I noticed the good reviews for this restaurant and thought I would give it a try. Its very clean and it has a nice decor. The prices are average, service is good. The food is very good. Its fresh and tasty. Some of the dishes that stood out were wanton soup, house mefun and the egg roll was the best in Terre Haute. They were not busy and I don't know why because they should be. We were on our way to Ohio and stayed in Terra Haute for the evening. I'm Chinese and I'm pretty particular about the authenticity of Chinese restaurants. This is by far the best Chinese restaurant I have been to in 25 years. The service is fast and friendly. The food is excellent. We had the lamb in chili oil and fish porridge. Portions are large and taste is authentic and exceptional. Lamb in chili oil taste spicy and Schezwan and has lots of vegetables. Fish porridge reminds me of my mom's cooking. Fish is fresh and porridge is nice and thick. Wonton soup is delicious. Even the rice taste floral. We will definitely be back if we were to pass through Terra Haute. read more

Great great great! We have been here a few times and have tried something different every time. First off, service has always been top notch. They are very attentive and helpful. I told her to surprise us with an appetizer and it did not disappoint! She said onion pancakes are a crowd pleaser and something we've never tried before. They were excellent. Mango chicken was wonderful and so was the chili pepper chicken (pretty spicy). My girls are young and love this place too. If you are looking for something authentic and different try this place! I lived in China for two years and I will tell you that this is the most authentic Chinese food you can find anywhere around here. Even most big city Chinese places have pandered to the American palate. Don't bother with the Thai food -- the staff are Chinese and so is the food. If you want Thai food, go somewhere where there are Thai people cooking. That having been said, there are many treats here you cannot find at American-Chinese restaurants. Yes, you might not like everything but that doesn't mean it's not authentic. Many of the things found here you would not be able to find at your typical American-Chinese restaurant because they have taken "unpopular" items off the menu once Americans turn their noses up at them. But notice how many Chinese people are eating here. I haven't tried everything, but so far nearly everything is authentic and tasty -- just stay away from the Thai dishes. Finally, you can order off the menu -- the cook(s) can be convinced to make something if they know how to make it. I asked for some "leng ban" cucumber 冷拌黄瓜 and received a very nice rendition. MEATY 毛家红烧牛 - Mao Family Braised Pork * This is a meaty/fatty delicacy with the taste of five-spice. 鱼香肉丝 - Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce * A staple across China and this is a great rendition of it -- thin strips of pork with vegetables. 本楼星洲米粉 - House Singapore Noodles * Delicious curry noodles with an assortment of meats. 四川干煸牛肉丝 - (Sichuan fried) pan-shredded beef * Delicious and spicy savory beef dish, usually with a sprig or two of cilantro. VEGETARIAN 蒜蓉空心菜 - On Choy with garlic * It's said that this dish shouldn't be eaten too much because the hollow stems will make you hollow, but that's just a myth. Tasty and authentic! 蒜蓉豆苗 - Snow pea shoots in garlic sauce * Another vegetarian delight with a nice garlic flavor. 尖椒土豆丝 - Shredded potatoes with spicy peppers * This is not like hash-browns because the potatoes are not cooked until they are mushy. They are lightly al-dente with a spicy finish. 醋溜土豆丝 - Shredded potatoes with vinegar sauce * As above, but with a tart but tasty vinegar sauce. 东北地三鲜 - Potato, eggplant and green pepper * The "three earthly delights" from the northeast, in a tasty sauce that is lightly sweet-tart. read more

First time eating here last night and I was pleasantly surprised! It was nicely decorated - I was actually surprised - the outside doesn't give off the same vibe as the inside. But the food is why you're reading this and also why I'm writing this! I tried the Garlic Mash as an appetizer and I really liked it. It's served cold which was a surprise but it was good! A little spicy but nothing too crazy. Maybe a little salty but I'm not complaining. For my entree I chose the General Tso's with Lo Mein noodles and the portions were pretty large and it tasted much better than what other restaurants serve. It wasn't as syrupy sweet as most. Entrees come with your choice of 3 soups. I chose Wonton Soup and it was tasty as well. I also tried the Orange Chicken that a friend ordered and it was good too. They put actual orange peel shavings in it which gave it a fresher real, and again, non syrupy taste. We both really liked all we ordered and the service was also very pleasant. It probably helped we were the only customers there - it was 8:30 PM. Give it a try - Don't just pass it by! read more

In comparison to other Chinese/Asian food, this place is well above average. In comparison to Chinese/Asian food in Terre Haute, this place is the cream of the crop. I split the Lobster and Mongolian beef with my Girlfriend and they were both excellent. The lobster was seasoned with unfamiliar Asian seasoning that was extremely tasty. The Mongolian beef was some of the best I've had. I usually worry about ordering the beef due to a lot of Asian recipes using calling for excessive salt, but this was just right. Both dishes were extremely favorable and came with generous portions. Next time i'm in Terre Haute, I will definitely stop here again. read more

I was excited to have a nicer-seeming sit-down Chinese restaurant in town, but I honestly think I'd rather just hit up Royal Mandarin for take-out. The service here was always friendly and quick. I went a few times with my boo and a couple of times with my family. The servers were able to joke around with us and full of smiles. We had a great time. I mostly liked the food I had. The only thing I wasn't openly a fan of was the Pad Thai. It just didn't have very much flavor. How on earth do you make bland pad thai? Not even the peanuts or the chile flakes stood out! Anyway, my biggest problem with this place is that the food really never liked me. I feel like there's always that chance at after-meal regret with Asian food in general, but anything I ate at Eastern House just never settled well for me. What a bummer. read more

