This is a beautiful shop. I happened to be walking by after stopping in next door at Tous le Jour. Very enticing displays from the window drew me in. Items are displayed by category throughout the store. They are also made into really cool "room" areas. For example, the kitchen area had items like a stove, dishwasher, and all the utensils you could need. The staff were kind and helpful. One of them helped me measure a chair to see if it would fit under my desk. There are all sorts of designer clothing and handbag items too. I really liked the photography exhibit with all of the projector slides! Whatever you are looking for, you can find an amazing variety of vintage items at this special shop. read more

People who work here are nice and helpful, but their stuff is super over priced. Some of the stuff has stains or ripped and I know it's "vintage" but to put dirty or damage close out with a heavy price tag is kind of crazy to me. Once in a while you'll get a good find with a decent price but its not often. read more

Beautifully curated vintage home store -- the kind that's spiritually soothing and invigorating to browse because every little thing is delightful. Stock runs heavily mid-century, but isn't limited to the "modern" style of period -- there are lots of goodies that are The Fascinating Thing On Your Grandparents' Shelf That You Weren't Allowed To Touch. Most unusual in my experience is the section of fabric (not linens, though it carries those, too, and they're all adorable). I am beyond thrilled to have a convenient source of vintage fabric for small projects. I'm looking forward to many repeat visits when I feel more affluent (prices are reasonable but it does eventually add up if you keep adding this thing and that thing and ohhhhh loooooook isn't THAT one just perfect! to the day's purchases). read more

This is one of the best vintage/antique shops I've ever been to. They have a gorgeous array of vintage clothing (especially dresses) and it's all organized neatly by color and type. There's also a ton of old fabric and yarn, buttons, knobs, dishware, lamps, furniture, art...pretty much everything under the sun. But unlike so many other shops that are overflowing with useless junk, English Building Market seems to have a carefully curated selection and the owner has an eye for truly beautiful, unique pieces. And the prices remain reasonable. I try to come here as often as possible, because there's always new merchandise and I find the selection and layout to be truly inspiring. read more

It looks small from the front window, but this store is large, and I could easily spend hours there. It's one of the few antique stores I've found that has a good stock of vintage kitchen stuff. I could've taken so much more home, but my tiny kitchen couldn't accommodate it. The prices were extremely reasonable. I can't wait to go back and do more exploring! read more

I'm absolutely obsessed with this vintage shop. They have a wide variety of price points, from the outright steal to the collector's find. They concentrate heavily on home goods (all the clothes are at their sister store), although they have a smattering if other things. Need a great set of vintage wine glasses? A baking pan? Funky dish towels? Old postcards for an art project? They've got you covered. The woman who owns the store is super nice and very knowledgeable. It's my favorite spot to take an hour to browse or swing by to grab a quality replacement for a kitchen tool. Love it, and will likely be back soon. read more

I can't believe I had not ventured into this great shop until now. I received a warm genuine greeting from the owners and spent an hour leisurely rummaging through vintage clothing. Found a great jacket, a scarf from the 70s and an even cooler top from the 60s. On the way out I found the perfect Mother's Day gift. Gold - rimmed wine glasses in perfect condition. What a great little antique shop in downtown New Haven! It's quite an unexpected find, and a charming one at that! The store is actual a lot bigger than expected, and they have a wide array of antiques, from furniture, to jewelry, to books to kitchen wares. This place is like a museum! Amazing antique finds all carefully placed around the store. Looks like you are walking through a museum of curiosities rather than a store. things are a borderline overpriced, but it's so cute that you can overlook the few extra dollars you are being charged per item. They have mostly antiques throughout the store, and a small vintage clothing section in the back with hats and shoes included. also in the back there is an adjacent yoga studio, though you can't actually see the people practicing, you can hear the instructor lead classes while you shop which is why you are asked to browse quietly and without making too much noise. read more

Interesting space that promises alot but sadly doesn't deliver. What I find jaw-dropping are the prices they charge. Perhaps they think their customers don't know they are getting ripped-off -beats me. Best to only frequent on their 1st Fridays where ONE item is 50% off-not exactly a deal-probably even more than it should be even with the discount! Their sister vintage clothing store a few doors down isn't much better. You are basically paying for someone else to go to tag sales for you which is the caliber of stuff-go do your own hunting and save on the markup! read more

Like many others, I was very pleased to discover this shop. I bought a shirt and a woolen skirt. The shirt cost $10 and the skirt cost $30. As soon as I got home I held the skirt against a light, and to my despair, I discovered multiple moth holes. I hadn't been able to see them in the dimly lit changing room especially since the fabric was a busy woolen tweed. I was very sad about this turn of events, but I decided to return the skirt. I went to the shop the next business day to return it and I was told that all sales are final and that I should have known better. I beg to differ. Damaged clothes should be on a separate rack, and selling clothes with holes in them (at $30 a piece!) is fundamentally deceitful. I was bullied into accepting store credit by the owner, who refused to repay me for the skirt, which I returned within a business day of purchase. The whole experience was insulting and the owner's conduct was in very poor taste. read more

The place is very cool! Huge space filled with antiques and old junk from yard sales, curated into small nooks: a little kitchen area, a small library area, a sewing and crafts area, a few dining room sets, etc. There are vintage clothes in the back and a bunch of jewelry in the front. Prices are a little high for some stuff, but it's a nice selection, and you could probably find whatever you're looking for, from handkerchiefs and sewing notions($10-15) to sputnik chandeliers ($600) and saarinen dining sets ($400/ tulip chair). They have a high turnover rate, which is impressive since the space is huge. I'd check it out if you're looking for a cute something to pull your credenza vignette together, or for just plain old inspiration. Definitely my favorite store in New Haven to stroll though. read more

I've become a regular at this place, the woman who owns it is always willing to work with you regarding the price. I feel she is fair with her pricing, somethings are a bit high, but considering the location, time of year and the desire for such pieces I understand her pricing. If something you're interested in sits in the store for many months, and she knows you're interested in it, she'll eventually work with you about a comfortable price for both, so it's a win, win for everyone. I've purchased many items from her one being a dining room table, which after many attempts and with her help, we couldn't make it fit in my car, we even took it apart, she so graciously offered to put it into her SUV and followed me home, as well as helping me bring it into my house! I live in East Haven, but still how awesome is that. I'm always stopping in to see what's new, the inventory is always changing and being updates with cool finds. read more
