The staff and the students at EMU are mostly really good. I like how diverse the University was. That said, the biggest issue that I have had with EMU when I was there between 2012 to 2016 is that their Board of Regents operate like a bunch of corrupt slimeballs and that hasn't changed since. read more

I am a student of Eastern and finally graduated. This was no easy feat, and took me a bit longer than anticipated, but I did it. I started here as a full time student living on campus in the dorms immediately after high school with a meal plan and no car. I didn't finish my degree with 2 classes left and joined the workforce. Eventually, years later I returned to complete my schooling and finally graduated. I will list what I know as a young high school student, and as an adult commuting, since I have experience in both situations. Eastern has plenty of housing available throughout campus for people who need it. They have a nice student union where you can sit and study, eat or hang out if you have a large gap of time between classes. As a returning student, I found it reasonably easy to navigate my way back into campus with doing all the paperwork and readmitting myself. The process was easy and simple, but should be done far in advance so you can get into the classes that you need. Don't do this the day before. Instructors were qualified and accessible. Some are harder than others, some have book and materials required for class, some do not. It really depends on your program and how far along you are in your degree. This is life. Each major is different, but this is college, so different things are to be expected. Eastern has a really great online program that allows students to submit assignments and read lectures (depending on the professor) online via their website. It's easy to navigate, and made commuting so much easier. I didn't have to attend class in person twice a week like I did back in the day. It's called a hybrid program. you show up for one class and the other half of the class is online, allowing you to do assignments from home. Each instructor and major is different and there are some classes that you must show up for in person and have very little online involvement. Others are heavier on the in class work, and lighter with the online stuff. It really depends on the instructor and what your major is. I loved the hybrid format, since it meant I didn't have to show up as much, and could do stuff from home. The downside to Eastern is the parking situation. It has become very expensive and because the school contracted it out to a private outside company. This is causing a huge uproar on campus, and people are getting parking tickets that should not. Now, all of the pay lots are automated and if you don't have a charge card or debit card, you are not going to get out. It used to be a $1.50 an hour. Not anymore. I think it's a $5 flat fee per hour or whatnot regardless of how long you are there. Also, the parking hang tags here are absurdly expensive. I don't know how any of the students can afford to park who have cars full time on campus. Back when I was a student, they had different "levels" of parking tags. The most expensive one was for full time students who either lived on campus with a car, or commuted full time during the day with a full class load. They were there the most money. Then they had part time tags, for people who were only there like 2 days a week, and the cheapest was the evening students who came in for night classes. Now, they don't care if you are taking one night class or live full time on campus. It's $165 a semester to park, regardless. I was on campus once a week for one class, and it would have still been $165. For one stinking class, once a week! They offer a shuttle that you can park off campus and come into school on, but that adds about 30 minutes to your commute, since you have to park at the football stadium, and get dropped off at their designated points, then walk to your building. That runs $30, but they keep raising the prices on those as well/ My only other complaint is that sometimes dealing with administrative stuff here outside of the classroom can be frustrating and drag on. Staff is readily accessible, but some are easier to deal with than others. For example, my graduation auditor was a wicked crotch who was miserable to deal with. But, my program advisers were awesome and easy to reach. Aside from my graduation auditor, I was always able to get stuff accomplished, even if it wasn't on the timeline I preferred. Overall I loved Eastern, and it was worth the stress of getting my degree. They made it easy as a young high school student and as a working adult who commuted. Thank you Eastern, you really let me get my degree done, and made it worth it, even with the few setbacks I had. read more

I took a bike ride today through the campus of Eastern Michigan University in the city of Ypsilanti, about 35 miles west of Detroit. The university's 122 buildings are spread across an 800 acre campus and are comprised of many different architectural styles. It opened during the Civil War in 1853 and has 23,000 full time students. I got good a enjoyable workout riding through the moderately hilly campus with plenty of mature trees providing shade. EMU's 'Ypsi' campus is a great place to enjoy a leisurely summer bike ride. read more

