This is our fourth January staying here, and we hope to enjoy many more. We love the staff and the location, which is conveniently close to Bryant Park and just two blocks from Grand Central Station, providing quick access to almost anything. We enjoy walking to Broadway and exploring the many great restaurants nearby. While Central Park and the museums require a bit longer walk, we appreciate the exercise. The accommodations are very comfortable, and there was plenty of space for our children to visit. You truly can't beat the value! read more

My husband and I just spent about 3.5 months at Murray Hill and we highly recommend it. It is a long term hotel that is much used by UN employees, interns and others needing to stay in the heart of Manhattan for a long period of time. The staff is attentive and friendly, providing weekly maid service and a change of linens, and maintenance as needed. It is located in an incredibly convenient area, with grocery stores, gyms, nail salons, a dry cleaner and shoe repair within a block or two. Of course, it is located near Grand Central and an easy cab ride from LGA and Kennedy. We found the large one bedroom to be suitable, and the oversized king bed to be so comfortable that we want to buy one for our own apartment. There are laundry facilities in the basement, as well as a small work out center. It is the perfect place if you need a long term hotel, or effectively a short term rental in Manhattan--of which there are few places. The price is reasonable for Manhattan. There are only two somewhat minor caveats: (1) the hotel is located on 39th between Lex and Third and that part of Lex is very commercial and not the nicest (although safe); and (2) the hotel is in need of an upgrade or renovation. However, for a short term rental, we don't think the place can be beat! read more

This hotel was a huge surprise! When I first stepped into the lobby, I was a little nervous...The lobby looked a little dated...It wasnt very spacious either. But then, I stepped into my room and I couldnt believe what I saw! The room came with a kitchen, a sofa, huge bed....It was like I rented somebodies apartment for two nights! Like a fellow Yelper suggested, this place probably used to be an apartment complex... For the price, you're getting a great deal! Absolutely the worst experience I've had with a hotel in my life. From the second I walked in, the front desk aka "manager" gave me an attitude about not accepting Discover for incidentals (but they took American Express). He gave me a room in the basement and did not warn me of this until I went to look for the room. When I asked to switch to a different room, he condescendingly said they were all booked. We then asked to talk to the manager, which he at that point claimed to be, but his attitude did not get any better. Finally he offered a room with a single queen bed (we have three people) without even looking in the system, so he was lying about being booked earlier. When we showed up to the room, the decor can only be called retro Asian, possibly furnished in the 1980s. It is spacious enough with a sitting area, small kitchenette, a full couch, and a small flat screen. Then I found out that the bathroom was not cleaned. There was urine on the toilet seat and stains in the bath tub. There was a small stain and some hairs on the bed sheets. There were multiple ashtrays in the room, and we were not told that this was a smoking room. The next morning, the front desk was a different person, but the service was no better. I waited patiently for her to finish with another costumer at a respectable distance. As soon as she was done, another customer cut in front of me, and she did not say anything or even acknowledge that I waited for a good 10 minutes for her. When it was finally my turn, not only was she unfriendly, she actually picked up the phone to make a call in front of me and just plopped the receipt in front of me without even making eye contact. Overall, this was the most inhospitable establishment with the rudest staff and the most disgusting rooms. BE AWARE !!!! Please READ First of all, I rented the suite over the internet & I sent them the rent over the bank. They asked me to pay 6482.63 $ for 2 months including the tax , plus 500 deposit fee. Now I wanted to check out they said no, we didn't ask for 500$ our file shows you paid 370.13 deposit!!! WTF He printed out the transaction for my stay, it turned out there are TWO types of tax in New York. New York city flat occupancy tax and New York tax. So the problem here they didn't tell me the price for both tax and told me 500 is deposit and they will return them to me but they detected the surplus of the tax from my deposit. Only 370.13 remains for the deposit. Also as in the paper I sent them 6982.63( plus 24$ I paid for my bank & their bank service fees). In their record they wrote I paid 6962.63$ , where my 20$ . It's gone like the 500$ deposit. So they didn't include all the tax on the price just so their price will look cheaper. If you are not familiar with the tax now you know ask them to include both tax on the price before you book their rooms. The internet isn't free, 8$ per day,50$ per month. The Landryroom, 2 $ for the washer 2 $ for the dryer = 4 $ for your Landry per use. My review of the place, A bit old but it's ok. Nothing special about it. My boss lives in Chicago and comes to New York about every six weeks for meetings and to prove that she does work and stuff. She almost always stays at the Murray Hill East. She also almost always has a party in her hotel room, inviting sparkling and interesting people from all over. So I've been to parties there four or five times, and the suites are quite well-appointed, with the kitchen, dishes, and all that. On the upper floors -- at least 12 and 15 -- there are suites with terraces, a great asset to a cocktail party. The front desk is not overweeningly (or, actually, even the slightest bit) inquisitive as to the destination of people walking in off the street and striding purposefully toward the elevator. One caveat for the guest in search of peace and quiet: my boss is not the only person who has parties there. Two parties ago we had fun interactions with some dudes who were having a bachelor party across the hall. I don't know how loud things might seem for someone who was trying to sleep; the walls aren't paper thin or anything. On the other hand, this last time time my boss was bumped from the 15th floor to the 12th floor because some sort of middle-eastern royalty had invoked eminent domain over the 15th-floor suite she had reserved. So if it's good enough for Oil royalty, it's probably good enough for your broke ass. read more

