As a librarian, you know I had to stay here. I went in fully expecting a fun, book-themed hotel and secretly wondering if it might be a little gimmicky. I was so happy to be wrong. The Library Hotel is every bit as charming as people say, but what really makes it special is the team. I arrived by car while the building was hidden behind scaffolding, and the front desk was incredibly kind and patient, helping guide me to the loading area so I didn't spend my afternoon circling the block. Housekeeping was so gracious and helpful throughout my stay, the bartender at Bookmarks very kindly helped my friend carry our drinks down to the room, and checkout took less than 30 seconds. Every interaction was warm, thoughtful, and genuinely welcoming. The themed rooms are such a fun touch (I loved seeing how each one was inspired by a different subject), but I also have to give a shout-out to the practical things. I took a few work video calls from my room on the 12th floor, and the Wi-Fi was ridiculously good - honestly stronger than the Wi-Fi in my own house when I'm sitting five feet from the modem. Not a second of lag. The TV also had a ton of premium channels, which was such a fun surprise after long days exploring the city. And finally, a standing ovation for the real MVP: the air conditioning. New York was basically a sauna while I was there, and every time I walked back into my room I was greeted by the most glorious arctic blast. It was so good that my friends ended up wanting to hang out in my room and order dinner instead of going back out into the heat. Perfect stay from beginning to end. I was excited to stay here anyway, because of course it was on my bucket list, but the stay was so quiet and lovely that I am blown away. I got a petite room since I was traveling alone which I would not recommend for a couple, but for me it was perfect. The bathroom area was the best part and not at all an afterthought. They knew women would be coming and they nailed it, down to the magnifying mirror. Whenever you get to spend time with other book lovers, it's a plus, so I also very much loved being able to talk to people in the common room on the 2nd floor. Often times NYC misses this in their hotels. The books here aren't anything you really want to read so bring your own books but all in all 5+ stars for me! read more

The Library Hotel has a lovely vibe and is a nice place to come back to after a long day of work in New York. Fellow bibliophiles will especially appreciate the concept of this book-laden bolthole. I really enjoyed being able to pop into the Reading Room at any time and get tea, water, fruit, and other snacks. The hotel's bar, Bookmarks, is a lovely space on the 14th floor to meet a friend for drinks, but make sure to get a reservation before heading up. Each floor of the Library Hotel is dedicated to one of the ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal system. My room was 800.003 Poetry, which is a petite room with one full bed. And when I say petite, I mean it! Think room for a bed and little else. But this is NYC so I didn't need much more. If you want to be in Midtown Manhattan, the Library Hotel is a perfect choice. read more

The snowstorm that hit the eastern half of the US paralyzed everything but The Library hotel. We've stayed here several times before, and this time was spectacular: warm and inviting, calm in the storm outside. Really wonderful hotel for anyone visiting the city or for a "treat" staycation. The rooms are smaller, but it is New York, so that's to be expected. The hotel was very clean, and the amenities were top notch, and felt luxurious (coffee, snacks, great decor, very nice bathroom amenities in the room). What really stands out, though, is the service from this team. They gave me a personal call in advance to confirm my reservation, for starters, and double checked if there was anything I needed. They also were so lovely to my partner and I as we celebrated my anniversary, and all the staff were extremely welcoming and kind at all times. Finally, I accidentally left my glasses in our room, but I gave the front desk a quick call, and not only had they found them, but they were very kind and made me laugh about the whole thing. One of my favorite hotels in New York City. It's in the heart of everything in Midtown- near Times Square, Bryant Park, Grand Central Station, Radio City Music Hall, etc. Although it's in the center of the craziness, it feels like a cozy little getaway. This place is a very cool hotel with a different vibe than anywhere else I've been. Every room represents a part of a card catalog--we stayed in the poetry room. The room was filled with books across different bookshelves dedicated to that topic. I did crack open and read a few pages from a few different books. The focus on books over a TV is a really nice one compared to most hotels. The rooms also feel like a home library in the nicest possible way with dim lights, dark wood tones, and just generally very cozy. They are (like most hotel rooms in New York City) quite small and the normal room even has a full bed instead of queen, which is small even by NYC standards. There's a common reading room where there's a wine and cheese event that happens every afternoon/evening and a breakfast that happens every morning as well as walls and walls of books that you can pick up, read, and take back to your room if you want. There's a rooftop patio which feels like the garden in the sky that it is. It's open to the public as a bar/restaurant after a certain time, but only for hotel guests before then. It was a little awkward when we brought our own bottle of champagne up to share while the bar was open, but the hotel said it was fine and we really enjoyed it. The location is really hard to beat just behind Bryant Park and the main branch of the NYC Public Library. It's on top of the subway and conveniently located in between Midtown (where you're likely to go see a show) and Penn Station (where you're likely to be getting into NYC). The only negatives really are the room size (mentioned above) and the price, which isn't too exorbitant, but still a good notch above the going rate for a similar hotel room without the extra flavor. We got a special and it was still $300/night for a very small room with a full bed and no view. read more

