Flew all the way to NY and today it is my birthday and had hoped for a nice day instead had to deal with the fact that room has no bathroom and it charges for wifi. So got screwed out of more money to get a room with bathroom leaving us dry from my budget of our 4 day stay in NY. So my birthday got completly ruined as I was heartbroken by the way I got treated. Humans really do not give a damn and clearly good deeds do not actually happen. This sort of stuff should not happen..... wifi should be readily available and all rooms should have bathroom.... we no longer live in the dark ages. The shared bathroom has no heating so it is cold too in there :( The hotel in itself is nice and quaint. It is situated in a good location with easy transportiin at hand. read more

This Hotel seemed to be a great bargain online when booking through a vendor, however the attitude and way of talking to customer by front desk RUDY AND HASSAN was totally rude and inappropriate . We booked a room online at 3:30 am to check in that same day but when we got to the front desk we were told that we. " missed" our checkin because it was booked as if Tuesday. I can't believe I never reviewed this hotel. A year ago my mom brought a group of a dozen friends to visit New York City for a week, and they all stayed at this place. The rooms were clean and quiet, the service reliable and the managing staff helpful. The location may not seem central, but its close vicinity to the 1-2-3 subway trains makes it a desirable option, especially considering the lower price tag. If I have visitors in the future who need to stay at a hotel, I will surely recommend this place, again. read more

The photos of the rooms are misleading on the website Our room was only a couple feet wider and longer than a double bed. The size of the room wasn't a big deal even for the crazy over priced rate. I found it funny . Not the fact our view was of a brick wall. Lighting in the room was poor , bed was rock hard and my husband said it was baby roaches and not a bed bug or tic . Either way don't want to bring those home either. I'm afraid of what I would find if I flipped the sheets on the mattress so I used all my strength not too. read more

I liked this hotel. In true NY fashion, it wasn't very cheap - But it was nice for what it was and what I paid (compared to other area hotels). It's centrally located - Quite a few good restaurants to try in the area. Loved that public transport was right there. The Subway is literally across the street. Also right around the corner from Central Park. I walked all the way through Central Park to get to most of the museums and it was a nice 30 minute walk. Central Park is gorgeous. Tip: Fly into Newark or LaGuardia if you want to stay at this hotel - JFK is ridiculously far away from this hotel. Not sure if there was on-site parking but there was an upcharge for internet usage if you wanted. I didn't want to pay the extra charge so I was thinking I could use my phone if I needed to... but I actually ended up using the Days Inn wifi and it was free. It wasn't password protected either, so score for me! read more

Once again Hotel Newton does not disappoint me, since 2016 I have stayed at this hotel 3 times. Yes it is an old building just like most building in NYC. Their staff is very friendly, specially Juan. If you flighting in or out from La Guardia airport is very close you can get an Uber between $35 to $60 depending if you are pooling or using private or you can get the M60 bus and transfer to the subway which is less than a block away from the Hotel. Location is good and you Manhattan dinner next to the hotel (they have good breakfast) and also 94 Corner cafe one block away which food is really good (sandwiches, pizza, coffee, desserts) and they are open late. read more

