This was our first time going into Early to Bed. The store itself always gives me a tickle on the occasions The Doctor, The Queen and I have seen people go into the store, only to run out...HAHAHAHAHAHA! Guessing the name may have led them to think that it was a bed linen store. Anyway me and The Queen popped in there after leaving The Hopleaf as we saw a make shift sign on their door advertising a flea marker, so we decided to pop in to see what was going on. As it was my first time in the store, I can say it is well organize and they seem to have something for everyone for the most part. The overall vibe is chill and light, and the staff was friendly. I was not even aware that the store had a back area, so we were directed through a door and saw several vendors selling their products. There was a mixture of items being sold, from panties to stickers. I ended up purchasing two very cute purses and some stickers to pass out to some of my co-workers who are high performers who are not being appreciated that simply stated "You deserve more than survival", which they loved as it made them pause and think about what their value was. The prices were not too crazy and the two purses I got were well made. Again going back to the vibe of the store, it is very welcoming and feels safe from judgment. Me personally, I felt like this would be a store to come to for recommendations and questions it you were unsure of what you were looking for. And now that I know they have these market days, I am going to keep an eye out for that to see if there are any more cute purses I can purchase. read more

This is one of those places that you don't want to post about because it's a sex shop but it's the coolest one I have ever seen. It's not your average sex shop and the way they have it set up makes you feel like you are in a boutique. You walk in and all of the toys are set out and the inventory is behind the counter or in the back room. I have to update this good review to say that I'm no longer coming back to this store after a bad experience here with an incompetent employee and/or a dumb store policy. I was on vacation back to Chicago. Over the years of living near this place I had accumulated some punchcards from this place, they do this thing where it's like every $20 you spend gets you a hole punch and once you have ten you get $20 off (or something like that). I had a few punchcards since I'd been there at various times and didn't carry one with me all the time. One punchcard had four holes, one had two, etc. - I don't remember the exact details but I had about 14 holes spread over 4 or 5 punchcards. So my plan was to go back to this store while I was there on vacation, use 10 of the holes as one complete punchcard and get $20 off a purchase, and then come away with another punchcard with 4 holes (or more, if my purchase added any). This makes sense to everyone so far, right? It seems pretty basic to me. It was NOT, however, basic to the employees. My girlfriend and I found an item or two and went to check out. The cashier took my punchcards, combined them, and then handed me back two punchcards - one with all ten holes stamped, and one with four stamped. And then she tried to charge me full price on the current transaction. "Hold on," I said. "I want to use this one right now and get the $20 off right now. I'm on vacation, I'm not going to come back any time soon, that's the whole reason we came here." "We don't do that," she replied. "You have to use it the next time you come back. It's supposed to provide incentive for you to come back again." My girlfriend and I were flabbergasted. What do you say to that? None of those holes were new, and they DID provide incentive for me to come back, that was the whole reason I was there right now in the first place. I tried explaining this to her politely. "I already had those, they were just spread around. All you did was combine them into one card, but I had already gotten enough holes punched. That's why I came back, so I could finally use them." "Yeah, you'd need to come back to use them," she said. Extremely defensive, looking at me like I was being unreasonable. At this point I considered just cancelling the whole thing. Or like... walking out of the store and then walking back in. Would that have made a difference? I don't know. There was another employee sitting behind her who overheard. I expected her to jump in and clear the issue up. But no. "Yeahhhh that's just our store policy, you can't use them right away," she said. "I already had these," I said. "I came in with these. I haven't been here in two years, so I didn't try to use them right away." The girl in the back continued to give me attitude. "Yeahhhhh look. We can maybe make an exception for you this time since you're on vacation and all. But it's just our store policy. You're not supposed to use them. But I GUESS we can make an exception just this once." I felt like I was being pranked. What is there to even reply with in the face of such utter stupidity? She angrily finished my transaction with the $20 off and didn't stamp my new card with any more hole punches despite the fact that it should've earned a couple more. I didn't push the issue because I knew I was never coming back to this store again anyway. Granted, I don't live here anymore, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to come back much anyway, but this ridiculous experience has definitely pushed me to discourage others from going here too. Sorry Early to Bed, you used to be a great store. But you're not anymore. read more

Compared to the main stream adult store, it's almost spartan - there are no rows after rows of crappy DVDs and low-end sex toys. No, here we have a nice, upscale collection of toys, books and other decidedly non-skeezy items. Add to that a really fabulous selection of condoms and lube and other such items, and Early to Bed is incredibly healthy...and fun! Man, woman, couple (of any combination), drop by! Excited! It should always be a blast buying erotica or sex toys - yes! - and all too often it's creepy and off-putting. Searah (the owner) has several Youtube videos offering explanations and demonstrations of some products, so you may be able to get your specific questions answered in depth before you make a purchase. 8. They periodically email their clientele looking for product testers to make sure they keep quality items. One heck of a side job if you're interested.... 9. A very deliberate, hand-picked porn collection. It's not a huge library, but it's diverse and everything they have is there for a reason: locally made, xyz-friendly, or just a staff favorite. 10. It's very easy to do your research online and then find the product in the store. The open layout puts everything clearly on display. This also means you can't shuffle in and hide behind rows of shelving (as my husband discovered, fidgeting like a kid whose mom brought him to the Sears changing room on bra shopping day). But hold your head high! You're making good choices. 11. And of course, you can interact with the merchandise. All toys have a sample on the shelf (powered up, where applicable) to help you make an informed purchase. All lubes (all with a pump, anyway) can be sampled like you're in an effing Bath & Body Works. 12. In some cities you don't have a choice, but you do in the Chi! Enter - Early to Bed. An easy mosey from the Red Line, Early to Bed is a small, attractively arranged little store. Everything is easy to see, and interactive - there are samples of all the toys sitting out - you can turn them on, feel the settings, etc - but if you buy one, you obviously get a brand spankin' new one in a box from the back. The selection is small, but top-quality. You get the sense they aren't just stocking the shelves with random crap - everything gets the owner's seal of approval. When I first walked in, the woman working there was talking to a man, helping him buy some toys to use with his girlfriend. It was incredibly sweet, the way she helped him feel comfortable, answered his questions honestly, and really took the time to help him make a good purchase. She applied the same friendliness and involvement with me, giving personal recommendations of certain products, and generally being incredibly knowledgeable about what was new and "hot" on the market. And as everyone says, they are woman-positive (donation box to the Chicago Abortion Fund on the counter), queer-friendly, and believe that sex is a rockin' thing. Nothing seedy or gross here at all.
