Firstly, don't let yourself be deterred by all the poor reviews. I've read through lots of them and the majority are people who BROKE THE RULES and didn't like getting yelled at. Tough! This isn't a spa, it's a gun range where someone mishandling a firearm could mean the difference between life and death. Follow the very simple rules and you don't have to worry about the range master. I also saw comments on racism. I'm a 39yr old Latino and the staff has always been nothing but respectful to me, so please pay no attention to the sensitive snowflakes on here calling them racist. The Range: The range costs $25 per person, and no spectators are allowed. meaning that everyone has to undergo the orientation regardless if they're shooting or not. Newcomers will need to watch a 5-minute orientation video on the range rules before they are given their own lifetime range card. ATM is on site. The range has a split pistol and rifle range, with separate areas for shotguns and skeet shooting. Pistol ranges are between 7yds and 25yds (I think) and Rifle ranges are 50yds up to 300yds. All the bays are covered, benches have sandbags, and there is extra seating. Cease-fire occurs ever 20min. My Review: I've been coming here for years now. This has been the best 300yd range that is relatively near my home where I can sit down, smoke a cigar while I work on my load testing. The range does have a rule against FMJ ammo which is strange hence the 4-stars instead of 5. So make sure you bring soft-point ammo. They will check your mags during cease fires so don't try and be sneaky. They have ammo for sale but like most other ranges, you will be paying more. This place is in the sticks, just passed Cedar Park, so I'd make sure to bring everything you need before getting there. There is a gas station nearby where you can pick up some things if you need to. For those shooting 200-300 yds, they have a golf cart on site that you can use to drive to your target. It's your typical out door range setup, with rifle and pistol lanes with wooden backstops that you can thumbtack your targets to. (Tacks provided)They call cease fire every 20 minutes so you can replace your targets. They lay down the range rules, which takes a minute to get down but the staff walks you through it. I have never been here, and likely never will. Let me explain why. I write this hoping the owners might come to their senses but I doubt it. By way of background I am a retired career LE officer, SWAT trained and firearms instructor. I understand safety. There is a right and wrong way to do it. Screaming, yelling and bullying will ensure that the experience is ruined for the shooter and EVERYONE nearby, without really increasing safety. My impression is the staff is a bunch of grumpy old guys who are kings of their own castle. Secondly the whole "range card" is a bullshit profit add on. Keeps people from coming just once to try it out. $25 for the day is a fair rate. No credit cards is ridiculous in the digital age. Just a way to drive more profit at your own ATM. The last dig is no FMJ ammunition. There is absolutely ZERO safety issues and anyone that says so is full of crap. If their range is so "delicate" it can't absorb FMJ, they need to close down. Just another way to sell overpriced ammo because someone shows up with INDUSTRY STANDARD full metal jacket 5.56 and 7.62. Good luck with your business, your range, your rules. Good facilities, but my god the staff are not only rude, but downright belligerent and hostile, especially the man working the front desk. I have never seen someone who is being spoken to with complete politeness become so angry and aggressive at random (mind you, not about actual important things like gun safety, but about random petty things like questions about the range). I witnessed these irrational outbursts directed at myself, as well as other customers around me. One example: When renting a semi-auto shotgun. Me: "Sir would you mind showing me again quickly how this chamber works?" *looks up from his phone, throws the phone across the room* "I wasn't doing anything important anyway!" *begrudgingly shows me* Me trying to be as polite as possible: "Thanks, sorry I've only used over-under shotguns before". "You need to not talk over me or we're going to have a problem!" Apparently trying to have a polite conversation with someone is "talking over them". I witnessed him say this this exact same line to a husband and wife (and their kids) when having a similar interaction. I have no idea why anybody would want to interact with their customers this way, let alone anyone. It's like they are trying to pick fights to fuel some type of power trip. I was standing there mulling it over for a few minutes (wondering if I'd ever come back, if it was convenient enough, if I liked the vibe enough), when my eye fell on no less than two pieces of trump bullshit. Now, I don't expect ranges and gun stores to be very liberal, but I absolutely want them to at least be apolitical. It was great. The location is convenient for me. The men working the desk were fine. They ask you to watch a little video about the rules. You have to pay for a membership ($20 - good for life) and then a range fee ($20). I don't find the rules to be too-much. It's a way for them to maintain a safe place. I recently visited Eagle Peak and would like to warn everyone here about how rude and agressive the staff are. The man at the front desk yelled at and chastised our group after he mixed up our names and we tried to help him get it right. At the range, the officer yelled at least 5 other people over the hour we were there. They justify this under the guise of safety, but all they are doing is putting their customers on edge and asking for situations to escalate. The other issue is that this place is cash only - if you get offended or verbally push back, the odds are that they will kick you out without a refund or the potential to charge back your credit card. I would stay away from this place at all cost. The range itself is serviceable, but the way you feel when you leave ruins the experience. read more

