Dr Waters and this practice saved our 5 year old Shepherd mix, Luna's life via a rapid and thorough diagnosis of Large T Cell hyper calcemic Lymphoma (Sorry if I am messing that up. Within 12 hours of their suspicions based on great clinical work done by them Luna was referred to an amazing Veterinary Oncology practice where she started treatments the next day. Luna is still very sick, but she is sick and alive; Doing really well, even if guarded. IF it had not been for the amazing work Dr Waters and everyone at East Bay had done it is likely Luna would be dead or shortly would be. We have what I hope will be a long journey with some good time ahead for Luna, but we would absolutely not be in this place to have this consideration if not for Dr. Waters and East Bay. read more

I can not say enough good things about East Bay Veterinary Hospital. Growing up our pups went to a not so good place and finally we smartened up back in 2015. Dr. Selmonsky and Dr. Maltese have now cared for 4 of our golden retrievers and 1 orange tabby cat. When our eldest golden was extremely sick (he was over 12) Dr. Selmonsky gently and kindly guided my parents through the pro's of extending his life and next steps. In the end, we couldn't save our boy but we appreciated the kindness and bedside manner you would hope to obtain from a vet. We now have 1 older golden and 2 babies who are 8 months old. Both vets are GREAT with the boys. The puppies have had good check-ups every time and are always happy to go in and say hi to everyone :) Most recently our cat, Ricky became ill and it was an emotional roller coaster. Dr. Selmonsky guided us through all the steps and surgery and was extremely honest with us throughout the process. Thankfully, our little guy had a successful tumor/blockage removal and now is back to his normal shape. We honestly could not have gotten through it without the vets kindness, constant updates and thoroughness when speaking with us. The dr. even called us at night which made us feel comfy that our kitty was in good hands (he had to say for 4 days which is a lot!) Enough said, this is where you should take your fur babies. I will be finding a new vet. This was the first time I took my cat to this vet clinic. She was very itchy and I wanted to see if she had allergies or something bigger. I was quickly told she had fleas. I asked the vet if she saw any fleas and she said she didn't, but that was because the cat was moving too much. I was given an antibiotic (for what i don't know), a steroid shot, and then a flea treatment. It's almost a week later and my cat is still very itchy and irritated. And i have not found any evidence of fleas. Today I got a second opinion. I also had my cat professionally bathed. It was determined that we do not have fleas. I have been freaking out all week trying to bomb my house and help get relief for my cat and prevent infestation. When in fact, we don't have any. My cat has dry skin symptoms, which can be treated with fish oil supplements and spot treatments that will ease her skin irritations. The front desk staff and people that saw me were very nice, they get stars for that. But I was misdiagnosed and overcharged very quickly and at the end of the visit I felt rushed. I will have to find a new vet. read more

As a ferret owner, it took me a while to find a vet I like. Dr. Selmonsky is absolutely the friendliest and best vet on the island and he is ferret friendly! Like most ferrets as they get older, Baby was suffering from low blood sugar and tumors and under Dr. Selmonsky and team he underwent two surgeries--one with the intent of removing tumors, and the other was initially for a dental cleaning (but another external tumor was found and removed). My ferret is now a spoiled 6 years old and doing fine. I also have 2 cats, 1 which was given to me as a kitten by Dr. Selmonsky because he saw me looking at him in the waiting room. The staff even gave me a carrier to borrow to take Mikey home. All in all the staff is super friendly and helpful, and it's great to finally find a vet for all my pet needs. read more

It was 11 years ago when we adopted Shadow from East Bay Veterinary Hospital during a visit with a friend and her dog. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have our dog Shadow treated here. Although he is a large dog with severe arthritis he is still doing very well at almost fifteen years of age. We know this is because of the competent and caring physicians, Dr. Gary Selmonsky and Dr. Amanda Maltese, and the fabulous staff. Everyone is so kind, helpful, concerned and accommodating. When a pet is sick it is very emotional for the owners. Both Dr. Selmonsky and Dr. Maltese were excellent at clearly explaining everything in terms we could understand and helping us get through difficult times. They are patient with us and always make us feel better before we leave. The nicest vet staff around! We recently switched to this office for our pup after about 8 months at another vet. Here at East Bay, everyone from the doctors to receptionists to the techs are so kind and nice! Our dog Oliver is currently there staying for a eye injury that resulted in a cone around his head. He is staying there so they can tend to his eyes with eyedrops and take care of him in a way that we could not at home. They did not even hesitate to offer this help when we explained that we were having trouble getting his drops into his eyes. When I went to drop off his medication, they immediately asked me if I wanted to visit with him, set us up in a room together and let us have as long as we needed. Oliver is not very trusting of strangers, but has a connection with them and immediately allowed them to pick him up and hold him, which is a big deal for him. Simply put - They don't get better than Dr. Selmonsky from a medical perspective and a table side manner. He does what has to be done, and also does not do what does not have to be done. While providing excellent care for our dogs over the past 15 years he never "ran the meter" on us and our dogs could not be in better hands. I needed to have an echocardiogram done for my dog and I called numerous places on Memorial Day and actually spoke to Dr, Semonsky who answered the call. He arranged to get me in the next evening. What a nice, caring man. He truly loves animals and it is not in the business just for the money. His staff is really thorough also. I needed to have my results sent to my usual vet and it was done immediately the next morning. When the fax didn't go through right away Joy called me immediately to let me know. She said she researched to find out if the fax number was correct and it was. I was taken back that she was so thorough and caring. If my vet moves on from the current practice I would definitely come back here. Great service and wonderful people. read more

