This was by far the worst restaurant I've been to in a long time. Our waiter was extremely sweaty and rushed us into ordering all of our food and drinks at once. He only gave us a chance to order one drink, and when he did bring the drinks he brought over my husband's drink wrong right off the rip. Then the food came my pasta tasted like a five-year-old made it. It was two garlic. All the butter was at the bottom. The pasta itself was dry and my chicken look like someone just shredded it up and threw it on top. The chicken was wicked dry too. My husband's pot roast was OK but it didn't blow my pants off for the price that it was. To top it off our sweaty waiter, then brings over a cheesecake that I didn't even order. I said I might be interested in it and he just brings it over. I didn't want it. Two different couples left their tables and left the restaurant without even receiving food. All upset we should've left with them. Do not go to this place. It smells like cat piss. We recently celebrated a very important occasion at Edgar's Restaurant at Belhurst Castle and unfortunately left extremely underwhelmed and disappointed. Despite making our reservation months in advance, our table was not ready when we arrived. Once seated we then waited over 15 minutes before anyone greeted us, and after finally getting a waiter's attention, we felt rushed into ordering both drinks and dinner at the same time because service had already been so delayed. Throughout the evening we repeatedly had to ask for basic things, including bread, which we were told was coming but never arrived. The wait for food was extremely long, drink refills took far too long, and meals came out in stages, leaving some of our party's food getting cold while waiting for everyone else to be served. By the end of dinner, we chose to skip dessert and after-dinner drinks because we had already been there nearly an hour and a half. Our plates were never cleared before the check arrived, and while we understand an automatic gratuity was added for a large party, it was frustrating to pay such a significant tip after receiving poor service and a noticeable attitude from our waiter once he realized how unhappy we were. The property itself is beautiful, but the disappointing service, underwhelming food, and lack of concern from staff made this a very disappointing experience. After three times talking to people at the restaurant confirming my reservation for my mother's retirement party I receive a text message that says they canceled it two days before with absolutely no communication prior that this was at risk at all and are now left to scramble and find a new place to host this retirement dinner in 48 hours. They didn't even call me. I received a text canceling the reservation and still could not get through to anyone at the restaurant which has been an ongoing struggle the last few weeks to actually get any type of response from anyone (emails, phone calls, voicemails - I've tried it all) other than the hostess that answers the phone sometimes. Do not count on these people for anything important or you'll be frustrated nonstop and possibly without a venue. I had read the reviews after booking that the food was not good, but my mom was so excited to go that we were going to take a chance on it. I guess we don't have to worry about taking a chance on the food being terrible since they canceled our reservation, possibly as retaliation for me asking about if part of the group could get the prefixed menu. They claim they have no availability on a random Wednesday night to accommodate us. I've also been waiting for a response on if there's anything that my family member with food, allergies would be able to eat there and couldn't get a response to that either. Went just before 4th of July and it seems like a place for weddings. Surprised that they seem short staffed during our staff for the week. The service was decent, the castle and grounds are beautiful. Edgar's for dinner our first night. The entrees are not great, the best was the bread and cinnamon butter. The breakfast was ok with bagels, boxes of cereal, muffins and pre packaged of waffles and other breakfast items. Yes it's complimentary but for this kind of place to give plastic plates, paper cups for coffee and tea and to top it off, the worst was the package of flimsy plastic utensils with a tiny salt and pepper condiments that you get on the side of the road, please a little class! EVERYTHING. The only tasty part of the meal was the bread and butter. Service was ok, but our waiter seemed overwhelmed due to all the complaints of the poor quality of the "Delmonicos" (which was not that cut due to over 50% fat) and other entrees our group of 11 had. Food arrived both cold and NOT too the temperature requested. Several dishes were returned 3 times to either cook correctly or