I have been playing golf for over 40 years and never knew about this course. This course is hidden. My son took me there on Father's Day and we had a great time. I hate to say anything about this course because it is the best kept secret. Get an early tee time because it gets crowded later just like other public courses. It is a short course but challenging. The starters are excellent. My son was late for our tee time but the starters handled it perfectly. I highly recommend this course. The starters told me it is not crowded on weekdays. You can get both a push and golf cart. I don't walk courses anymore. read more

Granted this course isn't the hardest, BUT it's effort for keeping it clean and well kept gets all the stars coming it's way. The employees are really nice and have that growth mindset of wanted the best for their customers. However, you may find one who takes his job too seriously and want to try to give you a hard time because he's bored, i understand. It was my first golf course that helped me when I was learning so I always go back to my roots when I want to teach somebody or when I just want a smooth round. Highly recommend! read more

Great course for beginners to learn on. I've been playing for about 6-8 weeks and was able to finish this course in about 3 hr 30 min. The holes are shorter than most other courses in the area but its really nice. Richard the timekeeper was very pleasant and I've played here twice with my female friend and I would say this course is women and beginner friendly. There are no sand traps and its nice to be in nature, you may even see a deer. If you have time and you're waiting on another team to play you might even spot some balls in the woods to recoup the ones you lost. My favorite course to play this summer as a beginner. This is a nice course for everyone. Not overly difficult. It's located in Edgebrook which is on the North Side of Chicago. It is 18 holes that meander through the forest preserve, very wooded, but wide fairways. Fairways can be a little tough but the putting greens are very good. (The maintenance crew works hard maintaining the course). 6 Par 3's 12 Par 4's 4550 yards, takes 2-3 hours to play depending on how busy they are. Good course to get a quick round in at very goods rates which includes a golf cart, even better rates if you walk. Staff is very friendly & helpful. read more

Ok, so if you're used to playing more expensive courses, you'll be disappointed when you arrive at Edgebrook but, for the money, I think this is a fun little course to play. I'm not a great golfer so, at this point, any time I get out, it's considered practice. It's nice to have a low cost option to work on your drives, irons, and putting without just going to the driving range. During the summer, I've paid as low as $22 with a cart to play 18 holes. I just recently played 18 with a cart for $10 (!!!) since it's late in the season. Where else can you play 18 holes for $10? Answer = nowhere! Sure, the course has turf mats that you can tee off from but in recent years, they've mowed a natural grass tee not far from the mat and I've been teeing off from there. Problem solved. The greens are typically in really good shape. This is also a nice little wooded oasis in the middle of the city - lots of deer walking around if you either play early or twilight golf. If you read all of the reviews, most of the complaints are true but you have to take it all into context. I feel like the Forest Preserve does a pretty nice job maintaining this course and I think it's really fun to play without breaking the bank. My only criticism - get rid of the ridiculous soccer golf greens/holes/flags and make this a dedicated golf course (for real golf). I've never seen anyone playing soccer golf here and the extra flags are just a distraction. My review has been updated after playing this course 5-6 times over the past few months. Fake grass mats for tee boxes. Course floods often. Various debris throughout the course (think fallen trees). I don't believe the course has one sand hazard. It's cheap for 18 holes but honestly you can probably do better with a little effort. read more

It's not a great course. Not that well maintained, and the blue tees being on mats is kind of a bummer. But if you're just wanting to get out and get a quick round in and don't mind moving your ball from a bald patch on most shots, it's decent. Staff is very friendly, there are some fun holes, and it is very close to the city. For $30 including cart, I'd say it's a ridiculous value and getting a round in under 3 hours is exactly what you need sometimes. So I'd say go, just keep your expectations low. I don't recommend this course if you can play 18 in 90 minutes, shoot under 100 or care about pace of play. I just got done playing here today. I finished in 5 hours, shot 83. The guys in front of us were wasted. They wore really trashy clothing, despite standard dress code. There was a lot of children on the golf course and this 'accepted' behavior sets a bad example. They let the people in front of us battle in bumper cars. The people in front of us were playing with another 4 sum infront of them. The golf course condones finishing a hole, leaving the pin on the green and proceeding to the next hole. Every hole there are matts on the ground to tee off at, despite the $30 green fees. If you're expecting to tee off on grass, it'll happen, but every hole will feel like a par 3. Something positive? The greens are well taken care of and really challenging. I shot an 83 but with 33 putts. It was nice to play on something like that. Overall, I told the management of our experience there. There was no resolution. They said there is nothing they could do about what people do on their course. I'll never go back. read more