I stayed here once with friends on a weekend trip to NYC a few years ago, the room had a private bath. I'm actually doing a hotel search and was happy to see this one came up in my search for a solid, clean, affordable hotel. I recall it being very clean and had everything you needed. Very polite customer service considering we were a large group. More residential, less touristy since its on the upper west side, so train rides and taxis are a must - as anywhere in the city. Plenty of local, neighborhood restaurants to chose from. Super close to the train. I think I may give them a try on my next trip up to NYC in a few months and will update my review with more details. 3 stars not because it's bad but because it's not a luxury or near luxury hotel. I would give a more expensive, more luxurious hotel 4 or 5, but I was looking for affordable. For NYC in a good area this hotel is reasonable. We stayed there the end of Feb. 2008 so I don't know the air conditioning situation. Our room was "well" heated, however. We keep our home cool so the room was too warm. I finally turned off the valve on the radiator and the room was better the last night. No heat thermostat. We had no air conditioner. Don't know if it was removed for the winter or what. We had a control but no unit. This was the least expensive, fair quality hotel I could find. It turned out to be in a good part of the upper West Side and about a block from a subway stop. Although not ritzy, our room was furnished very nicely and it was very clean. Room was small but not too small like some of the horror stories I've heard about NYC hotels. Had a small fridge, a microwave, and HD flat panel TV (no movie channels). Bathroom was small but very nice, updated with new fixtures and tile, and absolutely spotless. Second room for my daughter's family had two beds (2 kids and 2 adults) and that made their room too tight. We had a single queen bed. Didn't use it but I think Internet in room is $5 from noon to noon. Two Internet computers in lobby were frequently in use - they take a credit card for per minute charges. No gym or restaurant or other special facilities. Customer service on the phone and at the desk were polite and helpful. They seem to do a lot of international business. Hotel was full of Germans the days we were there. Key West cafe next door was wonderful for breakfast. Loved a Tapas and wine bar that was about 2 blocks away. Nice wine store almost across the street (Gotham). Our stay was fine. Would go back but only to a room with one bed. read more

I booked through the hotel website directly. The value was one of the best that I could find for the location. The room was small but it served it's purpose in providing a CLEAN place to sleep and freshen up. (room with private bathroom) I am not saying this is a 4 star hotel but you get the best value for your money. If I planned to come to NY just to stay in a hotel all day then I would have invested more $ in another. Although check-in was at 3 pm, we had a room at 12 pm upon arrival. TV, air-conditioning and a refrigerator was also provided. If the microwave is unplugged, do not plug it in and use it. (or it will blow out the fuse). The hotel staff was able to quickly restored power to our room. Convenient location: right next to Duane Reed convenience store, subway station and many bakeries. There is only 1 small elevator (but I don't expect much since most of the NY buildings are old) Service was quick, efficient and helpful. read more

Consider this more of a 2 and a half star rating (I'll give them a little bit more since we had a bathroom and it was more affordable than other NY accomodations). My hubby and I went to NY around January 2008 for vacation. We actually got a good rate on the hotel when I went online. But this also got me nervous since I've never been to NY, and I've never seen this place. It was close to everything, even to a subway station, and is located on the Upper West Side. They had a good breakfast place next to it, and a good Thai restaurant nearby. As soon as we entered the hotel, it had that hostel vibe and was an old building (but we ignored it since most buildings in the city are old anyway). The lobby seemed nice from a distance, but when you look closely, the furniture is mis-matched and dirty! The staff was courteous to my hubby so that was a plus. We rode the elevator and it was those really old-school lifts! Scary if you ask me, then again, I enjoy those in old SF buildings too. I just don't want to get stuck. So far that didn't happen. Whew! We went to our room and as soon as we opened the door, it stunk! Smelled like pee and it was very, very small. I've seen hotel/motel rooms with bigger sizes for the same price. And this hotel is not even on Times Square! I kept telling my husband to upgrade or request for another room, but he just sprayed the room all the time and it was bearable, hahaha! We had a fridge, microwave, dresser, an lcd tv, a small closet, and a bathroom, so it wasn't too bad. Am not sure about air conditioning since it was cold in NY when we were there, sometimes snowing. I was also able to use the internet via wifi, but you have to pay $5 a day for it. We were there a week, but I only used the internet for 3 days. One time, the connection was so bad that I got a refund of the $5 bucks. On other days, it was pretty good. Overall, it was a good bargain but you definitely get what you pay for. Maybe I'll spend a couple more bucks for better accomodations next time I'm in town. But if I'm in a hostel budget, I'll probably go back here. read more

We went in to the city for my son's birthday and needed a room for the night but couldn't afford a big well known brand. That's how we found the little gem called Hotel Newton! A small non-descript hotel on the upper west side priced just right! The location was surrounded by conveniences; Manhattan diner next door, pizza parlors all around, cvs nearby. I was worried about past reviews saying bathrooms had to be shared so I called. Be at ease cause that is no longer the case! They have renovated (and are currently renovating again) so every room has its own bathroom. It is an old building, so rooms are smaller than big brands but it had everything we needed. Clean beds, a desk, tv, dresser, bathroom with shower and tub. Check-in was quick and polite; they also let us drop our bags since we were there before 3. They get a discount with the parking garage around the block; for our SUV it would've been $87 but the discount made it $57. The hotel was quiet, clean, nice elevator. When we go back to the city they will be first on my list to check for availability! read more

