Nothing about this restaurant is exceptional and food is simply terrible and overpriced. We tried duck, gnocchi, salad, shrimp, pate and 2 deserts. All were meh. Something that truly sticks out about Aboyer is the warmth they exude. I have been there on multiple occasions and the waiters and servers are consistently so warm and welcoming. Came here for the first time for a Sunday evening early dinner during restaurant week with the intention of trying out the restaurant menu. Luckily, I made reservations because even though it was early, the entire place was filling up by the time we were finished. They have a small parking lot, however due to their location, you can use the bank parking lot as well, especially on a Sunday. If you're familiar with Chef Michael, that is great and every reason to come here as he has been a staple in French cuisine on the North Shore for decades. For our group 2 of us did choose the restaurant week menu and one of us did not, and it did not disappoint. Service was absolutely on point and very attentive all night. Everything was super delicious. Well timed out great proportions and well worth every penny. If I had one criticism, it would be the steak frites because of the presentation. It seemed like everything just got thrown on the plate as opposed to there being a rhyme or reason to the pile. I would definitely come back here again, and I think this is worth the visit for French food in the suburbs without having to deal with the drive the parking or the city taxes. read more

Restaurant week helps me discover places I would have never known existed. A couple of friends and I made reservations for this quaint French restuarant. There was plenty of street parking available. We were seated once right away and asked of our option of sparkling, tap or bottled water. Our server was very attentive and it's true what they say with fine dining never let your guests water cup get empty. I ordered from their restaurant week menu and had a three course meal consisting of Potato Perigord Truffle Soup, top Sirloin Steak with Bearnaise sauce and fries, and for dessert creme brulee. The soup had me from the beginning it was so delicious and I love how it was served in a cappuccino mug made for easy consumption. The steak was served over fries and I was worried my fries would be soggy but they held up. And lastly for dessert the creme brulee was exquisite. The custard was smooth consistency. We were welcomed when we arrived and promptly seated. There were four of us, two being new to Aboyer. There was Happy Hour at the time so we ordered wine and appetizers for half price. I've heard nothing but absolutely incredible things about Aboyer, so naturally when we were looking at restaurants to visit for during restaurant week it was a no brainer to visit. Upon arrival, the parking situation is street parking but there are a few parking lots around for you to park in. Once we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted by Sergio with a friendly smile and he showed us to our table. At the table, we were offered sparkling or still water. Our friends opted for sparkling while my husband and I had still. We decided we were not drinking with dinner and wanted to enjoy the incredible food as it comes to fully appreciate all of the flavors. The water service was a bit slow considering how small the cups are, we sat with empty cups for quite a bit before we asked our waiter to just leave the bottle (mainly because we were just drinking water for the evening). While we waited for our food, we took the time to appreciate the ambiance of the restaurant. As the evening went on, the restaurant was bustling with more folks eagerly waiting for their table for dinner. Folks were able to mingle at the bar and grabbed drinks while they waited. To start, we decided to get cheesey bread (I'm so sorry for not remembering what they were called on the menu!) but they were incredible. Each bite was warm, and the filling was just enough to make it not overpowering, but super flavorful. We also got bread service with was an assortment of breads with butter and an olive tapenade. My first course was the Potato Perigord Truffle Soup. When I tell yoat i u, if I died downing in this soup, I'd be dying happily. The soup was light and the truffle flavor did not overpower the soup. For our entrees, my husband got the salmon and I got the steak frites. We decided to get both to share. The sirloin came with a chimmichuri sauce and a bearnaise sauce over a bed of french fries. The sirloin was cooked to perfection, even without the sauces the steak was enjoyable and with the sauces it made for a more flavorful bite. The fries were crispy, I had to get myself to stop eating them otherwise I would've been full just on fries. The salmon was prepared au poivre, meaning peppercorn crusted. While I'm not a huge fan of peppercorn, the salmon was delish! It was cooked beautifully, where it's not too dry or too flakey. It was served on a bed of potato puree and haricot vert. As if we weren't full yet, we had dessert. For dessert, I had the Chocolate