This is a very small salon if you do not look close enough you will miss it. It is next to Tapas Barcelona on Chicago Ave in Evanston. Marian is the main stylist and she is wonderful and extremely accommodating with appointments as well as hair washing process. She has given me two fabulous haircuts that I absolutely loved and her styling fees are very reasonable. I went in to get a haircut and found Marián pleasantly waiting for me as I called ahead to book the appointment. At first I asked to see prices as the menu says "women's haircut 50+" and I get nervous about the (+). She quoted me at 55$ for a wash, cut, and blow dry, so pretty comparable to neighboring hair salons. The wash and cut were standard and she did an okay job. The blow dry was a tad on the painful side and didn't come out that great. She blamed the frizziness on me using a flat iron even though I haven't in the last 8 months. The end result was a few inches shorter, layered haircut that was styled from the 80's. Didn't love it and probably will be on the hunt for a different place/hairdresser next time. read more

Marian was great, friendly and you can have beverages while waiting. My hair is was nice and soft after the deep conditioning and the way she cut my hair. I have a salon at home that I always go to, but I stayed in Evanston this past summer and I really needed a hair cut. I decided to go to Edessa's for a trim - I thought, what's the worst that could happen? Things started to go bad from the very beginning (looking back on it, I probably should have just left). There was construction going on around the building, so there was no warm water - she was literally washing my hair with freezing cold water. It was obviously really uncomfortable, but she was really apologetic about it and it wasn't her fault, so I figured I'd just stay. My hair was already wet, anyways. I told her I wanted a trim, and she did end up doing that and a few layers after she asked me if it was okay - but she kept trying to offer me other services. I just wanted to leave, so I didn't end accept any of her offers - which was good, because she ended up charging me extra anyways, for the layering she did. Everything was super disorganized at checkout - no one knew how much anything cost; she ended up calling someone on the phone to figure out how much it was going to be, and, when I asked for the Wildcard discount, she just gave me this blank look and then knocked two dollars off the price. My hair looked fine wet, but when it dried it actually looked really bad. I think she just isn't used to working with super straight hair, but the layers were really choppy. The top layer tended to flip slightly in, and the bottom layer (there were really clear delineations) tended to flip slightly out, which looked terrible. I went to see Paula at Edessa's, and I can't speak highly enough of her! I'm thrilled with my cut and my color. She always does an amazing job of taking a picture or idea I have and making it work for me. This weekend, I'd planned to go home right after my appointment, but my hair looked so awesome that I made plans to go out afterwards. Edessa's is a growing business of people who've worked and trained at other top salons and are now coming together in a business that is a comfortable and friendly environment. I've seen a lot of people to get haircuts (and have an aunt who is a great hairdresser, so I'm pretty picky), and truly Paula is the best I've ever seen. The environment at Edessa's is simple as they are a newer business and scaling up their staff, decor, and offerings, but I feel like a movie star with my own personal stylist who can find time at flexible hours and put together a custom plan for me. I've never gotten such good service. And even after seeing Paula a few times, I'm starting to think of her as a close friend or member of my extended family. I have had the same barber for years and about 3-4 total during my life. So obviously, I don't trust many people with my hair. But I needed a haircut and gave this place a spot. Edessa's was probably the 5th hair dresser I tried in Evanston, and I haven't been to anyone else in the area since. Marian's haircuts are great. She understands and is adept at cutting all types of hair (and I have hair that's obnoxiously difficult to cut right!). I appreciate that Marian really listens to what you are looking for, and is able to flex her style every time. She takes care to get things right, and she's also super nice. I am a guy that totally OCDs when it comes to getting my hair cut. Once I look in the mirror and determine I gotta get a cut, well I GOTTA GET A CUT! So as I usually need a haircut every 4-5 weeks, I go here where Marian does a pretty splendid job at cutting my thick, course, hair. The facility itself is spartan, but it's clean albeit a bit dark-- but hey I don't OCD over those details, just my hair. Anyway, the price is very reasonable and I can't always pay $65 at my other go-to place (read my review of Red 7) so I go here every other month to save, go figure. read more

I was in evanston for lunch, and i wanted to go get a lining. walked by this hair salon while heading to my car. I decided to give it a shot. Honestly, the best choice ever. I was first greeted by Marian. I told her its my first time here, and just wanted a lining. She was the nicest lady. She went ahead, and lined me up. the salon was very clean, and relaxing. Been getting haircuts on a regular basis by Marian for well over 6 years. Not only is she amazing with shears, but is also a professional with the clippers as well. Not to mention, the prices are amazing! Every other salon in Downtown Evanston charges an arm and a leg for a men's haircut, Marian's prices on the other hand are very reasonable. The environment is very cozy, clean, and comfortable, which fits perfectly for the location. Marian accepts appointments, which makes it very convenient since there is ample of space to park right in front of the establishment and a free parking lot (for the 1st hour) at the end of the block on Church St. I guarantee you'll fall in love with this salon, amazing people with amazing skills. read more