to warm up. After speaking to the manager/supervisor, we only paid for the appetizers (which were barely edible) and drinks (overpriced and in a smaller martini glass). Since we had a larger group, we only had options of 5 or 7 pm times. We arrived earlier and told we couldn't be seated until our time slot, even though the dining areas were vacant. I've stayed at Belhurst Castle 2 times in prior years and have been to Edgars 4 times, but lately this establishment has been in free fall decline and the management doesn't seem to be very concerned over the MANY negative reviews. There for our 24th anniversary. The setting was perfect, the castle and grounds are beautiful! The table for two with a lake view was perfect. The staff were very friendly, attentive and accommodating. Then dinner came out. My husband's prime rib was obviously old, it was gray and smelled... off. Well done, not medium rare as ordered. My pot roast was... iffy. He sent his back, I did not I didn't want to look like we were trying to pull something so I had it boxed and tossed it soon as possible. Just disappointing. The Captain did try to make it right the best he could which was appreciated, they did give us free dessert, which was delicious. I've lived in Geneva for 3.5 years and have never been to Edgar's. My Mom wanted to go for my daughters birthday. We went during the week and it was not busy. It is somehow both grand and dated. It's a restaurant that was/is fancy but not much has changed in 30 years. The staff and service were awesome. This is a fun spot for a celebration because they fix up the dessert plates really well. I took business partners to Edgar's for a food and wine paring dinner to celebrate working together and thank them for their business. An hour before our dinner they called to let us know they messed up the reservation so there was not a chef available to do the pairing. They said they would make the dinner "memorable" and help us pair wine when we ordered off the menu and all the food is "fantastic". Unfortunately, it was memorable for all the wrong reasons. We were sat by a gentleman who said he was going to take care of us and tell us stories about the castle. He took our drink order, left and never returned. 30 minutes later they sent in a server who was kind and funny but was likely the clown they sent in to entertain us and distract us from all the mistakes that had been made. The server tried to serve us a bottle of $4.99 champagne ne instead of the bottle of sparkling wine we ordered. He tried opening the bottle with the label facing away from us and we asked him to show the label before twisting off the top. He hesitated then reluctantly showed us the label. We informed him that was not what we ordered, and we wanted him to bring the wine we ordered. He left and returned with the correct wine. We placed our orders for appetizers and dinner that was to come with salad or soup, and they did not ask anyone what they wanted with their entrees. When they delivered our appetizers, we asked about the soup and salad and then they took our preferences. There were no recommendations of wines to pair with any of our orders. The appetizers included a caprese salad of oversized cardboard tomatoes, mini mozzarella medallions, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, no basil, no flavor. Water was never refilled so we asked for carafes so we could serve ourselves. Then came the entrees, nothing matched the menu descriptions. One of the customers at our party was gluten free and they were made aware of the fact, and we were careful to order accordingly. Apparently, they had not been able to make the risotto that was on the menu, labeled gluten free, and in several of the dishes we ordered. They did not inform us of the fact that they did not have this to see if we wanted to change our orders. So, they put down a big plate that had noodles in the middle of all the food right in from of her. We had them take it back to get that corrected and they must have removed the noodles and added rice. Unfortunately, this caused her to feel terrible after eating. They served some parmesan chicken that appeared to come out of a Costco freezer bag then microwaved placed on top of a bed of white rice then Prego was dumped on top of everything. All the food was lukewarm to cold. The steaks were not cooked as ordered and the scallops were overcooked and chewy. Everything was salted and peppered so that was all you could taste. This dinner took a total of 4 hours because the service was ridiculously slow. They may have been trying to make it seem like they were doing the food and wine pairing we made the reservation for originally. While the views at the castle are amazing, I would not recommend eating at any of their restaurants or planning any events at this location unless you don't enjoy the company you are with, it was such a disappointment and not what we planned at all. read more

