Late review, this is for January's procedure. Upon arrival, I had came in the office early for my procedure. I was super nervous as this is my first colonoscopy appointment. I probably used the restroom 5 times and each time I was worried that I was called, in case they didn't see me in the waiting room. I waited about an hour after my initial appointment due to the fact that the patient before me had some medical issues that needed more attention and time. I was fine with waiting anyway since I didn't plan my day but to rest and hopefully the patient before me was okay. I had a great experience! Coming into the facility, I was scared and nervous for my first colonoscopy procedure but the nurses, anesthetists and Dr. Chard made the experience wonderful! After the procedure when I had gotten well rested, Dr. Chard came by and talk to me about the procedure and what else is next. It was a welcoming environment and I highly recommend this place! read more

Had my second colonoscopy there. Check-in was fine. Prep was fine. The place has a little bit of an assembly line feeling to it as there are lots of beds around in one big open room but fine. Procedure itself went fine. I told the doctor (Dr. Chard) right before I went under that at my first procedure (5 years earlier at another place) the doctor had given me the results within a few moments of me 'coming to' from the drugs and I didn't remember what they said. He said he wouldn't do that...then proceeded to do exactly that. I remember what he said this time but kind of minor annoyance. Here is the big reason for the 2 star review: something happened during my routine colonoscopy where they actually gave me an infection that turned into diverticulitis! I will explain. Many people have Diverticulosis (small pockets in the colon). Dr. Chard explained I had this when I came to. That's fine. It doesn't really mean anything. However 24 hours after my procedure ended I ended up getting massive abdominal cramps. Over the next 4 days they got worse and worse. I spoke with Dr. Chard and he said he didn't know what it was and recommended I go to the ER. 5 hours later after blood work and a CAT scan the ER doc said I had diverticulitis (which is an infection and inflammation). They called Dr. Chard to explain. He then called and left me a VM saying "This is very rare. It almost never happens. It's unlikely related to the colonoscopy. You'll be fine with antibiotics after a few days." Um, this was 1000% related to the colonoscopy (which is what the ER doc said). What, it's a simple coincidence that this happened within 24 hours of the procedure? That seems like a flat out lie to cover his butt (pardon the pun). In the end (another pun) the antibiotics did work and the infection cleared up. But it was a very terrible 6 days of pain and what will end up being a big ER bill. I won't be returning. read more

Five stars YES, but not perfect and I'll get to that. FIRST: Staff here are great. The front desk was personable and focused on me, then Elsie and shadowing Savannah were very efficient with a good explanation for what this and that were for. They kindly walked a heart note from me across the room to a young female in great distress post-op - hyper anxiety. Ti, my anesthesiologist, was caring and compassionate even asked me as I came out of it if I'd like a tad more (there was a good reason). Dr. Susie Cohen is the BEST! Liked her 3 years ago, and again today, a real pro with a long history of experience. Icing on the cake, my colonoscopy results were something to smile about. Now to the not so good part: the software program where patient history and notes are kept is clunky and needs replacing. Trying to update my records the night before was not fun. In conclusion: Use the East Bay Endo Surgery team, very chill vibe and clearly they know what they are doing. I highly recommend them. read more

I had two separate billing issues, office, and anesthesia. For the office I had overpaid and was due a refund. The refund hadn't been received. I made numerous calls, went to the office, and was finally contacted by accounting, who acknowledged the situation and determined the amount due after the refund. I paid and was told the account would be settled. Unfortunately, I continued to get bills for what was the refund amount due. I paid it just to make it stop. Then, months later, I received bills for anesthesia that hadn't been billed to insurance. Now, I must chase down insurance with an insurance company I am no longer covered by. So far, I have spent hours trying to deal with this, and likely hours more are still needed. read more

