This store is a life saver!…read more We are contractors and had a job on Orcas Island. We had never been to Orcas before and were unfamiliar with the area. Before we set out for the island, I looked up local hardware stores (just in case). I found Island Hardware & Supply, called them to make sure they would have what we MIGHT need, hopped in the truck and got on the ferry. OF COURSE it turned out that we DID need some items, so we set off for the Hardware store. We got lost and ended up at the little hardware store in East Sound - we thought we were at the right store, but they didn't have any of the supplies we needed. We were pretty confused until I found out from a local resident that the little hardware store in East Sound is on North Beach Road, and the big hardware store (Island Hardware) is on West Beach Road. So we hopped back in the truck again, and set out to find Island Hardware. (yes, we got losat again...but eventually figured it out) We were so relieved when we located the store and were able to purchase the supplies we needed, because we were thinking that we would have to get on the ferry and drive to the home depot in Mt Vernon (that would have taken forever). Island Hardware had all the stuff we wanted, lumber, tools, big bolts, lag screws, plumbing supplies etc. They even have a couple of little gas pumps which was handy for us. We had the occassion to go back up to Orcas for round two of the job which was exterior painting. The paint we purchased needed to be re-tinted at the last minute. We remembered that Island Hardware had a paint department and took the buckets of paint to them with our fingers crossed. Even though we didn't buy the paint from them, they happily re-tinted it for us...I thought that was pretty generous and excellent customer service!

Conveniently located right at the ferry terminal, this little gift shop sells all types of gifts…read moreand souvenirs. They carry t-shirts, hoodies, hats, coasters, kitchen towels, books, toys, magnets, mugs and everything else you can think of to bring back home to remind you of your trip on the island. Prices are lower than most shops on Eastsound town and they have a large variety. The lady at the counter was friendly and engaging. A lady forgot to grab the toy from the counter after paying for it, and the cashier went to go find her. We even saw her walking through the lines of vehicles waiting to board with the toy in her hand. I hope she found her!

I'm not sure if the service providers are volunteers, but it has that vibe of kindness from the people working there. One of the senior customers had trouble paying with a credit card and the friendly staff has the patience to teach the person how to use the machine etc. It was really nice to see the support of patient education that supports autonomy.

There are several arts and…read morecrafts-type places in town and in my limited experience, Island Studios had the best selection and at fairly reasonable prices. It's also a handsome place with their various pieces well displayed. I was particularly impressed with their glass wall pieces and some wood boxes by a person on Orcas Island by the name of River Jim. I also thought that the owner was very helpful, especially since I'll probably buy one of River Jim's boxes in the future. Jane Y.'s experience is unfortunate, although a sometimes high shipping/handling charge for often fragile and uniquely shaped artistic objects is more common than not. And it is certainly something I expect and factor into my purchasing decisions. I'm also usually suspicious of Yelp reviews from a profile with no picture and only one pointed posting. I call this a "drive by".

It's just like their name says Marine and outdoor ! The store is huge and it's filled with great gear and supplies and tackle and more . Heather , the woman who showed us around , was so friendly and knowledgeable and very efficient . They had some of my favorite made in Alaska brands including Alaska Chics . Fishing season is just around the corner and this store has everything you need including good things from Hardwire Tackle (another great Alaska business .)

We went to the store to see if there were any clues and OMG I am SO glad we did. They have SO MUCH COOL STUFF! Marine gear, clothing, boots, hats, dry bags....I mean all the great stuff you might want for your fishing adventures. And they carry lots of Made in Alaska stuff! I'm happy it's nearing fishing season because stopping in here made me want to get lines in the water. Oh, they also have a shop dog and were super good about COVID protocols, masking etc.

You will also find San Juan /Friday Harbor shirts, jackets, sweats, keychains, magnets, mugs and stickers. I found a really nice set of buoyant glass floats for only $12.95 (found the same one online for $40)! Went back a few times to this store to pick up more items to bring back to friends. Their prices are lower than most souvenir shops and the couple who manages the store are locals who are friendly and very helpful. They did not hesitate to recommend points of interests and restaurants to try. They like tourists!
