I never said the word "short," interpretations of the word are moot. Six months later, I still do not like my hair. Turns out, SHORT doesn't return to a happy place quickly! (Friends and family were shocked at the length, confirming I wasn't being dramatic.) Ladies, no matter the salon, if you sense your hair is being butchered, STOP the madness. Don't sit in trust like I did. YOU have to live with the results, not the person who will be paid and then move on to the next customer. Came here on a whim and really needed a cut. Stopped around noon and they were very welcoming to a walk in. The cut came out well and the woman was very sweet. They did seem to use they're own material so it's hard to determine the cleanliness of everything, but they do seem to be caring for their customers so I have no doubt that it's taken care of. Sharon is an artist! I really appreciated the time she took to understand my goals, review Pinterest pictures I'd saved and make recommendations. The results were better than my best expectations. Sharon has a really fun personality and the time together flew by. Pandemic safety aspects I valued are - the salon is really spacious and perfectly set up for a socially distant cut or color. The sinks where you get your hair washed are placed next to the chair where you receive your service, saving you from sitting too close to another guest at a row of sink bowls. I do NOT have any gray hair naturally. I asked for blonde highlights, which I have been getting for 20 years. I came home and as chemicals set it, blue-ish gray and white streaks appeared. People at work commented on how I am "letting my gray come in." Ugh Today it was even more blue in hue. But I understand everyone makes mistakes. I was glad the stylist was willing to fix it. However, when I came in this morning, I thought it was odd the stylist never once apologized or took responsibility and instead blamed my "porous hair" and the toner and said this sometimes happens. But whatever, just fix my hair and it's all good. Things got worse when after she told me she was too busy to fully dry my hair after shampooing it to remove the gray. I very calmly said I think I deserve to see it dry before I left. ** Then she called me nasty. *** What?! I had not said anything negative or insulting nor did I raise my voice. At that point, I was finally upset and got up and left. Not worth getting bad service and then being called names on top of it. I did say at that point how she never apologized and she shouldn't be calling clients nasty, and then she said she was "sorry the toner did that." Lol My "trim" is also much chunkier and shorter than the cut example photo of long layers I gave (different photo than the one included here) but that was the least of my worries. My mom came in this summer and saw a different stylist who gave her bright orange clown streaks instead of subtle auburn highlights she had asked for, so I don't think this place is the one to go for color especially. I had previously had two decent / good experiences with my stylist. It was the poor customer service that sealed the deal and will have me taking my business elsewhere. Judging by the reviews here (which I wish I had previously read!!) the owner will likely jump on now and say how long she's been doing hair and blame the client. seems to be this salon's M.O. UPDATE: After the "fix," hair still has some grayish streaks. And it is soooo brittle and damaged from the salon, so much is breaking off. The overall highlights also just have so many chunky spots and is very uneven so I have huge swaths of dark brown hair and very visible roots. Spent $240 for this. read more

I wish I was joking.... legitimately one of my greatest regrets in life is letting this old lady work on my hair. This includes almost falling to my death while hiking the Grand Canyon trails. I saw all the signs and still let it happen. I might need to join a therapy group, lol. Very disappointed in myself. Basically I noticed she was overly talkative, and seemed to be in an 'excited' state... something you don't really want in an older woman cutting your hair. But I was in a good mood and really needed a haircut and I saw good reviews on here. I told her exactly the haircut I wanted. I gave 3 simple requests, don't cut my sideburns, leave 3 inches on top, and cut the sides to a 5razor. She cut my sideburns, left 2 inches on top (which makes me look super preppy), and the sides were all 1+ inch (not even close to a 5). At the end of the haircut when I brought up the fact one side on top was noticably longer than the other (wtf?), she told me "it looks better this way". My girlfriend couldn't stop laughing when I saw her. The most traumatic part is that she talked the entire time of the haircut nonstop, and I could just feel how bad of a job she was doing if you know what I mean. If you've ever dealt with a 'frantic' old lady before, you know that when you criticize them, you're seconds away from a 'karen' aka hostile moment. They don't deal with stress well. I wish I was making this up... she left more hair on the rear side of my hair than on the top. For some reason, I was still polite about it. This job is probably the only thing keeping her from having to work retail as an older lady, so I left a really big tip because I felt bad for her. I'm not even that mad she gave me a bad haircut, as I said I gave her a big tip because I feel bad for her. I'm mad that I saw the signs and could've just turned heel and left. I literally allowed an old lady to cut the hair connected to my head. Shame on me! I'm writing this review as part of my forgiveness to myself. My instinct said she was too old to give a haircut, and I didn't trust my instincts :( read more