I found this place randomly on hotels.com and it ended up being a diamond in the rough. I ended up paying under $150 a night for the biggest hotel room I have EVER stayed in in New York in a great location. The room not only was huge with a queen bed, couch, chair and dining table but there was even a full kitchen and a massive bathroom. There is also a workout room, although I didn't get a chance to use it so I can not make any promises on that aspect. Above all, this is in a great location. It is a 10 minute walk to Bryant Park, but is on a very quiet street making it easy to sleep at night. Overall an awesome experience staying here!! read more

If you love old, rustic architecture, than this is the Hotel for you. It's not new and fancy. You're given an actual key, as opposed to a key card. There's lots of creaking when doors open and close. But I love it! Most of the Hotel Staff was wonderful. A couple if times, one or two of them were clearly having a bad day. The evening Doorman was very, very hospitable. The evening Hotel Clerk was also very kind. The Clean Staff were all so sweet and efficient. I'd say that the only things I had an issue with....the vending machine swallowed our money. If you have lots of hair to maintain, like me. I suggest bring your own shampoo and conditioner. Like any hotel, it's never really the best quality. If you can prevent making any phone calls from your room phone, do it. Even local calls, they'll charge you $.90. I was a little surprised by that. Oh, and at check-in, we had to present a credit card for incidentals. They do not accept Discover. That's a bummer. I do love the door bells that each room has! Much nicer than harsh knocking. The water pressure was wonderful in the showers. And they had a cute little kitchenette with a fridge to keep our beverages cold. I'd come back again! read more

Hard to rate. My room is GARGANTUAN (like 700-800 square feet) - it's a large 1-br apartment well-located in Midtown East, near 42nd St station. Great deal through Hotwire. Great for hosting gatherings. QUIET. It is SOOOOO outdated. No wireless access in rooms. Spotty in lobby as I type. You still use a key. I was so nervous there were bed bugs that I barely slept the first night. Not sure it's dirty per se, but so outdated that you assume it is. Also - I have a smoking room, but it doesn't smell smokey. My husband and I stayed here while in NYC for a wedding and couldn't have been more pleased. We got a great rate from priceline - well under $150 for the biggest hotel room we could possibly imagine for that kind of price range in the city. The room was more like an apartment with a sitting room with couches, a full kitchen and of course a private bathroom. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. There was a nice lobby with good seating. The icing on the cake was the bagel shop on the corner that had tofu cream cheese. I imagine that we'll stay here next time we come to New York... the location was great, the room was clean and huge with all the amenities we could hope for and the price was great. read more

As the time grew near for a business conference in NYC, I started looking into accommodations. Manhattan is expensive, regardless of where you stay.... well, not exactly. From tons and tons of research I find the Murray Hill East Suites. Two double beds, a small love seat for watching TV and (ready for this?) a kitchenette! All for the low price of $111 a night plus tax! As a disclaimer I must add... This pricing may not be typical and your results may vary. I am not an actor nor do I play one on TV. See dealer for details, this offer void where prohibited. Kayak and Orbitz had virtually the same price when searching, we booked with Orbitz. Calling the hotel directly will get you a price match from any advertised site at a worse case scenario. ...but I digress. The Murray Hill East Suites is by no means the Ritz. It is an older building with character, built back in the days when it was taboo to have a 13th floor. As a side note, there is a 14th floor and a Penthouse. It is a clean hotel, the staff is awesome with careful attention to detail and the location in Midtown was perfect for my needs. The fitness room had modern equipment and I found the area to be more than adequate. The maid did an excellent job of cleaning our room and was very friendly. The doorman always greeted you with a smile and was there to hold the door open up until at least midnight. The staff was very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and guided me to the absolute BEST clam chowder I have ever eaten within an easy 2 minute walk. There are nicer places to stay especially if you have a larger budget that I was working with. When in NYC, how much time do you spend in your room anyway? In my 4 night stay I might have spent 2 hours in the room when not sleeping. For the price... can't be beat. Will stay there anytime I head into Midtown. read more

