Wow! What an awesome experience. Jamila is great. I was buying movie tickets down the street at the Alamo Village, when I decided to search for a good place to have a facial in that area. Jamila's salon came up first and was so close AND had it had gotten such great reviews, that I decided to wait 30 minutes to try it. First of all, the place is very warm and inviting in a natural way. Big windows provide daylight for the salon. Dark, private rooms are perfect for threading and facials. Jamila is a genius. We talked about my brows and she said she could easily give me an arch and do my brows with no wax for $12! She did that first and I couldn't believe it. She is an artist. And no redness. (I do have very light, thin hair however. not sure how it would be for the thicker hair.) After she was done I got the half-hour mini-facial. I have been dyeing my hair using henna since I was in high school, and this salon was my first experience having it professionally done. If you've never tried henna before and you're curious, please give Jamila a try - she took her time to ensure she covered all of the sections of hair, and the end result (I left the salon and kept the henna in my hair for around 8-10 hours) was very beautiful. If you're interested in learning more about henna, I would recommend going to the hennaforhair.com website or checking out YouTube videos, as there are tons which do a great job of explaining the process and the benefits to your hair. I also got my brows done for the first time in a very long time, and Jamila did an excellent job. She sold me some organic eyebrow hair growth serum which has been helpful in growing my brows out, and I'm actually looking forward to going back once a month to work on improving my brows. I contacted Jamila and she was very nice, she was able to give me an appointment right the next day. She suggested dark brown to match my current hair color. She took her time carefully applying the henna. You do have to keep it on your head for two hours, which is longer than regular coloring, but it's so worth it! You have the option to go home and rinse it on your own or wait the 2 hrs there. I chose to go home. I was very pleased with the results! I have to say it does cover gray better than regular dyes!! I went here about half a dozen times and every time the owner was more abrupt and condescending. Once, she felt the need to critique my eyebrows in a most disparaging way. (Who does that in a service position?) The last time I was in, she rushed so much she nicked the skin under both of my eyebrows so she could cram several people in after me who did not have an appointment. Plus, each of the last three times I saw her, I paid an additional amount for the exact same service. WTF? I'm done and will happily return to Kiss 'N Makeup. Ever since some guy in high school told me I reminded him of Brooke Shields--and not because of the way I looked in my Calvins--I've been self-conscious of my eyebrows. Thick and dark, they've never been shy. Despite my paranoia, however, I was too scared to even pluck them for fear they'd grow back even more monstrous than before. So, for 34 years, they remained untouched. After reading an article about how women in their 30s can't get away with unmaintained eyebrows the way women in their 20s can, however, I started looking into waxing. I then read about threading and how much better it was for your skin, and after seeing Jamila's great reviews on Yelp, I decided to suck it up and check it out. I dropped in without an appointment and got in after a short wait. And, um, ouch. I had tears literally streaming down my face during the process. I was horrified and embarrassed, but Jamila, unfazed, kept handing me tissues so I could mop myself up. That stuff hurts! Don't kid yourself. Unlike waxing, which is a sharp but quick pain, threading continues on for awhile. It was a very weird sensation, kind of like my eyebrows were being zipped. And did I mention it hurt? I do like the look of my brows, though, so I feel bad about being so negative. She did a great job, and she's super nice and friendly. I'm just not sure I can go back. We'll see how they grow back, I guess...I may be forced to maintain a very painful ritual in the name of beauty. Oh, the joy of being a woman. read more

