When my brother died, I expected support, compassion, or understanding. What I received instead was dismissiveness, impatience, and a complete lack of empathy. There was no effort to show kindness, no recognition of the gravity of the situation, and absolutely no respect for the emotional trauma I was enduring. We decided to have a viewing. We were given a time, we walked into the funeral home 10 minutes before our appointed time. It was deserted! We had to look for someone to help us. They kept us waiting, what seemed like forever! In the middle of one of the darkest times of my life all they managed to do was further traumatize all of us! Finally they bring my brother into the room on a sterile metal gurney, like my brother was a slab of meat, there was no attempt to cover the gurney. It was so disrespectful & hurtful, the emotions that Carmen his widow, his niece Missy, & I his sister endured wounded us even deeper. Being treated like that was a level of insensitivity I wouldn't wish on anyone. No one should have to go through such a devastating loss and be made to feel this way. Shame on those who chose cold efficiency over basic human compassion. You didn't just fail me--you dishonored my brother's memory.

The roots were deep here, you could feel it as you walked though the doors. The staff was on point, opening doors, quietly pointing you in the right direction. Soft spoken and reverent, it takes a special kind of person to work in this field. I somehow passed an invisible line, a point in my life where funerals had become more frequent and almost the norm. Something that happens as you get older. Dad sat next to me on the bench and lamented about all the widows and widowers he knows, as he joined that status too this year.

I was honored to do this for my late husband. I was able to get his wreath as well. Volunteering to place and pick up is an invaluable service to the ones who served and their families. I met a lot of great people today. You can never put a price on what they have done to keep us safe. I value all the people who came to help and who served.

On top of the $3500 niche charge, Brent would charge me $900 to allow me to witness the ashes being placed into the niche. However, the same placement would be free if I did not attend to witness the action. His reason, ostensibly, was a $900 charge to cover his valuable time unless he could perform the service just whenever he had a free minute. I notice he did spend 30 minutes showing and discussing the grounds with me and my companion at no charge. That makes the extra fee seem like a money grab. I didn't want my Aunt's remains handled by this man just whenever he found some time available. She deserves more respect than to be an afterthought. I guess $900 is the price of respect. Another issue is that all the available niche spots were in brick columbariums. I've seen many crumbling brick structures in my life. Granite or marble would be more suited for a supposedly permanent placement. The owner's response confirms what I wrote. It costs $895 to witness the placement. A money grab or something else?

Things only got worse when the invoice was sent with charges we never requested--twice--and it took multiple calls and two days to get it corrected (thank you to Julie, who was the only helpful person we dealt with). The most devastating failure happened on the day of the burial. Scott assured us he would coordinate with Evergreen Cemetery, but when we arrived, Evergreen had no record of the service. The gravesite wasn't prepared, and my father couldn't be buried. Our grieving family sat in our cars waiting for answers while Scott shrugged and claimed he had called--Evergreen confirmed he had not. After nearly an hour of scrambling to fix paperwork that should have been handled days earlier, it still would have taken another hour before the burial could begin. My elderly mother was too distraught to stay, and we had to leave my father to be buried without any family present. Scott never apologized, never took responsibility, and never followed up. We've always trusted this funeral home, which makes this experience even more painful. No family should ever have to go through what we did.