If you are going to offer a Special to the diners, make sure you know how to prepare it. I made the mistake of ordering the Boneless Duck without specifying how I wanted it cooked. The waitress didn't ask. It came out rare to medium rare, when I really prefer medium to med-well. The top fat (called bacon) was not crisped like it should have been. Very chewy and a bit grizzly. The biggest disappointment was the sauce which was a pureed corn. I've had duck in the finest restaurants in the US, and usually they were dressed with a rendered berry/wine sauce. Sometimes a citrusy creamy sauce. But corn? The filet was about 3-4 oz so for $50 (incl tax & tip) the duck was not a good value. The salad was on a dessert plate; a very small portion. Asparagus which comes with most of the Entres was very good and tender. I had high expectations but it was not gourmet. It was rather just a good neighborhood restaurant quality type of food. Wow. I am not one to make a review but I feel the need to share a warning with anyone looking to come here. We wish we could have chosen another restaurant but came here for our 5th wedding anniversary. Please be warned that your bill will be very high and the food will be a disappointment. While the grounds are gorgeous, the interior decor is very dated. The restaurant felt as if we were still eating in the 80s or 90s and I'm sure the menu has not changed much since then. We ordered scallops served over pasta at "market price" and wrongly assumed the price would be comparable to others. My husband ordered chicken parmesan over risotto. The chicken parmesan was underwhelming yet cost us $38. The scallops were salty and the pasta was oily and disappointing. To our surprise, the scallops were a whopping $60 and didn't include any sides or salad. I'll include pictures of what we ordered but please note that the food is a 2 out of 5 but you will pay the price of a 5 out of 5 restaurant. We ordered two cups of soup, a calamari appetizer, and the 2 entrees mentioned before. Our total bill was $145! Completely disappointing. It was amateur afternoon at Edgar's Restaurant yesterday (Christmas Day). What a way to ruin a beautiful venue by an inferior dining experience. The only thing the Belhurst Castle and Winery has going for it is the location and the ambience. Other than that, take in the view and then get back in your car, save the stress, anguish and your hard-earned money..... stay home and cook yourself. Your most horrible meal at home would be the best at Edgar's. I kid you not, this was the absolute worst possible experience of food quality and wait service you can ever imagine. You could not even write a B movie script this bad. I must say for weeks we were very much looking forward to a wonderful experience only to be sorely disappointed by the wait staff's lack of professionalism, the kitchen's inept culinary skills and a sense of all out disrespect for the consumer (all of us). Constant apologies do not cut it. Our waiter (Kyle) started off great but then was missing in action for more than 30 minutes between the cold onion soup, the appetizer and never coming back to the table to check on how we liked the inedible shoe leather they served called prime rib (for a ridiculous $59!!!) . The other guests indicated their entrees were passable but do not think they wanted me to feel any more embarassed than I already did for having invited them out to this house of misfits. Waiter Kyle told us they sent him to do inventory!! Then to another restaurant??? And then to bartend--- all while waiting on the four of us??? Who would redirect this employee to do to something stupid like that?? After describing the issue to Kyle (after one my guests got up to go find him) and how bad we thought the service was and the meals, they gave us our half-filled coffee cups and dry tasteless deserts free of charge. Big deal!@#$%^&*(). This whole episode was the most deplorable demonstration of incompetence notwithstanding, how to lose business and alienate future customers! The ownership should be charged with felony neglect and abuse of customers as well as larceny for the outrageous prices they charge for less than substandard food. I have dined at the best and the worst of restaurants all over the world and yes, my expectations here for a nice relaxing Christmas Day family outing for the first time (on a holiday) were admittedly high. However, these untrained, misguided employees, the blatant lack of skill sets on full display by kitchen staff and an apparent misguided and inexperienced management of the restaurant and the hotel (if even they were present) should be ashamed of themselves. They ruined our day and actually stole my $300 (excluding the tip which I reduced to 10% and gave that just