Souffle. The waiter poured warmed milk (?) over the souffle. Each bite was warm, chocolately and truly what I needed to finish up my meal. The pictures and videos did not do our experience justice. My husband and i booked last minute reservations here for restaurant week. It's a small little French restaurant and it was thoroughly packed. When you walk in they offer you coat check which is really nice so you don't have to worry about it in this tight little space. We got seated but then it took THIRTY minutes to get water. There were people behind us that got seated after us and water and their food orders taken before we even got service. The food was good. My husband got the escargot and I got the potato soup as our appetizers. I loved the soup especially because it was so cold outside and it just warms you up. We both got the steak which was very tender. I got the chocolate soufflé which I wasn't crazy about. Overall if the service we got was better I would come back but I don't think it was fair how we were treated. read more

We had a nice meal at Aboyer. The food was delicious. The pork chop and steak frites were filling and tasty. The sauces on each was delicious. The Cote porc sauce is heavy, but not over-powering. We haven't been here in a while - since before it was split into Aboyer and Silencieux (which is no longer) and we were pleased that the dining room was larger, and one open space instead of cut into two. Our server seemed a little off that night, not sure if she is always condescending, was in a bad mood for other reasons, or irritated that two of the four of us arrived 15 minutes late. Whatever the reason was her style was a little less than nice and exuded irritation. We had drinks which are priced in the Winnetka stratosphere ($$) and my French 75 was almost warm but I dared not return it fir fear of her reaction. We had the starter of eight little stuffed gruyere gougeres for $10 which are delicious and we knew these from past wine dinners. Highly recommend those. Three of the four ordered the beet salad and although quite pretty it was really lacking dressing and we had to order balsamic vinegar and oil to amp up the flavor. My Lyonnaise salad was disappointing compared to all other restaurants preparations I've had. It lacked punch, was somewhat dry in terms of dressing, although the egg was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately overall it really seemed to lack the flavor that is typical of this type of salad. It was bland. Salt and pepper didn't help much. The sirloin steak with fries was seasoned well, and fairly tender. The fries were lukewarm at best and we did not complain about those either. The special of the day soft-shell crab with a stuffed zucchini flower was tasty, and fresh. My salmon was absolutely perfectly cooked - a nice crispy sear on top and meltingly tender inside with a perfect amount of seasoning. It needed a little more of the mustard sauce which was delicious, however I figured why be a pig and also why irritate the server asking for more! It was hands down the best dish on the table. Three of our party really wanted dessert so they made the mistake of ordering two of the same thing - the chocolate hazelnut cake. They were the last 2 pieces we were told. One was poorly cut, both had an overly gelatinous chocolate layer and were underwhelming. The chocolate hazelnut cream did taste good, but the cake also seemed a little dry. All in all it was an off night for the server. We will go back when we see the lamb shank on one of the weeknight specials. read more

I ate at Aboyer earlier this week and what can I say. Sergio greeted us with a welcoming kind smile and led us to our table and to our surprise our server was his son Jr. OMG the Country Pate and the Chicken Liver Mousse, I would push someone down a flight of stairs to get these in my belly. Of course, I ordered what I consider to be the king of salads the Salade Lyonnaise, come on, Frisee tossed in a beautiful vinaigrette with Bacon, croutons and a poached egg (its like breakfast meets a salad and said lets make a love child). Moving on I chose the French Dip, what can I say this was perfect for me, I just could have used more blue cheese (I ask for some extra, which Jr. graciously brings me a bit more). I didn't have enough room for Dessert because I already ate way too much but I had my eye on the Financier de Saison and will have to come back for. Then moved onto the entrees 1 Lamb Ragout 2 steak frites and 2 steak Au Poivre all the steaks were amazing never thought that you could make Hanger steak so tender and of course the sauce's are Fantastic here due to the fact that you have an actual master chef of many years and the best part is $39 you can't beat it unless you go to a steakhouse to spend $80 per steak. I came here for their cigar dinner with Up Down Cigar and it was a blast! There's very few places where you can enjoy a leisurely cigar while imbibing on wine and cocktails and have food that is a gustatory experience. I had no idea what to expect but for $125 per person, we got 3 cigars and