The Carnavale di Venezia was an extraordinary theme that they stuck with and executed beautifully, really touching upon emotions that I didn't expect, starting from the moment I walked into that circus tent. The bright and cozy atmosphere, italian circus music playing through the speakers, concessions like popcorn and cotton candy being sold from carts, a nostalgic and warm feeling of going back in time to the simple joys of going to the circus, as well as the beginning of theatre. Here's the exact timing and schedule for Saturday's evening show (7:00pm listed showtime on tickets): - 7:00 pre-show (outside circus tent) - 7:30 start time - 8:30 intermission (7 minutes) - 9:05 end of show Some of the acts were quite unique (coming from someone that goes to a lot of circuses), including an artist performing acrobatic moves while balancing on the tip of a cello, a stilt walker captivating the audience while walking on all four limbs, a Pinocchio bit with an adorable kid playing the wooden doll come to life, a mime/musician/ juggler creating rhythmic sound effects with balls, masquerade dancing, and live animal performances with both the trainers and animals (horse, pony, dogs) wowing the crowd. My fave was the dog show, with canines doing some typical and not-so-typical stunts and tricks. It was especially fun watching the little dogs ride on the back of the pony as it galloped around the ring. A lot of actors young and old impressed throughout the show, including a 3-year-old toddler, an adorable mini version of Nino the Clown. They all did a remarkable job on stage, regardless of age, every one of them just seemed genuine even when in character. Beyond laughter and amazement, this circus really brought the feeling of family, which could be felt not just seen. I couldn't help but leave this event smiling.

They also only have lemonade for sale, so if you want water bring it yourself.

It's where you can find the "Greetings from Galveston" mural as well as a cool looking mosaic of George P. Mitchell (the "Son of Galveston"). It's a nice tribute to the Mitchell's who started up the project to create this area of celebration. It's currently the place where free movie and music events occur every summer. We were there just before Christmas time. There was a huge Christmas tree with a Santa's chair in front of it. A great photo op for family pictures. But, it was the Galveston mural that really brought us here. My husband was born on the island (B.O.I.), but moved to Tampa when he was 2 years old. It was his first time seeing Galveston since that time. The picture of him with the Galveston mural made this visit special. It will always be memorable for us.

My husband and I primarily attended Brewmasters' opening event night (Friday), which was titled…read moreNach-Yo Ordinary Tequila Tasting. As you can guess, it was an event centered around tequila and mezcal, my two favorite liquors. Each attendee was handed a tasting card featuring 12 "limes", each redeemable for 0.25 oz of tequila or mezcal. For those with a high tolerance, additional cards were available for $10 each at the front desk. Even so, most tequila vendors were very generous with their tasting portions and the one card we each had was more than enough for us. Inside the Moody Convention Center's Flower Hall, about a dozen or so vendors were spread across the room, each exhibitor ready to introduce attendees to their tequila selection: silver, reposado, anejo, mezcal, etc. Since we were interested in broadening our knowledge of tequila and mezcal, we asked each exhibitor what made their brand unique, and most were able to provide a fairly detailed answer, displaying a level of preparedness we appreciated. Some exhibitors (I'm looking at you, Se Busca Mezcal) came extra prepared and even donated gifts to attendees such as traditional mezcal cups and small cooking torches (butane not included, of course.) This event exceeded my expectations. We won our tickets through Yelp so I went there with somewhat low expectations (I've heard and read enough stories about poorly organized events occurring around Austin lately that I was prepared for the worst) but Brewmasters was legit and we would have been very pleased by our experience even if we had paid for our tickets (which I might, if they hold another one next year!) It was fun, the nacho bar was very tasty and fresh, the tequila selection was pretty good, and we got to taste some exclusive and rare samples that are purportedly not even available for sale in Texas just yet. Score! Had we not drank so much, we would have attended the rest of the event. But we had such a great time... sometimes you just know your limits. There were 3 events total: Friday night was the Nach-Yo Ordinary Tequila Tasting, Saturday was the BrewHaHa Grand Tasting and Sunday was the Brew-B-Que. All of the events were hosted in the Moody Gardens ballrooms. The Nach-Yo Ordinary Tequila Tasting was easily my favorite event of the weekend. I completed my punch card with 12 0.25 oz tequila tastings, and enjoyed a free tequila class featuring 5 additional tastings by Chamucos Tequila. Needless to say, this was just about the proper amount of tequila to make it a great night! I really enjoyed watching my wife pucker every time she tasted a new tequila. Luckily for her, there were also many vendors showcasing their tequilas in margaritas. There was also a nacho bar with all the fixings. The Saturday BrewHaHa Grand Tasting event was much much bigger than I anticipated, the space was like 10 times larger than the tequila tasting event and there were over 400 beers to sample. This was considered the main event of the weekend. Sunday's Beer-B-Que was smaller, with only a couple beer vendors and a wine vendor. I had the pulled pork BBQ plate, which was excellent. About the ships- Last year was aboard the Pearl, this year the Victory. I prefer the deck stage as well as the theater of the Victory over the Pearl. I liked the dining room of the Pearl better. I missed the bowling alley! Our steward was horrible this year. I had to dry off using one of the towel animals! But getting to decorate our cabin door was so fun. Getting on the Victory was quick and everyone at the terminal was great. Getting off the ship was easy also. Last year getting on the Pearl took a very long time. The muster drill this year took way too long. Drink prices on the Victory were very good. About Shiprocked staff- I'm honestly not sure how these guys pull this off. I have ZERO complaints about the security staff, the process (prebooking, setting up payment, addressing issues). The guys in charge answer every question asked in a timely fashion. They are also open to discussion and if there is something that cannot be changed, they explain why. Who cannot appreciate this?? The security guys are great. I made a wrong turn and instead of rudely raising his voice, because I'm sure people push the limits, I got a, "Hey darling you need to go that way." About Shiprocked artists- these guys and gals are awesome! I'm sure traveling the world gets tiresome and the logistics of performing on a ship have to be difficult. But the artists seem to have a really great time. It's great that they are interacting with all the fans. Already put our deposit down for 2018!

