The curriculum is not limited to reading and writing but covers diverse topics on science, math, geography, Spanish and so on and is taught in a way that's easily grasped by these young tots. Even during the pandemic, Shantha took every effort to keep the teaching moving along via online classes with a similar curriculum. I highly recommend this school.

The school is set in a lovely natural settings and the class sizes are small. Unfortunately, we experienced several major challenges this school year and have opted to transfer our daughter to a new school year because of them. Communication is poor. The Kirkland campus does not have a dedicated administrative assistant. All communication goes through the admin assistant at the Bellevue campus and then to the teachers at Kirkland. While there is a dedicated email address for each classroom, teachers do not check or reply to messages. And since there is no communication at pick up and drop off, there is no way to communicate with the teachers other than the two conferences throughout the school year. If an emergency arises, you will need to call the Bellevue campus and hope that someone answers the phone and is able to relay the message to the Kirkland campus. The school does not enforce its own sick policy. Students who showed up with snot streaming down their faces and persistent, barking coughs were allowed to remain in class. Our daughter missed more than six weeks of school because of this negligence. We had multiple conversations with the school director, and things would get better for a week and then return to their norm. In contrast, during our daughter's first year of preschool (at another school) she was sick once the entire year. We were not happy with some of the language our daughter picked up from the teachers. She began using the work "guys" frequently shortly after the beginning of the school year. She also learned a song with the lyrics "the little one stops to pray to heaven." Bullying on the playground was not address. There were two older boys in class who frequently put children 'in jail" and would not allow them to play on the playground (as reported by our child and several other parents). They also would not let the children play with certain toys on the playground. Bullying should never be tolerated and needs to be shut down asap. This year's class was incredibly young (many kids in diapers that could not talk, toddlers with snot streaming down their faces, etc.) and it made the school feel like a daycare. Our experience did not align with the price of tuition nor the experience we were sold. Bottom line, there are better Montessori options in the greater Kirkland area.

Although there was initially more turnover when she started, it seems to have become more steady and there is a longer-lasting relationship with the teachers. We didn't necessarily seek out the bilingual aspect of ECA when looking for a daycare, but I am thankful of the opportunity for my daughter to learn the Chinese language and culture even though we don't speak Mandarin at home. She surprises me with the amount she knows. Looking back, they were a bit more strict during the COVID years, but this is much appreciated as a parent. Although my daughter eventually did contract COVID, it was only at the peak of Omicron that it occurred. They had safety measures that straddled the line of being cautious but also fair to working families. The management has been communicative and transparent. When we have questions or concerns, they are always taken seriously and are open to feedback. We have been very happy with our experience here and don't hesitate to recommend other families to consider ECA.

We feel that ECA has done much more, along the lines of controlled learning. Not does he only have free play, but they really do believe that learning about the outside world is just as important. He's learned about continents, the 5 oceans, the solar system. And not only does he learn them in English, he's learned them in Mandarin as well. He has been given the ability to practice his cutting, pasting, writing letters, and number... but he's also been given the experience to learn how to make dumplings, and moon cake with his peers. The art that they do is also tied in to the subjects they are learning... which is how it should be done. They get to see, hear, and do.. which is essential in active learning. We don't speak mandarin at home. And being able to watch my child read mandarin words, sing mandarin songs, and reply to his teachers in mandarin... has been amazing. I can truly say that he speaks better mandarin than I can now. I've added a video to my review as a small sample of how much my son has learned reading Chinese at ECA. Also, once they are in pre-k, there are some days, where your kid gets to bring home, homework (not mandatory). Haha if that's your thing. My child loved it. And was proud to do the work "all by himself". I truly believe my little one has been able to grow a lot from ECA. And we're really happy about the staff, and the head school, Jenny. They have less turn over rates than our prior daycare, and the staff really seem to enjoy their time with the kids. The cameras are also always a nice touch to ease any parent's anxiety. School in their response claims my kids have never been part of the school: As mentioned in my original review, it is because they decided not to enroll our kids TWO WEEKS before we started. This is the whole point why we wrote the review.

The curriculum is so rich that I find it hard to enumerate completely. The bottom line is, the kids really love it and we see their amazing growth over time. My son's potty training went well when he turned 3. At home we followed the teachers' guidance to extend the training. The process was not easy, but the teachers' patience made it much less challenging. We'd definitely recommend this place.