He reassured me I was in his capable hands during my procedure. Dr Chard is an excellent doctor with many years of practice. He helped me navigate thru my symptoms to my colonoscopy. I came here to say that their management is horrible. I came in for a colonoscopy with original appt for 2pm. The day of I got a call to ask if I can come in an hour early as the doctor was going faster. So I scrambled and changed my pick up person and other logistics and head over (getting done sooner was better). Now, I have sat in the waiting room for 1hr (almost at my original appointment)! I went to East Bay Endosurgery Center for a routine colonoscopy screening. My doc has his own Yelp page, so this is just for EBEC. The procedure went well, but EBEC was kind of hit and miss. The staff were pleasant, but their policies, procedures, and facilities were sometimes lacking. The appointment wasn't too far in the future, which was nice. But the process took 2 calls, which was annoying. They weren't willing to schedule until they received my primary's referral. But for someone's first screening at age 50, what are they expecting the referral to say? That I'm 50? How about just looking at my driver's license? Let's keep it moving, people. Interestingly, during my appointment check-in, they asked for the name of my primary. I even had to spell out his first and last names, because EBEC claimed he wasn't in their system. Not in the system? Didn't you block me for this all-important referral? Did my primary forget to write his name on it? Silly. The prep prescription and instructions went to my email as soon as the appointment was scheduled. That was all good. Also nice was the nurse who called me a couple days before to talk about the upcoming prep and procedure. Very helpful. Unfortunately, there seemed to be some gaps in discussing my options for sedation. The nurse said I had elected to be sedated, which I had not (I hadn't decided). And the nurse said the scheduling person should've discussed that with me. I'm skeptical that the scheduler is qualified to discuss risks/benefits of propofol, but whatever. Ultimately, the nurse talked to the doc and cleared me to go w/o sedation, but still the nurse seemed to focus on risks (ie, how uncomfortable the procedure would be). I don't feel like I ever really had a full discussion of the benefits (eg, safety) aside from my own perceived benefits of faster recovery and retaining memory of the procedure. The check-in procedure had a few bumps. I like to read things before I sign them, so it would've been helpful to get the paperwork ahead of time (since there was a lot). They _do_ have an online patient forms site, but I couldn't progress beyond the required submission of my SSN, which I refused. I didn't give it at check-in either, so obviously not a requirement. Worse, once I arrived, they had me use a little electronic pad for many of my signatures that... you know... didn't actually show the agreement I was agreeing to. How is this even legal? Granted, they gave me the printed form afterwards (w/ my signature). But I shouldn't be made to feel like a jerk for demanding to see the paperwork I'm signing _before_ I sign it. Instead, I got things like "Now you're signing for your colonoscopy." Um, call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure your informed consent is a bit more than 1 sentence. And sure enough, once I got the printed form, there's my signature saying I had read the previous 2 pages when I actually didn't--couldn't. And they wonder why their malpractice insurance is so expensive? Finally, I'm just about through check-in, and they tell me the scheduled doctor isn't available. I can either take a different doc or wait an additional hour (maybe). And of course, since I had to arrange for a friend to pick me up _in case_ I was sedated, waiting means pushing them out by an hour too. Not sure who was responsible for this delay, but I'm putting it on EBEC, since they're paid to manage the doctors' time. The facility itself was OK. Seemed clean and adequate for the procedure. One exception was the single toilet available to patients. Prep for colonoscopies is basically a 12-hour diarrhea session, so yes, you're going to need to use it while you're there; and it'd be nice if there was more than one for all patients to share. Worse, that one toilet had big signs prohibiting any paper from going into it (toilet paper, seat covers, etc). Apparently you're supposed to use the large trash can nearby? Gross. Come on folks, this isn't a gas station! You've got $10,000 endoscopes, but can't afford a good toilet? Silly. read more

My beloved maternal grandmother died from colon cancer. I went in for an age appropriate colonoscopy due to family history. Thank goodness I did, as some small polyps were removed. PSA - the procedure is a screening and potential treatment. The life you save will be your own. I am very impressed with the professionalism of the staff. I felt safe and cared for before and during my visit. Extensive outpatient notes were provided. An added bonus- I had the opportunity to experience propofol, the famed anesthesia of Michael Jackson. I had a procedure done here that was pre-authorized by my insurance. I called twice both to the surgery center and to the anesthesia Department to confirm that there was or was not a copay. I was told that I would be informed if there was a bill going to happen. So I had the procedure done. Now I'm facing over $1,000 of bills. I don't understand what I could have done ahead of time. They did not inform me of any co-pay that was going to be collected. The procedure went well. But the billing sucks. Do not go there unless you have it in writing. read more

