Bob just completed the installation of our window gate. The window is the only one in our bedroom and it's the only one with a fire escape. Thus, in order to get through the summer, we had to purchase a portable AC unit since window units are illegal in this situation. Bob was able to create a custom gate for us that accommodates the AC pipe that has to vent out the window. The gate functions beautifully and I love that he leaves the top bars further apart so it allows the maximum amount of light to come through. After the installation, there was a portion of the gate that he was not completely satisfied with and so he even offered to just drop by with the additional part whenever he is back in Manhattan. Unfortunately, with only 1 window that had the fire exit right by it, the window had to be secured with a security gate that is FDNY approved. The place had the very ugly accordion gate. I felt like I was in a prison cell, and much of that old gate blocked out the light from the window. I had to replace it but I wanted a gate that did not make me feel like I was in prison. I've been having security concerns and had been out of work for less than a year, spent the last of my unemployment benefit on the EZ Out Fire escape and still had the same problem. Fast forward almost 2 years Ive spent over 2500 maximizing security in my house installing grills on every other window, upgrading locks, and installing an alarm system --only to discover that the fire escape gate is not secure; Having wider spaced slots on top and smaller slats at the bottom--that I recently discovered my hand can still easily pass through. I installed 2 shelves toward the top of the gate but am still dissatisfied, out of work and had been on disability due to the same security concerns. If you are concerned about safety look for a more uniformed gates with smaller slats (that hands won't be able to penetrate). Good luck! read more

Bob has just installed gates on sections of a bay window facing a fire escape. And, WOW! They are so much better than the oversized, clunky, ugly gates I had there before. They are white and cover only those parts of the windows that I needed covered, so there is much more light coming through. And the gate leading to the fire escape is much easier to operate. If a fire ever occurs, I'll be relieved to have this gate there. As for Bob himself, I found him to be friendly, yet also professional. He first came to look over the window and take measurements, and I found him easy to talk to; he cheerfully answered all my questions, and I appreciated the honesty and frankness of his answers, as well as his expertise. Well, everyone had nice things to say so it's unfortunate that I had a completely different experience. Bob quoted me a price over the phone after speaking to me and seeing photos of the window. After he came to measure, his price was more than double what he quoted! I tried to understand why he would do that but he insisted I "misunderstood" him on the phone or that he never quoted that price and that he never saw the photo of the window. Easy out was very efficient. Once I sent an e-mail, they came and measured, then gave me a day they would come and install. Installation took all of five minutes! The gate looks incredible. However, the best thing about this business is that, after I installed the gate in one apartment, I found a horrible roach infestation and needed to move apartment (I hadn't even moved in my furniture yet). We had an existing flat window gate installed in a bit of an odd sized window, and wanted to replace it with bars that could accommodate an air conditioner. After calling around, we were a little bit dismayed at the cost of replacing the entire gate, but Bob offered to do it by just cutting around only the lowest part of the parts and just adding the AC box. This was a bit of a non-standard job, but it took just 1 phonecall, 1 day to measure and 1 day to install for a far cheaper price than any quote we had received for the entire gate, and the gate looks and functions great.