After my wonderful stay last weekend, I found myself in NYC again and decided to stay at Library Hotel again. I loved it so much the first time! Normally I'll use Expedia or HotelTonight to get a deal, but I was happy to pay full price to come back to (what I thought was) a gem. I booked a standard room again and was not upgraded this time. I didn't care either way as I was by myself and don't need that much space... BUT, I will say the standard room is a LOT different than the upgrade one. This room felt very cramped and had the space of a normal NYC hotel room. It was a bit dark, uninspired, and actually felt a bit depressing. Also, an hour after I got there, I had to go back to my home in PA. I checked in at 3pm, left at 4pm, and the manager on staff wouldn't give me even a partial refund or credit after I paid the $333 (plus $25 resort fee). That was a bit of a bummer, since I would've been happy even to get hotel credit. I hate to write this review since I had such a fantastic experience the first time, but... it is what it is. read more

The Library Hotel is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed on and let me tell you why. They have a floor called the "reading room"which is a lounge with an espresso machine open 24 hours a day with all the special milks they have a fridge stocked with seltzer water and Ginger ale available 24 hours they also have bananas bottled water assorted nuts available 24 hours which was an incredible touch that I truly appreciated. My room was cleaned every day with fresh towels. This I also greatly appreciated. My only complaint is that I reserved the petite room which for me felt a little small....aesthetically it was super cute just tiny so next time I will get a standard size room. The location was located 1 to 2 blocks away from Grand Central Station which was really cool because we rode the subway several times. If you visit the 14th floor bar and you purchase two drinks you will get a free cheese board. I will happily stay at this location again and again. read more

I absolutely loved my stay, and will come back if I ever go to New York City again. When we checked in, I was told that they were probably done with wine and cheese hour, but the gentleman offered to bring me some wine and cheese up to my room. I declined, but checked on the second floor, and was greeted by a sweet young woman who offered me a glass of Prosecco. Friendly and attentive staff, with one of the gents in the lobby who always greeted us by name. I got a small room, which I expected, and it was very charming and cozy. I had commented on our trip being an early birthday getaway with my husband while we had the chance, and I had a sweet gift waiting for me when I arrived and a very nice note left on the counter. There were also a couple of bottles of water in the mini fridge under the tv set. The room was a bit warm, but that was nothing that a flip of the adjustable thermostat couldn't fix. There were also fully functioning windows to the side of the bed and in front of the bathroom that I had used to quickly get the steam out after showering. (There's no fan in the bathroom) They have a lovely continental breakfast in the morning, and a wonderful espresso machine in their Reading Room on the second floor that is available 24/7, with cookies and coffee available during the times between breakfast and wine and cheese hour. It was our first time in NYC, and this was the best hotel with the most perfect location for us. read more

