Fresh Grocer is a newer name of a longstanding supermarket in Cedar Grove. The 'Fresh Grocer' brand is associated with 'Shoprite,' so many of the Shoprite brands (Bowl & Basket, etc), are available here, and the prices/sales are worth checking out. The supermarket is on the small side, so try to shop during early morning or evening hours to avoid crowded aisles in the store and tight parking. read more

We have been shopping this store since it was Foodtown, about 25 years and like it very much. But, there is absolutely a problem with their pricing. The digital coupons don't always work, I was overcharged $25 on a rib eye and $3 on another item. A cashier 'forgot' to process $16 credit on another item in which I was overcharged. That is a total of $44! They will make good on this, but it is a hassle. The pattern is very clear, they need to fix their pricing it's not acceptable. It appears that we are getting ripped off, because we are. Check your receipts before you leave! read more

I don't know where they find these kids to work. More concerned with scrolling in their phones than helping people OR actually working. I asked a cashier why does so many look bored and so unapproachable. "He responds because most are bored and management and owner suck" which my reply than find another job many retail jobs available. Of course could not answer that I say to manager/owners of Green Grocers get it together already I'm tired of the grumpy and just rude employees. This morning: Vegetable display with box of yellow squash, a box of green zucchini and a box of eggplant with a $.99/pound sign in front - I took 2 green zucchini and 2 yellow squash. At checkout, I was charged $1.29/pound for yellow squash. When I questioned this, was told only green squash and eggplant was $.99/pound. The sign in front of the 3 boxed items is very- purposely misleading!! It reads Green squash and eggplant $.99/pound, yet the yellow squash is front and center in this display. When I complained to the lady monitoring the self checkout- she did nothing. When I complained to the produce guy, he said I will tell my manager - I stressed it was misleading to both employees- both of whom couldn't have cared less. While the service has improved, I remain concerned about the local manager, Dave Secor. Several years ago when I asked a man behind me (in line) to give me space while I key in my credit card, he started yelling at me. His yelling was consistent and I tried to get the store manager to intervene while this customer yelled at me. Secor actually left the premises during this incident and he left it to one of his employees to take care of this. He showcased his cowardice, lack of professionalism and ZERO management skills while this individual yelled at me. I was the one who had to call the local police department, while I tried to ensure this unhinged individual would not leave the scene. Apparently, The Fresh Grocer and/or Mr. Secor have no policies in place for customers yelling at others *for no reason.* Apparently, the local Cedar Grove residents and folks from the Caldwells have embraced unhinged tirades against shoppers who *have every right to shop where they want to shop. There are a lot of actions that I have witnessed first-hand in Cedar Grove that make me wonder if the Civil Rights Movement has ever been embraced by the residents of this provincial town. I often wonder if Cedar Grove has ever joined the 21st century. I reported him to his boss based in Woodland Park, NJ (at the time.) At least, this person was professional and took ownership. We have been shopping for groceries over 22 years at this Cedar Grove location. The dynamics have changed dramatically since it changed from Nicholas Foodtown to Fresh Grocer. Specifically, I have witnessed some seafood and deli staff grumpy and unpleasant and snapping at customers unprovoked on more than one occasion. Personally, I try to roll with the punches myself and always ask how they are doing with a smile and not just say I need I want.... The staff does not have an easy job and it can be stressful at times. But that does not warrant lashing out at any customer. My wife returned several times saying "wow the people at the deli are so rude and Sheryl in seafood is so moody. Sometimes she says "hi sweetly what can I get you" but today she got so upset because I changed my mind and asked for two lobsters instead of one". Sheryl got angry and said "well I took one lobster out already can't you make up your mind before you tell me?" Then an older man with white hair in the deli department got upset when my wife asked him to please trim the prosciutto. He said "I always do. Anything else you want to tell me so I know how to do my job?" Wow! When I came in to the store today I told the customer services I wanted to speak to the manager. She said Dave might have left for the day but asked if she could help me. The moment I told her I wanted to speak to him about rude staff she asked ""Deli Department?" I said yes. I asked "how did you know? She replied, my mom was here yesterday and said the same thing about the deli staff. She then told me Dave the manager does not call customers back and that I'd have to come back another time when he's there. Usually in the morning Not a good policy for a local store to have Also, although most food products are good quality, we have seen a significant increase in returns. We have had to return steamers, whole chicken, cucumbers, tomatoes and fresh basil to name but a few, because they were not fresh and smelled bad or died the following day. That never happened to us when it was a Foodtown operation. It may be advisable to have department meetings and for management to figure out what's biting at some staff members. Sadly, my wife doesn't feel comfortable going into this neighborhood grocery store any longer and has opted to go further away and shop elsewhere to avoid supporting this store that has forgotten that it is the local community that supports it and it's staff. Please address this matter directly since your policy is not to return customer calls. Based on the number of negative responses on this thread it's about time to address it We'd like to come back once it changes. read more

