Stayed here for a week, price was decent which is why it even got 2 stars. The whole floor we stayed on smelled like smoke which is ironic because when you exit the elevator there's a no smoking sign so.... explain that to me please? Our room had a heater but we didn't have the controls to the heater (I'm assuming it was a central heating system and the whole building was operated with one control) so that was pretty annoying, we were freezing at some points at night and what made it worse is that the heater kept turning on and off in the middle of the night and when it did (turn on or off) it made the sound of a train running through our room and woke me up every 5 minutes or so. Didn't get good sleep at all that whole week and because of that kind of ruined my vacation. The highlights were that it was located very close to Grand Central so this helped us get around a lot easier, but with that said where in New York are you more than a few blocks from a subway station? Overall, decent place, heater REALLY bothered me and the sheets were kind of dirty, if I were to come to New York again I'd probably be willing to shell out just a bit more cash to stay at a nicer place. read more

I have been using the EastGate since 2006---3-4 times a year and find it is a great find. The staff is very nice and polite. The rooms are 2-3x's bigger then any place you could get adding $200-$250 more for the same room at other NYC hotels. I do have to address the people who rates this a 1 or 2 star--Your nuts and do not have a clue.. The beds are clean and made every day--the maid will give you extra sheer/towels. Folks if you want updated furniture because your clothes will be insulted--go some place else(REALLY) --ohh by the way most room have 2-3 closets--look at them close--that could have been your room at other hotels for this price. How smart of a tourist are you want to eat breakfast in your hotel in NYC--10 places exist within one block--you want a hotel bar--please go up a few blocks so you can pay $15 for a vodka/tonic, I can buy a weeks worth of voda and tonic for $20 the 2 of the liquor places are the street on 2nd ave. I just checked out of this hotel less than 5 hours ago and all I can say is good. The rooms are a bit dated. Maybe some new wallpaper, whatever., but it doesn't take away from the fact that this is probably one of the best buys in Manhattan for location, cost and amenities. It's a freaking apartment. A nice one. Beds are comfy. Room was super clean. Better yet, my foot swelled to the size of Ohio- I have metal in both of my feet/legs and I am older than dirt. I do still love the subway though. I realised this am that I could not walk so I requested help from the lobby assistant. He got me a private car for $57.00 with tolls and this car got me to JFK within 35 minutes. The car was waiting and the driver was hot. Ok, so is my husband. Whatever. This place is cool and worth every penny. I didn't give it a five because of the wallpaper, which I really don't care about but some might. I'm booking for next spring and asking for the same driver. read more

In terms of square-footage-for-your-buck, these are the best hotel rooms I've seen in NYC. We paid $129/night for what's more like an apartment than a hotel -- In addition to the usual sleeping area , it had a kitchen (with stove, plates, glasses, utensils, pots and pans, microwave, and fridge), a spacious sitting area with sofa and comfy side chairs, table space for dining and work, and huge windows with lots of light. Hell, you could have a party in here. I've stayed here twice, and both times were fine - quiet, clean, with nice staff. Also, just a couple blocks to Grand Central. Downside: There's not much going on in this neighborhood, especially at night. Eat and drink elsewhere. read more