I stayed three nights with my family in summer 2021 and we enjoyed everything from the classic ambiance of the property to the comfort of our room - not to mention the wonderful location, less than a block from the subway (and thus 15 minutes to Times Square), a short walk to Central Park, surrounded by shops and restaurants... Be aware that a "Standard Room" is a tiny room with a full size bed. I booked a room FOR TWO six weeks in advance from a major hotel booking website and when I arrived in NY, was issued a cubicle with a full sized (double) bed. When I asked if I could upgrade, I was informed that the hotel was completely booked. My son had to stay with a friend in Brooklyn as there was no way we could both sleep comfortably there. When I contacted the manager on my return, I was informed that I was given the correct room and that I should have upgraded to a Deluxe room or contacted the hotel directly beforehand to ensure that what I wanted was available. He also suggested I contact the hotel booking website I used so they could explain to me how they operate (Huh?) To be fair, the front desk staff was friendly and courteous and the hotel was very clean. Some rooms have shared baths. You have to pay $1 for every five minutes of internet use. The hotel does not have a restaurant and there is no breakfast offered. I would not pay this kind of money for this type of accomodation or service again. My son's and I stayed here on our first visit to New York. I had read the other reviews and was ashamed of the negative reviews of those who didn't realize the value of this Classic Hotel. Hotel Newton was built in 1913 and been cared for & kept up to date with recent remodeling. Being from Orlando where Motels are fake, new but built quick & cheap - not built for quality. Update: we found bed bugs in our belongings after staying at this hotel. I had to throw out my expensive suitcase and all of my belongings to avoid bringing them into my house. I have big bites on my body. This is so awful, I'm sick and there's not even a bathroom in the hotel room, I have to share with a floor of strangers . there were cock roaches in the room and when I called the front desk they gave me a hard time about it and sent up a man in ripped jeans and a T-shirt who demanded he come in and inspect my room. My bf was not there and I had to carry all of our belongings down 4 flights because the elevator was broken. I guess we should have taken the hint from the rooms next to us marked with "contained room" . The front desk stAff was rude and considered that they did me a favor by "upgrading" my room to one with a bathroom in it and no bugs. This is the worst hotel experience. I can't believe there are good reviews on here. Additional update : checked out and got a new hotel, found bugs on my body and in my hair from the hotel Newton. They are bed bugs. We called Expedia and they said the manager refuses to do anything because we didn't report the bed bugs to him during our 1 night stay. read more

When I got to my hotel room, I noticed it was dark and small, which I could live with, but then I noticed there was no bathroom in the room. I had to share a bathroom down the hall with the person in the next room. I don't like hostels and haven't shared a bathroom with strangers since I was in college. I stayed as a free hotel stay for a conference. The room itself was nicely furnished and a reasonable size. Appropriate appliances including a fridge and microwave. However, WiFi was not included in the cost of the hotel, which seemed a bit ridiculous. The hotel itself is very old as you can tell from the elevator. Honestly I feel confident in giving it a solid four stars for my situation. So I'm staying in this hotel for 7 nights, which means we qualified for the 25% discount. We planned far in advance for our trip, which allowed us to get a two queen bed room with a bathroom. While the place is obviously smaller its still decent for a NYC hotel. If you do your research you'll be able to find a hotel that fits your budget much better, I think sometimes people don't plan ahead and get upset with the prices they pay. Front desk is okay, when we arrived they left me unimpressed, but no biggie. They just weren't as friendly as if I was walking into the Disneyland hotel, regardless they did their job efficiently and asked us if we needed any brochures or had questions. The elevator is super old school, but it's cool! Initially you feel a bit unsafe with how old it is, but it's not slow. Just less modern than what you're probably used to. There's a bit of a lag when the elevator is closing. Room size is big enough. I know some people have small rooms, but with two beds we have a decent sized room with a fridge, microwave, big drawer and table with mirror. I'd call that big enough. The closet is a bit tight. Some of you may get frustrated because the closets hit the bed... But I'm aware the room size is going to be small and therefore wasn't surprised. It adds a bit of character... The bath is surprisingly good! Our bathroom is a step higher so be careful if you have kids or aren't paying attention. You may not realize there's a step and will trip. The tub is a good size, but I'd say the water probably isn't as hot as it could get. I had the water on maximum heat and felt comfortable, but not like it was scalding. What makes this hotel really convenient is that the location is nice. The noise pollution isn't too bad and it's not a bad part of town so you can walk around comfortably. Also having the metro station so close makes getting around really easy. You can see the station from the front door! Overall I'm really happy with what we paid for. We have convenience, a Duane Reade right on our corner, a McDonald's for late night munchies, and a subway station all within a block. read more