Obviously based on the reviews, this is a love it or hate it kind of a place, not too much middle of the road. I have seen people get yelled at for breaking the rules, and it does seem a bit heavy handed, but then again there's no grey area when it comes to firearm safety. So I'll take overdoing it rather than doing nothing. That said, I have broken the rules twice on my many trips there, including one of the biggies, and I was spoken to professionally and courteously. I have never encountered any kind of problem with the front desk staff. I'm usually there during the daytime on a week day, evening and weekend staff may be a whole other group of people. But based on his accent, the weekday guy is from the northeast and they are more direct and to the point in the way they communicate, and that can rub some of us Southerners the wrong way, but it doesn't make him a bad person. As far as the range itself goes, with the closing of Best Of The West it's all we have left in the area, to my knowledge, that is open to the public and offers more than 100y distances. Operationally they do a fine job with a cease-fire about every 20 minutes. The benches are well maintained (they were all replaced a few years ago) and have screens between bays and about 6 sandbags in each. Most the time the target backboards have lots of tacks in them to secure your targets, but take some with you just in case. They recently installed a wall about 10 feet out and above the firing line to stop any bullets from leaving the range, and based on the holes in it some folks can't shoot for crap!! read more

Here is my detailed review of Eagle Peak outdoor range in Leander. In one word, it is awesome! As a first timer, I had to pay a one time $15 initiation fee, watch a brief five-minute video, and then pay another $15 for the entire day. That's right it cost me $30 to shoot all day. It cost my nephew only 15 since he had been there before. They have a wide variety of shooting areas, 7 to 25 yard pistol range, Rifle ranges from 50 yards all the way up to 300 yards, and tactical shotgun area where are you can shoot the hell out of cardboard boxes etc. as well as a skeet range. And all the staff were older retired gentlemen, very chilled and relaxed as long as you follow the rules. They are extremely adamant (and rightfully so) about staying behind the yellow line during the cease-fire for any reason. I broke it once to grab my bottled water, and the RO reminded me of the rules in a very appropriate manner. For a while today, we only guys out there. I don't really like the no rifle full metal jacket rule, but the guy said their insurance company made them do it. Pistol FMJ is fine and they will check your ammo if you bring an AR. We shot from about 1000 to 1430 hrs-- handguns, Long guns, and shotguns all for a combined price of $45 which included my $15 one time training fee read more

"The range is hot! The range is hot!" POW! POP! TAT! BOOM! K-ZING! BOOM! POP! CRACK! PEW! PEW! (Okay, I totally just made up those last two.) I recently went shooting with my boss and two of my co-workers over the labor day weekend. I believe i could be described as a gun n00b so I had to watch the video, get the lecture, become a member, etc. etc. I'd make the following recommendations: 1. Put your ear protection on in the car. 2. Don't be sassing anyone who works there. Seriously. 3. This is one of the better places to go if you tend to get nervous around firearms. Everyone around us was really friendly and helpful and seemed even a bit amused at three girls shooting guns. 4. Bring lots of ammo. 5. Be careful. 6. Have fun! read more

