Eats is a neighborhood store that has undergone several improvements over the last couple of years, which to me elevates their status relative to other Blacksburg grocers. They have reorganized their offerings, and they offer weekly sale items as listed in a commercial-style flyer. They began carrying Cadadia ("every day") brand that offers competitive prices on numerous staples. Their bulk prices are usually LOWER than the pre-packaged item at Kroger. You'll receive excellent, knowledgeable service as needed. Yes, many of the prices are higher than Kroger, but what Eats offers is local and/or TRULY organic food (unlike larger commercial brands.) Oh, and there is a discount for seniors on all items, every day, all the time. I abandoned the corporate shopping mentality, and I love Eats. read more

This is a small store that is aesthetically more like a general retail outlet than a grocer for some reason. The selection is modest and prices high, but I did find some items from good brands and local things that probably would not have been in a conventional grocery store. It's good that this sort of place exists, though I would hope a college town could sustain more. read more

Well I made a cardinal sin of parking there while I was going to grab a coffee and go back i and shop at their establishment. Employee came out and saw me walking and stated I could not park there. Unbeknownst to her I was meeting someone to shop there but alas. I said i would leave and remove my vehicle which I did. Also there were several other parking spaces empty as it was early am. I enjoyed going to this store, up until today. One of the guy employee yelled at me at my 2 yr old son. My 2 yr old son ran to the play area not knowing it was closed for cleaning, when I realized the sign- I got him to leave. The entire time, I saw this male looking at my son- as I approached check out- the male asked me if I read the sign and can I control my son. In front of everyone at the store- my son was so scared he hid in clothes until we left. I've come to this store 3-4 times a week, I will not be back until this is resolved. Eats is a well stocked natural foods store. They have a large selection of specialty cheeses, as well as a large amount of bulk items available (nuts, beans, rice, granola). They also source local eggs and produce if you can't make it to the farmers market! I also think Eats is the best place to get coffee in the area (and the cheapest, too!). If you purchase a membership (for 10$/year) you get a discount on every purchase (15% off!). Definitely worth it. The other natural foods store in Blacksburg is very similar, Annie Kays, but does not carry nearly the same amount of cheeses that Eats offers. Update -- Would love to see Eats offer an indoor eating area... with a small cafe. Blacksburg needs more healthy lunch options! read more

What a great natural foods store. If they don't carry it they'll order it at no extra charge. They carry so much produce from local vendors that it's a great supplement to the farmers market. I love their cheese counter. They are really knowledgeable about the things they carry. They even carried Evo pet food before Innova bought them....Innova is still good though. Don't forget fresh bagels from Roanoke on Thursday! I miss Eats and wish it were in KS rather than in VA. Hopefully I'll find something similar here soon. read more

The Good: -- 15% discount for only $10 a year. If you go in there enough (like me), this is so worth it! -- the prices are already very reasonable. Usually about the same as buying online, and I would rather support local. -- nice cheese and produce selection -- convenient location if you live or work in Blacksburg -- the cheese counter lady is very nice -- I like the rock and gem counter. They have really killer prices on that stuff too! The Bad: -- most people who work there are rude, stand-offish, or just have not been trained to say "Hi, how are you today? Do you need any help?" -- the old man is the worst. He is SO RUDE, and I think he is the owner. Totally not cool. -- they do not do a very good job with rotating the inventory, and I have accidentally bought things that have already expired. Also, they will mark down the out of date items that they find and still sell them. I find this to be a little tacky. Especially when they sell expired salad greens or broccoli that clearly is rotten or moldy. I don't mind ugly clearance fruits or day-old greens, but once the produce is inedible, its time to toss it, not sell it. Bottom line: I go to Eats 2-4 times a week. It is a nice store over all, and I would definitely pick them over Nature's Outlet in Roanoke (also snobby, but WAY overpriced and no real grocery section). I love getting my organic produce and fancy cheeses at Eats. I bike commute, and it is very convenient to my house and work. I just wish Eats trained their staff a little bit better on key points like on customer service and cleaning and stock rotation. As someone who has worked retail for almost 10 years (in health food/natural food stores), Eats could be more well run. For the large number of employees they have (everyone must get 10 hours a week or something), someone should be taking down entire sections of merchandise and checking for expiration at least weekly. read more

(I would really like to give Eats 4.5 stars.) Eats is one of my all time favorite locally owned grocery/natural foods stores! A lot of natural food stores are more pills than food, but Eat proves the exception to the rule with great selection of food and a smaller (but sufficient) selection of vitamins and homeopathic medicines. The bulk bins are a fantastic way to stock up on pantry staples without over purchasing or overspending. My total always ends up costing less than I think it will because I only buy what I need. Tips: - Get a membership. It will pay for itself in a couple of visits. - Note: They don't sell many meat products, so you will have to go elsewhere to get local meats. (Farmer's Market, Annie Kay's, Mikie's 7th in Newport) - Treasure Hunt: If you look in the left bottom corner of the cheese case (the second one from the right) you will be rewarded with a number of free cheese samples! Yum! - Buy your eggs here if you aren't diligent enough to get to the farmers market early. You can also return your empty egg cartons for reuse which, as we all know, is better than recycling. :-) - Grassfed milk. Check! - Get your spices here. High turnover allows for the freshest dried spices available in the area. - I love Aztec Gold coffee! -They have fabulous little baskets that can either be carried around by hand or rolled on the ground behind you like a little dog on wheels toy (http://tinyurl.com/46o6blx) - Bring your own bag or buy one here if you don't already have one. I want to love my local natural foods store, but I just can't. They have a good bulk section and I like getting my eggs there if I can't get to the farmer's market but that's where it stops for me. A good portion of the ingredients they carry are essentially organic junk food. They carry next to nothing that could qualify has a healthy gluten-free snack aside from plain produce. Sometimes I just want to grab something that isn't raw nuts or a carrot. Everything they carry that is gluten free is full of sugar. I have to resort to ordering everything I need online at Thrive Market when I'd much rather support a local business. read more

Visited Eats today for the first time. I am a visitor to Blacksburg (home for Christmas with my family) from San Francisco. The selection was more than I expected, but the staff was marginally congenial at best...not very helpful. Meriel was the only one who tried to help me find what I needed. Overall, there was no charm, and the store missed a great opportunity to gain new clientele with my Dad and in-laws. Instead, my Dad is irritated he had to spend a lot of money on a very small amount of groceries...and those high prices coupled with poor customer service means Eats must be the only gig in town. I love this store. It's near my office, so I walk down all the time for a variety of things. Prices are a little high on some items, but to me it's worth it. My complaint is the "holier than thou" attitudes of the some of the staff. I feel like I'm being judged everytime I'm in there, because I'm usually in dress clothes and not tie dye and sandals. The older, tall man is the worst. Very rude. Im in there a lot, and he has yet to say one nice thing to me. Instead, he scolds the way I smell the essential oils. Doesn't even ask of I need help. Ever. The nicest person is the lady at the deli. She's awesome. There's a couple younger cashiers who I ALWAYS have to be the first one to initiate conversation with.