Update- 04/09/14, the owner of Jamilas asked me to remove my review because Sahar should have her own page. I let the owner know I would not be removing my review because Sahar injured my friend in her wax and did a terrible messy job on me, I am still quite traumatized! You get what you pay for. I went to Sahar at Jamila's Spa because I bought a Groupon for a Brazilian wax for $25, knowing I have paid more than twice that amount in the past for a Brazilian this was a deal I could not pass up. I called what I thought would be a salon and was hoping to leave a message and schedule my appointment early because this Groupon deal was going to sell and I wanted to get in this week before I went on vacation. The phone number I thought was to the salon happens to be Jamila's cell phone. She was not happy I was calling her or that I had called at 7am (I am an early riser), I apologized and hung up. I called back the same number at 11am and she told me "everyone is calling me and I am getting so frustrated you need to call Sahar, her number is on the Groupon". Well excuse the heck out of me... I hung up, looked up my Groupon for an alternate number. I left a vm for Sahar and she called me back and let me know both my friend and I would be able to come today. It would be my friends first time and I knew she was super nervous but we scheduled our appointments for later in the afternoon. We were running a little late but my friend got there first and went ahead and got the "procedure" started, when I walked in I could hear her little yelps (no pun intended) from the pain. I had to LOL, but I was concerned because it shouldn't be that painful. When my friend was done, she came out and said she was going to kill me but she was still smiling, lol. We both asked Sahar how does she redeem the Groupon and she had no idea, we showed her the the coupon on our phones and she wrote down our names and asked for us to email them to her??? My friend received a phone call and Sahar and I headed back to the room so I could get started. I will say the room was clean and sanitary. I was a little surprised she used the same wax they use on my eyebrows, where you have to use a strip to remove the wax, where most places I have had this done use the wax that you can pull up (no strips), its way less painful. I try to make small talk to distract me, so I asked Sahar how the Groupon was working out for her, she begin to tell me how she is trying to build her clientele but she only gets $12 from the groupon. She was very fast but in a messy kind of way, there was wax every where and I felt like a sticky mess. Most places ask how do you want it, do you want it all gone or a landing strip? Sahar just assumed I wanted it all gone and begin to yank off everything. Also other places I have been usually have some sort of order as they take off the hair, Sahar did not and was all over the place, with the wax and the strips and it caused her to miss a lot of spots and have to go back over it with the wax. She also did not tweeze the miscellaneous hairs so the area is as clean as possible. She also continued to mention she only received $12 for the Groupon. Sahar did manage to remove most of the stickiness from the wax, but I still did not have that extra smooth feeling because some of the wax remained. This is probably what upset me the most, Sahar asks me "do you all usually tip, because your friend did not tip me and I only get $12 from the Groupon?" First of all I tried not to get offended over the "you all", but a. its none of my business that my friend did not tip, b. you don't ask a client for a tip, and c. I am sure Groupon outlined their fees in the beginning, you probably shouldn't have signed up for it if you are going to be upset by what you make off of it. I explained to Sahar that I always tip on services provided, I tip the guys at the Mr. Car Wash to my fabulous hairdresser to the guys at HEB who sometimes have to help me with my groceries. My friend is in the service industry and I know she would not intentionally not tip, when I brought it up to her she said she completely forgot because she was on the phone and would bring her tip back to her. Once I got home and took a closer look, I was not happy with the job she had done and my friend said she was in pain, I asked her to explain, are you tender or in pain? SHe said it was more pain then tender but believed it was because it was her first time and was hoping she would feel better the next day. Sahar did tell me I could call her and come back and she would honor the $25 price, I think I will pass and continue to go to European Wax Center where they always treat me with professionalism and try to be as sensitive as they can. At the end of the day I got a $25 Brazilian wax job, wont go back there ever! Jamila and Sahar both need lessons in customer service. read more

