I visited the Earl's campus location a couple weeks ago for the first time in many years. While not much as changed, it did seem much brighter and open than I remembered it being. My friend and I were seeing a play at the Jubilee theatre later in the evening and made a reservation for 6pm. The restaurant was completely full with people being told the wait was up to 90 minutes so definitely make a reservation if there's an event going on at the Jubliee. According to our server, almost everyone dining there was also going to be attending the play. Service was very fast which is always appreciated when you have a tight timeline. I started things off with the Passion Fruit Chili Margarita. It was good but didn't have quite the kick I was hoping for. The chili flavour mostly came from the salted rim but it would have been nice if it had something more in the drink itself. It looks like one of my comments from a previous review was the lack of spice on a dish here so I guess I'm asking Earl's to spice things up! For my main course, I had the vegan tofu sushi tacos. They were tasty but not very filling. That wasn't a huge problem though as it left plenty of room for dessert. I actually ended up having the opposite problem with the key lime pie - while it was delicious, it was much bigger than I expected and I wasn't quite able to finish it all. read more

I have come to really like Earl's. It took a while, as my attentions were fixed on higher-end steakhouses, but once I realized Earl's was playing a different tune then I was able to appreciate what's on offer. Earl's has a wider menu than does a typical steakhouse, and it caters to a fun night-out crowd. This isn't a bad thing, it's just different than those who are bitterly disappointed by anything less than 30-day dry aged beef. For example, tonight we hit Earl's as the Oilers played, a tradition for us. Better food than a sports bar but complete with a lot of TV, boisterous crowd, and the obligatory Caesars (a Bloody Mary variant found up here in Canada). Out bartender, Shawn, mixed us the best Caesars we've had in a long time! Perfectly balanced, savory, without that common bitter yang. The short ribs were crunchy, tasty, satisfying. The tuna-on-a-chip were sublime - we gobbled down more than a handful of orders. The nachos were the only disappointment of the night; a dearth of cheese meant we were send a plate of heated tortilla chips with a dusting of jalapeño. Really? Ugh. The steaks and burgers and chicken wings we've ordered on previous visits have been great, as have the sides. Thank you Earl's for giving us a welcoming and comfortable place to eat and drink well. So I am not a big fan of Earl's to begin with. I think it is mostly because the atmosphere is a place where I think would attract douchy engineers and I avoid these places like a plague. That being said they have a great happy hour menu and it was super convenient to campus. Same atmosphere as all the other Earls, too much black accents, mood music that doesn't help and I think that the servers don't have enough clothes on. Our server was spotty with her service, particularly when we were taking our time sipping out beers. Onto the food. The menu is diverse enough that you can find something for everyone on the menu. Their happy hour menu is excellent. It has a lot of things on it that range from 4 bucks for a pizza (which my friend got) to around 16 bucks for the poke bowl (which I got). Food was decent. Not amazing but not awful and for 4 bucks for beer you can't find a better deal in the city for that. Would I go there any other time...probably not. Earls is Earls. It's your average run of the mill cookie-cutter restaurant. When my partner have a difficult time deciding where to go for dinner, we occasionally settle on Earls. We find that we always have great service and good food at this location. This location is extremely consistent and we've never had a bad visit. Last night we went for dinner, it was a Friday night, and we were surprised by how quiet the place was. We usually opt for seating in the lounge, and there were quite a few tables available when we got there around 8:30 PM. The hostess seated us quickly and our server was with us, and welcomed us back, as she clearly recognized us from one of our previous visits. This was nice. It's always pleasant to have staff recognize you and ask how you've been, even if you don't go there often. So that was great. Service was quick, food was hot and warm and tasted great. Drinks were good too; I ordered a Pink Frozen Lemonade which is very out of my comfort zone. It tasted like lavender and lemonade and was super refreshing. A great patio drink, even though I drank it inside a restaurant while it was pouring outside. We shared the spinach dip which is always so well made, and we also shared chicken tenders. Both of these dishes are staples that we share, and they're always done properly. I ordered the warm kale salad with chicken which was nice; it was topped with almonds, cranberries, and had potato halves in it. My partner ordered the Sicilian pizza which he loved. Food here is always good, and we've never complained. All in all, the experiences here are always good and the food is always worth the price. Happy hour is a great time to come since they have decent deals on food and drink. But for us, the main reason we continue to come back here is consistency; the food is always great and the staff are so kind and welcoming every time we go. read more