Gone way down hill since it was Foodtown. The fish and butcher counter are closed at 6 o'clock basically eliminating anyone commuting from work to pick up something fresh for dinner that night. The butcher while still pretty good still doesn't compare to when it was Foodtown. Not the same products as Foodtown basically it's Shop Rite Bowl and Basket products which makes me ask. Nothing screams "Italians shop here" like the Foodtown of Cedar Grove! Store is tiny, but they have such a great selection of fine Italian goods. They also have a wonderful hot food buffet for that lunch or dinner in a rush. Staff is very personable and friendly. Came here for the first time today and I was really unimpressed. The store itself looks like it could use a makeover and the layout is just horrible. The aisles are way too tight and it feels like being stuck in standstill traffic. This store doesn't have enough of a selection of items and I didn't find many organic products. The meat didn't look appetizing and I found that the items were overpriced. I just moved to this area and I can definitely say I won't be coming back here. I would rather take the trip to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. read more

I come here out of convenience but will typically make the trip elsewhere for my groceries. Overall their prices are rather high compared to other stores. Even when using my Foodtown card, I find the savings to be nominal. Their produce section is just ok - fresh but not impressively expansive (which is a theme throughout the store). They have decent ready-made food if you're in a pinch, and their sushi is fresh and tasty. Cashiers could be friendlier but the folks in the deli department are always very nice and helpful. Parking is tight; I find the lot to the side of the building to be more favorable than the one in front. read more

I have had 2 cupcakes from here. One was for my shower, it was set up as a wedding dress. And another I ordered for my fiance's 40th birthday party cigar themed cake. Both tasted amazing! I have been going to this Foodtown since i moved to Cedar Grove in 2011 and have loved it; I get everything there but I never got fish before. This past Sunday I got a pound of filet of sole and when we cooked it and sat down to eat it the next day, we discovered it was filled with small dead worms. I called the store and I was told to bring the fish and worms in and all I would get back is the money I spent on it. I truly believe we should have gotten more based on the traumatic experience and pure inconvenience. Will never get fish there again. read more

This is a smaller grocery store which I tend to go to out of convenience since it's on my way home from work. However, it's refreshing to shop at a smaller store and not have to trek through a gigantic supermarket to get just a few items. I find their prices to be higher than, say, ShopRite, but it's convenient and you can get in and out. Be sure to sign up for a Foodtown card (it takes 2 minutes)--you won't get any of the price savings without it. Their fruit and produce is usually in great condition. The packaged meat and poultry they sell is a bit of a mystery to me. They sell it under their brand (Nicholas Markets), but I can't quite tell if it's of a higher grade than, say, Perdue. It's cheaper, that's for sure. I'm a fan of Foodtown. read more

