My front and back yards are about 10 years old, but still look beautiful due to my diligent maintenance work. Some things I wish I knew then that I know now might help others when planning their yards. Yes, Smart Landscape does a lovely job. Here's what would have made my upkeep a lot easier. 1. Extra protection ground cover to eliminate weeds. Some yards get no weeds because a super heavy cover has been used. I've spent countless hours pulling weeds since yards were done. 2. Go over what plants are going to be used. If I'd done that, I would've saved money and work to remove those that had needles that made it difficult/dangerous to remove. 3. If the designer had visited front yard, he would have seen the slight slope and the DG pathway would not have been a logical design choice. Rain washes it away and I'll have to eventually figure out a way to close up that space. 4. At that time, I didn't meet with the designer. I should have. Although it's a lovely design, I would have pointed out a change or two I'd have preferred. 5. Gray DG is not readily available and it has been difficult to keep the pathway refreshed. Someone said that he was going to provide it, but never did. Overall, I am glad I hired Smart Landscape. UPDATE: I needed to come back to add another star after carefully considering how wonderful Danny and his team are to work with. I had met with no fewer than nine landscape companies before Smart Landscape and they were nightmares for various reasons. Danny is wonderful to work with and makes sure the customer is happy. read more

I had been searching for someone to do my patio in front of my townhouse. It was incredibly hard to find a quality contractor who would do a small job (and not charge for a big job!). Some companies wanted to do the hardscape only, others just plants. After meeting several landscapers and paver companies, I chose Danny and Smart Landscape, in part because they would take care of EVERYTHING from start to finish--concrete and tree removal, paver installation, irrigation, plants, painting, and lighting. We were introduced to Danny from Smart Landscape through our designer, Jack Sellinger. We evaluated a few other companies, but were confident Smart Landscape would produce the quality implementation we wanted. And they sure did! They quoted price was also reasonable compared to other options we solicited. Our project was a fairly large full front & back yard rebuild, and Danny estimated 8-10 weeks to complete - with a full time team that is focused on one project from start to finish. I think the final project took 9 weeks, and indeed the crew lead by foreman Daniel was at our property every day, full time, until the project was completed (this is a huge advantage over other companies who often jump around from project to project and you never quite know how things are proceeding). Daniel and his guys were phenomenal, with serious attention to detail and craftsmanship. They seemed very experienced in all matters of construction. They worked hard every day - even on some extremely hot days - to bring our design vision to reality. There were a few bumps with respect to project management that required my involvement to keep things on track. But I generally prefer being involved and keeping an eye on complex projects like this anyways (something I'd advise any homeowner to do for any non-trivial remodeling). There were also many micro decisions to be made, but I was able to easily discuss with Daniel and keep things moving forward. We had a few change orders on the project (mostly reflecting an expansion of scope that we requested), and each of them were very reasonable in cost (if anything, lower than I expected). Danny is extremely honorable and trustworthy, and you can rest easy that if you sign with them, they will not try to take advantage of you. It's been several weeks since implementation was completed, and aside from a small drainage issue with the patio cover that Danny resolved promptly, there have been no maintenance issues and everything has held up well. Even with lots of rain, the drainage is working flawlessly (very different from what we had before), as is irrigation and lighting. We're extremely happy with how everything turned out, and are already using our new front and back yards every day. In my experience most contractors can be difficult to work with in various ways - especially with attention to detail and timing - but Smart Landscape really exceeded my expectations and delivered a high quality implementation, exactly on time and on budget. read more

Smart Landscape did a fabulous job with our difficult backyard. We're on a canyon hillside in North Park. Our vision was to transform a steep slope into flat usable spaces. It was a big construction project with retaining walls, a Trex deck, tons of stairs, gas and electrical and plumbing work, plants and irrigation, lighting, underground drainage, and even a bocce court. They provided a detailed estimate from the start and always answered our calls/emails promptly, which puts them miles ahead of most competitors. Once they broke ground, the crew worked nonstop until the project was complete. Of course we ran into issues along the way, like some misestimated concrete work and a problem with the gas grill hookup -- but that's not surprising for this size of project. What's important is that any issues got resolved because Danny (owner), Q (project manager), Horacio (foreman), and Morganne (landscape designer) were always professional and responsive. Danny worked with us line by line to help the project fit our budget. Q kept us updated nearly every day via a group text with photos. Horacio and