There are labels for each section (everything from kids books to aviation to romance to politics to fantasy and more)-plus multiple clearance sections where books are $1 a piece! Whether you are an avid reader or just getting into reading, this is the place for you! Prices are insanely good, as you would expect from a spot like this. You do the work finding what you want, and you are rewarded with an amazing deal. Owner was super friendly, and rang us up himself. You can tell that this place has a lot of love poured into it; the owner was there from opening and his daughter came by from next store to tell us he was on his way to unlock the doors. They are the first Chinese newspaper based out of Portland and one of the only ones to focus on…read morelocal news. The paper itself is free and available on most of the newspaper stacks that are near the doorways of most Asian businesses in Portland. Charles Hui has done Portland a good thing, providing the Chinese community with something more than SingTao or any national Chinese newspaper. Not long ago they released an English version of the paper, which is not as thorough as the Chinese version and is targeted to Asian Americans who may not be likely to read Chinese. On a whole, content is fairly basic and the writing is not as strong as it could be. Still, who can argue with a free paper? I hope things improve and they're able to scale out their distribution to the growing community of Chinese in Portland.

As You Wish is a bit of an anomaly to me. Located on a busy stretch of Glisan next to several I-84…read moreramps, I imagine thousands of people pass this establishment daily. But who is going in? The exact demographic is puzzling to me. The shop has somewhat of a metaphysical vibe, with AA/spiritual/motivational tchotchkes thrown in. Don't get me wrong, the business owner seems friendly, the store has been around for a long time, so she probably has a devoted following. But it took me, personally, five years to give in to my curiosity to see what the place was all about. Think New Renaissance meets hospital gift shop, with a spiritual reading thrown in for good measure. There is a wide assortment of spiritual and self-help books, New Age and Celtic CDs, lots of branded coins and trinkets, bookmarks and the like. I think you should check the place out, even if it's only just once. The store has survived its current location for a number of years, and obviously continues to draw folks in.