**RIPOFF ALERT - BEWARE** First off I'm going to start by saying the staff was nice and seemed knowledgable. This is why I didn't leave 1 star. When my fiancé and I purchased our Yorkie, we were also recommended this vet, like a previous reviewer. We took him there a couple times and everything seemed great. We went to get him neutered and they pointed out this would be the best time to have his last two baby teeth removed. His top two adult canine teeth came in and the baby teeth hadn't fallen out (which I've now read is fairly common in smaller breeds). The vet wanted an additional $500-$600 to remove the two baby teeth, in addition to what we were paying to have him neutered. My fiancé and I couldn't afford that at that time and had to pass. I thought this sounded very expensive, so I looked into it. I have a high school friend who's family owns a vet and she works there (unfortunately, too far away from us). She informed me that while a dog is under anesthesia to be neutered, getting teeth pulled should cost between $30-$50 a tooth. The anesthesia is what's expensive and that's already paid for while he's being neutered. Like I said, they seem really nice here. Just be careful, apparently they will over charge you when they can! read more

I am writing a review because my Shih tsu Died a week before her 5th Birthday. I believe her death was the negligence of Dr. Maltese. Here's the story without exaggeration. I brought my dog in for an ear infection on Monday September 11th. She had crust in her ear & wanted her to be checked out. Dr. Maltese put medicine in her ear & said to me she's due for an allergy shot so we should just give it to her while your here. I said fine. Carly was an allergic dog. She even got an allergic reaction to routine shots in May that she never did before. Dr. Maltese said bring her back next Monday & I will put more medicine in her ear. Carly was great, playing, licking & lovable. That evening she woke us up crying. We thought her ear was bothering her. I called Dr. Maltese at 5:45 AM she did not call me back. I decided at 7:00AM to bring Carly right over to the Vet because I wanted to know why she was crying. Something obviously was wrong. Dr. Maltese came in, examined her & when she touched her where she gave her the shot Carly cried. She was swollen at the injection site. So Dr. Maltese said why don't you leave her here, we will run tests & see why she's in pain & was crying during the night. Of course, I said fine. Dr. Maltese called me mid morning & said she did a blood test & her sugar was high, that they would be rechecking that. She then called me to pick Carly up at 4pm, she said she did NOT find out why she was in pain & that she was given an opiate & an anti inflammatory . I took Carly home..she was so medicated she couldn't even walk. She laid with my husband. She wasn't not eating or drinking. Later that evening when the medicine was wearing off, she started crying again. I called Dr. Maltese immediately & she asked me if I had a xannex which I did not or a benedryl which I did. She told me to give her 1/4 of it and she.d see me at 8AM to recheck Carly's sugar. She said if her sugar was still high she.d have to start insulin right away. My husband & I gave her the benedryl. I woke up in the morning to find my Carly passed away. I was frantic as you couldn't only imagine. All I could think of was that I left Carly with Dr. Maltese for 8 HOURS on Tuesday to find out WHY MY DOG WAS CRYING IN PAIN. All she did was blood tests...NO X-RAY to find out where the pain was coming from! I wish to dear god I would of took her directly to the hospital! Oh but my Vet I thought was also a hospital! If I did not leave Carly there for 8 hours, I would NOT feel the way I do. Then we bring Carly in & Dr. Maltese of course is at a loss for words , I'm hysterical. She said the drug company offered to pay for the Necropsy. Maybe she was allergic to the allergy shot & that did something??? She did cry when she touch that swollen spot!!! Idk. She said it would take a week or two. She called me after a week & said the Necropsy found that Carly's intestine twisted, that it was usually found in BIG DOGS...Carly was 6lbs, 8 0z. That it was rare...that she had no symptoms . I'm like, this makes NO SENSE. I then said " when I left her with you, and if YOU did an X-ray wouldn't you have seen this!!!! I'm outraged. She said she showed no signs of Gastro problems, ...I'm like I left her with YOU for 8 hours for YOU to find out WHY!!! I'm sorry but everyone that hears this story says the same thing " somebody is covering something up, nobody wants to be responsible! And when I said to her I brought Carly in for an ear infection..,almost $600 later for Monday & Tuesday & 48 hours later she died, she responded "it's not related" She took no responsibility ! I cannot bring my little love back but I can tell you do NOT go to this Vet. If she would have done tests to find out why Carly was crying all night before they medicated her maybe she.d still be here. I swear to you she was fine before she got the reaction the the allergy shot! Dr. Maltese can feel bad & say whatever she needs to make herself feel better but because of her negligence my dog died and this family is devastated! I always use Dr. Semonsky however he was away in Paris read more

