All trims on this costume from East Coast Trimming, including flowers. Donna brilliantly recommended the burgundy braid.

I was about to have a nervous breakdown trying to finding some basic 1.5" white pleated lace for a costume. That may sound dramatic, but if you've shopped for trimming in the garment district you know it's PAINFUL. Trim shops close earlier than the everything else and they are woefully disorganized. Often what you need is out of reach, arbitrarily priced and you're invisible to the staff. East Coast Trimming is like divine intervention in the garment district. Not only will you find the most comprehensive selection AND the best prices, it's a superior shopping experience. By far the most organized trim store in the land. They even took a serious, sincere interest in my project. Which brings me to Donna. Donna, Donna Donna. She listened patiently to my plans and pulled trims I never would have thought of - I credit her with elevating my overall design. She stayed open late to help me and even found multiple boards of vintage buttons that were in storage downstairs - I NEVER would have found anything like them elsewhere. So creative, thoughtful and patient. Do yourself a favor and check out East Coast Trimmings before you bother with anywhere else.

"Button, Button, who's got the Button?" Success! I have been scouring the Garment District and it's 1,000s of fabric and trim stores to find two replacement buttons on a favourite bag of mine. They were a very specific type of button that actually had two pieces that screwed into one another. After almost giving up hope, I literally while on the phone found myself standing outside of East Coast Trimming. Already assuming I would be disappointed again, something told me "ah what the hey, what do you have to lose?" Blown away by how ridiculously organized this place is, I was quickly greeted by a staff member. I showed her the 'specialty button' and without hesitation she was off. Seconds later she came back with the exact one. She even brought another shade of the metal to make sure we had the exact fit. $3 dollars later I was out the door with a big smile. Thanks ECT! i would start here before wasting my time in an overly crowded and overly priced fabric/trim store.

Came here the last night to get a feel for the place and then back again today to add additions to my Kentucky derby hats. The people that work here are fantastic. So creative, helpful and patient with me while we tried on different trims, feathers and embellishments. They have an amazing selection of ribbons, bows, trimming, buttons, you name it. Very affordable, and best of all AMAZING customer service. I will def come back here for all my trimming needs.

This place is like my grandma's sewing box on steroids and deserves a 5+ haiku! my ribbon romance sparkle shine glint and glimmer cascading silk lace i had though i found a great place on yelp... only to walk to the store and promptly walk out. feeling rather dejected and cursing myself for having such high expectations in finding the perfect blue ribbon hue... i took another chance and ventured to a second spot i found yelp: east coast trimmings. gosh! all those wise people were right to say that life rewards those who persevere! walking into East Coast Trimmings felt like walking into the fabric store equivalent of an upscale european spa. Not only was the customer service polite and knowledgable... they were also full of spunk and personality. I would have totally befriended them and asked them to coffee if this had been some social meetup event. I watched how effortlessly they adapted their salesmanship according to the distinct and different personalities that drifted into the store. I came in collecting ribbons for a photo shoot but plan to go back and fetch fun frills for my future flapper costume! They seem to have a lot of unique fabrics and beaded things and lacy stuff... along with a great selection of silk ribbon colors. Check them out, I bet you will find more than you ever thought you desired!

    The most beautiful trim!

They have the most beautiful trim, but their prices are quite high and I have had several unpleasant experiences with the people that work there. Sometimes they are helpful and friendly, but other times the staff has been unreasonably rude and unwilling to give me the time of day. Apart from that, the store is a very dreamy place. They sell beautiful trims, especially bridal trim with rhinestones and lace. It's always organized meticulously by color with not a stray thread out of place. There's a very small button selection, but that's not what they specialize in. They have a wide selection of beautiful, silk flowers in all shades and colors. I always love to look around inside!

After wandering a few other trim and notion stores, I found East Coast Trimming and am so glad I did! Not only was the store beautifully laid out, everyone was incredibly helpful, and allowed me to peruse and helped me match ribbon and trim. Would highly recommend visiting this store when you need high quality materials.

This is a recently opened store. I bought ribbons and buttons. I will return. They have a large variety of sewing items, bias tape, thread.