because it was Christmas). I had a similar experience at Edgar's with my significant other 2 years prior on Valentine's Day but decided to give them another chance. They certainly did not fail me that my first blistering and scathing review was an accurate depiction and not my overreaction to the same lack of common sense, respect and inferior quality of services not rendered to their customer (us). My recommendation ---the entire establishment needs to be overhauled, staff retrained and reminded (constantly) that the customers' total satisfaction is of the utmost importance to retain as well as attract new business. These type of reviews obviate that prospect. And, do not try to blame all of your ineptitude and utter failure on Trump, Covid, Ukraine or the Russians. We definitely enjoyed our meal at Edgar's! Lexi, our server, was well versed with my needing to eat gluten free and all around did a wonderful job. We had the shrimp cocktail which was delicious. We had the escargot too, it was a bit heavy on the wine part of the sauce but overall was tasty. My boyfriend and I shared the filet mignon and the duck. Both were done very nicely. I have had many good and bad experiences. This is probably one of the worst ones. We can here for lunch and had a reservation. We were asked to wait in the bar until the table was available. Notice that other families can in after us with the same number of people and reservation after ours and we're seated. I presume that that's because they decided to stand near the hostess and not go to the bar. After a long while and no one coming to get us I came out and after more time and conversation we're seated. The service at the tables was not any better. It took forever to get appetizers and even longer to get food. The food was AWEFUL. all entrees are expensive. As example we ordered scallops. It was INEDIBLE. LOOK at the picture and you will see the grains of sand and shell that look like rocks!!! Ordered pork chop medium. It came out cold and Grey and definitely WAS NOT prepared fresh but reheated (and tasted reheated and dry. Duck breast also was inedible. Not fresh reheated and not rare. See pics. We didn't eat scallops and had a bite of pork chop. We notified the waiter about the issues immediate but they basically refused to take ANYTHING OFF THE CHECK. After further discussion they took 1/2 off scallops and did not even apologize. Next day I was sick as a dog - perhaps the pork wasn't fresh after all. AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE PLAGUE. We had an excellent experience. Reservations are a must; we reserved our table a week ahead of time. We were fortunate to get a great table with a Seneca Lake view in a gorgeous wood beamed room. I saw that the restaurant consists of many separate rooms that have tables with lake views. I recommend dining early in the evening for the best chance of getting a table with the best view. Enjoyed the ahi tuna cucumber round. Not a large portion but very tasty and very fresh. Very fairly priced. Enjoyed the soft hot bread served with oil and butters. So freshly baked. My entree was a Thai vegetable curry with rice and crispy tofu. I loved the taste of the sauce. I wish there had been more vegetables and less rice and tofu. Server Lisa was excellent. read more

Upon arrival to the restaurant there is a lot to take in with such beauty and meticulous attention to detail of the architecture. The history alone was fascinating; if the walls could talk. Due to our small party we had a small table towards the back they had a wonderful view of the lake. I could see how this could have been the sitting area at one time but it did not bother us one bit. The service was quite quick, And the food was wonderful. Appetizers were delicious but the main course was well prepared and fulfilling. The outside ambiance at Belhurst Castle is beautiful and picturesque. The interior is very date, like from around the 1970's. Dark wood and dimly illuminated rooms, ready for some bankers and rich businessmen smoking cigars and drinking scotch. I don't mind paying top dollar for a quality dinner, but Edger's really underwhelmed our group. I asked the waitress if the French onion soup had gruyere cheese. She said yes with a little provolone and mozzarella. I asked if I could have just gruyere and she said yes that wouldn't be a problem, she'd make it herself. The soup arrived with just provolone and mozzarella. It would be more appropriately called "onion soup" JUST TELL THE TRUTH AND I'LL DECIDE IF I WANT TO ORDER IT. For my entre I had the chicken saltimbocca served with spinach over angel hair pasta. While the chicken culet was moist and tender it lacked any flavor, maybe they forgot to season it. The angel hair pasta was just pasta - no seasoning, no sauce. What does anyone do with a bowl pasta? For $38 I expect a really