I love Eastern Market so much omg. So many cute things there from small businesses and they aren't that expensive. I got a beautiful handmade mirror from Peru, and some nice jewelry as well. Then there's the food which is delicious, and then inside there's more produce and meat and cheese and even a bakery. Such a nice place, I go just about every Saturday. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I like this one better than Dupont! read more

I stopped by after having an appointment at the Navy Yard, and I am so glad I did! There weren't as many options as there are in the summer, but don't let that deter you. Inside, there's a bakery as well as several mini markets selling anything from meats to Asian condiments. I was looking for a small bite to each, and I noticed that the Asian market (located right next to the bakery) was selling steamed dumplings. They did not disappoint! I got the vegetable dumplings and it was full of flavor. Definitely recommend!! I'll be back in the spring and summer time to see the market in full swing! read more

Iiiiit's just...... o-kaaaaaaaay. It's worth visiting at least once just to check out the outdoor vendors' stuff and the bakery inside. I went there on a bad day, a rainy day, so not all the vendors were there. I think it started raining as I was driving there. The outdoor vendors sold handcrafted jewelry, handmade soaps and oils, clothing, winter wear, paintings, Hispanic food, Greek olives and oils, fruits and vegetables, wooden frog toys that make sounds when you run a stick along their spine. I had missed the Filipino food vendor, the whole reason why I went here in the first place, likely due to the rain. Inside of the market, they had an awesome bakery on one end and a hall in the other end. The sides of the market were lined with poultry, meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables on display. One section even sold Filipino goods (for a higher price than your typical Filipino store) such as pancit canton, corn beef, rice noodles, etc. There's a cafe by the hall that's apparently popular for its food items. The long tables were packed with people and there was a long line at the register, so I didn't bother checking it out. The fruits and veggies are overpriced but I was okay with it since it was supporting local business owners. I bought kiwis and persimmons. The bakery is a must. They have so much delicious treats. I was still full from my meal at a Smithsonian museum that I settled for just one cannoli with chocolate chips ($3). It was so freakin' good that I had wished I bought two of them. I used to be a committed Dupont Market goer when I moved to DC but ever since I moved to SE, I've been in love with Easter Market. I go every Sunday to drop off my compost! I love the diversity of vendors from amazing, fresh coffee and donuts and breakfast sammies, to fresh fruit and amazing mushrooms, to small, local artisanal artists and thrifters! It can get pretty crowded with strollers and dogs and people, so I like to go at 8:30/9am before the crowd gets there. I try to get some of my produce there at least a couple times a month, of course it's a bit more expensive than your standard grocery store, but its just better! All the sellers are so friendly and happy to be there! They're helpful, knowledgeable, and often very funny! Highly recommend you treat yourself so some outside time and a pastry or other little treat from them! read more

Can't believe I haven't written a review yet for one of my all-time favorite public markets: Eastern Market. We wait eagerly for summer every year just so we can do a few weekend day trips into DC specifically to hit up Eastern Market in the summer months when not only are there the year-round specialty shops and neighborhood gems such as Capitol Hill Books, Peregrine Espresso, Radici and Pitango Gelato but also an entire array of artisans, farmers market fresh produce and outdoor vendors of literally every stripe. Our girls have found some of their favorite jewelry here over the years, we always come home with fresh, sweet fruit and vegetables, and it's just overall a wonderful experience walking around and seeing and participating in the entire public market experience. Parking is always a challenge in DC but usually it's not a problem finding street parking in the neighborhood as long as you're willing to walk a block or two (but remember, be courteous! You're parking in residential areas: do NOT block someone's driveway and pay attention to the signage!) This market is a must do if you're in DC or visiting for a week or more. There is a ton of stalls with things from fresh produce, flowers, cheese, oils, soaps, accessories and more. Definitely a neat spot. And there is the indoor area plus the tents that branch off quite a ways. The stores surrounding the outside tents are also really cool. Note: the produce is expensive. You are paying in part for the experience, so I wouldn't recommend actually getting all your groceries from here if you are on budget. The samples in August are great! You get to try the local fresh fruits. That was probably my favorite part. The bakery on the inside of the building was okay, but definitely not the best cherry streusel of my life. read more