Okay, so I may have been a bit harsh with my first review of this Earl's. It's a little better than I remembered last. We recently gave it another chance since we had a gift card to use up. The lounge is a lot larger than the dining area, and is actually more comfortable to sit in. The dining area is too small, and feels really cramped with the tables so close together. You don't get any privacy that way. I had the hickory ribs and my bf had the quesadillas. I thought the waitress had gotten my order wrong when she brought it to me, because the ribs looked rather like a steak, having no bones in the meat. She explained to me that that's how their ribs are. Not what I was expecting, but okay. The steak -- I mean, ribs -- was pretty good though, just the right amount of hickory seasoning, not overcooked or undercooked. And I really liked the green beans that came with it for some reason. They tasted really fresh! My bf's quesadillas turned out to be really good too, but what I liked the best was his fries on the side. Who knew that some of the best fries ever would be at Earl's? The service was pretty good too, and I liked our waitress as she seemed really sweet, if not a little absent-minded. Most of the waitresses here appear to be quite young. Overall, a nice evening out at Earl's. We left with pleasantly full stomachs. Would I come back again? I'm not so sure. Maybe if a friend suggested it, but not out of my own choice. read more

When you first walk in, there are tables to the left and the right. Our friends were sitting on the bar side to the right at a table for 4. For a Sunday afternoon it was about half full. The server knew we were going to a show at the Jubilee so she ensured that we received our food and drink promptly which was great. I ordered the dynamite prawn roll ($13) which was 8 pieces and asked for the sriracha mayo on the side as I don't like it too spicy. The rice was warm and the prawn crispy. It was as Earls' food usually is, ok. I noticed an elevator and didn't know what it was for until I went to the washroom. The washroom is down a set of many stairs and then a hallway. It's nice and clean though. I liked the atmosphere of the place. Not too loud with the tv, tables and chairs that aren't too close together, and big windows for the light to shine through. I'm sure it can get busy though before a show at the Jube as we walked by around 6PM and there was a line up to get a table. read more

Earl's seems to be one of "the" places to hang out at on campus. It was only a Monday night, but the lounge area was full and people were lining up to get in. Obviously though, the place is appealing to more than just a university crowd, because many of the items on the menu are on the high side, price-wise. I had a roast chicken, in a white wine cream sauce with mushrooms, seasonal vegetables, and fingerling potatoes. The two breasts of chicken were plump and juicy and I could really taste the wine in the sauce, which was not too rich. However, there was nary a mushroom to be seen. I am assuming it was pureed in to the sauce, although I could not taste it. As well, the chicken had its skin on, which was soft and unpleasant - unfortunate, since much of the sauce was on top. I found myself scraping off the sauce and peeling off the skin. My vegetable was carrots, which were served sliced lengthwise and were a bit tough to cut or get a fork into. I thought the potatoes were cute, but some of them tasted a bit oily to me. As for my surroundings, it was dark, loud, and I felt out of place. Service was friendly though. read more