I really enjoyed my stay at Eastgate Towers. Is it the most modern place to stay. No it is a bit dated. But all in all the acomodates were clean and really did not show much wear in tear in the furniture. ie. rips or frays in the fabric, rubbed edges on the wood. We had a one bedroom suite for 3 adults and one child. The bedroom area had 2 queen sized beds which were super comfortable. The living room had a pull out coach which my niece slept on for 2 nights with no complaints. The kitchen while small was clean, stocked with pots, pans, plates etc but lacking a pot holder. So if you are planing on doing any really cooking pack your own. Having a kitchen allowed us to eat breakfast in the room each day which was a money saver! The room/suite itself is very large and perfect for families. It also had a dining table area for eating and plenty of closet space. We could of used more hangers though. The A/C kept the room plenty cold. In fact I had to turn it down! The gym is very small. One treadmill, a multi function weight machin, one bike and 2 stair climbers, a TV and a sound system if you want to play music. It also offered a bathroom with a shower for those who check out then spend the day touring the city and want to clean up before leaving. Which is understandable on a hot summer day. The bell services will hold your bags. The location was awesome! Grand Central station (subway) was about a 5 minute walk. On 2nd and 3rd there were plenty of places to eat if you walk South. Murry Hill is a great place, very walkable and very safe. From the hotel we walked to times square, Bryant Park and even Top of the Rock. It is about a 10-15 min walk but very enjoyable. Lots to see. The staff here was very accomodating. The Bad: The elevator is small and slow but that would not stop me from staying here. It is hard to catch a cab back to the airport in the late afternoon (ie 4pm, 5pm). Nobody wants to take you there. So do not try to leave the city during a peak rush hour time. Keep looking. There are a hundred other places you can stay. I CANNOT BELIEVE that the Affinia Hotel organization has put there name on this place. Trust me when I tell you that I will be contacting corporate to share my disbelief. I realize this is an apartment conversion - so there are no hotel amenities like bar and restaurant - although you are close to a ton of options. But I expect more from Affinia - i stay OFTEN at the Affinia Shelburne only a few blocks away, but they were fully booked for this trip. So I thought I was safe staying at another Affinia property. Not so much! The place is simply worn down. The room was spacious enough, but with crummy, out-dated furniture. Worse yet, the furniture was worn down and scuffed up. Gross! The bathroom was clean, but the shower had NO PRESSURE, so I bathed under 3 little, wispy streams of water only coming out thanks to gravity. Needless to say, this does not start your day off well. The wallpaper is literally coming off the walls in places and is marked up and just beat up. The internet did not work for s^%T in my room (23rd floor) - and it cost $14 per day to boot - I had it taken off the bill, since I could not even download email, the signal was so weak! The staff were competent, but not nearly as friendly and engaging as the staff at the Shelburne property. So overall - this place is worn down, over-priced, out-dated and really not a place I will ever come back to or recommend. I think some of these reviewers have a low bar or stay at some REALLY crappy places to give this 3 and 4 stars. This hotel used to be an old apartment complex, so each unit has its own living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc. You actually get a LOT considering the price for most NY hotels. The rooms are quite spacious - although the bathrooms are a little cramped. I just like the fact that you feel like you are a part of the city. It felt like it was our little 'home'. I stayed here during my first visit to New York in May 2008, which made my first experience wonderful! Only 2 blocks away from Grand Central - which makes it the perfect location if the subway will be your primary means of transportation. It's literally a 15 minute walk to Times Square. The elevator is a little cramped and takes FOREVER. We stayed on the very top floor, so going up and down the elevator took a while since we nearly had to stop at every single floor to pick up more passengers. I found another elevator, however, located around the side which I believe is meant for employees only.. but hush.. that'll be our little secret! They do have a little fitness center with old, rusty looking equipment. I wouldn't work out in there if you are claustrophobic, tho. In general, this is a really cozy spot - a little on the dingy side, but hey - it's NEW YORK! I would definitely recommend this place and would definitely stay here again! read more

Booked a queen bed thinking i booked a king bed. 3 girls on a queen bed is a bit tough. We arrived early and our room was not ready yet. So we stored our luggage at the front desk. Came back around 9pm to check in. They realized that there was 3 of us and tried to find us a room with 2 beds. Since we checked in later that night, all the rooms were booked. Front desk told us to call tomorrow morning to see if they could switch our room. Called front desk the next morning and they had reserved a room with two beds for us to stay in for the rest of the week at no extra charge. THANK YOU! Eastgate towers gets 5 stars from me because of their great customer service (from the front desk staff to the cleaning staff), spacious rooms, location (right by Grand Central Station, easy to hop on the subway), and price. read more

