler. Apple Maps definitely doesn't have the right location of the restaurant. It was a little difficult to find. But the interior of the restaurant is beautiful. Lightly muted lighting inside with beautifully detailed chandeliers and tableware. Our bill for food ended up being over $300 with tip. Appetizers were good but not the best. The cheese plate was a fun appetizer because you could make lots of different combinations of flavors with the fruit, nuts and honeycomb. The barn salad was refreshing with the mint but really lacked in toppings. The dry aged steak is one of the best steaks I've ever had. Very masterfully cooked and the meat quality was superb. It is incredibly expensive though. The Mac and cheese and Brussel sprout sides were fine but didn't wow me. The carrot cake was delicious and had lots of different textures with the fried carrots shavings as a topping. They order everything up front so they can pace your meal, which I appreciated. What made me drop stars was the service we received. Service was not to the quality we would have expected at a restaurant like this, especially with the price point of the food. The attitude felt cold and efficient but not personable at all throughout the dinner. Wee came for dinner after hearing so many good things about this place. We got seated right away. Staff were very nice. They have extensive bar and win selections. We settled on French 75 which was wonderful. We ordered the crab cake to start and i ordered the dry aged bone in ribeye and my wife had the calves liver and the Robuchon potatoes. We were served the crab cake within 5 minutes which was quick and surprised us. The crab cake is quite generous. Unfortunately it tasted old. the flavor was off and it didn't taste like fresh crab. The apologized and didn't charge of for it. The entrees arrived together. I ordered horseradish on the top. I bit into my first bite and the steak was over salted. I like lots of salt but this was way too much. The server and the maitre d offered to replace it, which I should have done. Instead because I was taught not to throw food away, held onto it trying to muddle through the meat and finally decided the salt overpowered the beef flavor so topped eating it. The claves liver was good and the option size huge, They comped us desserts for the bad steak , nevertheless after getting hoe I realized I should have gotten a new steak, because my memory of the food is tainted. read more

Catching up on Yelp reviews in 2024. Last time, I visited was in February 2024 with my parents and it's one of my parent's favorite spots. Ambiance is quiet, dimly lit, and a super cool place. We didn't really care being seated by the entrance, but it ended up being pretty quiet as tables are kind of on top of each other. Me and my Dad split the oysters, which were ok. They were flavorful, but super small and didn't have much brine to them. I ordered the 8oz filet mignon and potatoes. The steak was very tender and juicy. The red wine sauce had amazing flavor. The steaks are really good and slightly cheaper than downtown Chicago; but they are still not cheap. Quality is very good and worth the price. It's just not a top 3 steak in Chicago as there are better ones downtown. Again they are still very good. Potatoes were very good! I've had Old Fashioned and I had an Espresso Martini last time I was there and I think their cocktails are very good! Service was fine. Our server, Cody, was extremely hard to hear as he was very soft spoken, but he was friendly and offered good service. Birthday party for 10 adults. The waitress said this restaurant was famous for its steaks, so about seven of us ordered steak. Six chose the NY Strip, while I opted for their flagship aged ribeye. Unfortunately, all the steaks were extremely tough and very difficult to cut. My ribeye was particularly bad--it took a long time to cut through the fat and gristle just to reach the meat, and even then, it took minutes to slice off a piece. When I finally tried it, it was so tough I couldn't chew it. Since we were guests, we didn't send the steaks back, but I couldn't eat mine at all (photo attached). Later, at home, I tried cutting the ribeye into small pieces with my chef's knife, but it was still inedible. This was the toughest steak I can ever remember having. With tax and tip, the steak in the photo cost about $85, and I ended up throwing it away. The waitress was very nice and attentive, but the food service was chaotic. When the servers brought out our meals, they got almost everything wrong. Those who ordered salads with anchovies received them without, and vice versa. The salads were unremarkable in any case. The servers also kept delivering main courses to the wrong people, while the waitress tried to teach them how the table numbering system worked. Drinks took nearly 20 minutes to arrive. I didn't see the final bill, but with tax and an automatic 22% tip, it must have been close to $1,000. Our hostess said on the way out of the restaurant that the only course she enjoyed was desert. This was one of the worst meals I can recall, and I eat out several times a week. read more