Nice remodel, friendly staff. Lunch prices are dirt cheap and portions are generous. I had to get a to-go box for my mango chicken because I couldn't finish it all. It was delicious though, and presentation was nice. May ask for them to add some heat next time. Also ordered a boba tea, which was delicious and may be the only place in TH where you can order one. They don't offer as many Thai entrees as Exotic Thai did, but my experience was 10/10 and I will definitely be back for more. read more

I am extremely disappointed with Eastern House. This restaurant used to be called Exotic Thai, and they had the best Thai in the Midwest I believe. The Thai curry was thick and flavorful, and they always got the spicy level right. The curry used to be SO good, but the Thai curry now at Eastern House is extremely watery and has very little flavor. Strangely, the to go container of curry had about an inch layer of oil on the top. I thought this was weird and kinda gross that they would put that much oil in, and I just decanted it off into the garbage. I also got veggie fried rice as a side, and the fried rice was like any other fried rice you'd get at a Chinese restaurant. It had the broccoli, the carrots, the peas, and was fried in oil. No special spices, nothing out of the ordinary. It was so plain, and I was irritated I didn't have soy sauce in my to-go bag because it needed it for sure! Both dishes were so bland, I immediately regretted my purchase. I couldn't believe that a restaurant that used to make such good food had just gone downhill like that. This Thai restaurant had changed their name several times in the past (something about foreigners having a limit to the years they can own a business in the states), but the new family members have definitely let me down, I'm sorry to say. I would not recommend Eastern House. There are plenty of restaurants in Terre Haute- try Tokyo across the street! read more

I ordered the Pad Se Ew and Crab Rangoons for takeout. The rangoons were decent, the sauce that it came with was excellent. However, I was disappointed with the pad se ew. Overall it was fairly bland and flavorless. The vegetables in it were fresh and delicious, I just wish it wasn't lacking that traditional Thai flavor altogether. This is my family's favorite place to dine in Terre Haute! The owner, Helen, offers Thai and Chinese selections and is incredibly accommodating to those with allergies (Ex. gluten-free, egg) and special diets (Ex. vegetarian, vegan). The food is always delicious and full portion sizes with soup and a bowl of rice included in the entree. Pricing is very reasonable and even better for lunch hours! Helen and her staff are very friendly and down-to-earth people who provide excellent customer service and help choosing from the extensive menu. The internal environment has an intimate feel with dim lighting, booths, and soothing music, but also offers family tables (including a very large table in a separate room) for larger parties. If I could pay you to NEVER enter this establishment, I would. I rarely leave Yelp reviews, so if I do, you know something is bad. Myself and two others came in to order some bubble tea to go. Almost right off the bat, the woman at the desk taking our order was EXTREMELY rude. I drink bubble/boba tea often and am quite knowledgeable about the beverage and the typical "toppings" that usually come with it. We began very kindly asking questions about their boba tea and the toppings they offer. The woman was literally making faces at us, rolling her eyes, and making extremely rude comments--acting as if we knew nothing about bubble tea. She had no clue what Lychee Jelly is--which is embarrassing for her--and tried to make us feel dumb for asking about it. It is one of the most popular toppings in Boba Tea establishments around the country. Shame on that worker, and on this restaurant for treating us so poorly for simply asking questions about their products. And to top it all off, the boba tea was terrible. We got a jasmine green tea and thai tea w/ boba. The boba tasted terrible and not fresh, and the thai tea was warm with hardly any ice. We couldn't even finish it, and had to throw it away! My boyfriend and I decided to try Eastern House today. We order Szechuan Dandan Noodles, General Tso chicken, and a green curry with 2 bubble teas. The bubble teas are the best. I got Thai tea while my bf got a papaya one. The papaya flavor is pretty much similar to the real papaya taste, which is surprising. However, the three dishes are not quite impressive, and way too salty. I am a salt-person, but I still found that they dishes were seasoned way too much salt. We got the dandan noodle for appetizer, but it was not as spicy as we expected (maybe our expectation was too high as we are used to eating super spicy food). And one thing strange about that dish was that it would given your tongue a tingling feeling and kinda numb your tongue. (Idk whether this is what authentic dandan noodles is supposed to taste like). The General Tso chicken is so-so. But the curry, in my opinion, seriously needs some improvement. It was runny (and salty) even though the curry flavor was bold and authentic. Also, the range of ingredients for the curry was kinda limited: chicken, eggplant, and peppers with some basil for garnishment. Both my bf and I thought that this place is a great place for bubble tea as their bubbles are correctly cooked and maintain a right softness. The flavors are various and delicious. And $3.25 for a cup of bubble tea is not bad as it is a rear treat in Terre Haute. However, food won't be the reason to bring us back because the quality does not meet the high price (Most menu dishes for dinner are $8-$10) read more

I was craving Thai and remembered this place just opened, we ordered Pad Thai and Pad see ew (sp) carry out. I could tell as soon as I opend the containers this was not going to exceed my foodie craving. No seasoning at all and seemed like the wrong noodles, they were more like pasta soggy instead of rice noodles. Everything tasted the same between the two entrees. However, they did use fresh vegetables and fresh herbs, shame hey couldn't get the correct flavors. My wife and I ate here for the first time January 30, 2017. We both had the Pad Thai noodles with a spring roll appetizer. I also had Thai tea. The food was delicious, presented well, and abundant. I want to point out two things that make this restaurant different from other Asian eateries. 1) the staff is friendly, fun, and talkative. (They are not standoffish) 2) They offer a Sunday "feast" option. The Sunday "feast" is a meal that the customer will eat with nine other guests. You must sign up for it. When it is your turn, the restaurant contacts you and lets you know to come in. The cost is $20 per person, and the feast consists of entrees that you may not normally order. The menu is large and includes a number of traditional dishes, and everything I've tried has been executed very well.
