I feel inspired by the thousands of voices and ideas presented on the pages here, and I can't imagine a world where places like this don't exist. Monograph Bookwerks is located in a popular area of NE Alberta, brimming with fascinating retail shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Street parking can be a bit difficult on weekends and evenings, but visitors will be far more likely to find spaces if they venture down the side streets. Look for the brightly colored arrow proclaiming "Books," pointing to the ivy-covered shop on the corner. It's so important to shop small and local, and to support the business owners who pour themselves into creating enchanting establishments like this. So take a moment out of your busy life to explore this delightful corner of Portland. Hopefully you'll enjoy your visits just as much as I do.

I feel that this give me deeper insight into the business, though, and I can say with certainty that this publisher means what they say with their words and in their books. Not only are they a bunch of rad punk-loving bookworms, but they truly care about giving voices to those otherwise without them. Which, obviously, leads to some of the most interesting books/zines you can imagine!

Let's start with the charm. This adorable small bookstore with a hand painted window is just east of Belmont's most popular dining strip. They've got packed shelves, hand written labels on shelves, and the super cute merch items. Book prices are written on the first page. I couldn't possibly browse everything but it seems like they have a wide array as well as some niche items. That said, the organization is a little wild. It's by subject but I personally didn't understand how those genres were laid out and the small labels mean they're hard to find. That said, the helpful staff know their store and are happy to point you in the right direction. But then there's piles and piles of books on the floor - not very accessible. They do put out boxes of free books so they're at least trying to get more inventory moving out.

I understand that loyal regular customers are important to a small business's success. However, it's equally important to ensure that the atmosphere remains welcoming and accessible for new visitors, especially for an event. If you're interested in manga, it's definitely worth visiting. I've seen them selling works by some of my favorite classic mangaka like Leiji Matsumoto, Shigeru Mizuki, Kazuo Umezu, Junji Ito, etc. and they even have things like GARO magazine back issues lying around.