The academic curriculum at this school is excellent, thoughtfully planned, and engaging. However, there are significant areas of concern, especially regarding communication and methodology. One of the biggest issues is the lack of transparency and communication with parents. You won't receive regular updates, pictures, or detailed reports about your child's day. If you have concerns or complaints, be prepared for delays of up to a week to get a response. The school's methodology also did not work for our child. It follows a strict and inflexible schedule that doesn't align with positive discipline or respectful parenting practices. For example, parents are encouraged to "sneak out" without saying goodbye during drop-offs, and decisions like potty training were made without consultation or consent. This lack of collaboration left us feeling excluded from key aspects of our child's care. Another major concern was the approach to discipline and emotional support. Our son showed clear signs of distress, returning home anxious and dysregulated daily for three months. Despite this, we weren't allowed to stay with him during the transition period to provide comfort. In one alarming instance, we overheard a teacher verbally humiliating our son, demanding he stop crying in a harsh tone. He even reported being physically pinched by the same teacher. Additionally, if there are changes in teachers, you won't be informed, nor will the new teacher be introduced. The director often criticized our parenting choices, such as the type of containers we used, how we dropped our son off, and even how we carried him. While the school works well for some families it was not a good fit for us. If you value respectful, nurturing environments and open communication, this is not the place for your child. Be aware that the school requires a year-long contract, and leaving early typically means continued payment. However, our experience was so negative that they allowed us to leave without penalty. In summary, the school might be suitable for families who align with its methods, but for parents seeking a gentle, child-led, and collaborative environment, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Our son started with Ms. Mariela at EBM last summer for camp (when he was 3 1/2), then began the 2015-16 school year there at three days a week. He has been so much happier at this school and we have been thrilled with the quality of teaching, the sense of community, and the pure love that Ms. Mariela and her staff give the students. Mariela exudes warmth and also provides firm boundaries. While the teaching is Montessori-based, my son is not lost in a world of pin pushing and cutting paper, as he was in his last Montessori school. He is also starting to speak Spanish (he has understood everything for many months, but is now starting to speak)...it's so exciting! I highly recommend EBM! read more

I have only positive things to say about EBM. My daughter attended for two years and she loved it. She still says she misses the teachers and asks when she can see them. I liked that the teachers cared for the students and showed them much love. I was really happy with the program and the education she received. Her Spanish, reading, writing and math all improved significantly. Once she joined a new school, we found that she was more advanced than many of the other kids, already having covered much of what was being taught. We are grateful for the time my daughter was able to attend EBM and how much she grew from her experience there. I would recommend it to anyone with young kids. read more

What truly sets this school apart is Teacher Monica, a rare gem in the Greater Seattle area. With over 30 years of Montessori teaching experience, she brings a depth of understanding, patience, and guidance that's incredibly hard to find. She also had a knack for recruiting compassionate and loving assistant teachers such as Rebecca, Lori, and previously Gnana, whom we greatly appreciated. While only a very select number of schools in the area have teachers with comparable experience, those schools tend to be quite large, and it's not always guaranteed that your child will be placed with one of their most seasoned educators. At Eastgate, the environment is more personal and intentional, and we felt confident that our daughter was receiving direct support from someone who truly understands Montessori principles and how to nurture each child's growth. They were great at keeping up with latest Covid recommendations from the state for daycares and communicating the updates to everyone as clearly as possible. My friends with kids elsewhere would ask me about KCS Covid guidelines, and were always so impressed with how well KCS managed the craziness of the past couple years. They would even hold her while she slept which was amazing. She progressed through each class really well thanks to the care, kindness, expertise and nurturing of the teachers. What we really loved was that they could accommodate the individual needs of our child in a way that helped her to make friends, while growing her skills and confidence. The focus on, kindness, life-skills and academics is perfect. Now that we've moved on to a public school we truly see the value of the school. Our daughter is reading more than a grade level above her class and doing math that is a grade level ahead of her class. She is testing higher in nearly every academic area than her peers. We feel we owe much of this to the work of the countryside teachers who were so dedicated to her. We recommend Countryside to any friends looking for schools.

I am just a little worried that when our 4 year will go to public school, she'll be bored since she has already learned all the letters of the alphabet this year. But, they do so much more than academic basics: it's the whole Montessori curriculum. I do wish they would go outside a bit more to play, but we make up for that at home. I also like that they don't charge an arm and a leg unlike some other options in the area that we explored and didn't like as much.

My daughter couldn't be happier to be at Les Lilas each day, and she has a love of learning and working that I never thought I would see at her young age. My daughter is in the preschool age group, but she is already learning reading skills, printing/cursive, and doing math, science and art in a way I've never seen other schools attempt. And she's doing it in both English and French. She has progressed in French by leaps and bounds compared to when she started at Les Lilas. We never really grasped what she was capable of, until her teachers showed us what she can do. Overall, I think the standout feature of this school is the teachers. The amount of thought they put into their work with each child is beyond comprehension. They make it look so easy. Our kids are not at Cascadia anymore, but they look forward to meeting teachers and other kids at every opportunity possible. Even after our kids graduated from the school, parents still try to keep in touch and help each other. We are pretty fortunate that our kids attended Cascadia and thankful to teachers and Mrs. Franklin.
