My family has been going to Edelweiss for more than 3 generations; over the course of 40 years, I have consistently bought chocolate here and never returned a single item. Recently I purchased a bag of chocolate pretzels that unfortunately were stale. I tried to return them to the Brentwood store and they wouldn't take them back or replace them. They had melted in my car from the heat, but the reason for the return was that they were stale, not that they were melted. When I spoke to the owner, Madelyn, she refused to replace the item, chalking it up to a "business decision." When I asked her how it was good business not to replace an item that was stale especially for a customer of 40+ years she told me she loved me and my family but it was still "business". Regardless of whether they were melted or not, a customer of 40 years should be given the benefit of doubt, especially as this was the first return anyone in our family has tried to make in all these years. Needless to say, this place no longer has any soul. It's been infected by greed and there no longer appears to be any decency left there. I hate to write this review because I grew up going here but its truly a sad state of affairs at Edelweiss as the store simply no longer cares about its customers (even it's most loyal and long standing ones). read more

I have heard about the history and the good quality of Edelweiss Chocolates, so I decided to take a chocolate tour to visit them and test their famous chocolates. Being in a group of 20 people, I hardly hard any time to look around in their store. There were few boxed chocolate-covered cookies set on the far end of their counter with a "Buy One Get One Free" label right next to them. Those looked very appealing to me, so I grabbed one box of Peppermint Oreo and one box of Ginger Snap to take home with. When I verified the price with the cashier, she told me they were on "buy one get one free" special. But when she rang up my total, it was $38.15, I was shocked. I had to verify the price again. When I asked her, "Does one box cost $38? " She said yes. At that moment, our tour guide already left the store and moved on to the next stop. Therefore I was in a big rush to get out of the store so that I could catch the tour group I came in with. I rushed out of the store with two boxes of expensive chocolate-covered cookies. When I got home, I realized the cashier didn't even give me an itemized receipt. All I got back was a credit card sale slip with a total of $38.15 on it. I checked, on their website, the prices of those boxed cookies I bought, I found out a box of 14-piece Peppermint Oreo & Ginger snap is $28. If it was on a "buy one get one free" special, my total purchase should have been $28 plus tax. I could not come up with $38.15 they charged me. Worst of all, after eating one cookie from each box, I had upset stomach which kept me awake all night. When I took my first bite out of the ginger snap, I noticed it was hard as a rock, I should have stop eating it, but I honestly believed in the quality of Edelweiss Chocolates, so I continued eating their cookies. I regret that I bought those cookies that made me sick! I was going to share them with my family, I changed my mind after going to bathroom multiple times last night and all day today. Now I understand why those cookies were specially priced. Who knows how old they are and how long ago Edelweiss Chocolates made them?! I find it unbelievable that the reputable Edelweiss Chocolates over-charged me for spoiled cookies which should have been discarded. I hope this review will alert everyone who is interested in Edelweiss Chocolates. Please be aware of the freshness of their products, even when they tell you they made their chocolates fresh daily! ***UPDATE TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW: The owner of Edelweiss Chocolates, Madeline, called me and invited me back to her store for a tour. Her explanation of the overcharge was, "The price of the buy-one-get-one-free deal is $35.00 plus tax." So I asked her why the same product was advertised with a sale price of $21.00, which was marked down from the regular price of $28.00 on their website. She told me that's the price for a single box, if I want the second box for free, I had to pay an additional $14.00 for it. I also questioned her about the quality of her ginger snap cookies, she commented that those cookies are supposed to be really hard. According to her, they purchased those cookies from Whole Foods. The marshmallows are the real specialty, made just feet from the shelves from which they will enter your box and mouth shortly thereafter. So the other day I had some friends over and one of them brought over a box of chocolates and it was not very good. I think the chocolates were Russel Stover's or Whitman's. It did however, give me the craving for the finest chocolates I've ever had which were here at Edelweiss. I discovered Edelweiss while I was in college. The shop is right next to a great italian sandwich shop. What got me hooked was the fresh fruit dipped in chocolate. Sure I've had chocolate strawberries, but that was probably the extent of the fruit dipped in chocolate, plus it was always just chocolate. Here they have sliced bananas dipped with chocolate and then dipped in nuts or sprinkles. Perfection. They also have clusters of green grapes covered in chocolate and clusters of raspberries dipped in chocolate. They have other fruit too, but those are my favorite. Aside from the fruit, my favorite piece is the marzipan (almond paste) which comes either in dark chocolate or milk chocolate. I personally prefer the milk chocolate and it's harder to find than the dark chocolate. I've tried so many different chocolates over the years here and while I like some more than others, I've never been disappointed. It's not cheap here, but it's definitely worth it. The service here is very sweet (ha!) and helpful. It can be difficult deciding how to fill your box, so it's nice that the people helping you are patient and full of good suggestions and very knowledgeable about the products they carry. Even when the store is crowded, they don't rush you and you never have to wait long. Parking here is awesome; they've got a lot in the back and there's also a parking structure literally across the street which I appreciate in this neighborhood. Let's start with the dark chocolate, because honestly, that's what we're going here for. They offer a pretty wide array of products for a fairly small space. Here's a little information about the location. 1. It is famous for its marshmallows. The original owner used to come in before everyone else and make the marshmallows herself so that her recipe would remain a secret. 2. It inspired the I Love Lucy Chocolate Factory scene. 3. I was told that if you come in during the weekdays starting at 10 AM, you can ask to see how the chocolates are actually made! However, I am not sure on when that time ends. 4. Famous celebrities such as Madonna, Elvis, Oprah, and many others have ordered chocolates and marshmallows from here. I was able to sample their milk chocolate and dark chocolate covered marshmallows. It was simply amazing. The only way I could describe it is that it was like biting into a mini cloud. It was a little too sweet for my taste, but a cold glass of milk would have been perfect with it. To be honest, the prices are a little higher than what you would expect from desserts, but it is definitely worth it. My husband and I visited 5 chocolate shops today. Super fun. I was most excited to visit this shop because it inspired one of my favorite episodes of I Love Lucy. It is a cute shop. But it also feels a lot like a general candy store with its jelly beans and gummies and such. The valentine heart boxes were fun, some being over the top in the best way. There were several customers in the store, and things felt a bit stressed. (The other stores seemed to manage this day before Valentines Day much better) I picked a small box to fill, the person helping me honestly seemed clueless. Like maybe she was someone mom coming to help for the day? Anyway, I asked for 4 chocolates specifically and she put the wrong chocolate in every single time. My husband was tall enough to see her doing this so he corrected her...4 times. Also, it was not clear if we were filling this box for one price or if this was weighed? I still dont know for sure. Another employee pointed out that I could fit two smaller pieces in so she added them. As for the tastiness, it is delicious as most chocolates are, but it is not different enough to make it back just for these chocolates. If I was in the area, I would stop in, but I would not drive to Beverly Hills just to get the chocolates. (I would for some of the other chocolate stores we visited) read more

