My front and back yards are about 10 years old, but still look beautiful due to my diligent…read moremaintenance work. Some things I wish I knew then that I know now might help others when planning their yards. Yes, Smart Landscape does a lovely job. Here's what would have made my upkeep a lot easier. 1. Extra protection ground cover to eliminate weeds. Some yards get no weeds because a super heavy cover has been used. I've spent countless hours pulling weeds since yards were done. 2. Go over what plants are going to be used. If I'd done that, I would've saved money and work to remove those that had needles that made it difficult/dangerous to remove. 3. If the designer had visited front yard, he would have seen the slight slope and the DG pathway would not have been a logical design choice. Rain washes it away and I'll have to eventually figure out a way to close up that space. 4. At that time, I didn't meet with the designer. I should have. Although it's a lovely design, I would have pointed out a change or two I'd have preferred. 5. Gray DG is not readily available and it has been difficult to keep the pathway refreshed. Someone said that he was going to provide it, but never did. Overall, I am glad I hired Smart Landscape. UPDATE: I needed to come back to add another star after carefully considering how wonderful Danny and his team are to work with. I had met with no fewer than nine landscape companies before Smart Landscape and they were nightmares for various reasons. Danny is wonderful to work with and makes sure the customer is happy.

The project involved extensive paving, tile work, planters, irrigation, drainage, pergola, grass area, fire pit, custom/built-in BBQ, water feature, hot tub power, 220V heaters for patio, low voltage lighting and trees and plants appropriate for the area. Jeff came on site on occasion to check on the irrigation layout and progress, and placement of the lighting. He provided a maximum cost for the entire project up front so there wouldn't be any surprises and clearly spelled out the scope and his billing process in the contract. Joel was thorough and pointed out our property lines as drawn in county records, which we didn't even know ourselves. And when it came time to show us the design plans, it began with a draft, phasing out various aspects to spread out work and costs over time, and final plans in blueprint and digital form that described each plant and feature. He also recommended a great, local contractor to build out the plans, and the result is a backyard that feels like a haven to us and a beautiful gathering place to everyone who sees it for the first time. We dropped the ball on our end, for not getting educated enough and also taking too long to execute the project. Because we took so long, we ended up realizing a year or two later all the problems with the design. It wouldn't be ethical to complain at that point or ask him to edit the design. But since we paid over 2k for just a design, I would hope the design would work. Instead, the design has all sorts of errors from execution to also, whether or not it's good for the plants. Such as the way he places plants next to each other, if they are compatible, whether junk would land on our plants, whether concrete would leach toxins to our edibles. I feel like I just wasted a ton of money. I'm not sure what the answer is, but find someone that knows what they are doing.

He came up with a great design based on our wishes and presented that plan to us in person, which was a nice touch. From start to finish, our project amazingly only took one month--even with taking out concrete, putting in new pavers, new landscaping and sod, a completely new efficient sprinkler and drip irrigation system for front and back, as well as several other add-ons such as lighting and raised garden beds.