I really like this boutique hotel. Upon arriving, the staff was very attentive while they checked us in. They made the process very easy. The Junior Suite was very spacious especially for Midtown Manhattan. The bathroom was decent. The bed was comfortable with plenty of nice pillows. We stayed in the Biography room with plenty of biographies ranging from Robert Frost to Rob Lowe (spoiler: he doesn't go into enough detail about the porn movie he made). We had a corner room so there were petty of good views os the city. Lastly, the room fridge was nice and empty so you could go to the nearby CVS and get things for your stay, which I find preferable. My wife is a bookie (not the type that takes bets on games but the type that reads up to 100 books per year). Therefore I thought I would take her on a trip to a place where a bookie would love - the Library Hotel. It was on the expensive side, but that was fine because I expect niche places to come at a premium. I also expect niche places to go above and beyond when it comes to customer service. In the service area, it was hit and miss. Some employees, like the bellhop, were great. My disappointment was in two regards. First, ordered a special "enhance your stay" package called Guilty Pleasure. This package came with a Books by the Foot bundle of about 10 curated books. I told the hotel employee who assisted with this that she has an MFA in creative nonfiction and she reads a lot, therefore how would we handle it if she already read a book. The response was I could take the book she read to Strand Bookstore where they were purchased. As luck would have it, there was one book she already has, so I needed to replace it/ Not being from NY, I had no idea how close or far Strand was from the hotel. Well, it was 1.5 miles away. That left me with a choice of Lyft, train, or walk. Not wanting to further expose myself to coronavirus, I decided to walk. Now great service would have suggested that they would assist me with getting it replaced, but that was not an option they decided to explore. What made it worse was that after the 30 minute walk, I had to wait 15 minutes at the register while the employees tried to figure out what to do with me. You see, they didn't want to let me exchange the book without a receipt. I had no receipt because Library Hotel bought the books. Library Hotel didn't want to exchange the book for me so I had to do it myself. Library Hotel did not give me the receipt or call Strand to tell them I was coming. So I had to wait. Eventually I called the hotel and they, in turn, called Strand. I'm glad they did that much, but the whole experience was the opposite of great service I expect from pricey niche hotels. They also put us in the Photography Suite. The room was nice, but my wife didn't care to look at any of the books. Why? Because her genre is creative non-fiction. She also likes foreign books, which the hotel knew because I also told them this in advance. A great experience would have been to put us in a suite that had books more closely akin to her literary interest. Photography is about as different from creative non fiction as I can imagine. Except, well, that photos can be creative, and if you don't doctor them up I suppose they are a variation of non fiction. I guess... This hotel has lots of nice things about it (nice 2nd floor lounge, lovely rooftop bar and relaxing area) I just hope they pay more attention to the little details to take the experience from average to slightly above average all the way to exceptional. Oh, and when people are trying to be careful with the virus and have thoroughly sanitized the room, you may not want to slide notes under the door warning them that you reserve the right to enter every 24 hours despite the do not disturb sign. I already know you have that right, it's your hotel. But during a crisis people sometimes want to minimize their contact with others - even the housekeepers. read more

Selected this hotel for an anniversary trip and have never been more satisfied with a decision. Even before the trip, the booking team went out of their way to answer any questions and try to fulfill some requests (requested certain themes as a choice of rooms). I also let them know it was our anniversary. Not only did they remember and grant my first choice of room (mysteries!) but we also arrived to a lovely card from the staff and a bottle of wine on ice. The room (a suite) was super large, very clean, had amazing views of Madison Avenue and the 5th Avenue library (all suites do since they are all along the same side of the building) and was beautifully appointed. The room was mystery themed so all of the books were mysteries and the art was mystery themed as well. The bed was super comfy, the air conditioning was great, and the bathroom was lovely. I was surprised at the low level of noise we experienced despite our corner room facing Madison Avenue. The staff was lovely and despite covid taking away their normally complimentary breakfast (this was back in August of 2021), there were two spaces in the hotel for guests that were great. The rooftop is absolutely gorgeous and you can enjoy a drink inside or outside (they gave us a certificate for a complimentary cheese plate with the purchase of one of the rooftop lounge's library themed drinks). There is also a lovely library lounge full of books, with a piano, and an endless supply of water, snacks, fruit, as well as a coffee machine which made espresso drinks (cappuccino, espresso, latte, etc) which is available for guests 24/7 which is awesome. My only gripe would be that the bathtub was very slow to drain (like 20 minutes to drain fully from full) but honestly, that is to be expected since the building is historic and the pipes are probably old like most older buildings in NYC. But really, this was all inconsequential because the pros made up for this one very minor con. It's a splurge, the suite there, but so entirely worth it. read more

I just got back from another trip to NYC and once again, I stayed at the Library Hotel. This time, no flaws or issues at all. Last time I stayed here there was a temperature issue and they resolved that plus promised me an upgrade were I to visit again. I did and they did. My bed was a queen and the room was slightly larger to accommodate it. Otherwise it was the same exquisite quality. Before I even left, the hotel had called me about my upcoming stay. Wow! They asked me if I would like them to arrange a car and told me all the details, including cost. I was all for it and was very pleased with this additional service. I also tried their restaurant for the first time and was quite pleased with it. I love when there is a restaurant on site and room service available. I got in quite late on Friday night due to airline snafus. My car was right at the airport and the restaurant was still open. Yes, what a great way for a frustrating day to end. All the other amenities are still true in my first review. My second visit included all the excellent qualities and resolved the single negative one. Great job by a quality hotel. read more