First several times I went there to see Jamila for eye brow threading, she was nice and careful. However she became such a rude person with no etiquette and terrible service. I believe the reason why is that she does not like the fact that customers don't come for the service as often as (every 2 -3 weeks) she wants. What's annoying about her is that she uses this to humiliate customers. Here are excerpt between our conversation: J: I haven't seen you for a long time. K: yeah. (During threading she doesn't care whether it is too much pain for me or not, and at the same time orders me around. I also found that she never uses the word, "please.") K: it really hurts J: it is because you did not come here often. You have too much hair K: (doesn't say anything) After she finishes her job, she did not help taking hair off my face. When I was doing it on my own in the room, she kicks me out saying that, "this is 24 dollars and you have to pay more. See you sooner next time." What the h***? I did not say anything but I wanted to tell her, "see you NEVER!" She is rude, and she doesn't deserve my business. read more

My friend and I were aimlessly driving when we decided we wanted beauty treatments at 3 p.m. on a Saturday. We were in the Burnet Road-Anderson Lane area, and I remembered passing by Jamila Salon on my way to grab a to-go order, so we decided to give it a shot. The salon is located in a new two-story limestone building, and we had some difficulty figuring out how to get upstairs. We finally figured it out (totally a dumb and dumber moment more than it was confusing signage), and we walked into this gorgeous little spa that was ultra-quiet for a Saturday. Jamila herself greeted us. I think she's used to walk-ins for her eyebrow threading, especially because two or three girls walked in after us for that exact service. We told her we were looking to get facials and pedicures or massages or something that hinted at pampering for more than 30 minutes. Jamila said she could take one of us at 4 p.m. and the other esthetician could take the other at 5 p.m. Just then, Monica (the other esthetician) walked up. She said she had a 4 p.m. massage already scheduled, so we said we'd just pass this time because we wanted our services concurrently. Monica immediately volunteered to reschedule her other appointment, but I insisted she not do that since the other person had taken the time to book a massage already and I was simply walking in off the street. Monica said she could at least try to reschedule, but I said no because I felt so bad doing that. They requested we come back on Monday, but that wouldn't work for us since my friend was returning to California that day. Monica walked away for a bit, and a minute later, she came back and said she'd rescheduled the appointment and it was no problem at all to take us at 4 p.m. instead of 5. We were sold. I chose the Oxygen Facial ($80 -- but they told us they'd give us 20% off just because), which included the usual cleansing, steam, mask and massage. The thing is, Monica was amazing. She spoke minimally, and when she asked a question, it wasn't intrusive at all. The massage, which included face, hands, shoulders, upper back, decollete and feet, was out of this world. Pressure was perfect, and I never felt like she was rushing through it. My friend said Jamila's facial was top-notch, too. Each of the ladies uses her choice of products, and apparently Jamila uses natural-based products while Monica chooses a German-based line called Biodroga. I finished first, and Jamila was out in the lobby waiting for my friend to dress when I walked out. She told me that she was giving my friend a complimentary eyebrow threading since she was from out of town. The entire experience was fantastic. I'll be back when my budget allows for some serious pampering by people who know exactly how to do it properly. read more

Jamila is one smart cookie! Anyone that hires Robyn (the hair magician!), has to be smart, cool, awesome, or all three! I've never used any of the other services at Jamila, but I have been getting my hair cut from Robyn for more than a year, and she is amazing. How, you ask? She can cut hair like nobody's business. She can color hair like nobody's business. She can make an okay-looking lass look smokin' hot! I know, 'cause she did it to me! :D Seriously. Once you go to Robyn, you'll never need another hair artist again. And her prices are reasonable. Robyn knows how to get the crazy cut you want look good with the face you have. She takes your face shape into account; she takes into account what type your hair is; she makes sure she's not giving you a cut that will look terrible once it starts growing out -- yeah, she's thinking long-term. And when she does style your hair, she'll talk you through it so you can at least attempt to reproduce her magic the next day. And she's really fun to talk to, to boot. She's cut my fiance's hair and his sister's hair, and we've all been really satisfied. She's never done us wrong. read more