So Eric and I thought it would be super fun to stay in a hotel for Christmas Eve and this was a great choice. I loved the old time swanky decor and the Christmas tree in the lobby. The room was HUUUGE, the bed was comfortable and it reminded me of an old grandma's apartment in a really good way. Had to fly to NYC for a last minute business trip. Everything was crazy expensive so I went to Priceline. I ended up with Murray Suites. When I saw the pictures, I was very worried, to be honest. The place looked outdated and sketchy. When we arrived, the staff was very friendly and very personable- not your typical robotic hotel staff. When I checked in, I was told that my room had been upgraded- whatever that meant, since I was still very worried about the room. I arrived to my room and was pleasantly surprised. Although slightly outdated, the room was clean and very spacious! Living room, dining area, even a full kitchen! It seems like this building may have been a condo building at one point. The place isn't your glamorous hotel chain, but I'm happy with it- especially for the price and location. read more

Our room was very clean and very big. Our first trip to NYC for 6 nights this month. This hotel made the stay an extra pleasant one! Great value compared to other hotels in the area. The staff were friendly and helpful. Two blocks from Grand Central, but with our group of 4 we found that a cab was just as economical. We walked just about everywhere we needed to go. Our room faced the back of the hotel - no street noise at all. Stayed in what I believe they called a junior suite - queen bed, fold out sofa, kitchenette. I used the coffee pot every day - it saved me from trekking out in the cold before I was fully ready to be awake. It is a bit out of date for sure, but for the price its not a big deal. I booked 2 apartments (3 beds each) for 10 adults + 2 babies. All of the adults are couple up and the babies were to sleep in the same bed as the parents so we really only needed 5 beds, but they told me that the 6 I had booked might not be enough to accommodate us (???) , but they would call me back and confirm. NEVER CALLED ME BACK. I called again the next day and a different man answered so I thought I would have better luck. He told me the same thing. He said it should be enough, but he will call back to confirm. My main goal was to make sure I wouldn't be charged any hidden fees once I got there because they felt the apartments wouldn't accommodate us. NEVER CALLED BACK!!!! So I tried to call and call, but never got an answer. This place didn't seem professional whatsoever and I was not trying to get charged tons of money after my stay for whatever reason they could find so I cancelled. It was FREE CANCELLATION for both apartments. They day I cancelled, they charged my card $160. So I call and the man says he will talk to someone else about it and call me back in 30 minutes. I was hesitant to let him hang up because they NEVER CALL BACK and he said he will call me back and if he doesn't I can call them. I waited 2 hours for him to call back and surprise surprise he NEVER DID. So I called back and told him that yet again he failed to call me back and he responded with attitude saying that he actually told me to call him??? I haven't called y'all enough?????? I ignored it because I was so ready to be done with them and he asked me information about my card and my booking (something he could've done on the first phone call, but they seem like the push things off with "we will call you back later") and then told me they would return the money and he didn't know why I was charged. I said okay and hung up. I immediately called back to get a confirmation number and without looking up anything, he gave it to me and I went to confirm the number I had and he had HUNG UP! Tried to cal back and no answer. Hoping I get my money returned to my card in the next few days. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. From other reviews, it seems they constantly have hidden charges and sometimes charge for no reason PLUS the other reviews mention how disgusting the rooms are. Murray Hill East! Wow was indeed an experience! It was bad but then again it could've been worse. I could give it 3 stars seeing how most of these old hotels I've seen here on Yelp have horrible reviews and pictures say a thousand words! At least we didn't experience nasty stains on sheets because I think I would've vomited right then and there. Didn't have any bed bug problems either. The most memorable and inconvenient issue was the A/C not working for about a week. When it first stopped working I called the front desk and was told "they are working on it". Later that afternoon still no sign of it and the windows were too hard for me to open. Next day, called again (and mind you if there's something I hate is to be behind people, I was hoping for a courtesy call or some notice by the elevators, lobby, wherever), same issue. By third day we were told, they are waiting on a company to come and fix the A/C. We both rather be on the colder side than on the hot and sweaty side, so three days without A/C was a big deal for us. Cleaning lady came and opened windows but had no clue when it would be fixed. Now the 2nd and 3rd issue was due to not having A/C...lack of sleep due to the street sounds I so love in NYC (I DO just NOT when I'm trying to sleep) and the SMELL of sewer/trash each time the garbage trucks came by. Our room was at the very corner of where the garbage gets picked up. I'm telling you, having the windows open helped a little with ventilation but it was so bad I felt like I was literally right next to the trash. Our 3am conversation was to go get a fan for the room ASAP! Murray Hill didn't have any, so before heading out to the various potential locations that could have a fan, I called Best Buy on 5th ave, a couple of nearby CVSs, and a couple of Duane Reade's. NONE had regular fans in October because it's a seasonal item! With the exception of Best Buy that had a Dyson fan for $300. With no luck finding one, my bf ordered 3 small regular fans on amazon and we received them next day. A week without A/C was just too much and we were going to be there for three months so it was a necessity! Another issue we had was that there wasn't hot water a couple of mornings, and water came out nasty brown. We also encountered a couple of NYC cockroaches in the bathroom...I just thought the whole time "at least this isn't Joe's Apartment! The last minor issue was that the (creepy) laundry room's washer and dryer are so old and one of the days our clothes were still wet after 30 mins. I got my money back at front office but had to spend more time waiting for the other dryer to be freed up. After all we went through, I cannot give this place the 3 stars I would give them for their friendly and professional staff and for the great location! If it's paid for by your work place then by all means suck it up like we did, but if you're paying for it you might want to reconsider. Other than those issues, LOCATION IS PERFECT! read more