Located just a few blocks from Grand Central, this place was a perfect spot for a long weekend in NYC. Granted, I've lived here, so I don't qualify as a tourist when I visit the city, but, I guess I must know a bit more than some of these "seasoned" business travelers. Room size was great for what I'm used to in Chicago and previous hotel stays in NYC. It'd be a decent studio for what it had. Little kitchen, equipped with a med size fridge, appliances and dishes. Small table to eat, a couch and chair, queen bed and okay sized bathroom. Our view was typical of NYC...you look out your window across some span and there you have another building. Nothing that thrilling, but, seriously, you're in the city. Go outside and worry less about your window. The age of the hotel is apparent, and it's something that's considered a work in progress. To that end, I can't take off because it hasn't been retouched in the last five years and it doesn't bill itself as anything swanky. My room didn't have any of the other listed things (water pressure, etc) so I chalk that up to randomness. I know I've had the occasional sub-par room in a decent place before. As stated above, location was key. From here, if you're mobile and confident, while also capable of using your phone map and such, you can get everywhere you need to be in a short pop. I consider 15-20 blocks to be an easy walking range, which will get you to any number of interesting spots and neighborhoods. Also, subway access three blocks away, Hertz rental one block away, and maybe six blocks to Grand Central. While they don't have a restaurant (for the lazy traveler), a mere three block range will lead you to quality pizza, chinese take out, sushi, pub and bagels. Staff was friendly and helpful, and seemed happy to have a domestic traveler who'd been at this a while. Lastly, the internet. Someone got their panties in a bunch over this, despite their jet-setting ways. Seasoned travelers have smartphones. Even more seasoned travelers have hotspot generators. We scavenged the Internet for reasonable New York hotels during Christmastime, and Eastgate Tower was affordable and had pretty good reviews. Yes, the hotel is small and old, but how lovely was it to have a kitchen! We had a humongous pizza the first night and--thanks to the handy fridge--we were able to finish it off the second night...and the third night. The stove came in handy when I had a bad stomachache from said pizza (it wasn't bad, just rich), and my mom warmed up some chicken soup for me. Also, the TV had movie channels, which kept my restless self occupied at night. Sorry--we're pretty low-tech, so I'm not sure about the Wi-Fi. Location was pretty darn good, too. We were within walking distance to the Grand Central Station and several landmarks. The hotel is slightly off the beaten path, but I felt pretty safe. Staff was also friendly and informative. We wouldn't mind keeping this place on hand to which to return on another NY trip or to refer people. read more

We needed a hotel room that accommodated 4 women. Didn't want to share a bathroom. My friend did a ton of research to find this place. It's in a good location--several blocks from Grand Central Station. Easy to catch the subway or train. Used to be an apartment building. We had a huge suite with 2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large living room and a small kitchen. It was nothing fancy but for the price was an excellent deal. They do need to renovate the hotel but I imagine that it would bring on much higher prices. The bedrooms and bathrooms were relatively clean but the kitchen wasn't. The floor was filthy and the refridgerator was pretty old. We had a nice, large dining room table to sit at. Great place to gather around in the apartment. The living room furniture, especially the couch, was old and rather shabby. This is a great place for families and for a group of friends to stay if you aren't looking for anything fancy and can deal with 1970s furniture. read more

EWWWWWW!!!!! This is the nastiest, dirtiest hotel I have ever seen. The shower curtain has toothpaste spit stains all over it, the beds, couch and pillows smell like wet dog. In what world is a comforter considered optional, there are no comforters in this place??? What next no toilet seats!! All of this was terrible but the front desk staff was the worst part. Never again, if I had not prepaid for this trip I would have checked out as soon as I saw the room. read more

I stayed here while visiting New York for a bachelorette party. Although the room's decor is a little outdated, the room itself was super spacious! There were 2 full size beds and the couch also pulled out into a bed. The room rate was a little pricey but I stayed with a group so it wasn't too bad once we divided it up. The staff is nice and courteous and this hotel is within walking distance to a lot of places. read more