Ma Brown is a Pecan Con Artist This is a fun market; unfortunately I was the victim of a heinous highway robbery committed by one "Ma Brown". I'm a student and new in town. This was my first time at the market and I stumbled upon Ma Brown's baked goods stall. She seemed like a nice old lady, very chatty, so I thought I'd buy a mini pie. She said cash was best, so I handed her a twenty. The pie in question is about three inches in diameter so I expected it to cost maybe 5-7 bucks. Wrong. This broad charged me FIFTEEN DOLLARS for a pie the size of my palm. I thought wow that is a lot but I'm new to the city so I figured maybe that's just what things cost here. Wrong again! I got home and looked her up online. I found her on Twitter and LO AND BEHOLD, she usually sells these godforsaken mini pies for $4.50. This absolute charlatan of a pastry chef price gouged me into the next century. If I never own a house, I blame Ma Brown. In conclusion, if you've a hankering to be financially RUINED, do head on down to ole Ma Brown's. I'm sure she'd be thrilled to fleece you six ways to Sunday the way she did me read more

UPDATE June 2020: I have upgraded the rating from one star to 3 in recognition of the changes made since my May posting. I appreciate the management introducing separate entrances ( and waiting lines) to indoor and outdoor parts of the market. I was interested only in the outdoor portion and this time the line was moving very quickly and there was reasonable and at the same time socially -distanced customers' foot traffic to the line of outdoor vendors. Three stars is mainly for remaining issue with the selection ( only one vendor offering organic produce). But huge improvement at least in an increased number of vendors. Thank you! This is May 23s review/ Saturday morning. My first trip to my favorite Eastern Market on the weekend after new COVID rules were introduced. I appreciate all the measures taken : masks' requirement, one way traffic inside, etc. However, two major issues: (1) customers/traffic flow is very inefficiently managed; (2) lack of organic produce ( only one vendor) that signals poor marketing or terms offered to the organic farmers to attract them. On the first issue of inefficient management: there is no separation of lines to go inside or only shop from outside vendors. Many people come just for outside vendors. Segregation of the lines is easily achieved by changing the entry points: for inside of the market from S Carolina ( the now closer Hall entrance) with an exit on the opposite side where the customers either go out or join the second line for the outdoor shopping. The entry for outdoor only part would then be where the current exit is, and the exit at the end of the outdoor traffic where the current entry is. This is just an example . With half an hour analysis of possible traffic flows any knowledgeable project manager can come up with an optimal solution to respect social distancing but at the same time increase the flow of customers to maximize sales for the vendors. I go through Eastern Market on most Sundays and have always found it to be an energizing place to connect with local vendors, pick up food items that may be hard to find elsewhere, and meet local artists. My highlights from my million visits here: -FOOD: During the warm season, there are a bunch of produce vendors outside under tents selling local fruits and veggies. The sales people are often directly connected to the farm, which is cool. Inside the market building itself, there is a treasure trove of everything from blueberry scones (that are SO good from the bakery on the far left side of the market) to homemade pastas and sauces to mambo sauce to fresh meat and produce. There is a nice lady that sells , Korean dumplings, near the far left end. And Eden and her colleagues at the first stand when you enter the center doors are always a welcoming group. -ART: About three years ago, I was walking around outside Eastern Market and came upon a lady who painted gorgeous maps of D.C. I had noted her information down but misplaced it, and for almost two years was looking for "the awesome map lady." Somehow, I kept missing her at the Market but then saw one of her maps one day and immediately went to have a piece made for my living room. Mary Belcher is just wonderful and I'm so happy to have a truly local piece of art in my home! -EVERYTHING ELSE: There's all sorts of stuff over here, so you should visit Eastern Market. We came here on a Saturday afternoon. It was a little rainy and a little chilly so I'm sure we didn't see it to it's fullest. However, I was still surprised at all the different vendors we saw. We saw tons of things being sold outside such as vegetables, meats, fruits, scarves, clothes, and tons of different local art of all kinds, painting, sculptures, and photography. The inside was where it was at! They have a market which has a florist, fish counters, butcher, fresh bakery and more! We wanted to eat at Market Lunch which is a tiny restaurant inside but we found that it was completely packed, and very very tiny. It was just a counter really. I'll definitely be back next time. My Northern Market would like to meet your Southern Market, but that's another story. There's also the "Intern Market" which is where politicians (such as Clinton) go to meet interns (such as oh is that the time I better get on with my review). The Eastern Market is a sacred place for me. I don't just mean the market halls themselves, but everything in and around them, up and down the nearby well-to-do quirky streets of Capitol Hill. The whole area is a fair of trinkets and foods and awesomeness. The Salvadoran place (Tortilla Cafe) is especially awesome, as are the crepes and donuts and Brown Butter Pudding at some of the awesome stands just to the North of the market. Avoid the expensive lemonades being sold to the south of the market - they are not worth the money and are poorly made. Tourist trap alert. If you have a couple of days in DC, make sure you include Eastern Market on your itinerary. The reason it's sacred is that when I was in my teens, and first came to DC, I came here. I ate at a Russian deli which is now the Salvadoran place. I wandered around and dreamed of living in the USA. It seems like a lifetime ago. I can barely remember what it felt like to be that person. So the whole area is full of ghosts and bittersweet distant creepy fading memories for me. I'll always love it here. read more