Eagle Peak is a popular range west of Austn. It's not without its sharp edges, however. The other reviews do a good job covering the cranky staff, etc. At $10 per day, it's not the cheapest range in Central Texas. It's definitely cheaper than the indoor ranges, but there is another public range listed on Yelp that offers a $65 annual membership for unlimited shooting. The pistol and rifle ranges at Eagle Peak are well outfitted with shelving space to stash your equipment and partitions to keep flying brass from hitting your neighbor. The drawback on the pistol range is that the targets are fixed for each station, and frequently the 20-foot target stations are all filled up, so you end up having to wait a long time for people to finish and get a station. Either that or waste your ammo on the long-distant pistol targets. Eagle Peak does not allow holster quick-draws, so CHL holders will want to look elsewhere for this type of practice. Clays are popular at Eagle Peak. The throwers work ok, but there is a non-functioning electric trap thrower I wish they would get fixed. read more

First let me preface this is a shooting range and safety is their UTMOST concern. If you don't want to follow the rules, then don't come here. There are safety rules for a reason. These are not toys. Every time I have been here the staff has been SUPER helpful and extremely nice. I feel completely comfortable coming here and know that I am safe. The entire facility is clean and organized. Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a secure environment to teach a new shooter, or even if you're a seasoned shooter. If you're looking for a full auto rapid fire high paced range, this is probably not for you. This is has a great outdoor long range as well as a pistol range, in a safe and very clean environment. I was hesitant to go here after reading some of the reviews from others, especially as a new shooter. I've been to indoor shooting ranges and "guntry clubs" like Saddle River Range in Houston. Let's be clear, this is not that. This is an outdoor shooting range in the country that is catering to a different kind of client. With that being said, I had a a great time. The staff was friendly and joking with the regulars and seemed eager to help or point our technique. I didn't witness any intimidation or yelling from the range officer and the cease fires were conducted in a safe manner. I'd give this place 4/5 stars because I think the range itself is a little worn down but serves it purpose. Overall I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for an outdoor range, even new shooters. As long as you're safe and follow the clearly given instructions I don't see a reason you can't frequent this place for shooting. read more

This is a great outdoor shooting range. I'm not sure what it's like on a busy day but when it's not it's very easy to access all the target distances for both rifle and pistol. This was my first visit so I didn't make it to the trap range for shotgun but I definitely will on my next. That being said, "the box", which is a semi closed off area to try out different patterns and shots for your shotgun on empty cardboard boxes is fantastic. I was the only one over there so I'm not sure what they do if they have a bunch of people that want to use "the box" but now that Best of the West is closed down, we need somewhere to check our shotgun shot outside of 7 1/2 and 8. And this was it. It's never a bad idea to familiarize yourself with what your 00 buck or slug pattern looks like before you take it hunting. A quick note on the comments I've seen about "rudeness" from the staff. While I obviously wasn't there for the experiences people are describing, I'm just going to say, on my first visit I made a mistake. During cease fire, when the RO came by and checks all your weapons, I didn't have my pistols pointed downrange, they were pointed to the side because no one was there. He called me out. No courtesy about it. Direct and abruptly. Could I have said, well sir, I'm at the end and no one is in that direction so what's the big deal? No. You stfu, admit you made a mistake, and say, yes sir I understand, it won't happen again. Was I endangering anyone's life? No. But it's bad form and he was right to call me out. These are firearms, not toys. Treat them as such. And if you make a mistake, acknowledge it and be grateful it didn't cost someone their life or a trip to the ER. Afterward the RO came over to talk to me and we had a great conversation and he was as pleasant as could be. My only "complaint" about the place, if you want to call it a complaint, is just that I wish it was a bit bigger and that "the box" area was a feature that they had several of. Basically like the tactical bays they had at Best of the West. Outside of that, this is a great place. read more

First let's be clear: Screaming, belittling does not equal safety, even if you are screaming the rules. Yes the rules need to be enforced but lots of gun ranges don't scream at people and they don't have accidents. I have never been screamed at but I have been with people who have and the "You are such an idiot" manner in which the rules are communicated takes away from what should be a great place to shoot. If you want to know what the Range Officers are like, think the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. (But their is same or better soup at other places) If you are looking to teach someone how to shoot, or just have a good time, this Is not the place.