Staff was very pleasant. We had ordered a roll-away bed for use in our Superior Queen room. Turned out that they had a large group from England that took them all. They upgraded us to a Queen Suite at no extra charge. As far as finances, we booked direct through the hotel. We were quoted $189/night. Upon arriving we found it to be $189 for the first night and $225 for the second night. The desk personnel wouldn't budge on that, but the did let us check into our room at 9:15 AM, so we decided not to argue further at that time. Beds were "ok" at best. Our room was clean. Issues with the place: only 1 elevator, which can get bogged down. Shared bathroom. I highly suggest you shower and get your business done at night before the morning rush. Nestled in-between a Duane Reade and the Manhattan diner on Broadway, this hotel is a small 'boutique' place with no frills. Good location for us visiting family in the area, but it cannot be compared to a 3star Marriot and is close in price, give or take some $. Absolutely no frills: the rooms are dated but clean, the beds are hard - no pillow tops here, the bathrooms are clean with basic amenities, carpet is really dated! We could not find a single socket to plug in our phones and ultimately had to pull the single bedside table forward & unplug the lamp and the alarm clock in order to charge our phones. Someone did not think about making this convenient for guests. The shampoo & conditioner bottles look like they've been refilled - yuck! And the lotion bottle is used and half empty-definitely not acceptable.We will be complaining to the management about this. The a/c is a small noisy window unit- definitely not enough to cool our room. This is our first night here so am hoping our stay is more comfortable as the weekend goes. 3 stars is stretching it for for this place. On a positive note, those who like the old fashioned appearance with a special charm will find this a gem. read more

The hotel is in a great location. Quiet neighborhood, great diner next door. Close to the subway, walking distance to decent restaurants, banks, etc. This is where the good stuff stops. The elevator is super scary. It made wierd noises everytime we used it. The staff is somewhat helpful, but a little creepy. Weird looks and awkward stares. The worst part was the size of our room. When we walked into the room, I opened up the door, and I literally a couldn't walk one step without bumping into the bed. I remember my wife telling me to get in, and i had to tell her, "I can't even move, because the bed's in the way. The room is not small, it's tiny. I had to rearrange the room so that we could have enough space for our luggage. The bathroom was also just as small. We didn't have nearly enough space to put all our toiletries. It's not close to Broadway theatres. It's just functional. But for a couple nights attending a conference, it was all I needed. Small but clean room, adequate towels and linens, decent TV, friendly service at the front desk. Busy location on Broadway, with good retail alternatives nearby. I had no security concerns. We recently stayed in NYC for a couple of days and we had the good fortune of booking the Hotel Newton as the place to stay. If your primary concern is a reasonably priced, clean, safe, and spacious place to stay while in NYC then this is the place for you! The room was MUCH bigger than other places I've stayed at in Manhattan. The area was safe, and no worried about getting our room rifled or anything like that. The staff was courteous and attentive. However, if in addition to all the stuff mentioned above you want all the frills of a $300 a night hotel then perhaps this isn't the place for you. Here's the list of stuff I loved: The room was HUGE! We were literally 100 yards from the 96th street subway station. We were literally 100 feet from a diner, and less than 100 feet from a drugstore, so we were basically covered. The room and facility was clean and has obviously been refurbished recently. The staff was great. Zero static about doing a late check-out. Now the stuff that wasn't so great. The elevator was tiny and slow. Water took quite awhile to heat up in the AM (instant it wasn't). Shortage of electrical outlets in the room. There didn't seem to be any thermostat in the room. The bottom line for us was that a hotel room should be a sanctuary from the city outside, and this place definitely fit the bill. The next time we're in town we'll be checking for openings at the Hotel Newton. read more