We are sad to leave our sweet home-away-from-home! We spent 6 nights on our honeymoon here and we will absolutely be back. From superior service, attentive librarians, and quirky decor to the free breakfast and afternoon snacks on the second floor there was nothing we can complain about. The rooftop bar serves a mean cocktail and we slept with the windows open to enjoy street noise and a breeze. We stayed in the petite room...and don't let the snarky reviews dissuade you. We just returned from New York with a four night stay at the Library Hotel. We picked this particular property because we previously stayed at their sister property Hotel Giraffe and loved that place. We booked a junior king suite @ $600 per night. Sadly, the room really needed a refresh. It was a bit depressing. The furniture was old and outdated and the older wooded blinds let in way too much light at night. The worst part was the air conditioner came on about every 10 minutes and was so loud you had to turn the TV up and repeatedly turn it down again. Annoying especially at night when trying to get a good nights rest. The rooftop deck area was closed until 6 p.m. due to private events/meetings so we never got to enjoy happy hour. We asked one staff, who was guarding the elevator entrance, for ice and she looked at us like she never heard the word ice before. Don't think we'll return. I'm reluctant to write this review -- because it felt like we found a secret hotel and well, don't want the secret to get out. A frequent visitor to NYC -- we usually stayed further north and east - nearer to where my father lived. This was to be our first visit since he passed, and we decided to branch out a bit. After perusing hotels online for quite a while, we decided on the Library Hotel - loved the theme of the books. I arrived on a Wednesday - entered a lobby full of books - and went to check in. The staff was particularly friendly and accommodating - not something I'm used to in NYC. We all wanted a little more room -- so we booked two Junior Suites -- a bit higher priced -- but with a fabulous view of the NY Public Library - lots of space - and a lot of light. The bathroom was larger than most I've encountered in the city. The bed was super comfortable - my aching back appreciated it - and the room had a sitting area that was inviting. I was in the Fashion Design room -- and had a blast looking primarily at the picture books! My son arrived with his girlfriend on Thursday. They were given the Astronomy room - another suite, virtual duplicate of mine, with the same views and light. The Madison & Vine restaurant downstairs serves a decent breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- I think we had at least one of each meal. The convenience of an eatery in the building was much appreciated. The 2nd floor reading room was available 24 hours, with water, coffee, fruit and snacks. Available to all. We went to Bookmarks, the rooftop bar, on two occasions -- I loved the "Gone with the Gin" cocktail, my son preferred the 'Gatsby' and his girlfriend tried a bunch of different things. I was told that if you're staying in the hotel (Bookmarks gets a lot of business that is not staying there) - you receive a complimentary cheese tray if you order two drinks. We were thrilled with the quality of the cheese tray. Every employee with whom we engaged was friendly and helpful. We loved the location, easy walk to theater district, and to many other sites. We will definitely be back -- IF they have room! It's a small hotel and my son tried to book a return trip in October -- alas, no availability. read more

I stayed at the library hotel for one night after a recommendation from a friend and it was wonderful! We arrived early and the staff was incredibly nice, they completed our pre-check in and held our bags. Once our room was ready (Junior Suite with One King Bed) we went right up. The suite was tucked around a quiet corner of the floor with a great view of Madison Ave, and 41St. Room looked exactly as cozy and charming as it did on the website filled with books based on our section of the Dewey Decimal system. The 24 hour 2nd floor lounge was welcoming with pastries, fruit, coffee, and tea. The Wine & Cheese reception in the lounge was a tasty highlight. The rooftop bar was warm and inviting. The bar had a menu of literary themed drinks, we had the Autumn Mule and Critic's Choice and both were fantastic. Every staff member was helpful and kind during our stay and we has zero complaints. Every book lover should stay at this hotel at least once in their lives! Points of interest around the hotel include Byrant Park, The New York Public Library (which we could see from our room), Grand Central Station, The Chrysler Building, and Urbanspace Vanderbilt. Right outside of Grand Central Station, it's within walking distance from Times Square...but thankfully away from the major hustle and bustle of that area. The room was cozy, and the staff was so friendly! I love that they offer breakfast, snacks (hello coffee!) and a wine and cheese time (5-8 each night!). It really helped to curb cravings or give my sweet tooth a bit of satisfaction. Again, the staff was accommodating and knowledgeable with directions and things to do in the area, which is a big plus. Unfortunately, the staff did not love me as no action was taken when extremely expensive jewelry was taken from my room by the cleaning lady. A classic! You cannot rely on the management to be honest or support a customer who has just paid thousands of dollars. They would rather stick up for their cleaning lady who contributes very little compared to the $ I no longer give them. If you like books and a boutique hotel atmosphere this is the spot for you. Although it's a bit pricier than other options in the area, the amenities--complimentary snacks/drinks throughout the day, continental breakfast, access to rooftop bar, and a comprehensive happy hour spread--can't be beat. The location is excellent as well--walking distance to Grand Central/trains, Fifth Avenue shopping, Bryant Park, Times Square and, of course, the public library (shout out to Patience and Fortitude). My mom and I stayed here a handful of nights and found the room to be well appointed, if not spacious. For the size of the room, it might have been a good idea to dispense with the round table and small reading chair--as every bibliophile knows, bed is the best place to curl up with a good book, and there was no shortage of reading/lounging spaces throughout the hotel. There is not an on-site gym but passes were provided to the New York Sports Club, just up the street. I also appreciated the daily selection of complimentary newspapers (my favorite--the New York Times followed by a New York Post chaser). I would definitely return when in need of a treat in NYC. read more