Starting with the bad news, Murray Hill East Suites has bed bugs. I had an infested apt when I lived in NYC before: I know what bed bug bites look like and feel like. Got one on my 2nd nite and another on my 3rd nite. That's why I give it one star. If they decontaminated, I would give 2 stars. Spacious room with kitchen is a plus. Minuses: outdated decor, no microwave, and Wifi you have to pay for that is unacceptably slow for conducting biz, as in download times measured in minutes, no exaggeration. So off I go with all my stuff in ziplocks and garbage bags, shoved into my suitcase. Everything that can't be washed n dried on "hot" goes into the freezer for a couple of days. Should be OK. The room was spacious and clean. Good distance from many attractions and the staff was friendly. But, there were some big problems. Around 7 am there were very loud sounds directly above our room, sounded like a jackhammer, went on for about 10-15 minutes then started again around 9. The water-pressure in the bathroom was very high (which is usually a good thing), so much so that it was almost painful. Also, we had to pay an additional 40 dollars a night just to get a pull out bed in our room. Now, I didn't expect the bed to be on par with a regular bed, but it was extremely uncomfortable.My back hurt badly in the morning, and I am only 23! I would avoid this hotel. read more

As has been mentioned quite a lot, this hotel is pretty old, decor is not the best and yes it has a rickety elevator but coming from Australia we were obviously tourists so we weren't in NYC to stay in or care too much about the hotel room. As long as it was clean and the beds were suitable, we were happy enough. The rooms themselves are surprisingly spacious and we had a kitchenette that we used for breakfast (there's a D'Agostino's supermarket conveniently around the corner on 3rd Ave for supplies). There were 4 of us (me, my wife and two teenage kids) and there was plenty of room for us all to spread out and relax after a big day of sightsseeing. Housekeeping did a good job and overall the rooms were fine. I also couldn't fault the staff while we were there although I admit we didn't encounter any problems so didn't really have to liase with anyone other than to ask about the laundry. A big advantage of this hotel is that it's within easy walking distance to many of the 'must see' things in NYC. Less than 15 mins and you'll be in line for the Empire State and approx 20 min stroll will have you in the middle of Times Square, at the Rockefeller Centre or Tiffany's on 5th Ave! Being only a few mins from Grand Central and the subway means it's dead easy to get to the other areas of Manhattan as well. In regards to price, Murray Hill East Suites was one of the best value hotels we could find and we did a lot of research before finally booking somewhere. Location v cost was our biggest consideration and to be honest, I don't think you'd beat this one. When you add the generous room size into it then it becomes pretty good value for money. Just don't go in with overly high expectations, take it for what it is and enjoy the fact you're staying in a great location in a great city! read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here for our trip to NYC during New Years weekend. With hotel prices hiked up for the holidays, we got a room here via Hotwire, looking for something affordable. I was pretty pleased with our accommodations at Murray Hill East Suites throughout our stay in NYC! Although the building itself is not very modern, the suites are super spacious and clean. It was all we needed really! In a past trip to NYC, I recall staying at Best Western --now that was sheisty. This was more than comfortable! Location was great! Just a few blocks from Grand Central, we had great access to the subway. Even any cab rides we took were not too bad. Overall, we had a great experience here for a totally affordable price (around $100 something). Would totally stay here again, and recommend it to anyone looking to stay in NYC on a budget. read more