after asking several yelpers & reading reviews my husband decided we should stay here. we give it 4 stars because of its location!! this is in a nice neighborhood which is a short walk distance from various places such as Grand Central Station, Time Square, good eateries. it is also a nice size room with a full kichen (small stove/small frig/sink) it was also clean. it was made up every day and bathroom was cleaned every day too... only issue we had was the actual bed. the mattress was very worn out.. it was one of those that no matter how much you try to stay on your side you slip into the middle and there is a pocket right smack in the center of the darn mattress!! that was not good... but it was soft...had a table w/2 chairs - 1 side chair - queen size bed, clean towels and toiletries were body lotion, shampoo and conditioner - we received there 2 times out of the 4 days we were there.... I spent this weekend with friends sharing a very spacious 2BR, 2BA kitchenette suite. I believe that, for NYC standards, the room was extremely spacious. Overall, the hotel and the room were very clean and quiet and the staff very friendly and responsive. My only complaint is that the decor is a bit dated, but that's a very minor complaint. The Eastgate Towers is a good bargain considering the amount of space and amenities in a great, easy access location in a very safe area withing walking distance of many shops, restaurants, and even Grand Central terminal. If it was just a little bit more modern, I'd give it a five star rating, and I would definitely stay there again. read more

Definitely exceeded my expectations. This hotel was far cheaper than other hotels that came up on our Expedia/Travelocity searches. We booked on Hotels.com and this was "on sale". The only rooms that were cheaper or as cheap, were hostel type places or places not in Manhattan. As everyone else says, rooms are spacious, clean and everything works. Decor isn't great, a little out dated but I think the rooms look better in person than they do in the pictures. Lots of closet space too!! I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to budget travelers that want to stay close to Midtown. read more

It is beyond me why I would stay here for the same price as any other luxury hotel. Perhaps just being a minute away from the 4,6 helps but still. Maybe it was just my room, but my room was very uncomfortable and it seemed like it hadn't been stayed in for weeks. The bed creaked if you breathed at all, and the sheets had some rather questionable stains on them. Sure, we had a kitchen, but I wouldn't really go out of my way to use it. Let me start off with I have stayed in New York many times for work and I have experienced Eh to Amazing!!! This is closer to the Eh side. The size of the room for New York (AMAZING). The price is under $300 which for New York is also amazing. However, I shouldn't have to say "for New York." I should walk away saying Amazing without any "for _____" after it. Here are a couple of issues I ran into with my stay: 1. I did not receive my bill/receipt underneath my door. As someone who travels for my job and has to take early flights out it is something I expect to have for quick check out. 2. The heater in the room would make a horrible noise every time it came on. It would actually sound like an animal inside it was trying to claw it's way out. It would wake me up in the middle of the night and scare me. 3. The bed linens... No fitted sheet! All it was was a flat sheet and it wasn't even tucked underneath the mattress. Kept coming up in the middle of the night and making it lumpy to sleep on. 4. I have long hair and I don't mind using hotel shampoo/conditioner but I always bring my own just in case. Well, after my first night (I stayed 3) I never had my shampoo, conditioner or soap bar replaced. Good thing I brought my own stuff. 5. When I would get back from training there would always be cleaning carts in the hallway (including next to my room) But I would never see people cleaning. The halls are narrow enough to begin with and I don't want to hassle with moving a cart to get to my door. 6. One of the elevators didn't work in the sense that it didn't change floors on it's digital display. It was stuck on 25 down arrow the whole time. 7. The molding around doors, frames, and closets looked moldy/worn. Not very appealing. 8. Tile grout in bathroom was black in most spots. And I could see the original white in the others... read more

Great location! The one bedroom suite is a huuuuuge room that is great for a family with young kids. It's essentially a converted apartment building. The one bedroom suite is a one bedroom apartment with small kitchen area, dining table, living room, separate bedroom, and two bathrooms! A very economical place to stay in NYC if you have young kids. Our room had 2 queen beds and the sofa in the living room was a sofa bed. We could have easily fit more people in this place. I held back two stars because the place is OLD. Outdated and needs a thorough cleaning. The sinks dripped, the toilets leaked, and the carpet needed to be replaced. We dealt with it due to the amazing location but I'm glad I brought slippers. Who knows when the carpets were cleaned last. The place is desperate need of a make over. It could charge more if it were more up-to-date. read more

