Overall, Homey Hot Pot was a good experience. My friends and I did the AYCE sushi when we went, which is priced at around $26, which is not bad for the quantity you can order. The sushi is great, but is a little heavy on the rice. The issue we encountered was the service. The first two orders came out pretty quickly, but for our third order, we only did 2 rolls, and it took over 1.5 hours despite us giving several reminders to the waiters. This was my mom's and my first hot pot experience and it hit the spot! They had clear instructions on the table for how everything worked and a highly visual menu with nice pictures of all the options. The price for all you-can-eat was pretty good, we just couldn't eat it all. I think the lunch special would be the perfect amount if it had been available at the time of our visit. We were seated quickly, our food came out quickly, and our drinks and broth was topped up often. You check out at the counter, when you're ready to go, which I always appreciate. This is the first time experiencing the Hot pot craze that seems to be growing. That being said my review cannot be construed as anything other than a novice hot potter that was slightly overwhelmed. The service was exceptional and the attention to our needs was spot on. From the time we sat down till we left the help was always close by. Parking is also close by with a parking garage right next to restaurant and street parking available as well. We advised our server it was out first time trying the hot pot and she sent over a gentleman who took his time explaining every single page of the menu and answering any questions we had. Homey hot pot offers all you can eat hot pot or all you can eat sushi or both together. The price is only a few dollars difference and actually quite a value for what you are allowed to choose from. You start off by picking a soup base and then page by page you choose what items you would like brought to your table. Keep in mind that you actually cook the items you choose at your table. So don't freak out when raw ingredients are sat in front of you. Once the broth/soup is sat on the burner and it comes to a boil, you can start adding your ingredients. You are the chef, cook and mastermind behind your own concoctions. We were advised that the food can be a little bland so they have a very nice seasoning bar where you can mix and match any desired flavors. They have a couple of recipes on the wall that help you build a nice dipping sauce. You do have to be aware of the temp of your broth/ soup and that can be a little tedious at first. There is a lot going on and your table fills up with food very fast. There is so much to choose from I would recommend asking for smaller portions to start so you can enjoy the many offerings they have. We chose to go with the basics and were perfectly happy. We left full and were pleased with the selection and service. The restaurant appeared very clean and the employees very friendly. We would of given 5 stars but for the amount of work to cook and season the food made the experience feel more like work than pleasure. For people who don't know what hot pot is, it is when they give you raw ingredients of your choice and you boil it at your table yourself. Update: my husband and I have now leveled up to professional hot-pot-ers. It truly is a skill. While you wait for your food, you need to go find the sauce bar. Load up some bowls with whatever sauces and spices you want to add to your broth or dip your noodles in. Pro-tip: get some yum yum sauce for dipping noodles. For the broth, I like to order the tube bone broth and then I add in chili oil, garlic, green onion, and seafood sauce. Also, to the side of the sauce bar, they have some miso soup and also some sort of desert soup thing that I haven't tried. Another pro-tip: be sure to order some dumplings for your soup. I didn't know that was an option for the longest time. That was time wasted. Another update: the price is about $29 for unlimited sushi and hot pot. Finally a dedicated hot pot place in town! I'm giving it an A-OK rating because Homie/Homey is truly A-OK compared to my other hot pot experiences (grew up in the San Gabriel Valley [SGV] in Southern California where hot pot restaurants proliferated) and because of the poor user experience (for newbies). Since this place is new, they're still working out some operational kinks and they seem a bit inefficient. Also, Homie/Homey needs to upgrade from chinese-only menus. I'm used to and can manage with chinese-only menus in the SGV because of the saturation of my fellow Chinese folks, but it's not conducive in a more diverse town like Bloomington. Furthermore, there are no directions for folks who have never had hot pot + the employees don't seem trained yet on how to explain. So, in case you're looking for pointers, here goes: *First things first, choose your soup base. The spicy soup base is pitiful because it's not spicy at all. *Second, choose your meats, veggies and other fixings. Unlike shabu, there isn't a set plate of veggies ready for you. *Lastly, after you order, pick your sauce! Hot