It was a really cold and windy day, might be better to go when it's nice out because so much of it is outside. The inside part is really cute and it reminds me of some of my favorite markets in London. They have great fresh fish, a restaurant, little food stands and fresh meats. Outside they have produce and fun retailers. There was an adorable little flower shop inside too. The surrounding area is really up & coming with great food and fun things to do! The Eastern Market is a wonderful mixed open-and-indoor market covering a few square blocks. During the colder months many of the outdoor vendors become scarce, but every weekend there's almost always a handful of fresh vegetable, fruit, and vendor kiosks - and in the spring through fall, it's a packed market every weekend. The indoor market is year round and largely caters to butchers, poultry, and seafood, but you'll also find fresh vegetables, pastries, bread, cakes, and a variety of "street food" options. When the weather turns warmer the market expands, taking over a few adjacent streets every weekend. The outdoor vendors include everything from art, to churros, to clothing, coffee, and of course... amazing local fresh fruit and vegetables! Definitely one of the best DC "farmers markets," especially due to the indoor market that makes it an excellent, year-round presence. read more

It is local happenings like the Eastern Market that make me want to spend more time in DC. If I were ever a resident, I am pretty confident I'd be here every weekend. Even then, I have a feeling I still wouldn't be able to hit every stall in this gigantic farmer's market. The market appeals to the interests of all who visit. There is food, entertainment, gift shopping, and locally made / locally sourced products of all kinds. Whether its a family fun affair, a date destination, or simply an errand run, there is no occasion too great for a visit to the Eastern Market. To everyone's benefit, there is food in every direction. Whether it's fresh produce from the outskirts of Virginia, sweet desserts, breakfast / lunch hot food, or even some of the freshest seafood from the Atlantic, it's more than likely here. Organic, artisanal edibles? You bet. Anytime is a good time to go, but I think the spring and summer time are best. It usually means there will an outdoor and indoor facility for plenty of additional vendors. Be sure to bring plenty of cash and leave some time to be able to browse the aisles. Sadly, for the longest time, I only knew Eastern Market to be a stop on Metro's Orange Line. Once I learned about Eastern Market I was very interested in checking it out. Additionally, on the weekends Eastern Market is also surrounded by a "Flea Market" but to me its more like a street fair. This review covers the indoor market, outdoor market and weekend flea market. Here is what you can find inside at Eastern Market: - A charming historic brick building dating back to 1873 - A long line of hungry diners waiting for a sit down meal at Market Lunch. - Impeccable service and mouth watering dairy products from the Cheese Mongers at Bowers Fancy Dairy Products - Bagels, cookies, pies and pastries at Fine Sweet Shop - Local seafood, beautiful flowers and meat. Lots, and lots of meats. - Clean bathrooms On the weekends, the "outdoor market" and Flea Market includes a diverse array of vendors. The outdoor market basically refers to the covered pavilions immediately outside the market whereas the flea market refers to the tents and stalls on the street surrounding the market grounds. Outside you will find lots of local produce, art and jewelry. Other items you can find here are vintage maps, smocked children's dresses, windows repurposed into mirrors, soaps and some supposedly amazing crepes. So yes, its eclectic. Thus far, my favorite finds have been acrylic paintings and prints of local scenes by artist Joseph Harrison Snyder and sparkling sea glass and marble jewelry by jeweler/artist Amy Marx. If you go to Eastern Market, be sure to walk around to the back side, near the adjacent aquatic center and check out those food vendors too. There is a crepes stand, donut stand and an option for fried shrimp, all of which looked and smelled so awesome. Something that is nice about Eastern Market is the opportunity to support local businesses. I loved seeing lots of local Maryland produce and better yet, smelling it. Yes, it is peach season! Parking here is tough, even for the best parallel parkers, but the Metro stop is a short walk away. read more