good entre'. My brother-in-law ordered the scallops ($58) served over pasta. Again, it was served with a bowl of plain cooked pasta. (Bring your own seasoning?) We had a reservation and showed up a few minutes early and we were told we had to wait. When we were seated there were TONS of empty tables everywhere. I am guessing it was a staffing shortage issue of some kind. For appetizer we had the arancini which was very good. I had the short rib for dinner, which was good, but the serving size of the meat was extremely small, especially for the price. My husband had the swordfish which tasted fishier than swordfish usually does, and it was served with the skin on. The service was ok, the place itself is very nice. I had told them when I made the reservation that it was our anniversary, and not that I was expecting anything free, but it would've been nice if they brought us a piece of cake or something complimentary as most nicer restaurants do. Do not hesitate to book this fabulous restaurant for a simple dinner or very special occasion like we did! Came from California to celebrate a Syracuse grad with our family, party of nine. We had a special table/room all to ourselves. After introducing himself, the best waiter EVER Brandon said 'I just want you to enjoy your evening, whether you're here 20 minutes or three hours, I hope you have a wonderful time!' That set the tone for the relaxing and memorable family evening ahead. Not only was he a fantastic waiter and server, but he was funny and personable and added to the overall experience. The food was so incredibly good. Between the nine of us, we had different cocktails, main courses and, of course, dessert. The elderflower gin and tonic was strong with flower but good. Espresso and lemon drop martinis delicious. Sangria tasty. Bread and butter hit the spot. Onion soup was a perfect blend of cheese, bread and soup. Filet was amazing and perfectly prepared. Prime rib was very good. Lobster melts in your mouth. Every dessert including cheesecake, carrot cake, lava and choc cake were devine! I wish I wasn't so full that I had walked around the location. It's stunning. Parking is a breeze. Come early to walk the interior and exterior grounds so you can leave when you're satisfied! We stayed at the castle in the Tower Suite for our anniversary, booked reservations for 6:00pm on the night of our anniversary at Edgar's expecting a nice relaxing night with good food and drink. We were seated promptly upon our arrival, and there were three other occupied tables with what appeared to be one waiter and one waitress. We sat there for a full 20 minutes and they never came to our table to take care of us. We decided to leave and had a wonderful meal at Ports Cafe instead. read more

While the setting by the lake and the historic building are elegant, Edgar's was a huge disappointment. We dined on a Friday evening thinking we were due for a gourmet experience. Apparently Edgar's employs cooks rather than chefs. There was nothing creative or tasty. Our Caprese salad utilized hot-house tomatoes (despite this being the peak of tomato season), no basil and was completely, utterly tasteless. Shrimp scampi over angel-hair pasta was likewise bland and the pasta fell apart when twirled. Obviously overcooked. Edgar's isn't cheap and the Belhurst Inn with which it is associated is quite upscale so they should strive to do much, much better. I will give a nod to our server who seemed to have heard a lot of complaints that eventing. But she is headed off to college next week so there's no sense singing her praises. Finally, why can't a fancy restaurant enforce a minimum dress code? We saw gym shorts and tee shirts at several tables. So much for ambiance. read more

We visited for our second anniversary, back in March 2018. I literally agonized over the decision of where to eat for our special night. I wasn't sure if we should risk eating at Edgar's because I had heard so many mixed reviews about them. We risked it and made an early dinner reservation. I'm glad we did because, at the end of a long day exploring the town and tasting wine, nothing was better than having a fancy dinner on-site before we headed to our Belhurst Castle hotel room for the night. We started out with a glass of wine and a warm crusty loaf of flavorful bread to butter at the table. The steak was the best I had ever had. (Although, to be fair, I'm not exactly a steakhouse connoisseur.) The steak was cooked to my request and I chose the citrus herb butter topper and it was just divine. The presentation was impressive too. The a la carte mashed potatoes were yummy and the asparagus were fresh, flavorful, and not overcooked. I also thought it was charming that they gave every table two chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. My boyfriend wasn't quite as blown away, but did like his side of asparagus and thought the steak was in his top 3. The cost was definitely substantial with our check approaching $100 without tip for two. However, for a romantic dinner and given the convenience factor, I was happy. It was nice to have the option to walk outside afterwards and look at the grounds of Belhurst Castle and the water. The antique decor inside was captivating also. This was a memorable and unique dining experience. The service was quick and polite...although the restaurant was quiet while we were there. One thing that I did not like much was it seemed like the wine menu was solely from the Belhurst Castle Winery (makes sense) but their wines are all quite dry, in my opinion. read more