pot is traditionally eaten with Sa Cha (the sauce on the way left on the lower row). It's made of soybean oil, garlic, shallots, chilis, brill fish, and dried shrimp....and I think it's pretty gross even though I grew up with it. So you can't go wrong with some chili, soy sauce, garlic & cilantro. It's really weird that they have random spices and sauces that we don't traditionally eat with hot pot (like ketchup) but whatever. The sushi that comes with the hot pot AYCE is actually decent. This is also because I've been to a "Japanese" restaurant in town that completely butchered a California roll, so my standards are pretty low here. I honestly do not have enough good things to say about this food, just went for the first time and it's already my new favorite hidden gem, planning on going back again this week. Each person gets their own bowl of soup base (different options for the soup base, and they have a vegetarian one), and then you can order any and all toppings to cook inside your pot and eat. They had SO many toppings we barely had room on the table, and you can order as many different items as you want. It was so fun experimenting with different items to cook in the broth, I got to try a new mushroom (enoki, order it! Once you cook them they are like yummy little noodles), and they had so many different seafood and vegetable options to choose from. They also had a long bar of sauces to add in or to use on your cooked veggies/meat that I loved, I added fresh ginger, green onions, yum yum sauce, hot chili oil, and another hot sauce at different points in time and it was really fun creating new flavor combos. They were really attentive about asking if you wanted more soup as you cook and eat, but honestly we ate so much in just the first round we were stuffed. The sushi is all included if you do the all you can eat sushi and soup combo, the sushi was good, def not my favorite (almost all the rolls offered were pretty basic and had shrimp tempura in them, I like a wide variety of sushi cram packed with different fish), but I mean the main star of the show is the hot pot experience for sure, so that's fine (I wasn't there for the sushi, it was just a nice little addition). The sashimi was good! Definitely a hidden gem, I've lived here my whole life and never tried them before and I'm so sad I didn't catch on sooner! We've always enjoyed the atmosphere and service here. The food had been very good in the past, however, this time we were a little disappointed. The sushi was rather bland and one note. He contemplated getting all you can sushi and hotpot but ended up just getting sushi. I got sushi and a very large bowl of hotpot. They are still cooking everything in the back which is fine but they are still pacing everything like it's still a hotpot place. In Hong Kong, we would spend a couple of hours cooking our own meals around a hotpot but since their ventilation system is broken, they have to cook everything in the back. So, instead of spending a couple of hours there it's much faster but the employees still treat it like it was a slower paced "actual" hotpot place. It took us awhile to get the check but since it was still noon there weren't many customers waiting to get a table. We will definitely be back for the sushi. Their sushi is below average especially after they just included all you can eat sushi to their all you can eat hot pot (used to be an extra charge for adding sushi to hot pot). Their sashimi slices are very thin and you can only order 8 slices. Their sushi rolls are okay for all you can eat, but need to improve on sashimi quality and quantity. I was honest and said I'd never had hot pot so I had no idea how to order. Apparently you pick one seafood, six veggies and one meat? The menu gives no instructions. Once he told me that, he rushed me through it and gave me no additional time to look at the menu. No clue where the meatballs fit in. He didn't explain that at all. He just assumed I'd want chicken and didn't give me time to pick a meat. He also pointed to a bar off to the side and said we could go there for wasabi and things of that nature. We got some additions for our soup (garlic, spicy oil, etc). The portions are big so we didn't ask for anything else, as it's "all you can eat". I'm honestly not sure how you'd even go about ordering extra since he didn't explain it. Also- it says "don't waste food, waste food charge of $8.99/lb". Usually, I am not one to leave reviews on restaurants, however my experience here was absolutely PHENOMENAL. After a bad hot potting experience a few years ago, my girlfriend had no interest in going, but after some consideration and research we came out here! We were promptly seated at our table and drinks were brought to us within seconds. The tables around us were extremely clean and beautifully set up and the bathrooms were extremely clean and secluded away from tables despite how small the store was. Our server brought a gentleman aside to explain to us what hotpot was, how to cook our food, how long, explained the broth base to me that i wanted, and even broke down prices for us.