a multi-course menu. As usual, the food is incredible and Chef Michael always hits a home run when it comes to flavors. This is it. The special occasion place. The place where we retreat to when we have the rare date night without kids. Hubby and I are extremely picky about our food, flavors, ingredients, pairings, portions. You name it, and we are particular about it. It's not our fault. We have been blessed with eating in gourmet restaurants in every part of the globe, plus our parents have trained our palettes at a young age. But listen when I say, the dishes are equally exquisite, yet comforting. Adventurous, but familiar. Cocktails, raw salmon apps, roasted chicken (obvs), steak, potato gnocchi, beef bourg (it's actually better than my recipe somehow ;) ), the voodoo they do with button mushrooms. Even the neighboring table's mussels I almost stole a bite. and that chocolate creme. And profiterole. And the wine pairings. And if that's not enough for your snobby self, then listen. Since the pandemic receded and restaurants reopened, we've become regulars at Aboyer and could not be happier. I would say Aboyer is one of the best French bistros in the Chicagoland area, and quite reasonably priced as well. Some of our favorite starters are the chicken liver mousse, the escargot, the bread service, and whatever the soup of the day is. For entrees, in the fall if they are serving venison, you must get it - roast venison saddle in huckleberry sauce, a chestnut puree, and sweet potatoes gratin, it is venison in its finest form, the best I've ever had. Order it rare. Other winners are their roast duck, and the steak frites. Many times they will have halibut or dover sole, so get on their email list for specials. The wine list is not extensive but very high quality, with some excellent Rhone selections. Excellent cocktails, a beautiful dining room, and friendly relaxed service. What's not to like? If you live in the City on the north side, and have quick access to the Kennedy/Edens, a trip to Aboyer can be as short as 20 minutes - often faster than going downtown. We celebrated a special occasion here. Inside it's not super fancy but it is a very nice place to dine. No need to dress up here. Depending on what the dish is, the portion can be small. I ordered the Aboyer burger for my main entree and there was a lot of food. The burger was exceptional, juicy, and well seasoned. The appetizers and desserts are also worth getting. Presentations look immaculate and the taste makes you crave for more. Price wise, it's along the lines of $$$. Yelp puts it as $$ but it's definitely not that. It's always good to make a reservation. Is there a Real-Deal french brasserie in Winnetka, IL? You bet there is! This is about as French a restaurant as there is in the Saint Germain des Pres district of Paris. The feel, smell, decor, menu, all just "spells" Paris. Us three souls wanted a nice Sunday Brunch. Our friend who lives in Winnetka suggested Aboyer and we jumped at having this brunch. This fashionable (yet cute) restaurant is tucked away off of a main street that makes you feel secluded. This seclusion makes this meal quiet and almost zen. I liked the calmness of what was going on here. My choice for this feast was their loaded cheeseburger which was short-rib and wagyu beef, Thai braised port belly, caramelized onion, a fried egg and Gruyere cheese then topped with a beautiful dijonnaise condiment that had this sandwich soar. It came with some excellent French fries. My wife had their Classic Eggs Benedict that came with a toasted brioche, grilled asparagus, black forest ham with a savory truffle hollandaise sauce. She loved her food. Our friend got the Bistro Omelette that had bacon, toasted brioche, potato gateau and preserved tomatoes. Everything we had was very good. Living in the heart of this city (The Gold Coast) I really like the action this area produces. But , sometimes (just sometimes mind you) I really like a "Chill" meal like the one I had at Aboyer. Definitely overpriced for quality and portions. I understand this is an upscale French style restaurant but I'd expect better. The bread board is nice and I loved the sun-dried tomato tapenade. The beet salad was just so-so but not bad. The escargot was the best dish of the night. It is 8 snails already removed from the shells in a small dish covered in plenty of oil and garlic. The brioche puff on top didn't add any flavor. By far my least favorite (or maybe tied with the dessert) was the gateau of crab. It is a crab cake with a seared scallop on top. The scallop was excellent but something was really oddly flavored in the crab cake. Plenty of crab meat but something about it tasted almost like crab that had gone bad. I didn't get sick so I presume it was safe but think "bad seafood" flavor. For dessert I tried two of the unique sounding flavors- banana rum and saffron passion fruit. We then had the salmon and tuna duo which was similarly incredible - my sister who doesn't tend to like seafood gave it a glowing review - incredibly fresh fish and very well seasoned. For the entree we