I've stayed at the Library Hotel a couple of times for work trips and absolutely loooove it. The location is perfect, with a Starbucks directly across the street. The staff is super attentive and friendly. The rooms are cozy and well designed including a desk, closet, mini-fridge, suitcase storage and plenty of bathroom space. Each room is themed and stocked with a handful of books that correspond to each theme. The hotel has a "Reading Room" on the second floor with complimentary continental breakfast, a nightly wine & cheese reception, wi-fi, bathrooms, computers and printers, snacks, etc. The hotel also features a roof top bar if you're looking to get a little swanky! Review for the Bookmarks rooftop bar: I came here twice. Once with a girlfriend who chose this spot and another time with my new boo who also chose here. I know great people with great taste :) I love this rooftop bar. Every time I've gone the staff has been extremely nice, friendly, and talkative. The rooftop doesn't have an expansive view, but more of an apartment rooftop feel, which I really like. It's classy & cozy. Win-win. read more

The Library Hotel is not perfect. Our room was quite small, and the internet service was spotty. There was plenty to cheer about, however: Everything in our room was beautifully laid out for maximum utility. And the Library Hotel library on the second floor functions as a 24/7 elite concierge lounge that's available to all hotel guests. The library features an automatic espresso machine that pulls great shots, and it serves a fine breakfast in the morning as well as snacks and wine at the end of the afternoon. When I left the hotel, I got up at 4AM in order to be able to walk to my 5:30AM train in Penn Station. After I packed and left my room, I was able to down an espresso and a small croissant before I began my walk. (Full disclosure: I took a banana as well and ate the banana on the train.) The Library Hotel reminded me of the Washington Square Hotel, which I reviewed in 2016. ("This boutique hotel solves an interesting packing problem: how to get lots of tiny living quarters into a small volume.") My room was not a place where I could stretch out, but the availability of the library made up for the lack of space upstairs. read more

Was invited here to grab drinks with a former coworker and would have to say it's a pretty nice and quite place to grab a drink. I don't know anything about their hotels, but the bar is a nice spot to hit up after work. read more

I had a pleasant stay at the hotel. I stayed one night to be near work for a meeting and it was perfect. The room was small but super chic and comfortable. I loved the library them we'd all over the hotel. The best part of the stay was the reading room. I enjoyed the complimentary wine, fruits and cheese and the delicious breakfast was full of variety and the service is personable and top notch. All of the ladies were nice and always helpful. I loved the pineapple juices and luckily they're served throughout the day. The snacks are free and so is the breakfast which is an amazing gesture. This was definitely a last minute trip and I would recommend this hotel to friends and coworkers visiting NYC. Ps: Visit the rooftop if it's nice out. It's small but very nice. read more

My girlfriend surprised me with a stay at this gorgeous hotel during our recent trip to the city since she knows how much I adore books. The location in Midtown is within walking distance to Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park, the Empire State Building, and obviously the iconic New York Public Library. We were well-taken care of from the moment we checked in. The concierge encouraged us to drop our bags at the front desk and go out sightseeing since we arrived ahead of standard check-in time and called shortly after to let us know our room was ready early. We stayed in the Paintings room on the 7th floor, surrounded by books about Dali, O'Keefe, and other artists. The room was extremely clean, cozy, and had one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in! There were so many touches that made this a memorable and relaxing stay, like the breakfast, wine and cheese reception, turndown service, and super comfy bathrobes. My girlfriend proposed on the second night of our stay here, and we are so happy that the Library Hotel is part of our engagement story. We are looking forward to coming back many times in the future! read more