This course still has the concrete tee boxes, but they let you tee off on the side on a patch of dirt. Not ideal since the lie is usually pretty crappy. Not very well maintained - there's more weeds, clovers and patches of dirt in the fairway than grass. Still worth it for beginners or someone who wants to get in a quick round. Brought directly to the public by Forest Preserve Golf Courses, Edgebrook Golf Course has its ups and downs, yet manages to please on the right occasion. Meandering deep through the heart of Chicago's Northern Forest Preserve District, this "neighborhood course" somehow cramps 18-holes through some pretty imaginative landscape planning that will have you shaking your head at times (see the dogleg right that starts its curvature about 60 yds from tee). Predominantly a reasonable tee shot, chip, and putt course, EGC will have you stashing the driver in your bag in fear of overshooting the greens. Definitely grab your wedges and practice up on the approach and short game while taking in the scenery. I saw 4 deer (1 momma, 3 babies) on a Thursday morning and played through in roughly 2.75 hours with the excellent cart deal. Edgebrook is a reasonable course for anyone looking to play a quick and forgiving round with teh benefit of being gorgeous and having ample wildlife to check out. The rough is very low and fairways play the roll well. I managed several pars and even a few birdies on the first round through. The greens are pretty rough and splotchy, but roll straight none-the-less. I showed up with a reservation and with no notice was told there are no golf carts even though I paid for a reservation with a cart. I'm still waiting after 25 minutes after my tee time and they tell me they are going to charge for my girlfriend to ride with me. I get that but at least have your shit together if you're going charge me for everything. Awful customer experience. read more

Well, I'm not a professional golfer. I am a professional Yelper/Bowler...so this is my opinion on this course: I liked it. The concrete tee box on each hole is kind of ghetto, not sure why that is the case. The price for 18 holes plus a cart is very inviting though. They also take good care of their fairways and a few of the holes are challenging. I was here for a bachelor party, and I had no complaints at all. The new manager Mike is doing a great job. I have played this course for years and I love the setting, affordability and moderate difficulty of many holes. All but three holes now have nicely appointed grass tee boxes and we hit in front of the astroturf mats that are resistant to tees on the those holes. In the afternoons you are likely to see a few deer and the greens are generous and well maintained. And Mike has a welcoming spirit and upbeat attitude in person or on the phone. read more

Based on just the facilities, this place is a one star. If you are a good golfer and have even the modest expectations of how a golf course should look like and be maintained, this is not the place for you. But if you are like me, and you are a beginner golfer with no real skills and want to golf as cheaply as possible without many people on the course, come to Edgebrook! Nice little hideaway to work on my god-awful hook (seriously, the ball ends up behind me... I have no idea). It's tucked away and is still in the city with decent value and not too crowded. I like that you can just walk-in... especially since I live within 300 yards of it. However, they need to work a bit on the ground maintenance, etiquette needs to be enforced a bit, and you get folks who ignore the dress code. While highly accessible and affordable, you're not going to see a lot of luxuries standard at the higher-end courses. Yes, its a bit on the "Happy Gilmore" side, but like I said, a good place to practice your swing without anyone seeing. ;) read more

I'm not an experienced golfer by any means, but I found this golf course really solid. For half the price of what general 18 hole courses will charge (and includes a cart!), you'll get a fairly doable course with just enough challenge in it to let you get a feel for the game. If you're the type to find a traditional course a bit too hard and you're still trying to be consistent with hitting fairways off the tee then I strongly recommend coming her to work out those kinks. Cons: Certainly not the most well-kept course, with the biggest challenge generally being hitting into the woods (there are pretty much no sand/water traps). Tee boxes are pretty poor for most holes (often hitting off of hardened dirt or mats that can't hold tees). Tons of cig butts. Pros: Pretty lax on golf etiquette (maybe a con for some people). They don't really enforce dress code, drinking, smoking. Pretty sure rates come with the cart even if you didn't pay for it - not sure how this works, but was really great! Great value. Tips: Bring mosquito repellent! A couple port-a-potties and not much in the way of refreshments. Make sure to use the restroom before you go and bring something to drink. read more