I went to Avenue Salon for color correction. My hair was in bad shape. I had multiple colors. I got stuck with really dark hair from box root touch up. My choice was to keep it dark. I tried to start lightening it slowly. The roots ended up red. Enough was enough. Avenue Salon was clean with shiny buffed floors. Gabby, my hair dresser was knowledgable and nice. There was another women giving her tips so they worked cooperatively. She worked painstakingly on my hair and the results were amazing and at a reasonable price. I've already scheduled my touch up. Because their location was convenient I decided to try them even though they are more of a salon for women. As others have commented the barbers/stylists do not follow the simple wishes of their client. I requested a trim only and stated I did not want a military cut. Before I knew what was happening the barber pulled out the electric clippers and started to shear me like a sheep. I protested but the damage was done, so that when I left I felt assaulted. Horrible place. Not clean. Hair was scattered all over the floor when I walked in. I should have trusted my instinct when I walked in and left. read more

I came to this salon because I wanted my hair dyed a specific Matrix color. I was nervous because the last couple times I tried to get my hair done locally it turned out disastrous and I had to have my stylist in another state fix it. At Avenue, Vanya was my stylist and she was extremely pleasant and dyed my hair the exact custom shade I requested. I expected the cut, blow dry, wash, and color to be expensive because it's Chicagoland, however I was shocked to hear it came out to about $95!!! I will definitely be back and am glad to have such a great salon in my neighborhood. Fair warning, they don't accept credit card so bring cash. This was my first visit, after reading the reviews of others. It was a very pleasant experience. It was quite an active environment. Chairs were a good distance apart. People wore masks. The hairdressers were all very pleasant and from what I saw they had some very happy customers; men, women, children. It is not a fru fru place, and I was comfortable. I had Gaby do a root touch up and cut, FABulous! She listened to me and knew how to cut my hair nicely in a bob. The only surprise was that they don't do credit cards; only cash or check. They do however have an ATM in the front entrance. The prices were fair, not inflated. I will be a regular. Parking is metered, but very close to main street L line. read more

My wife and I had an excellent experience with Gaby. My wife is Asian, and it's difficult to find someone who can cut her hair well, but she was very pleased with Gaby's cut. My hair is more straightforward. I simply showed Gaby a photo, and she did a terrific job. She paid extra attention to the thinning I requested, and she added her own touch to ensure my cut looked great, and that I would be happy. The price of cuts were very reasonable, and there is plenty of street parking available. If you drive a block in either direction of Chicago, it's free. I highly recommend Gaby and we were lucky to find her working on the day we make an appointment. Make sure you ask for her appointment schedule when booking. Heather who was my stylist the first time did a fantastic job and yesterday when I went there I told Andrea i wanted a number "3" on the back and sides and scissors on top. Look what she did to me. She gave me a number 2 almost a number 1! On the back and sides. This is ridiculous. I even gave her a $5 tip for this. Is it that difficult to understand what I asked for?!! Never going back there. This review is for the ladies looking for a haircut! I went to Avenue Hair for the first time yesterday and I'm a fan. I used to go to SuperCuts for those times when I just wanted a simple haircut (I have long wavy hair but usually just ask for a certain length with a few layers and some shape around the face) and don't want to pay upwards of $80 for a salon experience. Avenue Hair had similar prices to SuperCuts (my cut and blow dry was less than $30) but Andrea did a far nicer job. If you're looking for a no-nonsense, great value haircut, I would recommend you support this local business rather than the big chains. It's nothing flash but it has a cute old-school barber shop vibe, it's easy to get a walk-in (at least on a weekday) and they know what they're doing! PS They don't accept credit cards and were very nice about it when I had to pop out for 20 minutes to go to an ATM. read more