crew were talented builders who not only worked hard and kept the site orderly, but also invented some brilliant solutions on the fly. The project has been complete for nearly a year (since spring 2021) and we continue to be impressed with the work quality, the drainage during heavy rain, and how much we love our new backyard. We had such a smooth experience with Smart Landscape! Good companies are hard to come by, and Smart Landscape is an incredible one. From the start, Danny and Q were very personable, patient, and responsive. They introduced us to Peg, our architect, who created a beautiful design layout. She's well versed in horticulture and made it easier for us to decide which plants we wanted to include. Danny let us know early on that our project start date would not be for a few months. He said that teams of workers are at each job site daily until completion so we felt that it would be worth the wait. Sure enough, a few months later, Danny got in touch with us to let us know our project was next. Christian was the foreman of our project. He and the team are a great combo of knowledgeable, skilled, efficient, and kind. Everyday, they completed work quickly with a high attention to detail but not in a rushed manner. They often referenced the plans, and they included us in additional decision making when needed. Q checked in with us regularly, and he ordered the necessary supplies. Danny also came by bringing materials as needed. We loved that we could trust everyone and their abilities. We could express what we wanted, and they knew what materials were best to use for the project. We're very pleased that they chose better quality materials too. The workers built a solid, modern pergola out of redwood. Thought was put into the proper height and size of the pergola to fit the space and add to its appearance. We loved everything built from the retaining wall to the concrete bench. They're all nicely constructed from both a practical and aesthetic standpoint. There was also proper drainage added throughout the yard, and we opted for gopher wire placed beneath the lawn. We love the patio too! The framing was well placed by the workers, and the team responsible for the concrete pour was great too. That day, there must've been a dozen people working to make sure that the job was done well. The result was clean lines and a well leveled surface with the right amount of texture. Smart Landscape finished our backyard in January 2021 and we absolutely love what they did!  We needed a full renovation. Danny, the owner, came out to meet with us and assess what needed to be done. He was very knowledgeable and professional. He then put us in contact with Morganne, one of the landscape designers they work with. Morganne is awesome!  Even after she finished the design, she came by a few times to see how the project was progressing.  Based on the design plans, Danny provided us with an itemized estimate and timeline. And because we went with Smart Landscape, they reimbursed us half of Morganne's design fee.  What's great is that Danny also hired Morganne to come out when it was time to order plants.  She is definitely an expert when it comes to choosing plants and where to place them. Throughout, Smart Landscape proved to be an honest and professional company.  At the start, Q, our project manager, walked us through the breakdown of costs, explaining everything in detail and even offered suggestions on where we could cut costs. During the project, any changes we made or features we added were noted and Q would quickly send us an updated contract to review.  We appreciated this because there was never any confusion and most importantly there were no hidden costs in the end.  Payments were always made after a substantial amount of work was done and receipts were promptly emailed. Communication was excellent!  Q is very reliable and responded to our texts/emails in a timely manner. He visited often to oversee the project and if we had a question or concern he would come over quickly to address it. Q would let us know when it was time to choose colors/materials and he provided us with samples and enough time to decide. He did a great job planning because at no point was the crew ever waiting for materials to arrive. Q is very easy to work with and his managing of the entire scope of the project was outstanding! They were highly skilled, hardworking, and the quality of their work was top notch.  We appreciated that the team was assigned to our project full time.  Aside from one rainy day, they arrived on time every day and worked efficiently.  Horacio was an expert in all aspects of landscaping.  He was meticulous and always made sure everything was perfect. We are absolutely thrilled with the job the Smart Landscape team did for us! Our whole backyard was completely transformed, and we have been enjoying it everyday since they finished the project. I can't thank Smart Landscape enough for transforming our backyard into a modern zen oasis. I had an ambitious vision for our yard. We had pretty much a blank canvas to work with. I called up smart landscape, and the phone was answered by the owner - Danny. The same day Danny visited our home to see what he was potentially working with. Immediately Danny connected me with a designer, Jack, who thoughtfully included everything i want into the fully-designed plan. Because we have a HOA, we have to be very specific in our design submissions to ensure things get approved. I showed Jack all the rules and he created a design that fit the regulations. Because of this, our design was approved in record time. Before beginning the project, Danny created a thorough price estimate