I love this salon. Jamila is so wonderful with her eyebrow threading. I've been going to Jamila's since she opened about two years ago for eyebrow threading. If you've never had threading before you must try it at least once and compare it to eyebrow waxing. It looks more natural and it lasts longer than waxing. I've tried both and waxing always causes me to have skin irritation. Also as you know, if you go to a nail salon or any other places the waxing station they use is not as clean because they use the same wax over and over again on every customer. YUK!! Threading is the best way to go. This last visit, I decided to treat myself to a facial and I absolutely loved it! The ambience of the salon is so relaxing. It's like when you walk in, there's always someone there to immediately assist you but you want to PURPOSELY WAIT and sit on the patio terrace, relax and enjoy a quiet moment. On this visit I chose a deep cleasing facial and I experienced the same treatment as the previous customer stated. Jamila uses natural herbal products on your skin. Jamila really gives you an all star treatment during her facials. She allows you to relax on the table, she turns on relaxing music, dims the lights, and starts your treatment by giving you a deep steam facial cleansing. I have been getting my brows threaded here and using the eyelash serum they sell as part of my nightly routine for the past 3 months and I have received my compliments and questions from friends about what I have been doing to my lashes. I generally opt for natural and organic products when it comes to body care and this serum is excellent in that it is organic and safe AND effective! I hope people try this product before buying false lashes or paying for extensions. As for the threading I am always happy and feel better and it just changes my whole look to have such clean and long brows....they always get it right!!! I always have a great experience coming to see Jamila to have her apply henna to my hair. She usually can see me within a day or two, and she's happy for me to bring in my own favorite henna color. I just went and had my eyebrows threaded for the first time. I didn't know really what to expect, except for the reviews I read on here and what friends had mentioned about threading in general. Price was great. A little painful, not too bad though. My eyebrow area was red for a while, but nothing I didn't expect. Jamila was very nice about teaching me how to maintain on my own and how long I could go until my next threading. She showed me with a mirror places to look at and how the eyebrows should be shaped. Came from San Marcos today to see Jamila and get my brows threaded. She charges $12 which is a great price and I was a little late but she was still gracious, personable and funny, which was nice. I was glad to have the person ripping out my eyebrows hair by hair not have a grudge against me because I got lost and was a few minutes late. I had my eyebrows theaded by Jamila and I found her to be rough and not thorough. She also ripped some of my skin off during the threading process. I've been getting my eyebrows threaded for over 10 years by professionals in NYC and I've NEVER had my skin ripped off. I was also put-off by the way Jamila rushed me out of the chair after she was finished. I give Jamila 2 stars because she does have a nice personality and she was friendly and chatty with me, and that counts for something. I have been around the eye-brow grooming block more than a few times... I would say that I have had my eye brows waxed or threaded no less than 50 times. Being new to Austin, it was time to find a new eye brow specialist. I went to Jamila's Salon based on the reviews here. Jamila is nice enough, but she is always rushed. I always waited 15 - 20 minutes in the waiting area... even with an appointment! Every time I saw her, I told her that I liked my eye brows on the thick side, and she never seemed to listen. I have such sensitive skin that I just couldn't do waxing anymore-even the most artful waxing left me a red and swollen monster for the rest of the day. I have mixed feelings about Jamila Salon. Jamila has given me some amazing brow shapes over the years. But, her work isn't consistent. And, I really can't remember the last time I was actually impressed with her work. Also, I've noticed the product pushing lately, which is something I really, really hate. On the other hand, Jamila's assistant (I wish I could remember the assistant's name) is fantastic. Every. Single. Time I have seen her she has done wonderful things with my brows. And, she's extremely pleasent to talk to. Also, she never ever pushes products. Unfortunately, the assistant only works Fridays and Saturdays. And, when you call to make an appointment the call goes to Jamila's cell phone, so it's super awkward to make the appointment with her assistant. I *usually* manage to catch the assistant if I go in near closing on a Friday or Saturday. Jamila typically leaves me there while she sits and chats with the hair stylists, obviously not wanting to be bothered by me, and then pawns me off to the assistant whenever she comes out. Whatever. It's a bit annoying, but at least I can pretty much count on getting her assistant if I do it this way. read more