It appears that this is part of the East Bay Center for Digestive Health because they are the ones that sent me the prep information on what to eat and what not to eat 3 days before the procedure and on the day of the procedure. First I had to register online with their website and download a 17 page medical information sheet and fax it to them before I could schedule an appointment. My procedure was scheduled here and once I got through all the paperwork and had the procedure scheduled, they sent me the prep information. On the day of the procedure, my ride dropped me off and from start to finish, I believe it took about 2 hours. I waited in the waiting room for a few minutes before they bring me inside. There a nurse, explained what I was to do. She also asked me questions on what and when I had anything to drink. I was brought into a room with several beds and each one had a curtain around it. I was asked to undress and wear a gown with the backside open. When she came back she inserted a saline solution into a vein in my hand. She told me to lay down and it would be about 20 minutes before I would go for the procedure. So the nurse told me to rest but it was a bit noisy in this big room with nurses asking other patients questions and hearing them move things around even though the curtains were drawn around the bed. They have a big rectangular pan to put all your belongings underneath the bed as there is a rack underneath the bed when they wheel you into the procedure room. They no longer use an IV for an anesthetic but use some kind of gas to inhale through your nostrils. Not a pleasant experience but one that makes you drowsy at the beginning of the procedure and you slowly awaken when they are almost completed. Let's just say I'm glad it's over. I wasn't too groggy afterwards as the anesthetic wears off faster than the IV version. All the medical staff were courteous and patient. Even Dr. Wu was nice but I don't remember too much after the anesthesia took effect. read more

I see Dr Vesga. Feel very comfortable with her and felt she wants to explore all possible issues/family history before recommending any medications or exams. Had a double scoping appointment, but due to certain health issues they were only able to do a colonoscopy exam. The anesthesiologist was not comfortable putting me completely under for the upper GI due to my pulse. This made me feel that they are very concerned that scopings proceed safely for the patient. The before and after care from the nurses was fantastic. I have to say that Ruby and Truc have great bedside manners to make you feel comfortable and try to make you less stressed/anxious if you are. We had some good laughs too. They went over and explained to findings report of the procedure. It is a bit factory style but I never felt rushed to get ready and get out. read more

Hello, (I apologize for writing this review so late. It can take me a long time to do things sometimes.) Dr. Schembre's Office is the exact and best to have a colonoscopy done. Everyone within their office were very nice, very efficient, and excellent to meet. Everything went precisely. I felt at peace while getting ready. The doctor who handled the gas to put me out was very cool. They had music in the background in the exam room. This was my first time experiencing a colonoscopy, and I thought to myself, if anything were to happen to me, I couldn't have asked for a better way to go out. (Iron Butterfly was playing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.) After the exam I felt great. It didn't take long to get up. I was asked to wait for a little bit. And I left feeling very happy to have experience my colonoscopy with Dr. Schembre's Office. It was a gift to have in Life. And along with my friend, who is a really great guy, and my big brother, having the best sandwich I have ever tasted. I thought to myself later, this was a good day, and I'm grateful. deja vu. i've been here before six years ago. today's journey began last year when i returned a stool sample to Quest Diagnostics. they detected blood, got letter noting the "positive" of a cancerous growth. suggested i see my doc. for advice. both my doc. and Dr. Wu. here both suggested i get an colonoscopy. thou Dr. Wu said there's was only a 10% chance of a cancerous growth, why take a chance? Kaching! i understood his reasoning. Did i feel lucky? today's procedure was done almost the same as last time. except only one polyp found and extracted. start to finish just over an hour. Dr. Wu didn't brief me afterwards as Dr. Chard did before. nothing surprising turned up. seems the blood came from hemorrhpoids not from the polyp. the staff here is sensitive, low key, friendly, professional and bilingual. suggested solution to hemorroids: eat more fibre, fibre will soften the stool and lessen the chances of hemoroids appearing. don't need to repeat for 5 to 10 years, depending on what turns up.... read more