Horrible University. They just took $2600 of my sons hard earned money and will not credit him for a class they alleged he did not cancel in time. 12 hours late they claim????? My son says it was a technical issue on their part. No credit, no refund, no discussion. How can this be? To treat a new student like this? Shame on EMU.....I would recommend you go somewhere else. Eastern Michigan University is a great place to visit.  They also offer a wide variety of educational choices in the arena of higher education.  The campus is somewhat sprawling so it is hard to navigate for some by foot.  Their interior common areas are well kept up.  Their food cafeteria, at least the one I visited on Oakwood is well appointed.  The difficulty, however, is that during times when classes are not in session the only thing that is open is Starbucks.  That's okay, however, it is expensive and offers a limited set of nutritional choices.  Not ideal for college students nor faculty and staff. The grounds are well kept up in general - for example the lake is attractive and contains a fountain.  The appearance, however, because of this 'classic' presentation from what appears to be the 1960's is the general exclusion of wildlife with the exception of a permanent flock of Canada Geese which have apparently abandoned the practice of migration in exchange for ice free water and free food. When I was there last there was a large irrigation wheel left against a tree.  It appeared dangerous and was unsightly.  The last criticism I have to offer is in regards to the parking fees.  They are excessive and frequent.  As public transportation to the area is sporadic and inefficient the major mode of transport is personal car.  The parking fees are just another expense that makes it clear that some higher learning will not be provided without higher prices. read more

honestly I feel like I am wasting money; do not believe the brochures.. I came to eastern to save a bit of money and to stay close to home. after being here for 2 weeks i am not sure if i want to stay. I paid $198 for a parking pass just to only park in 2/3 areas provided for "resident students." like i've said i've been here for 2 weeks and have been parking in the same spot everyday; tell me why i leave campus for labor day weekend and come back tuesday to park in the same spot i've been parking in and was charged $28 for parking in a "restricted zone." and since the parking space i'm supposed to be in is closed. i have to park all the way down the hill and walk all the way back up to get to my dorm. next on the list is the food. i have a meal plan that provides 3 swipes a day and $100 flex money. i go to this burger place to see what it's about and it was actually good. downsides are that some things on the menu don't come with the meal plan, so i'd have to use flex or real money AND if my meal was $10.38, my meal plan only covers $9 of that so i have to pay another $1.38 or use another swipe. why not just cover my whole meal with the first swipe?? and it's like this at EVERY dining hall. there's only a few places i enjoy eating at, but it's all unhealthy. i cant eat hamburgers, pizza, and fries everyday. so now on top of paying everything else u need to buy your own groceries to cook meals for yourself so you won't get sick off of eating too much grease. oh and don't go to the commons for food, it's disgusting and cold; cookies were good tho! next is classes. you're paying over $150 on textbooks bc emu decides that they want to be different and make their own textbooks and charge u hella money for them. every freshman is required to take writing 101; this class requires a textbook called understanding rhetoric. the book is $89 plus taxes comes out to $95.12. there is a free version online, but the school tricks you into thinking you have to buy one with the title label "3rd emu edition." it's literally the exact same as the 2nd edition. psychology teachers claim they care about your mental health, then gives u a butt load of assignments. sorry that was random, but psychology is really kicking my butt. oh did i mention that the teachers are going on STRIKE??? yeah check out some articles on that. a lot of people don't have classes that they've PAID for. the dorms r next. the school has all this money, but can't afford to put ac in the dorms??? i recommend getting a metal fan since portable acs are not allowed in the dorms. the showers are DEADLY, the pressure is so high, it makes ur chest hurt and turn red. and then some dorm buildings don't even have shower heads!! so you have to stand in an uncomfortable position to rinse off everyday. if u live in the towers (pittman, hoyt, hill) prepare to hear police cars going off all night. other than they the events r cool ig. i want to be able to enjoy my college experience. ik it's only been my second week and every college has there problems, but i just feel like i'm being scammed. all this money into school and you can't even treat your students good? read more

ParkEMU is an uncompassionate organization which offers no practical means, policy or reasonableness in regards to assisting parents and families move their students on and off campus. Their posted policy online (not at lots) is to harass parents and families by issuing citations regardless of whether their procedures were followed. Forcing students and families to needlessly waste time to appeal citations. EMUs Office of the President supports these practices and is equally unwilling to show compassion and lienancy nor admit to the unreasonableness and irrationalness of EMUs unloading and loading policies. read more