This is one of the best threading jobs I've had and not expensive like a lot of places. I'm so pleased with how precise Jamila was and how she worked with me to meet my needs. I appreciated that Jamila explained how she threads and how she makes sure to blend the threaded areas into the non-threaded areas. She also shows you what she's threaded, before she finishes up, so you can tell her if you like it or if she needs to take off more/shape. I also got my brows tinted, something I've never done, and I love it! I was a bit nervous at first since I'd never done it before, but Jamila made sure I was comfortable and went a bit lighter in case I didn't like it. I'll definitely do it again. I just got back from my lunchbreak threading session with Jamila... Yah, you read it right.. lunchbreak... Now, my skin is extremely sensitive, so I knew I was risking going back to the office looking like a giant freak.. But she was so gentle (a word rarely used when describing threaders) that 10 minutes later, there is zero evidence that I just got my brows done.. except for the fact that they are perfectly/naturally shaped and proportional to my face. Jamila did everything you would want your threader to do.. She was friendly, took me on time, was extremely fast -- and most importantly, continuously brushed the fallen hairs off my face! I cannot stand it when threaders just let those stray hairs sit there tickling the crap out of you while you are trying to deal with the pain of getting them ripped out in the first place. When she was done she spritzed my face with some yummy smelling rose-water that seemed to calm any irritation. All-in-all, a fabulous experience.. and at only 12 bucks (which is super cheap for Austin.. I'm used to paying 7 in Houston).. I love Jamilla! I was a WAXER and I mean a dedicated wax every two weeks waxer! I love Jamilla's threading. I have intense eye brows with thick coarse black hair and I have noticed a improvement in the amount of hair that re grows! That never ever happened when waxing. I have really fine hair that is a pain to remove with wax or tweezers. Whenever I try waxing, it takes forever to get even half of it and then the waxer usually just ends up tweezing. Whenever I tweeze, I have to use the really pointy tweezers or else I won't get anywhere with my hair. So, I usually ended up not doing my eyebrows and feeling self-conscious because they weren't done. I discovered Jamila through a friend and my eyebrows are perfectly groomed all the time now. Jamila is wonderful and she makes you feel comfortable. She's really sweet and she does her job thoroughly but quickly. I absolutely love threading. I have sensitive skin, so the first two times I did get some small bumps. I haven't had any problems since and my skin looks fine even right after threading. I definitely recommend calling ahead of time to schedule an appointment. It's not really necessary and I usually only do it about 15 or 30 minutes before I go in, but it will keep you from waiting around since sometimes Jamila is in and out of the salon. Also, there's usually not someone at the front desk if you drop in but if you call ahead Jamila will usually be waiting for you. I think her prices are pretty reasonable for Austin. She charges $12 for the eyebrows and $20 if you want both your eyebrows and lip done. I've had friends from other cities say they're kind of high, but I figure everything costs more here. read more

I have to say this salon isn't the best at customer service. There isn't a receptionist to greet you when you walk in the door. So when I came in on my first visit, I didn't see anyone so I sat down. I then listened to a conversation between a stylist and woman getting her hair shampooed for about 10 minutes, because I didn't want to feel rude for walking into the shampoo room and interrupting her service. Finally when I stood up to look around the salon, there was another woman cutting hair who completely ignored me, as her client was in the middle of conversation as well. So I sat awkwardly in the front waiting room for about 20 minutes. Then when one of the stylists finally came out to greet me, they informed me that Jamila (who does eyebrow threading) wasn't in today, and I'd have to take her card and call her to find out when I could come in. This would be fine, if it didn't say everywhere that "walk-ins are welcome." Because if I walk in and it takes me 20 minutes to find out that they can't provide me with the service that I was seeking, then they should advertise "by appointment only". I would've been happy to make an appointment, if I'd have known it was necessary. Instead, I just wasted an hour of my day. read more