My 4lb pup had eaten a grape. Animal poison control said to take him to a vet to induce vomiting in an effort to get the grape out. I drive from Valley Stream to Merrick just to take my dogs to this vet.....I must pass about 10 other vets before I get to this one! This is the only vet we will take our 2 dogs to. Dr. Maltese is the nicest vet we have ever met. She takes the time to calm our dogs down and they love her. After my one dog received a vaccination he had an allergic reaction in the reception area where he pretty much passed out....Dr. Maltese ran from the back, scooped him up, and took amazing care of him. This facility was recommended to us by the store that we purchased our puppy from and we could not be happier! The staff is always friendly and very accommodating in an emergency. During the off hours when you call with an emergency one of the 2 vets calls you back with in 5 minutes! They are always pleasant even when they are waking up on a weekend to answer your emergency call. Zoey is never anxious when we come here and always leaves a happy puppy. My family has brought all four dogs we have owned to this facility. I cannot say enough great things. When it came time that my golden retriever needed to be put down due to cancer, Dr. Maltese mourned and grieved with us. Every employee is so sweet, even the secretary's. You can tell that everyone there genuinely loves their jobs and the animals they help. Dr.S has always been able to squeeze my dogs in upon an emergency. EDIT: I AM not disgusted by East Bay in general, I am disgusted by the female doctor and her careless instructions. Because of her I will probably never return. I am disgusted by this place. My mini poodle has been scooting about once or twice a day for the past few months or so. About a month or two ago I brought her in to check it out. The doctor said it was probably her anal glands so they drained them for us. We come home and she continues scooting. Fast forward to a few days ago when I brought her in to get updated shots and a general check up. I ask the doctor about the scooting and she says it could either be the anal glands still or something involving her vulva (what I gathered from her was that it had an extra fold which may cause irritation). Sure enough, there was some urine matter matted in my dog's hair on her vulva. At this point the doctor informs me that the hair must be cleaned or cut out and to prevent it, we just had to make sure that the dog was dry in that area, especially after using the bathroom. The nurse takes the dog in the back to clean it and we leave on our merry way. When we get home and I put my dog down, she throws herself on the floor and begins scooting like a maniac. I pick her up and her vagina is completely red with shaver burn and they shaved it completely. My dog is now completely irritated and red. My number one concern was the comfort of my dog and making sure she would stop the scooting to let her wound heal. My second concern was the fact that the fur easily could've been cut out with a scissor, why would they decide a route that would put my dog in pain?? And yes I know you're saying they couldn't have possibly know that she would get clipper burn, but this is not her back or stomach, it is her vagina, an area known to be sensitive in all creatures! I contacted the office again and I was offered a steroid( which I of course had to pay $30 for) and was told by the doctor that she would give the nurse the same instructions again if she was in the situation. The steroids have done no good for my pup and she is in immense discomfort and I am scared to leave her alone because I fear her scooting will irritate her more. I have put in thousands of dollars towards the care of my dog at east bay vet and I find it completely disgusting they would be so rough on an area of sensitivity. Watching my baby in complete discomfort angers me beyond no extent. I will not be giving them my business again due to this one careless doctor's instruction, which is also a shame to me since I love most of the staff and the Pampered Paws groomer that is connected with the hospital. My poor pup has to suffer because of the stupidity of others. read more

Love, Love, Love the staff and Dr. Maltese. We have 2 Teddy Bear's that we purchased and took them to East Bay for the first time. We have been going back ever since. Our Rocky & Micky receive the best medical care, love, and nurturing as if they were home with our family. We have also used the grooming services and our boys come home looking very handsome. As well, we board the boys with East Bay and they love being there and the perks of receiving photo's with text of the boys, special Zorn Chicken dinners, baths before coming home, and oh the spoiling they receive with tons of snuggles, and cuddles. Just started using the doggie daycare and when the boys see us pull in the parking lot they jump out of the car and can't wait to get through the door for playtime with their doggie friends. The tech staff is incredible with the interaction they provide to our boys and when the boys see who is bringing them to the back they jump in their arms and give tons of kisses. Rocky & Micky love the front office girls that have gone out of their way to get to know the boys. Best Place ever, and most important when we bring them there, we can do what we need to do and never worry about the boys. How great is it to have a Vet Hospital that your babies run through the door instead of refusing to get out of the car because they are afraid. Our boys love going to see Dr. Maltese :0) So........if you are seeking a place to take your furever friend I would most definitely take them to East Bay. read more
