They also have a seafood and butcher dept. It is in the small plaza so there is other shops/restaurants there and a parking lot that is often packed, so be patient. But I highly recommend it. I went there last Sunday and saw crackers was on sale, I bought some and found out later that they were expired like a month already. All I need to say is Hopia Baboy... They have 2 different kinds and the one not from Christine's that are smaller are AMAZING! So tasty! This is my favorite flavor of Hopia and they have this right up by the counter. Along with their other Filipino grocery specialties, I highly recommend any one that wants to make an authentic Filipino meal. They have everything from Champorado to green jelly to longuanisa! Pretty small market but friendly staff. I just wish they had more, especially in the fresh produce. The parking situation is horrible too. I waited almost 5 minutes in my car waiting for someone to pull out. I wonder how long I would have to wait on a busy day... It's pretty close to me, but the parking deters me from going here. There's like only a few spots, I would say like about 10... On the other and staff was friendly in helping me find stuff. They have a good selection of can and frozen items. read more

I visited this store and did not purchase anything. But it gave me a chance to see this place as my neighbor told me about this Asian grocery store. I think in general this store serves the neighborhood for the Asian grocery needs. I did not buy anything because I planned on buying vegetable. But the selection was very limited. It might be the timing of my visit. I will go back whenever I am in the neighborhood. By the way, parking is very limited also. read more

Who woulda thunk I go to New Jersey and feel like I'm back in..... Daly City! So many effin' Filipinos, it's great! This grocery store is connected to a fish market, and nextdoor to the East West Restaurant. It is housed in the East West Plaza, which includes the East West Laundromat. They carry fresh chicken empanadas, which earned them a 4th star. The bride and I went here for a quick errand to buy polvoron (pressed sweet wheat flour snacks) to put in the gift-giveaways for the wedding. They were amply stocked with the polvoron and all kinds of goodies you would expect in a Filipino market. Yes, they have suman (sweet sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf) too! read more

This is a great market for Asian goods and certain foods. My favorite items here are the pastries and sweets. If you love Philippine Kutsinta, they sell some of the best here...their inventory seems a bit inconsistent, but I usually like all the items purchased here. read more

Coming from California, I'm used to seeing Asian markets everywhere, be it a small Asian market on the corner or a fully blown Asian version of Walmart (99 Ranch, Lions, Seafood City, Island Pacific, etc.) in a major plaza. The fact that East West Market is really the main (and maybe only) Asian market within a 25 mile radius is good for them, but a bit stressful for customers. Parking: Terrible, period. There's maybe 25 spots shared among 6-8 establishments. It's nuts here. Be aggressive when waiting for a spot. Some people will try and take it if you aren't paying attention. Products: Solid. EWM mostly carries common Chinese and Filipino products, with a few Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai, and Vietnamese items available as well. An entire section of the store is devoted to the seafood and vegetables, while the rest of the market is reserved for the dry ingredients, baked goods, drinks, and kitchenware. There were only 2 cash registers open when I was here so expect to wait on a busy day! I found most of the ingredients that I would possibly need for my Filipino dishes, but I wish they would sell more Vietnamese and Japanese items. I'm not sure how large the Viet and Japanese communities are in this part of Jersey, but additional mixes, goodies, or marinades would be nice. Environment: If you're Asian, you'll understand the mix of smells and cleanliness. I personally don't have a problem with it granted that it isn't so bad that I do not feel comfortable shopping. It's not like that here. Yeah, it smells like seafood and it's a bit dirty, but it's just something you have to get used to. That's how many -- if not, most -- Asian markets are. I like this place, but East West Market needs a bigger and better location -- not just for parking, but to really expand on their products. The people working here are nice and don't mind helping you look for items. There is a solid customer base already -- hopefully this place grows to be bigger and better. read more

Minimum for credit cards is still $15.00. I really don't like this because I just wanted frozen longanisa....oh well. I must warn you the instant you walk in its smell like fish (yuck) it's more in the front of the store. Lots of filipino desserts to choose from. My favorite dessert that's usually homemade is the bibingka....OMG my fave. I've had the kuchinta and it's ok. I wanted to try a place closer to me to pick up kimchi. I found this place. It's in a small shopping plaza with all Asian shops. (except for the Krauzers) The outside of this place looks dreadful as does the inside. It looks filthy - products look old. It might not be old or dirty but it looks that way. Looked more like a 5 and dime than a supermarket. I did pop into the fish section (different room) and it seemed to look cleaner than the dry foods area. Refrigerated items have a very small section. I did find my brand of Kimchi (very small jars) and I left. Price was pretty expensive compared to other stores. (I buy a MASSIVE jar for $9. Here a small jar was $6) I'd only come back here in a pinch. read more