There is very little to recommend here. The fresh bread was good as was the dessert. The service was very poor. It was particularly slow. I received my onion soup after 25 minutes and it was not hot. The server came out with the main course only a couple minutes after serving the soup and I was not nearly done. The prime rib was tough and very difficult to cut. The potato was cold. This is a pricy restaurant that is not worth the money. There are many other restaurants in Geneva where you can get a much better dining experience. Extremely dated menu, setting, and food. Seems like the kitchen and staff just don't care because the target is below mediocre. I feel completely ripped off for the food that was inedible. Service was missing for 20 minutes while we sat with empty glasses - but that's fine because the wine options were terrible. I made a reservation for my fiancé and I to celebrate our engagement. We were in the area and "the most romantic" haunted castle hotel sounded right up our alley. We came on a recommendation of tiktok and never again. When asked why we were choosing them when booking, I told them of our engagement. When we arrived to a mildly busy but mostly empty dining hall we were placed in a dark back corner. After 15 minutes of no acknowledgment I finally asked the host if I could move us to an open table with a small view of the lake. Thankfully they allowed that. About 15 more minutes later a staff member informed us that our waiter (who was actively helping the only other occupied table) was too busy to help us and that she would be our server. She brought us bread covered in cheese that my vegan fiancé could not eat. When we asked for vegan friendly bread we were given oily and burnt gluten free sandwich slices. They were completely inedible. We then discovered that the menu we were given (as well as the one online) was actually incorrect and they had a different one. So we waited. And waited. And waited over 45 minutes and nothing. I finally asked for a manager and waited again. Perhaps he needed time to wax his mustache? When he finally arrived he didn't apologize once. He went back to the kitchen and spent about 15-20 minutes doing lord knows what until he finally showed up with the most bland, soggy, saddest tofu dish I've ever seen... I've dealt with some real bs dining as a vegetarian, but this was out of this world bad. Again, with no apology and a somewhat creepy wink he then told us to save room for desert as an apology.... Now, if I told an Applebees I just got engaged they would probably give me a free desert just for that. But I expected so much more from not only such an expensive establishments, but also one that touts itself as THE romantic getaway. Bad food, horrendous service, and honestly bad wine. read more

Next... Five people, five steaks. Lots of soups and salads and calamari. Calamari was fair. Would get again. Onion soup was ok. For the price worth trying. Every steak was too bland, too fatty, some cold, some over cooked, and just missed the mark all together. Server was kooky, and desserts not bad. Considering be cool setting and beautiful views we had higher hopes. So... we went back for breakfast. Literally someone must have been like "OMG there's five people in the hotel next door let's set up a continental breakfast offering!" Mini muffins, that were stale, assorted danish, quantity three, assorted bagel halves, quantity three whole, warm orange juice, cool, very near see-through coffee. Unfortunately a less than average meal for premium prices! Such a wonderful classic venue, we were extremely disappointed with the below average meal and only average service. Made reservations for Valentines Day-looking forward to a unique experience. Seated about 20 minutes late on reservation. Not busy but clearly understaffed. From appetizers to dinner, food was bland, overcooked and presented like a cafeteria meal. Food portions extremely small, sides were cold and fish did not seem fresh as suggested by the menu. Such a beautiful place, I hope someone with creativity and capability raises the bar to the level this place deserves! read more