Its small but I haven't found anything missing that I need. I like its small (and manageable) size because it doesn't feel like I'm in a triathlon while grocery shopping. The ethnic-specific foods in the deli area along with the section that has labels entirely in Italian are appealing to me. Pistachio spread? YAY! Butter Beans? YAY! Weird, unpronounceable beverages? YAY! Staff is extremely helpful and friendly which is a nice change compared to the abrasive staff at all other stores I've shopped at in the area. Still have tomatoes from mexico as of last week !?! Almost no organic selection. Still don't trust their seafood and the seafood that looks good is wildly overpriced. I really enjoy this Foodtown, everyone who works here is so nice and has been here for years. They have so many more organic products than before, it is much nicer than it used to be. The produce is good, sometimes a bit pricier than other places, but not much. Very convenient hours, always open during storms and freak weather! Overall smaller than other grocery store chains (i.e. Shoprite and A&P) but surprisingly had everything I wanted. Clean, organized, and great customer service, however because of its small size the place feels quite cramped. I wrote a review in 2013 about errors on my bill and stopped going to this Foodtown because of this. However for convenience I decided to go back recently only to find nothing has changed ! I was over-charged twice in two days !!!! In 2013 I was charged $22 for a six pack of Snapple and have since checked every bill . I can honestly say since returning I have found an error 7 out of 10 visits, this cannot possibly be unintentional. I still feel the store is dingy and staff not the friendliest so now I have vowed NEVER to shop at Foodtown Cedar Grove again, it is just not worth the frustration !!! Take my advice and stay clear of Foodtown or check you bill carefully EVERY time .......... read more

This food town is great. We shop all over Essex County markets, but on Saturday night get our burgers and kabob supplies here. I live in two towns over and its worth the trip. The clear salad is great and when I buy my taco shells they are never broken like the other Foodtowns. Love Sunnys next door too. Low fat vanilla is terrific. read more

It troubles me to write reviews like this but I guess that's what sites like this are for, to leave honest reviews. I can't say anything bad about the Foodtown in Cedar Grove as a grocery store but please be cautious of their bakery! We ordered a specialty cake from them and we were confident that it would come out the way we wanted. It was for our baby shower and the concept was a baby block cake. It was to be a sheet cake with 3 stacked baby blocks on top, with chocolate mouse and cannoli filling. The icing would be butter cream with a few fondant accent pieces. The baker Lisa who we spoke with and placed the order was really nice and even gave me her personal email to send pictures of what we wanted etc. Now comes the morning to pick up the cake. My mother and I were so nervous because the cake from the start did not look stable. The baby blocks were just stacked on top of each other with no support!!! By the time we got a mile up the road sure enough down topples the top baby block!!! Frantic before guests arrive my family is trying to fix this damaged cake. Luckily a few fresh flowers were able to make it look more appealing. Now onto the taste, horrible, horrible, horrible! It was so disappointing. The icing was not butter cream but instead all fondant that tasted like paste. I guess to make the cake look bigger they put extra icing on the sides, but when you cute into to it to serve it, it was nothing but a slab of icing. It wasn't until about a 1/4 into the cake did you actually hit cake. The filling in the cake tasted nothing like chocolate mouse or cannoli. The guests were all looking around at each other and began to question what the flavor was supposed to be. Jokes started being made that it tasted like big red gum, a fireball, or did the baker spill cinnamon in it and just leave it. It was such an awful taste the no one finished their piece and we had more than half of a cake left. Extremely disappointed we called the next morning to place our complaint. The bakery told us, oh well we use a cinnamon oil for our cannoli. Cinnamon oil? I've never heard of such a thing in a cannoli! First off, no one explained that to us, and what would have happened if someone had an allergy to it? When you order chocolate mouse with cannoli filling why would I ever think it would taste like cinnamon. We told them we would be in the next morning with the left over cake and they could taste it themselves. Sure enough we brought it in and meet with the store GM. He we so nice and very accommodating. His service was superb and I can't say anything bad about him. He apologized and felt very bad. Our money was refunded but that still didn't change the embarrassing situation we were put in with our guests. It's one of those things we will definitely have a story to tell our future little one. read more

I shop here all the time. What I find most frustrating are the clogged aisles and checkout. Whoever constructed this was not thinking clearly. Staff is good. It seems that large displays are put right in front of item I want. Produce packers seem to block the entire aisles when restocking. For me, its a space problem that I don't like.