My grandmother used to take me to Edelweiss after school once a week for a treat, as she did with my mother when she was a child. Even though she passed several years ago, I've kept up that tradition; we would always get one caramellow and one piece of something else. I almost don't want to write a review so that they don't get busier, but this place is an absolute favorite. The pretzels are the best ever...totally addicting. Favorites: the orange peel (Arancini), French Truffle, caramellow and English Toffee. They also make caramel corn that's out of this world, fresh roasted nuts (almonds, pecans and cashews), peanut brittle, fudge and rocky road! Edelweiss has two claims to fame: being old(1942) and being the inspiration for an "I Love Lucy" episode. Please note that I did not mention the chocolate. Edelweiss is a family owned chocolate shop which still makes all of its chocolates in shop. Many of their equipment dates from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. I was allowed to visit the back and take a look at how they make their chocolates; this shop still grinds their own beans, mix their own chocolate and dip/decorate their treats. Its actually kind of amazing how much they squeeze in back there. But once you dismiss the history and the quaint "small family" vibe of the shop, the chocolate is just nothing special. One of their well-known varieties is their chocolate-covered marshmallow treats. I bought one of each, and while the marshmallow portions were light and fluffy, the chocolate itself was...meh. It's milky sweet and smooth...but there's nothing special. The dark chocolate is the same-smooth, slightly bitter chocolate used for all of their dark chocolate varieties. This ubiquitousness applies to all of the other varieties as well. This same chocolate is used for everything else-the fruit dippers, the truffles, the creams, etc. Once you've had a couple of them from each category, you've had them all. There's no variation. The fillings and chocolates quickly become dull and repetitive. They're not bad-but they're not earth-shaking either. In terms of store-bought chocolate, I'd rank them about the same as Guylian. And at $48 a pound(about 25 pieces) it wasn't cheap either. Come to Edelweiss for the history, the nostalgia and the novelty. But if you're coming for the chocolate itself, I'd pass. P.S. Everything is edible EXCEPT the Raspberry Cream. It's disgustingly sweet and looks/tastes artificial. And at this price point, who needs that? read more

I read how this place still does hand dipped chocolates and free tours! Ok, I'm in. I called to ask if they do tours, "Yes, just come in and ask." No appt. needed. I was skeptical. We walk in and when it's our turn I ask. The woman says, "Oh, yes. Just walk in the back room, someone is hand dipping chocolates right now." So we walked in the back room and talked to the dipper for a while. She offered us a sample. Then a male worker comes out to chat and takes us back further to show us the "Lucy" machine. He even let my kids gold dust some chocolate Oscars! We got some more samples and eventually bought some candy. Yes, it's expensive, but you need to think about the effort that goes into it all. Cute little place, the couple working were really sweet and charming and the chocolate looked really good. After stopping in at a furniture store around the corner that was selling $500 pillows I should have known it was going to be overpriced but the candies looked so good I went against my better judgement. I ordered12 pcs of chocolate and a small bag of raspberry candy, mostly because I didn't want them to have to ring up too small a sale. Much to my unhappy surprise the total came to $32 which although I like my candy is on the verge of ridiculous. I'm not adverse to spending bundles on candy, I just expect to get bundles back. So here's the good and bad other being hijacked for cash here. The caramel marshmallow chocolate pieces were okay, I'll take See's version any day. The sponge candy however was the best I've ever had and almost worth the price. Wish I'd bought more or them and less of everything else. The box they packed the candy in was quite pretty, I guess that's where my money went. That sponge candy was divine though..... read more

These are the best chocolates I have ever eaten. I order a box a few times a year for special occasions and have them shipped to me in NYC. Expensive but worth it. I was lucky enough to work in Brussels and I ate my way around Belgium and nothing came close to Edelweiss' milk chocolate. I recommend the chocolate marshmallows.