I've gone here numerous times over the years I've lived in Edmonton and I can't say that I've had bad memories of this place. But it hasn't been outstanding either. The menu has improved a lot in recent years -- I really liked the non-alcoholic drinks section on my most recent visit for example and I know that these particular drinks weren't offered on previous visits. Their renovation means that there's good ambiance even when this place is irrationally busy. But it's nothing special in the grand scheme of things. Came here with a table for about 12 right after the lunch rush. Seating was not an issue at all since it was a late lunch. Parking can be a problem unless you are willing to pay for it or have some sort of parking arrangements on campus. It is a university location after all. But, it is fairly close to public transit too. Despite quick seating, service was slower as well, even though it wasn't bustling with customers. The server did know her menu though, so it was good she could answer questions. Menu is pretty decent. I'm a little sad to see that bibimbap was no longer on the menu. But, they did have a $5 discount promo going on if you ordered a steak or a beef burger...probably as a result of that previous local vs. ethical beef debacle. No complaints here though! I got a BBQ burger with fries that ended up being as cheap as an appetizer, but more satisfying. I even had enough to eat as a leftover supper. We ordered a couple of appetizers and shared a bottle of wine so the same as last time. The difference is we sat in the dining room and this was a busy Friday night. I was impressed that despite it being busy our server always had time for us. She was pleasant, even under the pressure of a busy Friday night. The wine was nice, the food order included Chili Chicken and Won Tons, Hawaiian Coconut Prawns and the Sicilian Pizza. The pizza and the prawns were definite stand outs from the menu for us. Got Caesar salad, which the greens were crisp but there was about a tbsp of dressing for a large salad. I actually always order my Caesar salad light on the dressing, but this was so little it actually had no flavour. At least the greens were good. The chilli chicken was decent, although what happened to the cucumber and sesame seeds? What used to be chunks of cucumber is now 3 or 4 paper thin (wilted) slices. What should be fresh and crunchy is now flaccid and soggy. Chicken portion was large but it needed balance, not just bulk protein. Clam chowder. Yikes. If you're longing for memories of summer at the beach - this is for you. Every single bite had sand in it. Which is very strange because when I make clam chowder, it doesn't. Yes, use the nectar (I assume they come from cans) but for god's sakes STRAIN IT. Nothing like chewing on tiny pieces of glass every bite to really enjoy your meal. Completely forgettable. And for $43, also regrettable. I'm done with Earls I think. They used to pay attention to the details. Seems those days are gone. read more

I have a couple of annual treat traditions for myself. One is the largest size of movie theatre popcorn all to myself, with extra butter. Another is the Earl's fettucine alfredo with chicken and a side of pan bread. It's one of the few meals around worth every last calorie. Obviously there are some cooler places to drink along 109th or Whyte, but when it's -30 degrees and you really need to catch up with your best girlfriend over a round of Bellini's and you live on campus and those others bars are too far to walk to in the cold, Earl's is by far your best bet. I mean that in a nice way - the Earl's peach bellinis are fantastic. It's a fairly solid dinner option as far as chain restaurants go, and I've had a couple of first dates at Earl's restaurants that weren't horrible. (Although I've had better luck at Moxie's, for some reason.) Swing by for seasonal menu features or to watch the game over a pint and tasty appies. read more

The Earl's on campus is a strictly o.k. place. I don't have too much Earl's experience but I tend to feel that this Earl's at least seems to be a little off. I find it hard to understand what the Earl's is trying to be. Do they want to be a sportsbar, what with all those TVs showing games? Or are they looking to be a trendy lounge, with miniskirt-dressed waitresses and maître-d's; or are they a dining place? The food is also quite okay, with a multicultural entrée menu of average items. I think their burgers are decent and would ideally like to put an extra star for that, but generally I'm kinda disappointed with the overall experience read more

Food was okay, pretty average for earls. Our waitress was extremely slow and ignored our table for extremely long stretches, and the restaurant wasn't even half full. She said nothing to us as she gave us our bills, and nothing when she left the table with the debit machine. She did not refill our water glasses even once. I ordered the Cajun salmon and it came with roasted pumpkin, which is fine, but it was undercooked and extremely crunchy which didn't go well with the salmon at all. read more