Another great year for Shiprocked in 2017. Each year has its own personality, but in the end, it's…read moreabout 3000 rockers just having a good time on a 4-day cruise letting their hair down! The 2017 Band lineup was strong, but took a hit when two bands could not make it (Shaman's Harvest and From Ashes to New). Both notified fans well in advance, and additional bands were added but several folks lamented the loss. These things happen in show business, nothing can be done. To me, Papa Roach was the show stealer (although Breaking Benjamin was the headliner and also very entertaining). Other bands of note: Avatar (man their fans come out), Alter Bridge (GREAT GUITAR), Dead Deads (two years in a row of rocking), and the Stowaways. The Stowaways are pieces of bands that get together for a couple of 2 hour sets and do not disappoint. Members of Unloco, Aranda, POD, Buckcherry, and many many more were there. My favorite Stowaway was Geoff Tate formerly of Queensryche (and yes, he did several of their songs including Jet City Woman and Another Rainy Night, the latter in an intimate acoustic set in the Atrium). The 2017 Deck stage on the Victory was far superior to the previous two years on the Pearl. It was more vertical/up (instead of long ways out). Everyone had a great view. I did NOT like the theater as much; the acoustics didn't seem as good in the upper level (where we had to sit as we were not VIPs). Service on the victory was outstanding, as was the bar staff. Embarkation was way easier on the Victory vs. the Pearl, however the muster drill took a VERY long time (over 30 minutes) I'm told due to passengers not following directions. The Meet and Greets are a very unique aspect of this cruise/festival. No additional charge, you get a professional photo with all the bands in the session (posted online after the cruise ends). The lines are long (1.5 hours usually), but that's just part of it. Be patient and you won't be disappointed. The bands are great in shaking fans hand and enjoying the experience. In that regard, you see the bands all over the ship, most of the time they love just hanging out and having a drink and chatting. Just don't interrupt their meals or gambling, that's their vacation time. Finally, the Shiprocked promoters do an amazing job of organizing. Everything was near flawless. The first concert was an hour or two late due to embarkation logistics, literally nothing they could do (it takes a while to get all the people, equipment, etc. on the ship AND set up for a concert within hours. No doubt this is an annual must attend and we have already prebooked for next year. I hear it will well out in days!