This course is great for amateurs looking to get some practice playing long-er holes without too much traffic. The tee boxes aren't great; they are mostly mats on concrete if you want to hit from the blues. That is probably the worst part about it (alongside many of the dirt only white tee boxes). None of this totally changes the game though, and the greens are at times challenging. The holes are pretty straight-forward, but imaginative at times, as you shoot over the Chicago river on 2 holes and on a couple dog leg shots. It was a great time, and the best part was the price! $25 with discounts online for 18-riding. If you are willing to forgo some of the nicer amenities at most courses so you can get quality practice rounds in, this is the course for you! read more

Edgebrook is my regular Thursday after-work hangout. It's not the most manicured course, or the longest, or the most challenging. BUT...it's inexpensive (~$30 to ride), convenient, and they always accommodate to our larger groups and late tee times. Their pro shop is a decent mix of last minute inexpensive items like tees and balls but they also have some nice clubs and apparel. All in all, a great place to polish up your game and not spend a fortune doing it. read more

Pretty basic short course that is one of the least crowded of the Forest Preserve courses. This hacker doesn't mind it because I'm not very good. It can get pretty waterlogged and muddy. Also the people that play the FP courses generally have no etiquette. I'm not talking about wearing collared shirts either. You can see we are all backed up, so what is up with driving into us? This place isn't the greatest but it isn't the worst either. The green fees were reasonable, $40/person with cart during the week and only $10/person for a replay. We got there around 1:00 on Friday for our scheduled tee time but we were constantly waiting around in the tee boxes waiting on the guys in front of us who were waiting on people walking...And the two behind us were starting to get impatient but hey- not our fault just relax and try to keep it fun. We saw a deer, I lost a bunch of golf balls, we played two rounds and had a blast. While the course is a bit cramped for me, it IS a good deal. Ok, let's start by confirming that this place is not Pebble Beach, it's not even Montrose Beach. I have been playing at Edgebrook for more than five years and I feel that it is the best golfing value in all of Chicago. At less than $40 for 18 holes and a riding cart and the ability to get on almost anytime you want, it ends being a hidden gem. Other courses are going to charge $60 or more for 18 plus cart plus at least 45 minutes to get to them. From Wicker Park, I have gotten there in 20 minutes and walked right on. They have a very liberal policy with refreshments which also saves some cash versus paying $5 or more per beverage at a nicer course. The course is not the most challenging, but it what it is with a variety of par fours and threes. read more

Don't golf when the lawnmower guys are cutting the grass. They are very rude and stare you down when you trying to golf. I don't want to pay for golf to have to confront rude lawn mower guys. Are you expecting to play a round at Augusta National for thirty bucks? Didn't think so. You need to know what you're getting yourself into with Edgebrook. This course is a short, simple one. There are no par 5's and most of the par 4's are pretty short (less than 300 yards). No sand traps. Not too much water to worry about. Yes, the course takes an absolute beating during heavy rainfalls. Some of the holes seem to be permanently damaged from the rain/flooding; #13 is the one hole that springs to mind. It looks like it was the setting of a Transformers battleground or something; there's more dried mud than grass in this fairway. Yeah, it's bad. I'm just getting back into golf after not playing for almost a decade. Edgebrook is great for me. It's never too busy, I can actually break 100 for a round and it doesn't cost me more than $30 to play 18 holes. I played this past weekend for $22 (walking, with the Forest Preserve discount golf card). Not bad. They also have some of the nicest, friendliest staff members I've encountered. ZERO pretentiousness, which is a refreshing change of pace from the general stuffiness of some clubhouses. Bob is a gem of a man. Such a nice guy. Oh and one other thing, they've finally added grass tees to almost every hole here. For the longest time, Edgebrook was mats-only (ugghh)...but now they have grass tees on 16 out of 18 holes. Holes get shortened by 10-20 yards, so the course is even shorter, but that wasn't a big deal for me. It's kinda nice driving the ball onto the green of a par 4 hole (not that it happens all that often for me). Some negative points for not having a chipping/putting area to warm up. It'd be nice for them to add this in someplace...maybe in that little picnic area on your walk down to the clubhouse? Edgebrook is NOT for everyone. I mean, just take a look at some of these other reviews. It is what it is. I think this course is PERFECT for beginners and/or people who only play a few times a year. If you're a competitive golfer who tends to bitch about the "play time being over 4 hours" at other courses, you're probably better off playing elsewhere. Edgebrook is a hell hole, but it's my hell hole. There are three holes on this course that are horrible. They are in low areas and get flooded constantly. The people who play here have no golf etiquette what so ever. There are no rangers keeping the peace, so you constantly having people skipping holes, playing the same hole twice and chopping up the fairways and greens. The good part about Edgebrook is that it's rarely busy and I can get a twilight round played within two and a half hours. The course is also a preservation area. There are deer everywhere when dusk arrives. The Wild life alone makes the $10 twilight rate a bargain. If you are planning a first visit to Edgebrook, don't expect much. The course is in pretty bad shape, but the proprietors have told me that there are improvements in the works for 2011. It's a bargain basement course at a bargain basement price. It's worth a shot if you are trying to get a quick round in. read more