We were at their convocation center (799 N.Hewitt) for a high school graduation. There was ample parking for those who arrived early, but those who came later had to park pretty far away. To start, the entry into the center was disorganized and security was a mess. They did try to screen everyone with their metal detectors and use guards to dig through bags. This process took forever and it was pouring outside so people were getting totally drenched outside. The wait to get inside was over 30 minutes long and it was horrible trying to get in. Once inside it's chaos, you don't know where you are at until you are inside and it's a battle for seats. The AV and lights were fine, but once the ceremony was over they walked all the kids into the rain and were not let back into find their families . None of them had umbrellas because they were walked out immediately in caps and gowns and formal wear. Everyone's formal clothes were ruined. We were drenched trying to find our group and it was a total nightmare. The security guards were rude and obnoxious, they didn't let the kids go back to find their families and it was cold, dark and pouring. There were senior citizens with walkers and canes getting pushed over trying to get in and out of the building and yelled at by the security. Parents who had to get the car couldn't find their kids or go back in. The whole place was poorly lit. It was a severe thunderstorm out with heavy downfall. They had zero crowd management skills what so ever. I would not recommend renting this place for events unless they can get their crowd management situation and think about what the customer experience should be. What a way to ruin an important family and child's milestone by having the graduation ceremony at this place. read more

Sophomore, been here for a year now. I grew up in Ann Arbor. I was going to transfer to Michigan state out of WCC, but half of my credits didn't transfer + I was required to live on campus for 2 years which I couldn't afford -- so I ended up here. I literally went to WCC just to avoid going to this dump college. When I found out I had no other choice than to transfer here, I felt like a complete loser with all my classmates from high school going to amazing colleges and getting the real experience. the professors are great and helpful, so far I liked every one I've had. But there's no life at this school, it's like a zombie apocalypse. There's no one to speak to, nothing going on at all, no clubs, no sports events, no nothing. I just go to class and go back home. I haven't made a single friend being here. I don't live in the dorms, but they're incredibly tiny, dirty and filthy. Finding a parking spot is also a chore. Rape rates are high on campus. both Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti are horrible towns as well, tiny, one street with two shops, and that's it (Ann arbor has a lot of great restaurants though, I'll give it that) umich students are rude, leftist, arrogant and hypocritical. don't even bother with Michigan. Don't go to school here, avoid it at all cost. Can't wait to leave. read more

Eastern Michigan University is a great university, despite some of its past controversies. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, it is true that the EMU administration has had its share of corruption in the past. However, the members involved in these scandals have since been removed and the new president, Susan Martin is showing a great deal of promise. Having been an undergraduate and graduate student here, I can confidently say, EMU delivers the way any major university is expected to deliver. EMU has nationally renowned programs such as: historic preservation, GIS, education, and international business. The campus is beautiful, with a landscape dotted with a good mixture of classic and modern architecture. The Halle Library has a large archive of literature, state-of-the-art computers, and even a cafe. The Student Center has a good variety of restaurants, an arcade, a theater, and a nice mini piano lounge. The parking...well they could use a few more parking lots actually. The university also has many departments that cater to students. Departments such as: SEEUS, which provides campus safety; VISION, which sets-up charity opportunities for students who wants to contribute to the community; Campus Life create events like concerts and shows; the HLC helps students succeed by offering tutor and supplemental instruction services; and Career Services help students find employment. In terms of education, I will personally say that I am proud of the education I received at EMU. In particular, the education I received from the Department of Geography. In fact, that department taught me so much that it inspired me to pursue a graduate degree so that I could one day teach geography at the college level myself. Eastern Michigan University is not the best university, but I believe students will still be proud to go there. read more

There are thousands of open parking spots and not one available for use without ridiculous parking rate..why?? Is student tuition not expensive enough.. I only have class on campus in the evenings 7 times this semester my options are 180 parking pass, $120 in timed parking or park miles away from campus in order to get to class. pretty disappointed, I hope this could change about this school, i think it has potential but it needs to help students out rather than make it more financially suffocating. read more

