Such a fun shop. It feels like you're treasure hunting-- my partner and I spent an afternoon looking through everything from old vacuum repair manuals, to the many editions of classic lit, to the "why-would-anyone-need-this" finds, to medical textbooks, to fashion history... truly everything. Prices are insanely good, as you would expect from a spot like this. You do the work finding what you want, and you are rewarded with an amazing deal. Owner was super friendly, and rang us up himself. You can tell that this place has a lot of love poured into it; the owner was there from opening and his daughter came by from next store to tell us he was on his way to unlock the doors. Good luck trying to figure out when they are open! I used to love this place and always found pretty cool stuff. But this is the 3rd time in a row that I've shown up to well into their "open" hours according to their Facebook (because, ya know, their google hours aren't correct of course) and they were, in fact, not open. If you can catch them while they are open, it's worth it. But wasting time driving to the store just for them to be closed has gotten old. read more

We showed up at 4:15pm and were greeted with a sign that said "back in 15 minutes." These kinds of signs are always bullshit, as there is no knowing WHEN they were hung. We simply left. A shop needs to be open during its open hours. Anything else is false advertising and really goddamn annoying. We drove across town for this and got nothing. read more

This store is filthy and totally unorganized. The store hours are haphazard. Careful walking the isles stacked with boxes and loose books, you could fall and get hurt. Plus, the owner is the rudest person I have ever met running a store and I am retirement age. I called a day early to pick up a book during covid. Said he opened at 11am. I arrived at 11:45 and they were closed. After noon the store "opened" but the shop keeper was not around for 20 more minutes. The other 5 customers were asking me questions! He finally arrived and I told him why I was there. After some rude comments from him, I gave him $20. He asked if I wanted my change and I told him of course, the book was $18. He then proceeded to cuss me out then threatened me calling me a trespasser. I replied similarly and reminded him that paying customers are not trespassers. NOT SHOP HERE! Powells is just across the river. This store deserves negative stars as it presents a clear and present danger to shoppers. If you fall and get hurt, good luck. And if you don't get hurt walking the dangerously cluttered isles, you might catch covid here. This is the worst store I have ever visited. HE WILL NOT WEAR A MASK! BEWARE!!! The gentlemen behind the counter was short in his responses and seemed generally disinterested. Store is unorganized with small pathways with books and DVDs lying about. I brought in some vintage books most from the early 1920s, about 12 of them and he offered me $5 for the lot. I know three of them are worth at least $50. I understand he needs to make a profit on items that will sit on the shelf but this was a ridiculous low ball offer. I replied back that I would at least want $5.00 for each, that should give him a good amount of profit. He replied, how about $15 for four. I responded, which four, he replied "I don't know." I said thank you but there is more value then that there and I left. He may be used to homeless or addicts that need a quick buck. Before I left I told him something my dad used to tell me. "I may have been born at night but I wasn't born last night." Longfellow Books and Powells Books are much better options they are organized and a better atmosphere than this place offers. read more

Dusty old bookstore that could satisfy the search for a fee treasures if it weren't for the nasty old coot who runs it. After asking a question, he chose violence and answered in a rude and condescending way. When I just stared at thin so I could collect myself, he literally snarked, "What fo you want from me?!" I told him that for starters he could treat me with some respect. He was indignant that he should have to and I told him he just lost my business. I wanted those books I'd picked out, too, but on principle I don't give money to mean people. He told me to get out. If you don't mind a bit of old-fashioned boomer bullshit, go for it. For the record, the guy who was fixing bikes on the other side was a gem. When I turned and asked him if his crusty counterpart was always like this, he, with no surprise on his face, indicated "off and on, yes" . Haha! read more

I can't say anything positive about this used book store because I got into an argument with whoever picked up the phone when I called to inquire whether they had a certain book in stock. It started with me asking if they had said book and them telling me it's a "Browsing" store and that I'd have to pay $15-$20 for them to find the book for me, whereas, it'd "Probably" be a dollar if I came in and found it myself. Mind you, they didn't offer to look it up in their computer system to even tell me if they had it somewhere amongst their "100,000" books. I was just supposed to come in and hope they had a copy, somewhere. Being that they also sell books online, I figured they would keep an inventory of what they had for sale listed in their computer, but when I asked this, the guy grumpily said "We don't". I wasn't even sure if he meant that they don't sell books online any more or just don't keep track of what they have in the store. When I said that I didn't have time to search for a book they may or may not have, the guy on the phone says "Oh, but I do?" He should. One would think its their business to know what they have in stock. In the end, I hung up, frustrated that our conversation was turning into an argument; fast. My end solution is to just continue ordering books through Amazon or - when I have time - to browse through Goodwill's books, which are at least broadly sorted by type (fiction, non-fiction for a start). read more