Was excited to dine here with all the buzz and walked out a bit disappointed. It's got modern decor and is downright cozy-- people are on top of each other and it's an obstacle course to the WCs. The menu is steakhouse standard with a nice drink list. Our server was friendly enough to start and then disappeared for 15-20min, didn't check in after entrees, and we had to flag him down for the check. The food was below average for the prices and hype-- 1 salad choice and it was just ok. The tomahawk was ordered medium and came out still mooing. We were told that I comes with potatoes so didn't order a side of them. The portion was meager. Mind you, this was an $88 item. Overall, we had a pleasant time. The food was good, though not particularly impressive. We ordered three types of steaks--the center-cut Manhattan, dry-aged bone-in ribeye, and 14oz New York strip. Small quaint steakhouse inside a rustic "barnish" setting. Very nice ambiance. Delicious food. Great desserts. The dry aged ribeye was outstanding, cooked to perfection (rare for me). Dry aged NY strip with tarragon horseradish topper was also very good. All steaks come with a potato, which is nice for a steakhouse of this caliber, as most serve their steaks a la carte. The chocolate cake and creme brulee were also delicious. The creme brulee was very vanilla forward, where you could see the ground up vanilla beans in the custard, making in very tasty. Made a reservation on Opentable for our anniversary, and checked the anniversary box under special occasions. The waitress finished our meal with a glass of wine each on the house for the occasion, so its a nice touch they acknowledged the anniversary made on Opentable as I feel many restaurants glance over that box. On May 3, we took over the entire restaurant for a 90th birthday celebration for a special Northwestern alumni. It was a truly special evening, and everything from start to finish exceeded our expectations. The Barn staff went above and beyond to make the night seamless and memorable. The manager, Nick, was calm, collected, and impressively attentive to every detail--his presence helped set the tone for such a smooth and enjoyable experience. The Barn event coordinator, Danielle was also fantastic--responsive, helpful, and a real pleasure to work with throughout the planning process. We also really appreciated one of the owners stopping by during setup to say hello and welcome us--it was such a thoughtful gesture and added a personal touch to the evening. The dinners and wines were absolutely wonderful, the service was exemplary, and the cake and birthday song were a perfect and memorable highlight. After reading multiple reviews both on yelp and Google I definitely expected more in terms of the vibe, service, menu and especially for a first timer. I tend to be a diner who asked a few questions not only for accommodations or options but also to understand what exactly their take on any particular menu item happens to be. Considering the competition within a 1 mile radius of downtown Evanston I think they were doing a fair job however this would not become my very first choice for dining. I believe during Covid they may have an outdoor space as well however I did visit here pre-Covid and this is a long overdue review. Parking in this area is quite challenging and also please keep in mind the actual street address of this restaurant location is quite misleading versus where it truly is located. For three people our bill before tip averaged $90. Don't forget to add the tip. The Barn resides in Evanston,Illinois in an over 100 year old building. It has a history which can read while you wait to order. We had two 16 oz. Ribeye steaks, a side of mushrooms, crab spaghetti entree for the wife and two French onion soups. Two cocktails were ordered as I decided to only have water. I thought the French onion soup was good but not the best I have had. My ribeye was prepared correctly and enjoyed but again not the best I have had. It came with potatoes. The service was fine and the restaurant was enjoyable to view. There is a parking lot just outside that's from the city so you pay at the nearby machine. This was a Sunday 5pm dinner so it wasn't crowded. The food was good but the prices are high. Steak prices are high with every restaurant I've been to recently. We enjoyed our dinners there. The liquor I thought was expensive but I haven't eaten in Evanston in years. Saw this place on Instagram and wanted to give it a shot, as I wanted to I take my girlfriend here for our one year anniversary. As a big fan of NY strip steaks, I was very excited to try out one of the hottest steak restaurants in the suburbs. Once we got there, we immediately loved the rustic and fresh atmosphere of the restaurant. First, the cheese tray was tremendous. Super diverse selections of snacks for an appetizer (the brie was fire!). Once our steaks came they were perfectly cooked. I got the NY and my girlfriend got the filet, and they were phenomenal. Lastly, we ended the night with some of the most rich and delicious cheesecake we've both ever had in our lives. Seriously a great treat. Also Our server Nicholas was great! Top notch service with a great anniversary suprise :) While the Barn is a little on the pricier side, it will not leave you disappointed and is worth every dime. Perfect for the special occasion. My most recent visit in May was absolutely spectacular -- great drinks, amazing food, and attentive service all in a beautiful space. My favorites are the crab cakes (they jam pack them full of crab meat, but they are not crispy if that's how you prefer crab cakes), brussels sprouts (to die for), mac n cheese, and the best steak on the menu is the filet. All steaks come with smashed potatoes -- they're not the creamy, buttery mash you can order but they have some texture to them (I personally love them). My husband and I have been enjoying patio dining for the past month during Covid-19. It's been fun to get out and about as safely as possible, but have to admit I've left most dinners wondering if takeout/delivery would have been the safer option. However, last night we dined at The Barn and I felt like they went above and beyond to take every precaution possible. We originally booked The Barn because the weather a few days ahead of time called for rain so I thought a restaurant with a tent would be our best bet. When we arrived we had our temperatures taken (personally I think this is silly, but if it makes everyone