I take a Sunday morning class, and we often hear the music from the main studio, which can be distracting. Most of the time this isn't too big of a problem, but sometimes it makes things a bit difficult.

We have been attending Monsters Dance Conventions for years, and though the training has been…read moredecent, a pattern has been consistent-- the seeming favoritism for awards and making Cast/Kids Cast, toward kids that dance super aggressively, jerky, and overly animated; even when they have zero musicality or natural talent. Anyone can learn choreography and dance "big", but not every child has the natural gift of musicality and creative dance ability. Just because someone is dancing HARD, doesn't mean they're dancing WELL. This important differentiation is often disregarded by Monsters staff/choreographers, and the kid who has aggressively bogarted their way to the front row, is moving very jerkily, and throwing hair around to compensate for their lack of musicality, is often the one praised and recognized for top honors. Unfortunately, this has in some cases, created a group of arrogant dancers whom have been pumped up and groomed to believe that they are more talented than they actually are, while some phenomenally talented kids with the TRUE gift of dance, are left doubting themselves, season after season. I have also noticed, especially in the Junior and Intermediate rooms, a leaning toward choosing White/Hispanic/Asian children for the highest awards; though they were clearly not the best in the room, nor had the best character-- while the little black girl/boy in the corner, that is able to dance circles around them, is left without even an acknowledgment. Though black kids are certainly nominated for Kids Cast, there appears to be a different bar for what is worthy of being recognized for top awards--and again, for some kids, a hard jerk, hair toss, and unnatural animation of facial expressions, is often all that is required to receive scholarships and Kids Cast nominations; while others with undeniable talent, that give 1000%, receive nothing. This has been consistent in the 8 years that we have been attending. And though they would likely deny such, there is strong evidence of politics going on... when you consistently see kids from certain studios, or whose parents have strategically created relationships with upper staff by being door monitor for classes, etc., win top awards, though again, they were inarguably, not the strongest dancer in the room, nor had the best character, it becomes pretty apparent what is occurring. Because of these things, we will no longer support Monsters Dance, nor line the pockets of staff who sell expensive dreams to kids, season after season, whom they know they will never acknowledge, nor give equal consideration to; while providing recognition and a career path, to some whom haven't earned it, nor were the most deserving.

He is learning how to play well with others and follow multi-step directions. I highly recommend the classes. My 21 month old son absolutely loves The Playroom! So much so that he tries to go in without paying. (Facepalm) They offer birthday parties and a variety of classes for littles! The staff is so friendly! The Playroom is definitely one of our favorite ways to burn off all that toddler energy!

I assumed that was unavoidable at dance studios until my daughter started dancing at Baltimore Ballet, where students get along and are supportive, the instructors are really kind and welcoming. My daughter is having a lot of fun and is making much more progress, much faster, than she had at other studios. It's really a shame she wasn't here all along. I agree with another reviewer--read the hidden reviews. These reflect my daughter's experience there. Can't imagine why they are hidden.

My dance teachers would NEVER have been so nice. I don't know what those other reviewers are talking about. When I talk with parents, they can't say enough about how sweet the director and teachers are. They also teach solid technique. Knees over toes. Square hips. Proper terms by the time they're teens. Technique that won't harm your kids' joints and will set him/her up for doing well in advanced work. The studios themselves are great, too--sprung floors, Marley, full mirrors, proper barres. They put on great shows multiple times a year with roles for students of all levels. I'm taking off one star only because the place isn't strict enough for someone to go straight from here to a professional school--but I think a lot of parents will LIKE that. My background is Balanchine (SAB) and Vaganova, but locally, I've taken classes at Baltimore Ballet and at Peabody. Baltimore Ballet would be my choice for drop in classes, adult classes, kids classes, supplemental classes, and anyone who wants the chance to perform. Definitely read the reviews that are"not recommended at this time." They are clearly from real students. The reviews that aren't hidden are just weird. All ballet schools require a certain color leotard, extra payment for performances, etc. Baltimore Ballet's performances are spectacular. Lots of class time involves rehearsal for them. If you don't want to pay, then don't, but don't complain that your kid can't participate. December = Nutcracker in dance.

I can't blame the space planning on the convention center, but the wildly popular panels were in tiny rooms and had to turn people away. The ones with less than 50 people were in huge rooms. It happened so often! Beside the usual set up of convention centers, I want to talk about the food since that's really the only thing to discuss beside sprawling, undecorated rooms. There were, by my count, two concession stands. Both were wildly understocked and understaffed! The top floor had a meat lover's paradise: meatball subs, beef hot dogs, meat lasagna (I think), etc. Here's the kicker, though: almost no one was at this one. The other was in the entryway, which caused massive congestion. The lines were insanely long, even at 3 pm when I ate (on West Coast time). They offered something called a "Spanish bowl" and that was their only offering. You could get either chicken or tofu, and by the time I was there, they were out of tofu and most of the toppings. Being a vegetarian, I spent $34 on rice, beans, shredded iceberg lettuce, a bag of chips, and a water. It took about 25 minutes to get. I also need to argue, on a philosophical level, that there was nothing Spanish (or really Mexican) at all about this bowl. Being from California, I think they were overselling it. They should call it "Tex Mex Bowl." Either way, it wasn't very good. But, like I said, it's a convention center, so I didn't really expect better. In that sense, it met my expectations.

I feel that the staff could have been more proactive in cleanup/reset, and a bit more organized. Other than that, the staff had really great energy and were helpful!