I graduated from EMU in 2010, while many of my high school friends went of to Michigan or Michigan State I kinda felt like a loser coming here. That changed after one semester when I realized life is what you make of it and how you use the education you are provided with. I lived on campus although my home was 20 minutes away, I was active in student life going to football games and being an orientation assistant my whole college career. Some people complain it's un-safe, well most of the crimes that happen are to people who don't use common sense... Don't text on your phone in a rough neighborhood at 3am, you will be a target! Lock the door to your dorm if you step out for a minute or an hour, etc... Ypsi is a pretty cool town too, you have many hangouts close to campus and if you're looking for more, well your in luck, Ann Arbor is 10 minutes away. I'm now 3 years into my career after graduation and yes people aren't always sure where I went to school, but I've still gotten 2 promotions and the things I learned with my finance degree continue to pay off to this day. EMU students are blue collar hard workers, we don't think we're better than anyone and we work hard to get ahead. Many of my classmates worked full-time outside of class and that experience translated into their course work. I am more and more excited for the campus, President Martin is investing a lot of capital into new buildings and the sports teams are constantly improving. Not to mention you can hand feed all of the campuses friendly squirrels! read more

I've attended universities large and small, including U of M, but I believe Eastern gets a bad rap for a few obvious reasons. 1- Their sports programs are pretty lackluster and they definitely under-perform for a college of nearly 25,000 students. 2- Let's face it folks, Ypsilanti is a smoking hole in the ground. I honestly can't stand the city, and it's gone from bad to worse in the last 5-10 years. And by the way, bus stops on the campus hurt this situation, they don't help it. 3- You won't get a true "campus" experience here for the most part. Don't get me wrong, the main campus is beautiful and expanding every year, but if you're looking for the traditional campus experience here- dorm rooms, fraternaties, and other rites of passage- EMU will pale in comparrison to a lot of other colleges, as this is primarily for local students and commuters. 4- It's hard to compete with U of M. They seem to rank in the top for half the programs in existence, so it's really not that surprising that people would forget Eastern is there, 10 minutes away. 5- Lack of some professional associations... a law school or medical school would go a long way to building some credibility. Hey, if Wayne State can do it, they can. Like any college, I really do believe you will get out of it what you put into it. Some of their programs are really good, like their top ranked business school, forensics program, and they are pretty solid for education programs. But don't expect people to blown away if you walk out of here with a liberal arts degree... I'm not knocking people who have, I'm just illustrating that some aspects are more compelling than others. I bet if the average person looked, they'd be pretty surprised to see where Eastern does rank statewide and nationally in some fields. I'm considering grad school there, but one of the things that is holding me back is both distance and the city. I found the area surrounding the campus to be pretty insufferable, and lacking in a lot of basic things I'd like to see on campus. It's also cheaper than many other universities. And when you're not some rich east coast kid having the bill for the education footed by their parents or you're not relying on grants or loans, that can make a difference. It's far from the most glamorous choice, but I'm proud of my association with EMU and felt sufficiently educated by the majority of classes in the COB. I do strongly agree with Mariah's comments about EMU vs. say UM. Having attended both schools, the difference I noticed between the two wasn't so much classes or faculty, as much as the competitiveness of the students. UM has a lot more leaders and driven students, which at times made EMU feel a bit like highschool. read more

I was a graduate student at EMU a few years ago, where I received my MA in Arts Administration. Sometimes I think that EMU gets somewhat eclipsed for both funding and attention because it is geographically so close to the University of Michigan. However, their new president really seems to be making an effort to raise EMU's profile (in a good way), which they certainly need after a few recent bumps/scandals. In terms of getting a solid education -- here was my experience: Eastern was not as competitive as U of M, but was still a really solid school (and was also far more affordable and adaptable to someone who had to work while going to school). I had small class sizes, thoughtful discussions, and almost every single one of my profs was great or at the least, very helpful and invested in teaching. There was one exception -- one terrible prof. in the business school who gets the distinction of having taught the worst class I have ever attended/suffered through. It was an online class, and I don't think that the instructor realized that a lot of the students did not speak English as a first language, and seemed pretty dismissive of them. It was frustrating to watch. My profs often had a lot of real-world experience, which I valued. Sure, there were students in some of my classes who slacked off. However, if you were truly interested in the material and motivated to learn, there were plenty of opportunities to explore -- on campus and off. As a commuting student (I worked FT while working on my degree), the parking situation, however, was terrible. Since I knew Ypsi pretty well, I found a few ways around it, but there simply has to be a better way to manage the parking on campus, particularly for evening students who are often racing to get to class directly from work. read more