A great healthcare experience for my first endoscopy and colonoscopy. East Bay Endosurgery Center has a nice facility. Dr. Wu, who performed my endo and colonoscopies was great. My anesthesiologist was very kind, and so was the medical tech/nurse who got me prepped. Excellent communications with me before, during, and after the procedures...EXCEPT for the receptionist on the day of the procedure who was talking loudly with her colleague about partying with friends. Everyone in the waiting area could hear her. Most patients have been fasting for a day or two, some are probably nervous, and I'll bet they want peace not quiet instead of a lot of inane babbling. She also demonstrated very weak interpersonal communications skills when she checked me in too, and didn't automatically tell me where the bathroom...kind of an essential thing to know :-) . read more

Oh my gosh, this was a really good experience! I picked the facility based on the Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. (Sorry, this is a little long...) The general overview is that pretty much everyone did their job and did it well. I have a health condition that makes communicating about anesthesia important, and I was hugely relieved when I got a call the week before from the anesthesiologist himself. I'd like to think I made their job easier by noting the condition multiple places on my forms and sending specific details for proposed protocol, but the end result was that the direct connection was made and I ended up feeling treated like a person rather than a number. The downsides to this independent clinic are: be prepared to fill out and fax or email about fifty thousand forms about privacy, insurance coverage, etc. (Okay, I'm exaggerating a little...) And lots of reminder calls. The upside is that they hustle you in and out of there (apparently they are often running behind, so be prepared for a wait, but on the day I went, things were running like clockwork). Apparently if you go to get it done at a hospital/major facility, you're there 2 extra hours when all is said and done! It's kind of neat that in this day and age a specialized clinic like this can survive separate from the Sutter Health behemoth. I think all they do is look inside people's guts, and they do it well. A special shout-out to the anesthesiologist Larry, who has 40 years' experience doing this but was also responsive to my ideas about what I know about my body (and gave me some good tips about the whole process!), and to the nurse who prepped me (oh, geez, have I forgotten her name already? Preet?). Doctor Neil Stollman was also as nice and warm as mentioned in the other reviews. Word is that he's gentle, too (apparently not all colonoscopy doctors are, since you're out cold and wouldn't know the difference until later!). I would recommend this clinic for anyone who has a special situation like Addison's Disease or hypopituitarism or a genetic cytochrome P450 variation (slow metabolizer or ultra-rapid metabolizer -- even without the genetic test, you may already know if you're super-sensitive or strangely insensitive to meds). My experience (trying to be respectful and collaborative) was that the anesthesiologist Larry worked with me on a plan and the whole team did their best to not let me go into shock, like is a more of a risk at a place where it's a big impersonal system and the system may lose track of your special needs. The only other downside I would say besides lots of forms (perhaps unavoidable) is the prep instructions they use. They use the version that says you're supposed to stop eating chunky/fibrous stuff 5 days before. Unless you're pretty constipated (in which case you'd better take some laxatives the day before), I can't imagine it taking that long to clean anyone out what with a day of fluids and then the emptying medicine the night/morning before. It seems like if you say such a long time, there's a risk of people not taking any of it as seriously. I ended up looking up Kaiser's instructions for the Gavilyte, of all things, as another perspective (it says 3 days before). Some tips for colonoscopy: If you're drinking broth the day before on the "clear liquids day" and are getting hungry, you're allowed to add some clear oil to it. Also, it turns out the prep stuff after that actually works if you do what they say (you're finished spewing by the time you get in the car to go to the appointment)-- amazing. Also, you don't have to use the prep stuff's flavor packet with saccharin and high-glycemic maltodextrin (you can get some lemon juice-- juicing them is a pulp problem, get the bottled kind with no pulp-- and use some stevia and/or erythritol -- or the combo can be bought as "Truvia"-- and sweeten to taste) to make gross lemonade instead of ultra-disgusting lemonade. I did this and apparently everything still looked clean. Wear warm socks day-of if you get cold easily, and you can even bring a cap/soft hat. And finally, a tip for night owls from my dad, who at 78 is a pro at this by now: if you can get an afternoon appointment, you can sleep in until 8 instead of getting up at 4 or 5 AM to take the rest of the fluid. My mother in law recently had a colonoscopy here and every single staff member that we interacted with was super kind and helpful. The check in experience was quick since we filled out the forms online. The intake nurse spoke Cantonese and was super helpful in communicating with my MIL since she doesn't speak English. The prep nurse, Alan was a pro and ensured that he got the IV in in one attempt. All of the staff were really kind that day and made the experience really smooth. read more

