Do not make the mistake of thinking that this means the station must be a masterpiece of eye-pleasing utilitarian style, however, as you will be disappointed! The station appears as an ugly, squat asymmetrical structure from Wood Lane, unlike the rich red, tiled creations which one more normally associates with the London Underground. Step inside though, and you will see why it won those awards. The station is bright, spacious and airy, with lots of glass and a high roof. It is also a member of a very exclusive London Underground club: it has public toilets for both sexes! It may not be situated in the most picturesque area of London, but the high frequency of trains and breezy interior make it a far better station to live or work near than many others on the network. One word of warning though, avoid attempting to top-up your Oyster here during the morning or evening peak, you will be waiting a long time for the two ticket machines or one operating ticket office window.

Mind you, I'm not all that sure if it is still used to the extent that it was used back in the day (such as Dr Who Episodes being filmed in the back halls). It is located in Fare Zone 2 and has step-free access. The location is good. It is in the White City area of London and is the main station for Westfield London It is located in White City and serves Westfield London and the BBC's former home of the Television Centre. The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium (Loftus Road) is also nearby. The station is fairly clean, it has a small Starbucks (take out only) at the ticket gates, and two lifts going to each platform. It is on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, between Latimer Road and Shepherd's Bush Market stations. Depending on where in London you are trying to wish, you may wish to connect into Hammersmith (around 5 minutes) and get onto the District line. Tower Hill, Kings Cross, Baker Street and Paddington are all served from here on the circle line though. 3* - Handy tube station if you're heading into Westfield, serves a useful feature but far from the best station on the network.

A once grim station, (stabbings, muggings etc) has been perked up with red and white paint and hanging baskets of red and white plstic flowers. Still freezing, and still with stairs that make your legs ache, but a nicer environment at least. Also, check out the classic music piped out at night, supposedly to keep the young thugs away... Best pub near the station is The Masons Arms (the only pub really...) and as it is slap bang whallop across the road from the Millennium hostel, the station is very popular with backpackers. Also one of the few nearby stations you can get to the Notting Hill Carnival from.

Willesden Junction is one of North London's main suburban rail hubs. The station itself - and…read moreindeed, its surroundings - are extraordinarily unprepossessing, surrounded as they are by miles of railway yards, industrial premises and major roads. But it's a really useful transport interchange, and set to get busier as the new London Overground services develop. The station has a complex history: the first station here was opened in 1866 on the original main line out of Euston. At the same time, a station was opened on the North London Line, which ran from the City to Richmond. In 1915 services began on the new suburban electric lines from Euston to Watford, which were also used by the Bakerloo Underground line. An electric service was also provided along the West London Line to Kensington High Street. The main line platforms were removed when outer suburban services ceased calling at Willesden in 1962. The West London line service had ceased in 1940, but recommenced in 1999. Today, there are four sets of services calling at the station: - Euston to Watford Junction (every 20 minutes) - Richmond to Stratford (North London Line - every 15 minutes) - Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction (every 30 minutes) - Elephant & Castle to Harrow & Wealdstone (Bakerloo - frequent) Except the Bakerloo line services, since 2007 the other lines have been operated by London Transport and branded as the 'London Overground'. Together, they knit together a wide range of destinations in North and West London, and provide a means to getting between them without going into central London. Plans are in the pipeline to increase the frequency of all services, and the number of trains running between Clapham Junction and Stratford via the North London Line - currently, this happens only at rush hour. Willesden Junction is effectively two separate stations, linked by a walkway and stairs (or a lift): the Bakerloo and Euston to Watford services use the lower station, which is well preserved with traditional wooden awnings. The North London and West London Line services to Clapham use the upper station, which has very short platforms, and modern but slightly tatty buildings. Both levels have small outlets selling hot drinks and snacks, and the station is now fully accessible, thanks to a network of elevated walkways and lifts. Expect big crowds here during rush hour with people changing from one to the other. There are also people who take the opportunity to switch if it's a District train and they want Circle or vice-versa. Stairs down to the ticket hall and then escalators to the Central or District/Circle line platforms, this station straddles both Travelcard Zones 1 and 2. TfL helpfully knows the difference and you will pay the lesser fare if you are traveling on an Oyster card. It doesn't really matter what you do, you're always going to exit the station on the wrong side of the road. So there's that. Kensington Gardens is nearby.

Just a quick trip on the tube will take you to Notting Hill. Well, maybe not that quick of a trip…read moredepending on where you're coming from, but it's not too far away. Notting Hill Gate is the perfect place to stop if you're visiting Notting Hill because it's right in the center of everything. There are many streets with colorful houses right nearby and lots of little cafes and restaurants to choose from.

We needed to transfer from our usual line to another to explore London a little more. When I walked into the station, I was drawn in by the massive curved canopy and the larger platform landings. This station was built in 1868 and can imagine what it looked like then. Many years before cars, people were commuting through London via underground rail. The place has history and it was cool to see, while you are on your way to see other places.

What finalized our decision was the close proximity from the London Marriott Kensington hotel to Earl's Court tube station. From the hotel shortcut to the tube station was 5-7 minutes as we pulled our 24 inch luggage. Pros: * 45 minutes from Earl's Court to Heathrow terminals 2 & 3 * easy payment system by tapping your contactless credit card at the turnstile * 2.10 English pounds meant $2.72 USD. That's a huge incentive to take the tube. Cons: * there should be more emphasis on the need to take the lift to the Piccadilly line located down on platform 6. There is a sign around the corner that says it's 83 steps assuming you want to take the stairs. Not with a 24 inch luggage you don't.

Above the platform, just below the streets is a secret world filled with eateries and places to grab a drink. A convenience store sits right outside the turnstile. Even though we didn't see a rubbish bin anywhere, the station was rather clean.