feel safer I'm all for it). We were also politely asked to put on our masks until we were seated - this I 100% approve of. Once seated in their tent we were greeted by a few friendly masked waitstaff who got us drinks (vodka martini for me, old fashioned for the hubby) and some delicious warm bread. The reusable menus from one table to the next at other dining establishments has been my main complaint so loved that the Barn they has paper menus w/ specials on one side and QR code on the other to access their everyday menu. It would probably be a bit difficult for those who aren't as tech savvy (my parents wouldn't be able to figure out the qr code), but I'm sure they'd easily assist if necessary. We ordered a few apps (salmon tartare special, caviar sandwich) and then split the surf and turf special. Everything was really delicious and probably one of my favorite meals since this covid craziness began. You can't end a favorite meal without dessert so we split the pecan carrot cake, which was kind of like a carrot cake meets pecan pie...a very good combo IMO. My husband who isn't usually a dessert lover was a big fan too. They do have a 90 minute limit for each table of 2, but that was plenty of time to enjoy a nice meal together...especially since we've been together 24/7 since March. Our early reservation meant we were finished before our kids went to bed, but this just left time to walk/drive around our favorite college campus. Go NU! With the price point and the seclusion that this steakhouse I was expecting to be blown away. Sadly my experience at The Barn was simply just ok. Nothing to write home about or boast to my friends. I came here with some family members that wanted to eat a fantastic steak dinner and it started out great. The table was set immaculately, the bread was great, the French onion soup was fantastic and not at all inundated with salt as one might have expected. We got the burrata and heirloom tomatoes and I will state that I believe that good tomatoes are incredibly hard to find, these tomatoes were fantastic and had a delightful flavor to them. Finally for the main meal we all got the dry aged ribeye, rare, with the potatoes, horseradish and got two sides of creamed spinach and mac and cheese. The sides were great but the star of the show, the steak, was somewhat lacking in my eyes. It had all the flavor of a properly aged steak but none of the tenderness and mouth feel. There were aspects of the steak in which the connective tissue and ligaments were too stringy and hard even for my knife to cut through. In my experience it means that the steak didn't have enough marbling or intramuscular fat but who knows. Sad to say that my other family members also thought the same way and flavor is only half of the steak experience. A melt in your mouth steak I think is more than adequate for such a price point and establishment. Sadly although all the accompaniments to the steak were well done, the main guest fell a bit flat. As the name implies, the Barn's steak tasted as if it came from an animal that worked exceedingly hard at its job as opposed to one that was set to pasture and graze casually for the rest of its days. (Note: I would avoid the charcuterie board since it looks like Whole Foods items pieced together) The Barn is a cute place tucked away inside the heart of Evanston. With the loss of the French bistro, Homestead, and so on, it's nice to have a non-fast food restaurant back in the scene. As someone who enjoys dining by myself after some long days or weeks, I appreciate being able to do so at my comfort and leisure by the bar area. The vintage looking upholstery (but not actually vintage is my guess) complements the overall vibe of the restaurant. Steak tartare - It's a little denser and heavier than the French style but closer to Korean steak tartare (yukhwe). It wasn't too heavily seasoned, so you can taste the meat rather than just a mouthful of seasoning! Loved pairing it with potato chips. Crab pasta/spaghetti - What a delight. There are real chunks of crab meat in the pasta and loads of it. The dish wasn't too heavy as it was balanced by the tartness from pickled(?) shallots, lightly panseared (?) garlic slices, and spice from the chili pepper flakes. Beautiful pasta. I recommend the cocktails, which were well made, and they have an extensive list of tasty wines to pair with the meal. Appetizers were delicious with the burrata being my favorite. As for the entrées, I would recommend the bone-in ribeye with bearnaise. The staff were very helpful, and were willing to answer any questions about the menu choices. I have ate at a number of Chicago steak houses, and The Barn provides a wonderful dining experience. As a frequent customer of Chicago & suburbs top steak restaurants, my experience with The Barn Steakhouse was not one of my most favorable experiences. Our table all agreed the stand out quality item was the fresh made bread, otherwise the steaks were just ok. I didn't understand why there was a heavy gravy over my bone-in ribeye which masked over the flavor of the black angus meat. There was also no mention on the menu as to the grade of meat being served. I'm not convinced, because of the gravy that the meat was prime grade, but I could be wrong. Also, the wine by the glass selection was limited and the half glass pour, was closer to a third and not a half glass. However that's being a bit overly critical. We hosted a private lunch for 20 at the Barn on July 27. The space is intimate and warm, the food was outstanding, and the staff anticipated every need and was responsive before and during the event. We could not recommend the Barn more highly. read more

Very unique space. Tied to Morton's steak, by Amy Morton, paying homage to her father Impeccable service, the filet was absolutely amazing.