I had a person I loved in Wheaton, but after moving to the Oak Park/Elmwood Park end of Chicago (Galewood) I haven't found anyone that did a great job with color. When I was ready to change my cut as well as needing a GREAT colorist I went to Avenue Hair - Sharon did a phenomenal job on both. I want to start by saying the woman who did my eyebrows, Linda, was amazing. She does threading and my brows are perfect. (5 stars) My friend recommended another stylist for my haircut. The young girl who cut my hair ( I think her name was Amanda or Andrea) was very nice, but should not be cutting hair unsupervised. She totally hacked my hair up. When I left the salon I was pretty indifferent to the cut but figured I only payed $25, so I couldn't expect a $70 cut. I couldn't figure out why she gave me a 10 minute blow dry though. Then I washed and dried my hair! She messed up the cut and was trying to cover it up!!! I had one inch chunks on the left side of my head that were two inches shorter than the rest. I think she was attempting to layer?!?! There was also a hole in one section, yes a HOLE! The front was way shorter than the back and she didn't check to make sure it was symmetrical. It looked like I cut it myself, nothing was even and just looked bad (1 star and only because she was nice) I went first thing the next day to the Robert Gold salon on Central street and had it fixed. I payed $65 for the cut but it's great! It took the stylist 1.5 hours to fix my hair and some of the "layers" (chunks of hair just chopped off) were so short I just have to wait for them to grow out. I'm not too upset about the cut because it's my fault. I think when you go to a place with $25 hair cuts you know its going to be a hit or miss, also I read the reviews on here and still went. I should have known better. I will say the 4 star rating was very misleading, maybe the stylists who have been there for a long time are better. I was going to go in and talk to the owner but I didn't want to risk anyone trying to fix it. I would only go back for my eyebrows, because Linda is seriously amazing. read more

The prices can't be beat for a full service wash, cut and style and even the kids cuts are reasonable. We love Kay, and have had kids cuts with almost all of the people who work there. So I liked the environment of the front of the shop & got a decent haircut. Altogether for a haircut, a wash, eyebrow threading and a tan was $33. So great value. Now to the things I didn't enjoy...well the lady threaded my eyebrows way too thin well in my opinion way too thin for men's eyebrows so not too happy about that and also the tanning room in the back could use a good cleaning/new carpet and kept cleaner. My haircut consisted of trimming my undercut, following the pre-made lines behind my head with clippers on a number one setting. Didn't ask for designs. Didn't ask for any extra frills. When my hairdresser finished my cut, she led me to the counter to pay with a fee of five dollars. We were quickly interrupted by a worker saying that it was actually ten. When I inquired why I was getting two different prices, the response was: "It's ten dollars for a woman's haircut." "So I'm getting charged more because I am a woman?" "Yes." I've grown up knowing that the merchandise marketed towards my demographic will always carry a pink tax. Even when I'm buying a razor with the same numbers of blades as his. I know when I apply for a loan or buy a car, I will have to bring my father. Even when he taught me how to negotiate as well as he. Going into my career I know I will make 79 cents to every dollar a man makes. Even when I will have a doctorate worth as much as his. I think most hairdressers would agree that I had a relatively simple styling, some might even consider it a "partial haircut" for the reason that only 10% of my hair was altered. And even when the difficulty of the cut and time needed was as simple as perhaps his five dollar haircut, only my gender was considered as a reason for a price increase. Consider what you are telling the customers that walk through your doors. What I heard is that you felt okay about enforcing a culture of inequality and that the worth of being a woman will come at a much greater cost. To you, we aren't women that are just. To you, we are just women. If this is a reminder, so be it. If this is a new revelation, so be it. We are no lesser than anyone else. We are no greater than anyone else. We should just believe in the radical notion that women are people. read more