Earl's is a great go-to when you're not sure what you'd like to eat. You'll find a varied menu full of well-prepared, quality, tasty food on the menu every time. This location is no exception - it has a great location close to the University (which is a double-edged sword as sometimes the tables can get pretty rowdy even on the restaurant side). It has a lovely patio with covered booths during the summer months. The servers and food are always good, as per usual for an Earl's location. The standouts for me remain the spicy and tangy Med Linguini, and the caramel and chocolate sauced Sticky Toffee Pudding. I'm drooling thinking about them, now. Drink specials are often good, and their house beers (Rhino) are excellent. If you're in the University area and stumped for a place to find a tasty and consistently well-served meal, Earl's is your spot! read more

On the worst possible times to go out and have lunch, we had made plans to meet up with friends on campus on a day where it just wouldn't stop snowing. It literally looked like Scarface sneezed his entire supply of ya-yo on the city. Roads were terrible, drivers were terrible, and it seemed like a perfect time to just stay in with hot chocolate. But, we mustered the courage and ventured out and I'm glad we went to see Earl's on campus. When we walked in around noon, it pretty much was dead: no one was inside, the tv's were broadcasting F1 racing (slow sports season on a Saturday morning) and the staff was slowly bringing up supplies. Speaking of staff, there was only one hostess and a waitress; it was that dead. But this is the kind of environment I would like. I don't want the hustle and bustle on a day like this. In a weird and sombre way, it was nice to not hear a lot of human voices talking about the frivolities of their lives as we waited for our friends. Out of all the places, it was nice to find some peace at Earls. What really impressed me was the windows at Earls. Quite large and encompassing, it gave me a great view of campus with fresh snow covering absolutely everything. It's not like waking up at the mountain or watching a sunrise, but it was the next best thing given the situation. Ordered a coffee to warm things up and had a chicken and brie sandwich. The waitress did warn us that it was sweet and I didn't mind. The chicken was neutral and the slices of apple gave it the sweet taste with a little bit of savory from the cheese. The fries weren't too salty but my biggest gripe was it was a little cold. Other than that, I'm glad my first memory of winter this year will be looking out those windows to see an almost deserted campus littered with snowflakes. P.S: the parking situation really sucks. We parked at the impark beside Earl's and it was $12 for two hours. We found out later there was complimentary parking in an elevated lot beside Earl's but it was near the top and only had ten stalls. read more

I have been an Earl's fan since the very beginning, and still view the chain as a local product. I like the consistency and the fact that they work to make it fresh. I rarely have a complaint, but after dining at this location the other night I had to say something. The service was excellent, and we were treated well, as always, but I ordered the Fish Taco and it was, without doubt, the worst fish taco I have ever eaten. I would swear it was made with canned tuna and stale coleslaw. I have spent a lot of time in Mexico and Central America, and I have eaten a lot of tacos. This was the worst. Seriously, I can get a better fish taco at Taco Time for $3.69. I will be back, but I won't be ordering this item again... read more

The management definitely listened and made things right. We were treated like royalty when we came back. I was so impressed with the care and attention they gave us. When we gave them a chance to serve us properly, we were visited by the chefs, and every detail was checked. Thank you Taylor and thank you Rhenz (sp?) for making us a night to remember. If there were other good options I'd visit this place a lot less. I've been there 3 times in the last month and was never that impressed. The first time we went we ordered the regular size california pizza and hot wings. The wings were good. We thought the pizza had changed because instead of being the usual thin crust, the crust was huge and toppings began halfway into the pizza. Big disappointment because the only reason we went to this location is because other locations don't have the california pizza. We asked the server if Earls has made changes with their pizza as we pointed out the obvious differences and she assured us this was normal. Next time we ordered hot wings and the happy hour california pizza. Basically its just a smaller version of the california pizza for $7. The wings and the pizza were both good. Enjoying our last experience we went there yesterday and had two orders of hot wings and the happy hour california pizza. They were short staffed...even though the place wasn't very busy. The server was friendly, just not attentive. It took quite a while for our stuff to come out and she brought the wings out first saying they're remaking the pizza because they made the wrong type or something like that. The wings must have been ready and waiting to be brought out for a while because temperature wise they were warm but far from hot. When the pizza came out they served it on a smaller plate and there were only 4 slices compared to 6 slices the last time we ordered the happy hour pizza. The server also didn't bring share plates which was odd because the plate it was brought on was small so awkward to share that between two people. As a chain, Earls definitely needs to work on consistency. Within the same location to have this much variation within such a small timeframe is unacceptable. The bathroom is in the basement which isn't a huge deal. When the bathrooms are cleaned they're pretty nice. But the basement itself always smells... kinda like garbage. read more