I love Eastern Market! We used to live in the area in the late 90's and the mid 2000's. You get to know the local vendors and not only do you feel like you are in a European market but you are getting high quality foods right near your home. Some of the prices for produce can be a little higher than your local grocery store but they probably taste much better as they are grown in a local's farm. I love the selection of sausages, meats and cheeses. They also have fancy pastas, a bakery, a florist, even seafood. They also have a place to grab breakfast and lunch right across from the seafood vendor. This is the kind of place you go to daily when you live there ( I did!) There are so many different stalls here with meats, fruits, vegetables, flowers and all other sorts of items you might want to buy. There are also places to sit and eat here and they seem to always be busy. I really like coming here on the weekends since there's a farmers' market and lots of food trucks. There are tons and tons of vendors selling local art and all the things I mentioned above and everyone has always been helpful and very friendly. I went today with my boyfriend. It was cold ish outside, but there were quite a few booths outside and plenty in the inside. We walked around and saw souvenirs booths lined on the side of the building. As we headed to the end of the outside booths, there is a square plaza with food cart. Inside, many jewelry booths were having 50% off. I ended up not buying any of the jewelry though, but there was a booth that had very sophisticated necklaces and I thought they were so pretty. Inside, there are fresh raw meat, fruits, flowers, and everything you need to buy to cook a delicious meal at home. We ended up getting a Mediterranean chicken pastry. They will put it in a mini oven to heat it up and was willing to leave it in there longer to make it crispy. Overall, it was a neat place to check out! What a great market in the heart of Capitol Hill! I was just in DC for a few days - and our airbnb was walking distance to Eastern Market, so we had to check it out! And we loved it. Inside the market, there's a small diner and stands of merchants: cheese, meats, fresh pastas, eggs, flowers, and more! Last weekend, we headed out for an afternoon at Eastern Market. The inside of the building mostly contains vendors that sell meat, seafood, pastas, flowers, baked goods, etc. There is also a eatery called Market Lunch, which is quite popular (but we didn't give it a try). The line at Market Lunch fluctuated throughout the day, from somewhat short to very long. The inside of the building also contains bathrooms, which weren't as dirty as I expected, but still not the cleanest place in the world. Immediately outside the building, there are various stalls that mostly sell produce. They have delicious samples of the produce cut up for you to try, and I even scored a sample of delicious hot cider. The farther away you get from the building, the less produce is being sold, and more arts and crafts. The stalls included jewelry, paintings and photographs, sunglasses, scarves, pottery, wooden toys, purses and wallets, and the like. On the other side of the building, there is a cluster of food carts (such as pretzels, pickles, crepes, soul food, kettle corn, and more). The flea market next door was fun- we saw gorgeous tablecloths, a whole stand selling lavendar-themed items, a stand with antique Life covers and advertisements, and another stand selling only broaches. Overall, it was slightly more commercial than we were hoping for (we were hoping it would be a bit more flea market and antiques compared to booths of people hawking cheap sunglasses and expensive clothes). However, we still had a fantastic afternoon and left significantly poorer and fuller. Two thumbs up! read more