This is becoming my go-to hotel when I travel to NYC. It is a very good value for your money. The location is convenient and the neighborhood offers many conveniences. I have stayed here twice in the last year and have another upcoming visit next month. The rooms, and more importantly the bathrooms, are very clean. While the bedspread fabric/design may be somewhat outdated, I'm not really too concerned about that. Only cons are that during my June visit the window air conditioner, "just barely" kept the humidity out of the room. And the internet charge of $5/day is a nuisance, but not enough to keep me from coming back. read more

This hotel is cozy, from the almost-discreet main entrance between 94 & 95 streets to the very snug single rooms. But traveling solo and doing little else in my hotel room besides sleeping and changing clothes, it was perfect! The staff are helpful and courteous, and I especially appreciated their closet off the lobby for luggage storage, in case you've got a later flight. In terms of location, it's great. On the relatively quiet Upper West Side, the Newton is close to several interesting eateries, bodegas and coffeehouses. And to get anywhere else in the City, there's a 1/2/3 train stop just footsteps away, at 96 street. To top it all off, the price is fairly modest by NYC standards. I definitely recommend this hotel. Just keep an eye out for the brown awning; be sure you don't pass by on Broadway and miss it! read more

Stayed here last November at the recommendation of a friend. We were there for an extended weekend and had a superior queen room. It came with a refrigerator/microwave as well as private bathroom. The room was small but clean and provided what we needed while we were in town. It did take us an extra minute to figure out where the thermostat was. The staff members were friendly and the location is convenient to the subway (across the street!) but we also found it pretty convenient to request lyft/uber, too, from the location. It was more reasonably priced compared with surrounding hotels during that particular weekend. Would consider staying again. read more

Took a last minute trip and didn't have many resources to find a hotel. iphone was acting up so I called priceline. They said this place had decent reviews and the price was good at $150 ($175 after taxes) a night. So we blindly booked it. One important necessity was having our own bathroom. After asking, it seemed many hotels in upper Manhattan cheaper than $150 all had shared bathrooms and we didn't want to pay 200 + a night. Nothing fancy, not too shabby and gets the job done. It's in a great location, about 5 blocks from Central park. The subway is also right across the street. They offer parking in the Hertz parking lot for $27 a night. Since we spent very very limited time in our room, this was perfect. If you only need a place to nap and freshen up, you can't go wrong here. If I had more time though, I would have done more research. Hotel kinda smelled like curry too. Must have been the restaurants next door. read more

The price is not bad for the money. I paid $150 CAD per night for a Superior room by going through Hotels.com. I think it came with a Queen Sized bed. We got a rollout which costs $25 USD a night. The room was a good size and came with a TV and cable. The bathroom seemed clean and comfortable. The unfortunate thing that happened was that the electricity went off and on for a bit and then the AC went out just before midnight. A quick call to housekeeping. They took a while to solve the problem by using an extension cord but we were super tired after a long day in the city. Hopefully they get their wiring sorted. Also, beware. There was a stain on my duvet so make sure to inspect your bedding before you climb in. Also the wifi is not free at all even in the lobby (which they advertise to be free) but wifi is easy to find in New York. read more

We were on our NYC-Provincetown-Boston trip and my friends were trying to plan out a place to stay at that wasn't outrageously expensive. We chose Hotel Newton because the rate was reasonable and was just a half-a-block from the 96th Street Station (Lines 1, 2, 3). It was extremely convenient getting to Times Square and all the parts of Manhattan. The room was very clean with a decent-size LCD television. Overall, I enjoyed it. The biggest downside to Hotel Newton is that it doesn't have complimentary internet and the elevator is so slow. read more