Very disappointing experience overall. We stayed here because my sister had booked the same hotel. It was convenient to all stay together but it became a "misery loves company" story. The rooms are indeed large, and the location is good - so I give it one star for each attribute. Otherwise, it is an extremely outdated place with limited amenities and indifferent staff. Temperature controls consisted of turning the heater on/off for warmth and opening the window to cool it off. Maybe the slowest elevators in a hotel I have ever experienced. When they worked. My advice is to pay the extra $20-30 a night and stay somewhere else where they have a brand that has some standards. We won't be back. read more

One of the best hotel experiences I have ever had in my life! I got this room on Priceline for $110 a night, and upon check-in, I was told that they were suddenly out of queen rooms. Normally, this would have been a problem, but they gave me a room with a twin bed, a twin pullout and a TERRACE instead. The room was huge, had a full kitchen (great for the leftovers I kept bringing back to the hotel), nice bathroom with tub, oh, and the TERRACE, from which you could see the Empire State Building to the left, and the water to the right. The decor was rather outdated, but who cares about that for $110/night?!?!? The desk staff was helpful, there was free internet access in the lobby, and the neighborhood had some really good restaurants and bars nearby. I stayed 10 days, 6 of them by myself until my boyfriend flew out to meet me, and didn't once feel uncomfortable walking around alone, even at 3 or 4 in the morning. The only reason I did not give this place 5 stars was the sketchy elevator and somewhat rude housekeeping staff. EVERYTHING else about our stay was great! Great location off of Grand Central. Rooms are quite large (and outdated) for Manhattan standard, except the bathrooms.

Spacious, clean rooms. There were three of us and they upgraded to a 2 BR suite w/ full living room and kitchen. Nice! Comfortable. Great location. It's very basic--don't expect fancy. The first TV didn't work and the second hardly worked. Apparently they are planning to upgrade the TVs. I hope that's where the upgrades stop. This is a nice, price-friendly spot to stay. read more

Murray Hill East Suites may be old as everybody else have been saying, but you will be lucky to get rooms this big in Manhattan for this price and in this location elsewhere. The Pro's: The rooms are very big. They can house 4 people (2 in a queen sized bed and two on a couch-bed or on the floor). The kitchenette is definitely of usable size. The rooms were clean. The location was great. The Con's: The hotel is indeed old. The elevators are confusing (when you press the button to order the elevator there is no indication for whether it is coming or not). The staff is quirky. The maid opened our door at 8:00 AM "by mistake" (i.e. to remind us to leave). The WiFi is only available in the lobby. The bottom line: I will not try to come here again, but I won't be sad if HotWire dropped me here again. read more

The room is fantastic and very spacious with comfortable bed, A/C, and kitchenette. My only complaint, if you can really call it that, is they do not offer free wifi or conditioner. My wife & I have stayed at Murray Hill on three occasions, once in a room with two queen beds and the other two in a suite with two queens and a sofa bed in the living room. The rooms also have a kitchen with pots, pans, dishes & silverware which is is a money saver. Never had a problem with noise. The housekeeping staff does a good job every day. I would prefer to give 2.5 stars, but that wasn't exactly an option. It wasn't awful, but I didn't like it too much either. The staff was really nice and helpful. The beds were a little bit small for 2 people and the blankets were kind of itchy. The bathroom was really cramped and the floor felt like it had a sticky film on it, and after 3 of us had showered there was water dripping from the ceiling, and the water wasn't even too hot! The kitchen area was decent, there was everything someone would need, but some of the cabinets had trouble openings. The tv had only a few channels, but when you're in NYC who needs to camp out in their room anyways, right? Near some good restaurants and corner markets, and it is really convenient to get to Grand Central form there. The hotel itself wasn't super pretty, but it was suitable. read more

This is the worse hotel I ever been to. The old grandpa Dennis is rude. When I mention a problem to him, he tells me if I have a problem, he tells me to go somewhere else. Not only that, the room has bedbugs and the room is dirty. Toilets has poopies mark. It is just so disgusted. read more