Came here with a groupon. Last time I had my hair cut was in December which the lady guessed on. They were very nice and friendly. It was a little rough at the shampoo bowl but I think that at most places. She gave my hair a great cut and somehow was able to straighten my curly hair with a roller brush and blow dry. Now that is an accomplishment. The groupon was a great deal and I'm glad I came. I usually hate going to salons because of the snootiness factor but this was very comfortable. This place is awful!!! I went because it had a high rating but I ended up walking out without paying because she tried to charge me for turning my hair like 4 colors. I asked for a rust red kind of orange color, natural side of red kind of color. And what I got 2 hour later and after her telling me the color was too light for my hair was some red, blonde, black, and orange. And she thought it looked good! Then she wanted to cut my hair... No way!! I told her not to even dry it, then she tried to charge me $95!!! Oh and they don't take cards either. I didn't really notice when I checked that all the reviews were so outdated. I guess it pays to pay more attention to recent ones. The first time I went to Marian, I got a superb cut but didn't like the place. Too big and empty, very dark, no plants, decent magazines, nothing to soften its effect. A year later, when my "new" stylist, elsewhere, was out with a new baby, I went back. I got another terrific cut and, this time, told her why I hadn't come back earlier. I am fairly new to the area and have had a tough time finding someone who makes a decent haircut for my kids (I am so puzzled by this!). So browsing through yelp I found this little salon with great reviews and decided to give it a try. I walked in with my 2 kids, one 7 y/o boy and a 3 y/o girl. There were 2 ladies (staff) and no other customers. I asked if they could give my children haircuts and one of the ladies immediately said yes (lets call her A). The other looked taken aback (lets call her B). A was going to take my son and B my little girl. Then a customer who had a previous appointment walked in and A had to give her a haircut, so B ended up giving both kids haircuts. When she started doing my 3 y/o she couldn't stop mentioning how dangerous the scissors were, making me nervous. Was she warning me she might just stab my girl with the very dangerous scissors?? I was right next to her for the entire haircut, holding my girl's head for peace of mind. Also, I said I wanted a BOB cut for my girl, with bangs. Pretty straight forward request, I think. Well, she gave my kid a bowl cut. Yeah, just as if she had put a cereal bowl over her head as a template. This can't be fixed until it grows out, unless I want to give my girl a pixie cut. I guess I should have just walked out right then, but my boy hair was too long already, he really needed a haircut. I thought "well, I don't think she can mess a boy's run of the mill haircut". For him, I asked her to give him a precision cut, no electric clippers, scissors only, just a classic boy short cut. Well, she cut these stick straight bangs on him, just awful. Remember Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber? She gave my son just that same haircut. I didn't bother asking for any correction because once a stylist cuts your hair wrong, well, she or he has shown their true skills, no use asking for what they can't give (and getting an even worse haircut). I was asked before leaving if I wanted to make an appointment for myself. Ehhhh, thanks, but no, thanks. I'm not coming back ever. If kids' haircuts can go this wrong, I don't want to think what would happen when attempting a woman's much more complex haircut. I'll have to give A the benefit of the doubt, maybe she has cut the hair for all the 5 star reviewers? Wish I could provide the names for the stylists, but I just can't remember them. read more

By far best haircut for the price I have ever gotten. Was in need of a mens haircut after relocating to Evanston - wanted more than just a trim/old-time barber cut - but didn't want to go pay $30+ for a "salon hairstyle" - I have gotten my hair "styled" before, paying close to $60 for a hair cut - Marian gave me the best 20$ haircut I have ever had. Marian was gentle, friendly, took far more care/attention/time that you would expect for a 20$ haircut, and did a fantastic job. Cannot recommend Marian enough. read more

I purchased a Groupon as I wanted to do something nice for my birthday. I get there and there's another customer, only one stylist, so I have to wait. When it's my turn I'm informed of the construction being done on the building and as she was about to wash my hair she finds out the water was turned off. (Good thing I didn't buy the Groupon that included highlights). She starts cutting my hair that is extremely dry. And about every few minutes the phone would ring and the stylist would just leave me and answer the phone. That's unprofessional to me. Then suddenly the water's working so she washes my hair, makes some comments about my home dye job, and is abck to cutting my hair. She blow dries it and tries to curl it with a curling hair brush and leaving it, kind of odd but I'll play along. Shows me my hair after and it looks okay, not wow factor. But she didn't use any product so my hair went flat within 10 minutes of leaving. And my groupon was for a cut, blow dry and conditioning. Um, I'm a little confused but did the regular products for every customer who gets it washed count because this experience was definitely not valued at $85 in my book.
