My first impression was that this store must be new, particularly given the empty retail space nearby. However, there are google reviews that predate this one by a year. This makes it less excusable that the store just didn't seem to be fully stocked. The produce section was a small corner of the store. Prepared foods was a much bigger entrant, as was the freezer section. The lack of fresh items seems contrary to the health food vibe. On the upside, you'll struggle to find a place that has more niche brands with vegan, gluten-free, and other specialty items. The local focus is also appreciated. On the downside, I was surprised how expensive it was, and that's with shopping the sale items and the $1 credit I apparently picked up by shopping at the Roanoke Earth Fare. Their chicken fillet pieces soaked in the sweat and sour sauce were the WORST. I really hope this rural town's chefs taste Korean fried chickens one day and how to make the Korean marination. Aren't they watching any YouTube videos to research? These poor people are missing out the world finest taste of how fried chicken could be differently made, and Earth Fair's chefs or cooks in Cburg were not the opposite case of missing it. Nice big parking lot , clean and organized store and the juice / coffee bar is wonderful. Everyone is so nice , I should not be surprised anymore but everytime I need help they go over and above but mostly they are ahead of my question and take the time to deliver great service before I even ask. Marsha made me a latte that was perfect , she made it with a big smile and asked if I wanted cinnamon and nutmeg before I even thought of it. The broccoli cheddar soup is my favorite from the hot bar - the broccoli is not pieces but whole stalk and floret , great texture not mushy that taste very fresh and the soup base is nice and thick. Earth Fare is apparently the Whole Foods of Roanoke. I've come here for the $9.99/lb. cookies and Wednesday special sushi, and it's worth coming back at least for those. The brands they stock remind me more of Trader Joe's, which is why you wouldn't see me shop here too often. ++ Sushi boxes are a decent value and quality at $5 on Wed, and I especially like crispy shrimp and crispy crab rolls. The chocolate coconut macarons are by far my favourite of all by-the-pound snacks. "Heirloom" juice bar has a black tea and it is decent. The Happy Hour special is only for juice purchases! This place is amazing. Large variety of produce and healthy snacks. Their frozen section is also fairly extensive and they have a great selection of Amy's organic meals! They have a huge salad bar, fresh pizza, and more! The bakery looks delicious as well! I came here specifically to look for healthy snacks to munch on at work and was overwhelmed by the number of options. They have EVERYTHING! Although I felt the items were slightly overpriced, I felt it was worth it for the quality. Many of the items you'll find in the store are so unique and I guarantee you won't find them elsewhere. Friendly staff but the shoppers were rude and entitled. Had one cut in front of me in line and another place their order while I was at the counter. Luckily the staff continued helping me and asked them to wait but the gall! The store itself is clean and organized. Was a bit surprised they don't offer any sugar free desserts in the bakery. They have gluten and vegan, but no sugar free. This reminds me of a smaller version of fresh market or Whole Foods. They have a large organic fruit and veggie section and the produce is fresh. Their Friday pizza deals are amazing. You get a massive freshly made pizza for $7. It's hit or miss. The last two were swimming in sauce. Either way, a great bargain and still tasty. Plenty of parking in a maze of a shopping plaza. There's only one way in or out and it's about a block from turning in the entrance off a busy street. I didn't see much on the shelves that spoke to me the past couple visits but I'll still come back for the pizza and prepared foods. read more