Absolutely dreadful. I wanted some Tom Kha Gai soup and decided that I would make it rather than pay $20 a quart the local Thai places charge. I needed an ingredient called galangal and knew that the local Shoprite or Whole Foods wouldn't carry it. Since this is the only Asian market in the area I decided to give it a shot. After seeing 4 or 5 cars waiting in a line for parking, I parked in a DunkinD across the busy street. Upon entering the store I was hit with a smell that would knock a vulture off an outhouse. Yes, there is a fish section attached to the main store but that is no excuse. Whole Foods has an extensive fish dept and you can barely detect a smell. The stench simply means that the store is never properly cleaned. This was also very obvious in the other half of the store, the packaged goods section. Every where you look, there is grime and filth. There is a general disarray with the products. Items seemed haphazardly placed and often aisle and shelve signs didn't match what was on the shelf. I should have left but they did have what I needed, namely galangal. I was expecting fresh but all they had was frozen. I found it in a very jumbled freezer section in the back of the store. It looked questionable but since that was all they had, I grabbed it. I decided to get a couple of other items I needed, including some fresh ingredients like lemongrass, for the soup. The checkout was very slow and the cashier struggled to find the items on their computerized checkout screens. For some reason the checkout tables were covered with newspaper. I got home and was eager to start cooking the soup for myself and my sick girlfriend. After spending about a hour cooking, everything seemed fine. I tasted as I went along and was satisfied. I dished up the soup and we dug in. Within minutes we both erupted with intestinal fireworks that bordered on the explosive. We both then spent a miserable night alternating the time we spent with John. Can I prove that the ingredients sourced at East West Market caused our distress? No, but I cook extensively using all manner of exotic ingredients. At one point in my life I was a professional chef. I am well versed in proper food handling. Given the unhygienic circumstances that prevail at EW Market I am 100% confident the products sold to me caused our distress. Needless to say I will never go there again. How the health dept. allows this miasmic, festering open sore of a store to remain open is beyond me. read more

East West Market is among one of the best Asian Grocery Stores in the area. It is not always clean, but they do serve their purpose. First of all it is divided into two sections. The first section is very dirty and smelly, but what do you expect that's where they sell the fish and other seafood such as crabs, squid, and shrimp. When it is in season they offer some of the best deals for crabs in the area. To the left of the fish market there are different types of exotic meets such as pork blood, tongue, and tripe, but the must try from this section would probably be their longanisa ( which is a Filipino type sausage often eaten for breakfast). The other section of the market probably offers everything you can think of when you hear the word Asian Market. They have different varieties of rice from normal white rice to red rice. They even have a million different kinds of teas located right next to the rice. The other sections consists of different Asian goodies, such as Asians snacks and chocolates. They also have different types of sauces that you can use for cooking. One of my favorite is definitely their Pad Thai Sauce. They also have different types of dried fish which is a common delicacy in the Philippines. For those who love those tiny little egg rolls at Filipino Parties because they have some that are premade, and all you have to is fry them. In front by the cashier they also have some Filipino pastries such as pan de sal which are Filipino rolls, pastillas which are Filipino candies made up of sugar and milk. If you're up for the adventure come explore this Asian Market, you never know what you'll find. They even sell balut which is another Filipino delicacy that is truly unforgettable! read more

Huge Filipino store. Bigger than any of the ones I go to in Bergen County. Size isn't everything though, because it's not like they have an extreme amount of variety compared to the other stores. But they do have an increased variety of beverages. I think I bought one of every flavor, from Thai Tea to Mangosteen. They have a private lot, but it's pretty small and it's shared with all the other stores on the strip. Pricing was average, maybe a few cents more expensive. Fish/meat market was decent. I'd stop in if I was thirsty, but I'd have to be in the area lol read more

This is my go to for Asian items and groceries. Never a problem trying to find bags of rice, herbal teas and fish/hoisin/saracha sauces. Parking can be a little iffy here so be prepared to circle around or sit for a few minutes. read more

Unfortunately, there aren't many options for Asian grocery stores nearby, but this place has got a lot of things I need when I'm in a pinch and can't find the ingredients I need at my regular grocery store. I'd say 75% of the time they have what I need. I suggest sticking to the dried or the canned ingredients. I am Filipino and born in the Philippines, bulucan. Silly of me to think that the food would be good. I bought two chicken empanadas. When I got to the car, I took a bite from one of the two. It was dry tasting. When I got home, about 8 minutes away, I wanted to finish the one I bit into for lunch. I started eating it more. I so happen to not like raisins and began to open it to remove them. Good thing I did. The empanada I was ALREADY EATING, had MOLD growth inside of it! THIS SHIT WAS ROTTEN. I will have pictures up. I should have known, they weren't in any refrigerator or warmer. They just have them laying out. This is America, I know there is food standards that need to be held. Stop selling things like you're still at the market market. Just DONT buy any food that they make. Makes me wonder about the restaurant they own. read more

I used to frequent East West a lot, simply because, when it comes to Asian markets, it was the only game in town. They have a decent selection of packaged goods, but prices are on the high side, produce is limited and frequently wilted, and the seafood is hit or miss. Though you can find very fresh fish, you also see stuff that is past its prime and the smell from the entire section indicates that cleanliness might be an issue. Finally, I have big issues with the quality control. Items on the shelf are often expired, and from the layer of dust, the turn-over doesn't seem high. The prepared goods, mostly baked items at the front of the store, should just be avoided entirely. I found mold on some buns I bought, and, thinking it was an isolated incident, purchased some empanada-type things later. Again, mold. Gross. They take credit cards, but the minimum is higher than I ever spend, it was $10, then $15, now I think it is $17. Parking in that area is always a nightmare, but they have back door access to the rear parking lot. read more