I got charged for out of network Anesthesiology for a colonoscopy by a nurse. I have Anthem insurance with an excellent network, so it shouldn't be so hard to staff the center with Anesthesiology nurses that take my insurance. I think it's the responsibility of a surgery center to make sure that the people who treat you while you are unconscious are in network. The center wanted to charge me $250 up front to pay for anesthesiology just in case my insurance didn't pay, so I think they knew exactly what they were doing. My insurance pays for anesthesiology for colonoscopies, so it's an absolute scam that they bring in an out of network nurse. read more

I er... never reviewed a Dr. or place where I got a 'procedure' performed, but I had such a completely positive experience... that it would be unforgivable to not give kudos to everyone involved. Nice facility (part of, or works with East Bay Center for Digestive Health)... and everyone... yes everyone was as pleasant and on-top-of-it as they could be. Dr. Villagomez is great and thorough and all her assistants were first rate. They all made me feel so comfortable and cared-for. Had a 7:20a colonoscopy. After surviving the pre-op prep the day before, the procedure itself was a snap. Got dropped off in their passenger loading zone on 16th Street, the Rotunda is open at 7a, so entry was easy. I hung out for a bit and they let us in a few minutes early. Don't worry about being in line to check in first since it appears they do only one colonoscopy at a time. The staff was really great, friendly, and informative. Very modern, clean and professional. You forget you're in an commercial office building, not a medical center. I was sort of awake for some of the procedure but very comfortable. Didn't really interact with the doctor. The only very mild discomfort was at the very end of the procedure (pun not intended). Didn't feel that groggy when they let me go, but they escorted me out to the same loading zone on 16th after they called my ride to let them know i was ready for pick up. They give you a copy of the report and it includes small photos of your insides for your family album. read more

While the doctor's associated with the Center may be fine the pre-colonoscopy support is not good. The prep instructions about what to eat, when and medication instructions are minimal and don't address all the necessary questions. They also do not specify which medications should or should not be taken prior to the procedure. I called and left three messages for the person assigned as my coordinator and she did not return one single call. I called the general Center number hoping someone would know enough to answer whether I should discontinue or continue what is a common medication I take prior to the procedure. First, she asked the brand name of the medication which I told her. She then back tracked and said I'd have to consult with my physician. I would think the physician at the Center doing the procedure would have some protocol about medications that should be discontinued and that information should be communicated to the patient. All the medical information has to be submitted in written form well in advance of the procedure so someone at the Center should look at the info and know what adjustments, if any, need to happen pre-procedure. I'm going to go through with the procedure but my confidence in whether I will be treated professionally is minimal. read more

I've had two colonoscopies here in the last two years. Dr. Ng did the procedure both times. Seriously, 5 stars to every person I interacted with. Here's how it went: Laxative Part 1 complete by 8 pm the night before. Laxative Part 2 complete by 8 am the morning of. I met at the East Bay Endosurgery Center at my scheduled time, and sat in the waiting room for about 5 minutes. My anesthesiologist (Name might be Larry?) came n got me from the front room. I was led to a curtained off area and was told that they'd be giving me something that was pleasant and easy to wake up from, and in comes Sarah. Sarah and I do a double take and realize that we'd done this about a year ago. Sarah leaves with instructions to disrobe entirely. I do so. Sarah goes through the usual list of questions and we joke around. Then she puts an IV in my arm. Larry and Sarah roll me into the room where the colonoscopy will take place. Dr. Ng comes in, says hi and asks if I have any questions. As Larry gives me the anesthesia, he asks me "If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?" My dreams were pretty pleasant in Peru. I'm wheeled into the room I was prepped in... I wanted a hug, so I asked Larry. He chuckled and gave me a hug. Larry, Sarah, and Dr. Ng were terrific. My next checkup is in two years, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. read more

I had both of my colonoscopies here and both times I had excellent care from the friendly, professional and caring staff. From Dr. Darby to the nurses I always felt I was in good hands. The 4 star rating is only because of the front office staff. The young lady who greeted me was very unfriendly, cold and kept cutting me off when I asked questions. I feel that when anyone is entering an office the person behind the desk should greet you with a smile. read more

