My brother Prescott, my family, and I would stop in for that coffee and hot chocolate machine and whatever gear we needed for the day. What really stayed with us, though, was not just the stop, but Buck and Herschel. They were always friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely focused on taking care of people. We come from a ski racing background back East, so we have always been particular about fit and performance. You feel it immediately when something is off, and you remember the people who get it right. It has been really rewarding to watch them build Olympic Bootworks over the years and develop things like the Heel-N-Loc footbed. It simply works. You feel more secure, more comfortable, and it has made a noticeable difference not only on the mountain but even in my son's soccer cleats. That level of consistency over this many years is rare. If you want your feet properly supported and your gear dialed in, Buck, Herschel, and the team are the people to see. For me, this place is more than a shop. It is one of those rare places that has been part of my family's journey for a long time, and that means something.

Maybe this "issue" is about expectations....when we went in the store it was busy, some of the stuff was in disarray, and the store was a bit cramped--but we came to get deals!! Not pay a premium for service and spaciousness! We got brand name clothes in great condition for our kids at pretty unbelievable prices. In the Bay Area, where we are from, you can't find anything comparable to this--we will definitely be back.

Over the 40 years I've been skiing, I have not met anyone with more knowledge of the human foot & what a good ski boot fit is like and that includes several good orthopedic surgeons. What makes Cosmo great is his personal tireless efforts centered on the individual. Where other shops may have 2 or 3 boot fitters, with Cosmo Footwerks, Cosmo IS IT - he is a craftsman. So if there is a line of people waiting to see him and he is pressed for time or has other priorities, then someone's service may take a hit. But if you schedule with him, be on time & be patient you will come away with happy ski feet - priceless! More than anyone I known in this sport, Cosmo stands behind his work. You can come back as many times as needed to get your fit right. Not only does he continue to work with you but he remembers your particulars, even if it was some time ago. Pat is a true gem in the ski world. He does great work, charges a fair price to all (not just locals). If you go to see him, call ahead and scheduled a time when he's not so busy. If necessary take a day during the week, you will enjoy the shop and Truckee when it is not so crowded with weekenders.

When Bruno was the mascot and Northstar was nothing but a 2 story arcade area and retail was unheard of and The ticket office was on the roadway; 50 yards from the parking lot and Northstar was # 3 of 3 resorts; the lowest on the totem pole measured against Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows and The cafeteria served ONLY hot cocoa, coffee and boxed pastries and The ski rentals (ski, boot and pole) included ski bibs and Snowboards were non existent and Maximum lift passes priced out in the $40 range with 4000 skiers maximum per day and Gondola rides to Mid Mountain was FREE Today!!!! .... Pets are not allowed and The Ritz Carlton (a Lawrence Welk Timeshare Facility) and The Village with retail and eateries and Patron Parking in 5 different locations and Ticket Office located in the Village (a 20 minute walk from and if you are in patron parking) and Mikuni Restaurant (now closed) was the first sushi bar restaurant and North Star Gondola (not Ritz Carlton gondola) ride to mid mountain is $30 Valet So this is progress (inspite of the development moratorium in the Lake Tahoe area) They have little wagons for you to tow you equipment and gear from the base of the fun to your car or hotel or condo They have valet service if you don't want to walk The Ice Skating Rink is open through almost the end of spring. They have coffee and soft drink bars in kiosk style around the perimeter of the Village Lift Tickets are in the 3 digit price tag Despite the increase in cost, development and upscale change, Northstar remains a comfortable place to visit. While my review is the focus of the winter and spring sports, please know they have a golf course and trails for mountain biking in the summars and fall. A destination location for sure!

Birkenstocks - Fully in stock, but rarely on sale. Next time they are on sale for $99.99, I will buy two pairs. And on their website they do not even carry the Honolulu Birkenstocks... Woven Loafer - Finally found one I liked at Dillards, except for the color. There were NO woven loafers here at all. Just ordered 4 shoes from DSW, as they sell the same/similar brands for less. Will update if needed. They also have a slightly larger online selection. Atmosphere - Good size, clean organized. Open 7 days a week from 10am to 8pm and until 6pm on Sundays and Mondays. Plenty of mall parking. Service - Self service. Price - Reasonable. Birkenstocks have price control, so it almost doesn't matter where you buy them from.