and assigned us a project manager, Q. There were no surprises with cost. However, as with any project, there are always unexpected issues that came up. That was out of Danny and his team's control, but Danny was always fair with pricing beyond the original cost estimate to navigate through the unexpected issues within our backyard. We were very grateful for that. The crew who built our backyard worked extremely hard from 7:30am to 4pm Monday through Friday. They even worked some Saturdays. We always knew what time they would show up and what time they would leave. Because of this, there were no delays in our project. Danny said 7 weeks, and it took exactly 7 weeks. Our backyard crew, led by the amazing Daniel, included Leo, Saul, Eric, and Jose. Q, our project manager, would stop by a few times a week to make sure everything was in order. Our designer, Jack, also visited the work site a couple times through the duration of the project to ensure everything being built matched the design. Anything we asked for, Smart Landscape made it happen. This was an amazing investment in our home, and now our backyard has become a favorite in our neighborhood. There were a couple times where we needed something fixed or a plant replaced, and Q happily arranged for that to happen immediately. Smart Landscape did a fantastic job on our project!! We live in Sorrento Mesa/North Mira Mesa, end of a cul-de-sac, on the canyon. We inherited an old deck on the side-yard that was falling apart and also had critters living underneath. And, we also had a large front-yard that we'd given up defending from gophers after a years-long battle. We had seen some Smart Landscape projects around town and liked their style. So, we finally decided to call them to address our issues and design a nice livable space to enjoy along the canyon. It was a much bigger job than we expected, but well worth it and reasonable for what we wanted. You only live once! Jennifer Webster was the Designer and she was perfect. Very friendly, attentive to our issues, concerns, and ideas. The front yard is large for the area and the last thing we wanted to do was to simply put fake turf over the whole thing. Aside from increasing our private space by placing a new fence even with the corner of the garage, we didn't really know what we wanted to do with the rest of the front-yard down to the sidewalk. Jen came up with a wonderful design, and we settled on a really cool planter area with DG floor and protection underneath to keep the gophers out. Smart Landscape then executed on the design, lead by the owner Danny and his foreman Q. They were great to work with, and we were really impressed with Q's service and enthusiasm. Work began in late Nov and was mostly finished by Feb, despite rain delays. Everything looks perfect, great quality, and very true to the design. The front gate they fabricated turned out great, and so did the patio cover and decking/steps around our new hot tub. Q made thoughtful suggestions along the way including the idea of a reclined back for the bench around the hot tub...a perfect touch! As with every project, there have been a few things to touch up and tweak and Q has been very responsive getting things addressed to our satisfaction. They installed new plants, mulch, new turf, new deck, new irrigation system, and new pavers. Workers were here everyday until project completed. Along the way, Danny listened to my concerns and addressed them right away. I made some last minute changes to the design plan and he accommodated and adjusted the price to reflect the changes. Smart Landscape recently remodeled our backyard, and we are in love! Everything turned out perfectly. They helped us take a backyard that was not very usable, and create a gorgeous space that is fuctional and looks amazing. They helped us create something that was even better than we envisioned. We removed some huge planters and plants, added a turf area for our kids, and then they built a custom bbq with all of our requested components. They are professional, very quick (this entire thing only took a couple of weeks!) and flexible. We price comp'd a lot of different companies and Smart Landscape was the most affordable and they were able to give us everything we were looking for, for the best price. This is a great team of honest professionals who do high quality work. They were here every day as they promised and even worked some weekends to stay on schedule. They were on time, on budget, and super nice - every one from the Danny owner, to Quang the supervisor, to the guys that did the work on site. They went above and beyond to make sure every detail was done to our satisfaction, and never tried to nickel and dime us for little things here and there that I knew were not necessarily in the original budget. Jack Salinger was the landscape designer that Danny referred us to. He created a beautiful design for us and what was even better was that he checked in regularly on site to make sure the design was being carried out correctly. They have worked together many times before and you can see that in how well they work as a team. I have referred a friend to them and wouldn't hesitate to keep referring them. Nothing these guys cannot do! SMART re-did my back and front yard during the fall of 2022 and finished right on time. They were on site every day and the project manager Q who is fantastic, was at my house every week to review the plan and answer any questions. They fixed any issues afterwards quickly and answered any concerns right away as well, this is after payment! Nobody does that. They took an overgrown garden and transformed it to a creative, inspiring place.