We blew into town on our way from Atlanta Pennsylvania, and we just wanted to grab a quick, healthy lunch. This sushi pictures on Yelp looked amazing, so we pulled in. This is about as good as grocery-store sushi gets, folks. Sure, the sashimi is cut a little thin, and nothing is deep fried and drowned in mango sauce or strives to be a post-modern symphony of three kinds of fish and a rainbow of roe. But who needs that for a quick and healthy lunch? My husband grabbed some California rolls with brown rice. The fish was fresh and the avocado-to-fish-to-rice ratio was perfect. I got the California roll (white rice)/sashimi combo. Both the salmon and the tuna were lovely, and the rice was seasoned perfectly. We also got some vegetable spring rolls--like salad in a rice skin--and it was perfection. I love Earth Fare--healthy and socially conscious without being over priced and pretentious. Great addition to Roanoke! + Ambiance is bright, clean, organized and cheerful! EF has smaller foot print like Sprouts and local Fresh Markets. EF has all departments like a regular grocer, just smaller. ++ Products EF carries are higher percent of organics and non-GMO than a conventional grocer. Highlights are: ++ Large selection of fresh produce (organics, non-GMO and standard) ++ Bulk foods in both gravity and lidded containers with very good labeling + Small seafood section carries frozen, farmed and wild caught = Small meat section carries Australian grass-fed beef, domestic choice beef and poultry + Good Dairy selection with the usual local milks, protein nut /soy milks, wide selection of butters including cultured, decent choices of eggs including pasture raised eggs ++ Large selection of cheeses + Bakery bakes premade frozen half dough/breads so they can call it fresh....didn't see any focus on gluten free or sprouted (Udi, Ezekiel found in separate areas;-) *98 cents baguette is yummy and probably the best deal in town! ++ Deli carries whole cooked meats, not prepackaged conventional mushed up mess, premade salads for omnivores and vegans. * Wednesdays they offer 1/3 lb. of protein and 2 1/4lb. veggies for $6!!! + Dry goods and frozen aisles were well stocked and found the usuals: Bob's Redmill, EVOOs, vinegars, organic teas, protein bars, nut butters, Organic Valley, frozen meals & vegetables, canned goods, jars, etc. ++ Good sized vitamins and supplements - Donna, dept. manager is very informative! + Large sections of wines and beers ++ Juice bar + Service was friendly and very helpful! EF is still very new and will take some time for the local team to get up to speed. Behind the counters, out of town launch leaders and coaches were helping with product knowledge promotions being run. - Prices were in line with WFM and FM. Much higher than Sprouts and Kroger natural section for same items/brands. = Parking was tight but free. Over all, Earth Fare is a welcome addition to Roanoke for people seeking healthier options. This store has the best options for fresh organic produce, deli, bakery, bulk foods, beer/wines, cheeses and supplements! But if you want meats or cheaper prices, I'd go elsewhere. A couple things that could be better are 1) pricing...its high like WFM and some products even higher and 2) marketing signs everywhere pushing healthy. IMO, EF is no healthier than Sprouts, WFM and organic/natural sections of Kroger. It's still a great alternative to FM and Grandin Co-op for Roanoke especially to South Roanoke residents! read more

I always liked EF. I used to get 75 gallons of water a month. Love the seafood and the lobster bisque although very little actual lobster. I add crab to it! Last time I went I was asked to wear a mask. My O2 is always low anyway do to obstructive pulmonary apnea. It's between 90&93 usually. When I wear a mask it drops closer to 85. It's been suggested I take my temp, wash hands often & go out only when I have to. I've been to EF many times since they opened & never told I HAD to wear mask. Guidelines say unless health prevents it! But the guy n EF shoved a box of masks in my face & said "by law you must wear a mask". I explained my situation and he said "then u can't shop here". That's discrimination on the highest level! I'm not sick, I use hand sanitizer if they have it, I wash my hands b4 I leave home. I take precautions. I take immune support. I haven't been sick at all n years!! I used to spend a lot of money there, I cook 3 meals a day most days. For 4-5 ppl. I won't shop here again!! Not that they're concerned. ADA is clear about those of US who have disabilities! I watched a guy outside smoking, picking his nose and rubbing his hands thru his greased hair then went inside and started putting veggies out without washing his hands!!!! The guy in deli got upset bcuz I didn't see the gloves to put on & I filled a container with soup, he came out & got the spoon & replaced it with another one. Without removing his gloves that touched the spoon I touched he continued preparing food behind the deli case, touching meat & cheese! It seems they want to make us feel bad bcuz we can't wear a mask but they don't use safety procedures themselves! Those who ring up my groceries also touched groceries while ringing them up, weighing produce & such. But don't clean between customers or clean the carts or freezer door handles etc! Fresh Market doesn't have the same variety but they understand some of us have issues & can't wear a mask but it doesn't mean we're gonna make someone sick!! read more