Why four stars? Because it sure beats carrying 30-50 pounds of groceries from NYC Chinatown to PATH. Then, dealing with heavy shopping bags on a packed PATH car and then walking home from Newark Penn Station. This place doesn't have the best selection of Chinese stuff, but it has all of the basics like Chinese Soy Sauce, which tastes different from Japanese Soy Sauces commonly found in regular supermarkets. They don't have the largest selection of fresh vegetables or have every Chinese canned or dry goods, but it's adequate. I cooked most of Chinese New Year dinner from stuff bought here. I still need to go to Chinatown for some things, but I don't need carry heavy bags back to Newark anymore. read more

I JUST walked in the door from visiting this place, and I must say I walked away disappointed. I went to East West specifically for the fish market. I was looking for some fresh fish fillets. I was originally looking for cod, which they didn't have (seems like a pretty standard fish that's odd for a fish market not to carry). After browsing the selection they did have, I decided to settle on some fresh tilapia. I ask the person at the counter if he can fillet the tilapia for me. He pointed to a bin at the front of the counter where there were pre-cut fillets of tilapia. I took one look and saw that they were frozen, as in STILL frozen in the bin. No thanks; if I want frozen fish I'll go to Stop & Shop. I think it's crazy that I go to a fish market and can't get the fish the way I want it. I can go to Shoprite in Nutley where I can get fresh fish cut how I want it. Be warned if you are planning to visit the fish market. Sorry, one star. read more

If I had the time or the patience, I'd probably drive to Hmart for my Asian food needs. But most days I'm lazy, and the close location of East West market is too awesome. It's a very small store - the aisles are narrow, and there are too many products on the shelves. It has that typical smell of an Asian market, and the place does not look like it's been redecorated in decades. There's a separate room with fish and vegetables, which actually appears brighter and cleaner than the main store... go figure. It's not the most glamorous place to shop, but I get my Asian sauces here (soy sauce, chili paste, sesame oil etc), my veggies (bok choy, kimchi), different kinds of ramen, Vietnamese coffee... basically everything I can't get at Pathmark. For that, I am glad this place exists. read more

I happened to stop by since I was shipping something at the LBC next door I thought I'd check it out. It looked kinda down trodden & figured, looks don't always matter, so I'd pick up some Filipino rice cake or "puto"for $3.99 ... my daughter always had great memories of her grandpa bringing puto home when she was a little girl. So I thought I'd do the same. I brought it home & we took a bite. It was hard & stale! I can't believe they were trying to sell it. With it, stay away coz if they would do this for one item, they would try and get away with it for others. One less customer, and I'll pass the word along as a warning to others. read more

If you're not Filipino or Asian, you may find the smell of this place a tad unpleasant. I'm used to it so I would've never given it a though until I had someone pointed it out to me. I'm not a big fan of this place but this is the best Asian market in the area and the closest to my house. They have a good variety of Filipino, Chinese and Japanese items. Some Vietnamese and Thai too. They basically have everything I need and want.. except KIMCHI. Oh how I wish they had kimchi. They don't have a lot of Korean items here in East West. The seafood and veggie section is great. The guys in the fish section are very nice. I wish the other staff members were friendlier though. I rarely get a simple hello or smile whenever I pay at the counter. There's a minimum amount for credit card transaction. Parking may be a bit difficult on certain days or time of the day. read more

I loooovve East-West Market. OK - let's start with location. Easy to get to heading either north or south on the Garden State Parkway. Their produce is fresh and they always have unsweetened soy milk, which I need and a fabulous tasting brand of Thai sesame oil, yummy. A good butcher counter too :p. Nice selection of frozen dumplings, fresh produce ... prices compared to where I live in Bergen County are ok, a little high but near me there is much more competition, with several Chinese groceries and a huge HMart within spitting distance of each other. By comparison, East-West is much more isolated, but that's what makes it so convenient when I'm spending a day in Essex County. The staff are attentive and friendly. And one day they gave me a couple stems of pussy willow, such a nice gift! read more

My husband and visited in there a few years back after seeing a challenge on youtube and wanted to see if they had the items. Came into the store and immediately felt unwelcomed. Was watched the entire time while on the store and not 1 person asked us if wr needed help with anything. We ended up leaving the store without purchasing anything. Guess they didnt need our money. Then sometimes you get this feeling that you just want to make that filipino food or any other asian food...or experiment on something. Guess where you can go? As a new resident of the area, I was really worried that I wouldn't be able to find a good Asian grocery store. Thanks to Yelp, I was able to find East West Market, and I am thrilled! Not only does this place have aisles of all different kinds of Asian foods (from Thai to Filipino to Chinese to Japanese to Indian), but it also has a genuine Asian fish and meat market, complete with live crabs, shrimp, and whole fish. The butcher part of the market didn't seem as well-stocked as the fish portion, though. While it's not Chinatown, it's a pretty great substitute.