As a current senior at EMU (I transferred back in Fall of 2013), I love this school! It was hard getting used to the 4-year university setting at first but now I love it! It is a smaller campus than you think, despite maps making it look freaking huge and it is quite easy to get around. I personally love living in the dorms and have done so since last year. I happen to live in one of the Honors dorms so it is relatively quiet - but there are nights where it can get loud outside my window and I've heard the occasional yelling student out there doing who knows what. The only thing I don't like is the constant stream of "Timely Warning" emails which tells me that campus security needs work. I've seen lots of campus security cars near dorms and such but they are often empty... which is odd. There are plenty of good things though! Food on campus is great (The Commons is the best by far - just avoid the Asian food because it is gross as hell) and there are lots of places that deliver to dorms such as Jimmy Johns! It can be a bit spooky at night on campus and there is an escort service (called SEEUS) that can walk students to and from just about anywhere on campus to keep you safe which I've used many times. The people who say EMU isn't safe are exaggerating. I have felt very safe on-campus. Just travel with friends at night and be aware of your surroundings. The dorms are lots of fun to live in and the rooms are nice. I have a single room which means more space and my own bathroom! :D The RA's are really nice in the dorms too and there are all sorts of programs at the dorms to attend. I recently attended one on self-defense led by one of the campus police officers. I recommend EMU as a university wholeheartedly, especially for Creative Writing students or those seeking a library science degree as EMU is one of few colleges that offers such a degree at the graduate level. read more

I went here... for two degrees, and completed both. The actual education is solid, but the reason I leave two stars is because I've had my Master's for over a year, and cannot find a job. I signed up for their Handshake site and its a joke, more than half of the jobs are bogus and of the rest, many only require a HS Diploma. Just to get on that site, they make you put your resume into a long outdated format. Its terrible. I have ZERO career prospects but owe over a hundred grand for the education. They should really be ashamed of themselves. There is no real help to work on resume's either. I would NOT recommend going here unless you are merely trying to get better skills for a career you already have going into it. I'm back at WCC now, because they have TONS of career help. read more

I have been attending Eastern Michigan University for four years, and within this time, there have been so many great classes offered by wonderful professors. Being a communication major, every single one of my teachers has been helpful in allowing me to grow and learn as a student. There are many people to go to for academic funding, or how to transition into professional settings after college. Furthermore, I received a decent scholarship for my four-year degree. I took part in a study abroad program where I got the chance to visit the UK and continue my education there. I have made long-lasting friendships and memories. On the other hand, the administration is a huge concern for me. I have personally witnessed fantastic people lose their jobs because of "budget cuts." Meanwhile, all of the money goes towards athletic upgrades, hoping to increase the attendance at sporting events. Although this is good in theory, EMU sports teams have never been well known and ticket sales are very low compared to the neighboring school, University of Michigan. This means the spending money neglects the 95% of students who don't participate in sports. Eastern fails to acknowledge they are a commuter school and parking spaces are a high demand. Tuition and other fees continue to rise, while the biggest problems remain unsolved. I feel really disconnected from the higher up administration and question a lot of the motives this school has. Although my review for teachers and classes is much higher, I sadly place EMU low on an overall rating based on how big of an impact the school funding has had on my experience. read more

Worst school ever! It's a rip off, not worth the money you put into it. It does not pay off in the long run. There is no city or university spirit or experience... and it most likely will not land you a great job. Rape/violence/murder on campus is high. They withhold credit if you do not finish in four years and change programs constantly, so your major may have to change. They are horrible at sending out transcripts. No company outside of Michigan has heard of them. My advise... leave Michigan! read more

Eastern Michigan University was a nightmare... the worst college that was ever impacted by covid because the teachers do not give a single crap about you unless it is a psychology teacher. All the other ones will legit let you fail if you get covid and it's all your fault when their website doesn't work All semester for you despite all the emails and the help you reached out for to the school itself and the teachers. I passed one class and that was psychology 101 with a B. All my other classes I failed due to me testing positive for covid the week before finals. I had emailed all my teachers prior about me not being able to make it that week due to covid and a lot just said get better. I emailed them the day of finals because nobody but my psychology teacher took the time to make a plan with me for my finals despite my email saying I'm not making it finals week. My speech teacher literally told me there was nothing she could do and I have to figure it out even though the final was a speech and I had already submitted the draft for it and all I needed to do was present. She did not let me record and present when I was sick with covid for my exam. My math teacher had 2 websites she used and she would never post to canvas and it would never show up even if she did. All semester I contacted her about it. read more