Came here for a date night with my husband on a Tuesday night as I thought they had the same specials as the other earls (pretzels for $2) but unfortunately they didn't. They said that different earls have different specials. Nonetheless we decided to stay and enjoyed the BBQ pork buns and some alley kat amber ale. The ambiance is really nice with large windows around to people watch and enjoy the scenery. The food, drinks and service was great as well. The only minor complaint would be parking (always a challenge in the university) and that they didn't even have any pretzels on the menu. First time taking out at Earls . . . Already familiar for almost 20 years with Earls Victoria, BC and elsewhere, we ordered takeout while prepping for UofA convocation. Take out menu was in our room at the Campus Tower Suite Hotel. Really easy ordering by phone - they must be used to it here - fast, efficient and friendly service. The instructions to pick up in 15 minutes at the bar was bang on - in and out in no time. Light, grazing lunch for three . . . The Margherita pizza ($13.25) survived the pizza box and had a fresh chewy thin crust with garlicky tomato-fresh basil-mozzarella topping. Not greasy. Could have used more mozza. Spinach dip with pita bread ($12.00) was good too. Creamy, rich dip with garlicky bread fingers. The only thing that didn't take out so well was the Mediterranean calamari, in a box with take-out quarter cup of tzatziki. The calamari was soggy due to sweating in the box. Can't blame Earls . . . . some things don't take out well, and I sort of knew it. Good effort on Earls part. I'd recommend it if you are staying at the hotel upstairs. If we had time we would have enjoyed the expansive outdoor seating option instead. read more

Decent enough place. Decor is nice and layout is pretty good as well. Went on a Friday night with a close friend and the atmosphere was nice! Food is regular restaurant-chain food. Quantity and pricing were okay, although not fantastic. Calamari was not all that crispy but other than that everything else did just fine. Servers were nice. Nothing out of the blue, neither amazing nor horrendous. Overall an acceptable place for an enjoyable time. Nothing special, but reliable at that. read more

We were at Earl's on campus tonite. The place was busy, but not packed. First, one of my companions ordered extra alfredo sauce on her pasta. The pasta arrived without ANY sauce. It was promptly removed, and another one in its place soon after. This one had undercooked pasta and she shared that the sauce tasted like warm milk. I ordered the soup. Mine arrived lukewarm at best, and was offered a new bowl. I received another bowl and while tasty, when I got to the bottom, I got a mouthful of cardboard - not sure what it was exactly. Earl's used to have such a good reputation. I won't be going back there any time soon. read more

As Earls go...I must admit...I enjoyed my dinner here more than any other location I have been at. A group of 4, we arrived at 6pm on a Saturday evening. Much to my surprise, we were seated fairly quickly. That being said, the place was quite busy and remained steady for the duration of our stay. I maintained with Iced tea for my meal, but the rest of the group indulged in many a designer cocktail from there trendy drink menu. My wife and I shared the Tuna Tostados while the the other couple indulged in an order of Calamari. Both dishes were well recieved. Mains around the table consisted of Grilled Fish Tacos, Bacon Cheddar Burgers, and Bibimbap. Everyone was pleased with their dishes. The Bibimbap was especially unique and well received. Our server was a very friendly and helpfull young woman who did a great job of keeping all our drinks full and assisted in explaining the dishes and drinks when necessary. All-in-all, this was indeed one of my best vidits to an Earls. read more

The waitress would pass by us, looked at us and it felt like we were invisible. Maybe because we were a party of two, maybe because we were women. Seems like a very sexist place.