It's without a doubt more expensive in general from any other grocery store, but great selection of higher end products. Love the smoothie bar! Over priced. Some of the lowest quality fruits and veggies in Roanoke. Fish/meat section always smells of old fish. Decent bakery. That said, they have s few things not available elsewhere in Roanoke. Deli and juice bar have some of the rudest customer service I've encountered anywhere. They deliberately ignore customers. I really enjoy buying my groceries here because of the fresh produce, Poland Spring sparkling water, and delicious cheese options. I am also obsessed with the Earth Fare 7-Grain Bread. But I am giving a 4 star review, not 5 star, for two reasons: 1. The smoothie bar would be perfect, but the fruit is frozen...even the bananas. Seriously? This is a grocery store! Why can't you put fresh bananas in, at the least? Berries I could maybe understand because they are so much more expensive fresh, but I can't understand the frozen bananas. Please put *fresh* fruit in your smoothies. 2. The sushi is awful, it tastes super fishy and gross. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely better than Kroger. But please take some notes from Whole Foods, who has the best grocery store sushi ever. The Earth Fare sushi seems to be made of low-quality ingredients. read more

I love this place! Freshly baked bread that tastes like real bread, the butcher is great for my husband, very fresh meat, and they have tons of veggie meat options for me. The prepared meals are amazing too! I had lasagna and my husband had roast beef with green beans and potatoes, delicious!!! I thought it tasted much better than Fresh Market and was cleaner too, and better customer service, and more options! There is something overly corporate about Fresh Market and EarthFare is an old school natural grocer from the 70s in Asheville. They are the real deal. I am going to buy some cosmetics there as well. I was surprised that the last review i read about Earth Fare was 3/7/19! And those owners apparently closed Earth Fare until it was purchased by another party sometime in 2020. But the old ads are still posted on Yelp and they don't seem very fair now. How about giving them a clean slate? My return experience, August 2020, was great, there was a good selection of products, fair prices and positive energy. They are rebuilding the market again and I am grateful. I'm fairly new to the area, was glad to find this market that reminds me of Whole foods back home. that is where the resemblance stops. there is always a line, no one @ customer service, clerks doing double duties. Yesterday, I bought a root vegetable (yucca) cut a piece at the ends to find out it was rotted, the next day i returned it to found out the tip i cut, will be taking out of the price i paid, because a fraction of an ounce was missing. The store is obviously seriously understaffed, as you constantly and consistently have to wait to be helped. The olive bar is never changed out, only covered up with plastic wrap overnight. Same with the deli and salad bar. The prices are way over, go to the coop or fresh market. Whatever earth fare is trying to accomplish, they need a lot of work from the top down. read more

The food is always nasty and under seasoned. I bought the Mexican Special with the corn cheese and mystery meat. The rice was undercooked and tough; the other food had no seasoning. I paid almost $12 and had to throw the whole meal away. It was unpalatable!!! Not the first time I tried the soup as well and had to throw it away too. Get another chef!!! read more

While I still prefer the Roanoke Co+op, it's nice to have another health food store with bulk items in town. This place feels more like a regular grocery store, mainly due to it's size and lack of vibe. I was looking for an elusive vegan item and a clerk was very helpful and spent a good 15 minutes trying to find it for me ( they don't have vital wheat gluten). The staff are friendly, outgoing and the employee morale is good ... something I don't see in most chain stores. They actually make eye contact and smile. They really push the meat and dairy, which was a turn-off for a store I expected to be environmentally conscious. There is a huge variety of organic vegetables and fruit in the produce department. I wish the vegan alternatives to meat and cheese were there, with the veg, so I didn't have to wander through the cruelty-participating meat and dairy departments. Overall, I would come here to find a needed organic produce item unavailable in Roanoke Co+op or the Farmer's Market or bulk items, if they were significantly cheaper. read more

My friend and I went here for the first time loved it! We strolled through the entire store to see everything that they carried. And was able to purchase some groceries. We also had a super lunch. Bathrooms are super clean; of course it is a newly open-store. I would have given 5 stars but some of the prices were way too high, we all want to eat as healthy as possible but not at the expense of not being able to pay my mortgage. read more

I love this grocery store. Some things can be expensive but a lot of things are the same price you'd pay in a store for a "regular" preservative filled, antibiotic infused whatever. They have a little cafe inside where they make a lot of sandwiches and pizzas and other things. They have a grab n go food section that has ready made sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, etc. their baked goods are delicious and I like how we can see them make it. Their muffins are huge! I love that it's a grocery store that I don't really feel like I have to stand there forever reading labels to find what I want. I'm a college student on a fairly low budget and I have to buy some things elsewhere for money's sake but I shop what I can here. Their rotisserie chickens are $5 every day right now, and they also have different deals throughout the week. I've seen a lot of things for vegans and various dietary restrictions too so that's nice.