Currently running a parking scheme where they fill the potential student parking with excessive pay lots leaving student late for class, not being able to park at all, or having to pay for their many pay lots that are always empty. Upsetting that after you pay for an expensive parking pass you still have to pay for a pay lot or rack up parking tickets. read more

I am so disappointed in this school. One of the promises they make to incoming students is to be an advocate for and to support students that struggle with mental illness. I was a student at Eastern Michigan University this past school year and struggled tremendously with my own mental health. I was hospitalized around winter break for my health. I recuperated and returned to school in January but after a few weeks into the semester I experienced a major life change that drastically affected my mental state. Throughout the time that I was struggling I contacted Eastern Michigan's Mental Health center numerous times and never received any support with my classes or professors. I got behind in classwork and realized I would not be able to continue so I decided it was best for me to withdrawal from my classes and I did so within the allowed time frame to receive partial reimbursement. I didn't hear from anyone by the end of the semester so I called, emailed and stopped by to find out what the status of my reimbursement was. Not only did I not find out but they told me to stop contacting them and that they would get in touch with me regarding a decision. I went to the mental health support department at Eastern for support for my cause and to help me get partial reimbursement for my classes that I had not finished and withdrew from according to their policies. What I got was absolutely NO response OR support. I felt so alone when I was supposed to feel like I was a part of a supportive community and that the school understood the struggles people with mental health go through. That is what they claimed before I applied, which was a large factor in me choosing the school. But that's not what I got. It has taken me a long time to recover from not only my initial struggles but this lack of support and going unanswered for so long. I just found out, six months later, that they denied me any reimbursement whatsoever. So this has also created a financial burden and has helped me decide I will not return to this school even though I had planned to. I do not recommend this school to anyone because the administration is not in touch, nor do they try to be in touch with the student body. This school has become concerned only with money and not the well being and education of it's students. I am extremely disappointed and I fear that anyone else in a similar situation will be too. read more

As a graduate of this great university (Bachelor of science in Social Studies with a minor in History), i of course loved it, but EMU is truthfully one of those places that you make it what you want. I think the rep on Emu is that it's a party school, but in my opinion its not (despite maybe about 10 bars, 5 to six liquor stores in a mile radius, it just doesn't have the same ump as maybe south university for u of m). The classes are a mixed bag, i have had extremely hard ones and easy ones ( I'm talking about the ones that i only showed up one time and got an A). I like the fact that the sporting events are free for the students, the campus is really in one location and not spread out like a U of M or a MSU. I hated Eastern my freshman year. Now I don't think it's so bad. Of course we have kinks and stuff that need to be worked out. I do think they need to work on upgrading the other dorms and not just the freshman ones. This is more of a commuter type school so campus is completely dead on weekends. You won't get typical college experience here. I have yet to find a club that interests me. But I have picky interests. Come visit and I mean visit with an actual student! Don't visit with the campus tours they're likely to set those up on a Friday when campus is dead. read more

I attended EMU for 5 years and did not graduate. By choice. I found a REAL university and got a valuable education. I even learned things. But not here. If you liked high school and enjoy wasting time and money, you might fit in here. (don't forget the seating charts) If you use/abuse drugs or alcohol, you'll like it here. If you would rather pass a test by regurgitating a poorly presented slide show than actually learning and proving it, go here. If you enjoy being lied to, mislead, manipulated, deceived, brainwashed, peer pressured, betrayed, and/or would like to become a mindless automaton, go ahead. If you want all your stuff stolen and your friends mugged, c'mon down. If you would like to find yourself in the middle of a race war, Ypsilanti is for you. Eastern Michigan University is a gem. I recieved a quality education that i am very proud of. EMU is a big school that provides a lot of academic oppurtunities and has a beautiful campus. If i had to choose i would definitely pick Eastern Michigan again. Highly recommended. read more