Great public market that have a number of vendors selling meats, seafood, and some produce (although I would suggest not getting your fresh produce and fruits at the vendors indoors as the ones that sets up stalls outside on Saturday and Sundays are much much better and indefinitely fresher!). The vendors indoors are usually fair game when it comes to fresh meat and seafood, but it really depends on the day and time you go (take a look at the picture for an example of their prices). There are definitely times when you can find better and fresher deals at say, Whole Foods or even the nearby Trader Joe's, just saying. Great place to take non-locals during their visit to DC, but an equally great place to wander around if you're a District local if you're around Capitol Hill. The streets right out (also right out the Eastern Market Metro stop) come to life on the weekends and is a great place for a weekend coffee, pastry and/or bite to eat. I heard about this place and decided that I needed to stop by for a visit. I love farmer's markets and the ones back home are on the small side and they're all outdoors. I live in Houston and it gets hot and humid, which takes a bit out of the whole experience, not to mention the lack of variety. We took the Metro over and got distracted by the street vendors (handmade goods, Turkish towels, potted herbs, flowers, donuts, etc.) for the weekend flea market before we finally headed inside. It was a bit smaller than I expected and I'm not sure if the street stands are always there or if it was just because it was the weekend, but the inside had a "dessert" vendor (I was sorely tempted by their pies), fresh pasta (also sorely tempted but wouldn't be able to go home right away so sadly opted out), meats (we're vegetarian so we avoided those), and fresh veggies and fruit. The further in you walked, you could see this sit down place that I'm not sure of the name but they had a definite line. I decided it was time for brunch. The man taking our orders was very enthusiastic and took his time with each customer, despite the line. This may be a good or bad thing, but I decided that it was more of the former. I'm vegetarian but don't eat onion, garlic, leeks, or chives (even in powdered form) so I asked him a series of questions before settling on their asparagus omelette with the sides of spicy grits (grits, salt, pepper, Monterrey jack cheese, butter) and the buttered/toasted bread and the freshly squeezed orange juice. It came up to be around $10 and was a pretty good size. Note: they only accept cash. They don't have a lot of seating in the immediate area so we were lead to the side room to share a table with others. The omelette had diced tomatoes in addition to the asparagus. I thought it was pretty good. The grits were fluffy, well-seasoned, and awesome. The toasted bread was already lightly buttered and perfectly toasted; I quite enjoyed them. It was simple fare but they did the job and hit the spot. My friend who got the shrimp and grits loved it and actually wanted to return for lunch. My sister also got their blueberry buckwheat pancakes of which I partook in the form of a bite; perfectly fluffy and delicious (but you have to pay extra for the maple syrup). All in all, the entire indoor Market was a bit underwhelming, but the food was pretty good (perhaps I could try one of the pies that I spotted first). I wouldn't mind returning again later on the trip if I find myself there again. If I lived in the area, I would definitely return for the market part of it (and the food). read more

One or two restaurants, and tons of shops with meat, cheese, pastries, produce, etc. Well laid out, reasonable prices, easy to get to from the Metro. I had hoped for more restaurants inside, but there are plenty in the area. I got some snacks for later and headed somewhere else to eat. Was expecting a lot more but was quite disappointed... few nice stores around the market with a nice variety. So wanted to love the churros but was disappointed. Have to tell ya that the best is still in Southern California. Sigh... In the market it was also quite small and not much of a variety. Nothing really stood out. Vibe was missing in there. I visit Eastern Market almost every week and weekend. It is the hub of my neighborhood and life. And it lives up to the promise completely as a key to the fabric of our community. Inside the Market itself is Market Lunch, a breakfast and lunch counter. It's cash only but it's the best breakfast in the city. I recommend the blueberry pancakes and bacon. Congressmen and construction workers, families, everyone gathers there for breakfast. I witnessed a father proudly showing his kids the Market Lunch for the first time. It's a staple. The Market also has a florist, fish counter, poultry butcher, diary (cash only), two grovers, a prepared foods counter with tons of fresh noodles--best in the city both for variety and flavors--a butcher, another butcher with slightly different cuts of meat, and a bakery. There are prepared foods as well. It's really a one-stop shop for everything you need. It's like a fancy grocery store but better! On the weekends the market hosts farmers and a flea market. The market is incredible. The farmers have every variety of fresh vegetables and fruit all year. The market goes off rain or shine every weekend of the year, although if the weather is truly horrible there are less vendors. The only drawback of the market is that it is not organic foods. read more