East Coast Trimming is such a gem among the many stores in the garment district. My fiancé and I came across the store while searching for ribbon for our wedding invitations and immediately were taken by their collection of hand-dyed silk ribbons. They are BEAUTIFUL! Donna, the owner, is incredibly sweet and helpful and spent a great deal of time helping us bring our vision to fruition. She has incredible taste and the whole store is a testament to that. We have already been back since, this time looking for trims for our wedding dress sashes, and had an equally amazing experience.

The applique East Coast trimming helped me find looked beautiful on my wedding gown!

I've shopped at M&J for decades for sewing supplies: Ribbon, buttons, various closings (hooks &…read moreeyes and the like) trimming, stitch-on images, rhinestones and the like since the 1970s. My grandma--born in 1899--taught me to sew. She was a businesswoman; she and my grandfather owned a bar. He was the face and she handled the books. Stopped in last week and plan to make one more visit before they close. I'm not averse to buying online, but the great thing about shopping at M&J is that you just might find something you weren't expecting but realize you could put to good use. So yes, I think one last trip down there is in order. I shop online regularly and I'm pretty saavy when it comes to finding the things I need, but when it involves fabric and and other sewing materials there's nothing like finding something you had no idea you wanted/needed... including things for which you can't think of an immediate need but you just know might be useful in the future. M&J is a holdover from times when people bought clothing expecting it to last and assumed that they were going to keep it as long as it could be repaired, altered or hemmed up, not toss it within a year or two. And when clothing wore out, we saved the butons or other closings because hey--might need them one day--along with undamged fabric parts because hey, you might need them someday to patch or create something. I will miss M&J so very much because nothing beats seeing--and touching--sewing materials IRL.

M&J is one of those garment district institutions that's been around for nearly 90 years. They've…read morealways been one of the larger stores with a very broad assortment of sewing and design accessories--everything from hundreds of ribbons (may thousands), trims, decals, rhinestones, fabrics, supportive inner garment materials, buttons, hair/costume jewelry components, the list goes on. Agree with some other reviews in that it's one of the pricier stores though you pay for the wide variety--hard to beat their selection. The course of time hasn't been kind to local production. Back in the 1820s up until the early 1980s, when mass garment production stateside was booming in NYC, the garment district employed up to 46% of the city's industrial workforce. There was a need to design and purchase materials nearby, and the majority of Manhattan's midtown west side was dedicated to factories and design studios. Fast fwd to now, that statistic is much different and given the availability of online and global sources, not everyone needs to go into a physical store to purchase their needs. While many products have long moved to overseas sourcing, for anyone who's endeavored DIY arts and crafts, or even made any functional product by hand, it's much different seeing and feeling a material in person than on a screen. That's where in this past century, stores like M&J played a vital role in the fabric of the garment district. They are also a valuable resource to the numerous design students at FIT, Parsons, etc. During past decade many a longtime stalwart trim store have disappeared from the neighborhood and M&J is the latest casualty. If you are interested in sewing or design notions, now's your chance to pick up items at their going-out-of-business sale.

Omg-I was honestly in heaven here!! Ever since I first saw this particular fabric store on project…read morerunway I've always wanted to go and grace their I aisles !! I can't believe it's literally three floors and row after row of fabric on every type of role there could be possible, trim, glitter, tool, leather, and vegan leather! Then don't even get me started on all the thread, buttons, and home decor! It's enough to make your head spin!! Everything is incredibly organized by section, textures and style of patterns or solids! I was thoroughly impressed and yet so overwhelmed. I spent 45 minutes, just looking at every fabric and touching everything in sight that I couldn't buy a single yard of anything!! There's a cutting station in a couple of different spot spots as well as stairs and an elevator in case you need to maneuver around, but goodness! I could live here and never get tired!! Now that I think about it, I never looked at the prices but one of the fabrics was $24 a yard. It was a soft jersey fabric, so I'm sure it was more expensive. I should've looked up more prices, but honestly, I was just so overwhelmed, and I wanted to walk through each aisle away! There were a number of employees on each floor, helping other people and restocking other fabrics. I didn't want to bother with asking any questions because I was so enchanted with the fabric store itself! I'm so happy to have graced mood fabrics presence in New York, especially since all the fabrics have gone out of business over here on the West Coast in California! I honestly cannot wait to go back and actually buy some fabric! Lol I will definitely be working on some sketches for a dress or something so I can go in to mood fabrics with a game plan besides being overwhelmed by everything! lol