The people with which I interacted at EMU were very nice. The school was very pretty with lots of old brick buildings. I conducted my training in the library in a fairly standard computer training room. I liked that the projector projected on two screens, which made it easy for the students to see, but many of the computers faced a wall, so those students had their backs to the screen and white boards. There were a number of eateries nearby, and the neighborhood was nice enough. I went down the road a bit, and it seemed a bit dilapidated, but in general, it all seemed fine. The main office building was old and creaky. I think it could probably use some updates, and it wasn't very easy to navigate. In general, though, I enjoyed EMU. read more

I experienced a lot of discrimination at this college all around due to my being transgendered, and was ultimately run out of the school. I had one roommate that refused to share the code for the router in our dorm room, one roommate complained about my late night conversations with my girlfriend, when she had lots of loud late night hookups with her roommate. I was elected to a leadership role for my dormitory but eventually run out by student and staff oversight committee for attending a Transgender Day of Remembrance Ceremony on a meeting day, that I had requested off in advance. I was told that I would be put on a board for pursuing adding trans inclusive options to the student insurance plan, but the staff and students on the health committee refused to inform me of meetings, or let me join meetings. They advertise as being a top school for education, when their academic standing as a college producing teachers has fallen way behind their peer colleges. I was during my attendance at EMU looking into possibly transferring to University of Michigan instead. However I wound up getting married and moved out of state after acceptance to U of M. I was also appalled by the exorbitant spending by the university dumping money into a failing football team and pulling funds from a championship hockey team! I used the Eastern Michigan University's bookstore to rent a book for the fist time last semester. They rented me a damaged book and then charged me for the whole book when I returned it. Whatever you do don't use them to rent textbooks. read more

People may make think you can't get the traditional college experience at eastern but that certainly is not true. There's a traditional college experience to be had here if you want it. There are tons of fraternities and sororities on campus as well as many student activities to participate in. The dorms are ok, not great. The dorms are certainly not a dump because most of them have been recently renovated. The campus overall is beautiful, particularly the southern portion and the park area. Academically, the profs at eastern are pretty challenging. I've had to really step up my game to pass classes here, even the art class I had was hard. On the negative side, the administration is suspect at best. I think the university president is trying her best but her best efforts may be hindered by suspect regents. The football team sucks mightily and are embarrassing, and the basketball team can't get out of their own way. Another negative is I think there are too many commuters. I think eastern would be better served to try to become a more residential college in the future. They promote the whole affordable angle way too much as well, especially since I believe it has little bearing on whether a serious student will choose eastern over another school especially if the tuition difference isn't that big. Overall eastern Michigan university is a good school with a beautiful campus that I would definitely attend again if I had to. If people took eastern on it's own merits, and not always look to compare it to UM and feeling inferior about it, I believe you'll have a blast and enjoy your time here. read more

Eastern has extremely helpful and caring staff, and they welcome transfer students (like myself) with minimal loss of credit.There are plenty of opportunities to get involved on campus, and I've found that so many of the students here are genuine and down to earth. Class sizes are smaller so the professors are accessible and personable. Eastern is a wonderful school and if you work hard, you will receive a quality education for a great value! read more

I transferred in because I'm a working adult and EMU is known as a commuter school, with primarily non-traditional students. It is a horrible school. They are not good for commuters or non-traditional students or poor people. AT ALL. Terrible. However, 'some' of the programs are good. The urban & regional planning program. Nursing. Mostly that's it. If you're white and smart and have money, they'll give you a full ride. If you're poor and need to work, good luck graduating in less than 5 years. I would like to say that the area is no more dangerous than any other campus in the area. Ypsilanti is a great town. read more

My complete honesty about this university. Do NOT go to this university, you will not be happy-at least I wasn't! I was there for two years before I transferred. I grew miserable while I was there, and was chronically depressed. I had some good professors and some bad professors. The people that work for EMU have really nasty dispositions. People are not friendly there. It reminds me of the hood, or the ghetto. Financial aid advisors lie straight to your face. If you have one simple question each person gives you a ready around the campus before you can even get an answer. The police department at EMU is VERY RACIST, they purposely try to harass the black student or charge them so they can get kicked out of school and may even have a record. The education is good, depending on what major you are going into. The health field is good. If I could do it all over again-IT WOULD NOT BE EMU! read more