I thought this hotel provided basic accommodations at an exceptional price! I booked through expedia and it was even cheaper than through the hotel itself. The pictures seem a LITTLE misleading on the site, they are true just everythings different in perspective lol. Anywho check-in was super smooth and friendly. Was assigned my room right away. I get up to it and discover that sadly I was given a single queen bed. Now I'm gay and was traveling with another platonic gay friend but I still would have preferred to have had separate beds since I mentioned it in my reservation and called ahead about it but I digress. The room was fucking HUGE!! The biggest I've ever had in NYC and that includes several chain hotels I've stayed at in the City. It had a microwave, mini-fridge, stove, plates, silverware, ice maker, cups, I mean EVERYTHING you could possible need. two huge closets and a nice sized bathroom with full tube and plenty of hot water and pressure!! The room was meticulously clean and had a nice view from the window. I agree some of the furnishing was outdated but it was all very functional. I will complain that whhile the bed was comfy, the comforter was the thinnest I've ever slept with in my life. Also the heat/ac was difficult to modulate a problem we could have probably had resolved had we called the front desk. But we'd just run the heat and crack the window if we got too l hot lol. It was 6-7 min from grand central station which I guess is a "long walk" to the subway by new york standards. Hell it takes me 12-14 min to walk to Metro from my house in Alexandria. I loved the neighborhood. It was safe and walkable. Grocery store around the corner as well as numerous eclectic bars and eateries on 3rd Ave. Ran into minor snafu when our transportation was grounded out of the city due to snow so we had to book another night. Unfort. they couldn't match our expedia rate and ultimately charged me more than said they would ( I was told their quoted price included all taxes and fees- which it didn't so that marred an otherwise great stay.) If I could get the expedia rate again I'd hands down stay here again in the future! read more

I tried to roll over no stars for this review but I had to give it one! I had the most horrible, disgusting experience of all my hotel stays at the Eastgate Tower. I stayed here in December 2011. My boyfriend found it and we were going to see the tree and out to dinner. The room was small and looked out of date, but I didn't care so much about that. As long as rooms are clean, temperature and bed are comfortable, I'm usually satisfied. We were laying in bed and I went to put something on the nightstand next to the bed and to my horror I saw a pile of large nails, pretty sure they were toenails! I was HORRIFIED! They definitely weren't my boyfriend's and they weren't mine so obviously the maid didn't clean this place too well. I have never experienced anything so gross in my life. When we checked out, we told the person at the desk and he apologized and said he would tell the maids, but nothing else was done. Needless to say, I was totally grossed out and never will return here. read more

Best bang for the (cheap) buck. Location, friendly / helpful staff, clean, well appointed rooms (huge by NYC standards) Comfy bed with luxury linenes. Comfy sofa, chair. Love the compact kitchen,,,many gormet delis and food stores within a few blocks. Have stayed sevveral times, and always find it looking fresh / not dated. Bathrooms are always sparkling, with nice toiletries. Price, space, comfort, location = 4 stars The only show in town IMHO. read more

Great place! Just like home away from home! Bellman Patrick and Front Desk staff, Donna was simply great! Lost one star because we had to wait several hours before house keeping turned up to set up our sofa bed for our daughter. Also we had to call when they keep on forgetting to replenish our toilet paper. Lastly, one of their Front Desk staff, was very stuck up and unfriendly :-(.. Overall, we had a great time so we will definitely stay there again the next time we are in NY. read more

Apartment is big at a somewhat reasonable price for NYC, but dirty! The kitchen floor doesn't look like it has ever been mopped, sticky phone, dirty lightswitch, filthy walls, torn wall paper, no soap or shampoo in one of the bathrooms. Supposed "daily" maid service -- no vacuuming or cleaning (obviously). Maid makes up beds and fresh towels. Counters aren't wiped etc. On our second day we went to the corner store and bought cleaning supplies and paper towels and cleaned the apartment ourselves. Unbelievable amount of filth came up. Location is poor too - 10 min walk to get to subway. Each bed had one thin blanket and no ability to control the temp. We've been freezing but front desk says they have run out of blankets. Only positives are a nice staff, apt is roomy and quiet location. The filth and run down nature of the place overwhelms any positives though. Lots of Europeans stay here (arranged thru the booking.com website). I only hope they got a super deal because of the strong Euro. I would not stay here again nor would I recommend it. read more