This medical facility did not provide me the best follow-up care after a colonoscopy procedure on 1/10/2019...especially Dr. Darby...to this day I have not received a call from him nor any staff member... after many phone calls to Dr. Darby, from the 2nd week after my procedure describing a serious condition that I was having instead of him requesting me to come to the office I was repeatedly told to take imodium...thereafter Dr. Darby prescribed a solution to take...the very next day I had to go to ER...because of a twisted colon after my colonoscopy on 2/2/2019 I had to undergo emergency surgery...the only communication from East Bay Endosurgery is an invoice for the use of its facility...I will no longer have my colonoscopy procedure performed by its staff! read more

My experience could not have been better! The staff was kind and competent from the receptionist, nurses, to Dr. Villagomez. EVERYONE was so-o responsive and friendly. The IV nurse was VERY competent...got the IV in on the first try and it didn't hurt!! I felt so well cared for...and also want to mention that the instructions they sent before the procedure were very clear. I did have some questions about meds and food for the days before the procedure and I just called and had them all answered promptly. I do want to give a special shout out to Angela who was my coordinator weeks before the procedure. She is lovely and responsive!! I also liked that the info given to me post procedure was VERY informative, with photos and good explanations. I can't say enough about how this great staff. High praise for all!! read more

This was my "rite of passage" first colonoscopy and every aspect of it was handled professionally and with a caring spirit. Sarah and Kim, the nurses who prepped me and did post-op, were very kind, skilled and caring, and Becky, in charge of anesthesia, was also terrific. Out like a light (Propofol is pretty amazing), woke up about 40 minutes later with everything done. Dr. Wu is friendly, has a great sense of humor, and super-competent. I had had to reschedule a couple of times -- that was handled easily. And they made sure my pickup knew where to go and when to be there. All in all, a very good experience. read more

Second time around for both endoscopy & colonoscopy. Dr. Stollman (hope he's not accepting any more new patients!) could not be a better person or physician for the job. I have such difficulties with the prep that it's one of the few times I've ever called off hours & the on-call doctors could not have been nicer or more sympathetic. This time head nurse Sarah fielded an early morning call, & then later at the center nurse anesthetist Larry & crew were so kind & warm. They all, including Dr. Stollman, made the process "easy." read more

Exceptionally rude staff. I arrived at 6:20am - 10 minutes before I was told to arrive. I waited outside, of course, because the door was locked and the lights were off. At 6:28am, a female employee arrived, pushed right past me, opened the door and went inside and completely ignored my "Hello?". The door was still closed and locked at 6:35am, so I looked through the window and saw her sitting at her desk. I knocked - no response. 6:40am - door still locked. I have advised my MD that he needs to use a different facility. read more

I had to go here for an endoscopy. I was told to arrive at 11:30. I arrived at 11:15 just to be on the safe side. After waiting 30 minutes in the lobby, the receptionist told me that they have patients (and thier rides) show up an HOUR before thier scheduled procedure. This is very rude for patients and thier mandatory rides home. The waiting room was small, and was standing room only on the day I was there. I feel the doc (Hargrave) used WAY too much sedation for the procedure. (6mg Versed 100 of Demeral, and 50IV of Benedryl). They do not use CRNA's for sedation, which is why Propofol isn't an option. I slept for 18 hours at home, overkill if you ask me. Because you are so sedated, they do not review the report with you, rather, they give you the printout of the pics, and any new priscriptions. The facility was safe, but it really seems like a GI factory. The overuse of old school dangerous drugs is concerning, and the obnoxious requirement to arrive one hour before they even take you back is not okay. I will not be using thier services again. read more

This morning I had a colonoscopy at the East Bay Endosurgery Center. Everyone (from front office to nurses, to the doctor) I dealt with during this entire process (from the initial consult through the procedure today) were friendly, helpful, and professional. In particular, I would like to mention Dr. Vesca (who performed the procedure) (from the East Bay Center for Digestive Health), the nurse Cindy that prepped me this morning, and Raji the nurse anesthesiologist - all of whom took especially good care of me. I will definitely continue as a patient of Dr. Vesca's, and will highly recommend her and the surgery center and digestive health practice to my family and friends. read more