WARNING: This is the very last place of earth you want to play golf. Unless of course you are a glutton for punishment or a total hack who plays golf in jean shorts, then this place might your version of paradise. I was lured out to Edgebrook because it was close to my office and pretty inexpensive so I figured I'd give it a shot. For starters I approached the first tee and was welcomed by an astroturf mat (a'la driving range) lying on concrete posing as the tee box. I looked around thinking this can't possibly for real, but it was. I should have taken the hint then, but it's not like I'm a pro or anything so I gave it a go. Once you get over the shock of tees that are mats you will quickly notice the fairways are muddy with hardly any grass whatsoever. I've never seen anything so bad. You are penalized for hitting the ball down the middle! I sort of felt like they should be paying me to play because my cleats were getting ruined from walking in their slop. Then as the course wrapped around deeper into the woods I was met by swarms of mosquitos and that was my breaking point. Nothing quite like playing on the worlds sh*tiest course and while simultaneously being eaten alive. I tried to man up and continue, playing dash and go golf... but it just wasn't worth it. I got through 7 holes and turned back to the club house. The one positive aspect is they were kind enough to partially reimburse me since I didn't play 18 holes as originally intended. The course is currently in horrible shape due to recent storms/flooding. They discounted a round of 12 holes with a cart to $20, but even the holes that were still open were crap. Fairways were destroyed. I'd rather they just call the course closed for the season or at least post something on the website. Unrelated to the flooding, the rest of the course was pretty sub-par. Half of the fairways were mostly just clover or alfalfa. Half of the "tee boxes" were asphalt with driving range mats. There were areas in front of or next to the asphalt, though those had been used thoroughly enough that they were just hardened dirt patches. It's one of the cheaper courses on this side of the city, but spend a few extra bucks and go somewhere else, at least this year. read more

As others have stated, the place is a dump. However, Edgebrook does offer some advantages... First, it is cheap and seldom busy. But, the main advantage is that playing Edgebrook is the ultimate ego boost for your game. Sometimes you just need to shoot a low score and forget for a second how challenging the course is. For that, Edgebrook is the place. You will shoot a significantly lower score (10 strokes or more) by playing here than you usually do. And hell, if your friends don't know that this place is a crap-hole, you can brag about shooting a 72 (Fwiw, the name "Edgebrook" does sound-like a legitimate course). By no means should Edgebrook be a regular play for a serious golfer, but it's worth a trip once a golf season. Just to forewarn newcomers, although supposedly USGA rules apply here, proper etiquette does not. Please prepare yourself for shirtless golfers, guys randomly picking up your golf ball and players hitting numerous tee-shots. read more

I love Edgebrook and could play it everyday. Because it is short, it calls for a lot of pitch and short shots which most hackers are weakest at, thus making it frustrating for them when they still can't score well. The problem with making improvements, I believe, is that the hired management company is not responsible and funding must come from Political oversight. read more

For 18 holes you can play this pretty fast. The course isn't that well maintained, but its still a pretty decent course. Some holes are more challenging than others. There is a ranger dude that drives around in his cart that checks up on you and stuff (kinda creepy). read more