split the steak frites which was 8/10 - wonderfully cooked with a nice balance of flavors. for dessert we had the peach cobbler which was phenomenal and the profiteroles. I dined solo at the bar of Aboyer last night (Friday 5/31) because of the soft shell crabs special entree they were serving that night!! It was absolutely DELICIOUS! I had it along with the goose foie gras appetizer, a truffled corn soup, and sides of asparagus and the heavenly, creamy whipped potatoes (pomme puree)! The whole meal was spectacularly fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented! Danny the bartender did a great job serving me (as did his other team members, who efficiently and promptly served each part of my meal plus cleared away any unneeded dishes and ensured my water glass was always full)! Danny also served me an awesome gin and elderflower-infused pear cocktail called the Oh Pear, which gave me the most awesome heartwarming relaxing buzz the whole night! So glad I'm on Aboyer's email list so I can catch those specials --they never disappoint!!! I will be back!!! read more

An extremely disappointing experience. Our family has celebrated mother's day at Aboyer quite regularly over the years (and I'm a fan of George Trois). But our service at the mother's day brunch this year was a horrendous disappointment - way below expectations for a restaurant of this caliber and especially price tag. 1. After receiving our round of cocktails, we waited more than 1 hour before our food arrived. Given that guests paid a deposit this year, there is no excuse for kitchen delays that long as demand was 100% predictable. When you charge a reservation deposit, there is an expectation of good service. 2. After 1 hour, I asked for baguette, which the server brought with the appetizers, defeating the whole purpose of the request. It is unacceptable to make guests wait an hour for any food (especially when drinks are on the table). 3. Before food arrived, two guests switched chairs. The server warned us this would confuse service staff and, sure enough, our table found itself exchanging incorrect appetizers and main courses. Really? When server already knows beforehand that 2 people changed seats, this cannot be communicated to staff? 4. Bottle of wine was finished by end of appetizer course. We asked to see wine list to order another bottle for main course. No-one ever brought it. After main course served, i was eventually able to flag down our server and ask once again. About 15 minutes later, the server brought the wine list when we were already halfway done. By that point, few people wanted more wine so 3 of us ordered by the glass. My glass did not arrive until after my plate was empty. No apology; no offer to comp the glass ... no nothing. 5. One guest ordered coffee which arrived cold (I can confirm). We requested another that never arrived. When bill arrived, we inquired about the coffee and the waiter brought another one, which was also cold. 6. I had left my credit card with waiter upon arrival and explained I wanted to pay discreetly and not to allow other guests to pay. Bill arrived without my card, so I had to request it. Waiter came back with my card and receipt only to start discussing the itemized expenses indiscreetly in front of all the guests (precisely what I had wanted to avoid). 7. When I arrived home, I realized the waiter had MASSIVELY under-charged. He had only billed drinks and 1 of the 7 meals. I immediately phoned the restaurant and, indeed, host confirmed the more than $500 billing error. After taking my credit card information, it was only when I jokingly pointed out they were lucky I'm honest that the host thanked me for calling. This is supposed to be a fine dining establishment. In the past, I have had some lovely dinners and brunches at Aboyer and its adjacent dining rooms. But this service was unacceptable. At these price points, there is a minimum expectation of service. At a minimum, an apology for the sub-part service would have been appropriate (e.g., manager apologizes to table). In other restaurants, I have been comped for considerably more benign service failures. VERY DISAPPOINTING AND VERY EXPENSIVE. When a restaurant charges a reservation deposit, they cannot argue that they were unprepared for all the customers. I will add one positive though ... my pea soup was absolutely delicious. read more

First visit here last night for dinner. Loved the outdoor patio which also works as fall approaches as well. They have ceiling heaters installed as well. This build out is well done in their parking lot. My husband really enjoyed the charcuterie board which featured a duck pate, grilled toasts, liver mousse, cured meats & pickled vegetables. We shared the lyonnaise salad which was traditional with frisée, mustard vinaigrette & bacon lardons topped with an egg My husband had the swordfish special which was absolutely delish. The initial order was timely but the wait from salad to entree was 40 minutes. Also the wait staff was absent for long periods of time. We ordered the steak and fries along with the chicken.