Amazing prices on VHS tapes. An absolute mess, but full of wonderful old things. Its like being in my grandmas attic, comfortingly cluttered. The owner wasn't available, so, i can't say anything about his customer service. His grandkid/young adult helped me pay, though! A gentleman that was working there was absolutely rude . I asked for help finding a book and he told me to go find it myself ( after I looked for it on my own and couldn't find ). It was my first time there . Than he had the nerve to say " go browse around for other books it's not like the only book you're reading ". Refused to help me, was snarky , sarcastic and yelled at me when I told him his customer service skills could improve after his mean behavior towards me . I'm shocked ! Great place to find some obscure, overlooked books from another time. The clutter, and the inability to find the exact book you're looking for is a turn off to some, but to me adds to the charm. A lot of people seem to hold strong opinions about the owner / operator, and are shocked he refused to make a deal on their incredible DVD collection or was stand-offish. This store gives me the feeling of being that kid that walks into the book store from the movie the Never ending story to look for a book and finds the book in the movie. This is a big book store with huge selection of books to choose from. The prices are great and they also have good condition comics. The books are organized by genre only but I found it to be okay because it sentimentalizes the visit and puts me on an enjoying search. read more

An unbelievable amount of VHS tapes. They are on shelves (some alphabetized), boxes on and under tables, along counters, on rolling carts. Then there are the stacks of tapes 15-20 high on the floor, and next to them paper grocery bags full of still more tapes. The stacks and bags appear to be recent buys, perhaps within the past month or two. I know I'm making the store owners sound like hoarders, and that would be unfair: the store is well-organized, with items mostly on shelves and up off the floor. (The shelves of young-adult fiction books, for instance, are pristine.) The VHS tapes are all in the same general area of the store. But there are a lot. Just when you think you've seen all the tapes, you go around a corner and find more. I really wonder if the owners aren't trying to set some Guinness record for "store with most VHS tapes." I can't even estimate how many are here: 50,000? These are not tattered old faded dusty tapes either; many are in crisp new sleeves and barely played. For some reason, these are almost entirely movie and TV tapes; I found almost no music (rock etc.) or special-interest (documentary/exercise) tapes. So if you've got a VCR and want to build your library at $1.25 a pop, come on down and fill up your truck. You won't even make a dent. read more

I want to be supportive of my local businesses but would give this place 0 stars if I could due to my last experience selling there. I brought in 3 full cardboard boxes of books, many of them brand new. The elderly gentleman (assume the owner) took forever to go through the stacks and actually stopped several times to read his newspaper while I waited and wandered around. I knew one of my books was a collectible item and saw the owner looking it up online. For laughs I looked it up too on my phone since I was stuck waiting around. My book was in very good condition and I saw worse used copies being offered anywhere from $25-$60 range and new / mint condition copies listed for over $100. I decided I'd probably hold onto it unless Bingo offered me some kind of reasonable price for it along with the other books. After over a half hour of waiting, I asked the owner what was up. He had separated out a large stack of books he said he'd buy for a measly $4.50, or could give me store credit for slightly more. Then I noticed that my collectible book wasn't in the stack of books he made the offer on, and ALSO wasn't in the stack of books he was going to have me take back. I told him which book I had decided not to sell and wanted back because it was worth some money. Unbelievably, when I called him on this he just sort of shrugged and reached behind the counter where he'd stashed my book out of sight. He didn't even apologize or act like it was a harmless mistake. Then he had the balls to mutter "It's not really worth anything anyways" which was a flat out lie since I'd just watched him look it up on several book vendor sites 20 minutes earlier. I took the book back and remained polite despite the fact the guy was a crook and a liar that tried to swindle me. I should also mention that after I got out of there I realized that between his stack of purchases and the stack I got back, several more books (I didn't really care about) also appeared to be missing. I will go back to this store one more time to redeem my store credit but never again after that. There's many more reputable and honest used book sellers in Portland I'd rather support. read more

Messy store with a wide selection. I called today understanding that they buy used media, I simply asked what the arrangement was and the man on the phone said (in regards to cash trades) "very little, mostly in store credit" I asked him to elaborate and he abruptly hung up on me. Wow! Great customer service! You will not see me shopping here because of that. I called again and he continued to be rude and say "Listen we do mostly trade credit but we have a sale going all day tomorrow" no apology, nothing. read more

This place is fantastic. Stuffed floor to ceiling with amazing stuff it's not the kind of place you want to go if you need a specific book (unless it's a well known classic) but a place to get lost in a sea of hidden gems. The employees are always helpful and polite, once they even let me kids pick out a book for free, and the atmosphere while always chaotic is clean and easy to get around in. My husband loves it for their old comic book selecting, I think their well organized "classic literature" section is a home schoolers dream come true. read more

When I asked him to help me finding certain magazines, he replied that I have to browse and that magazines cost only $1 so I should not expect him to organize his store and added that maybe I want everything to be delivered on a silver plate. Been going to bingos since I moved to Portland about 4 years ago. It's def an interesting way to spend an afternoon---with a giant, messy selection it's a place to browse and find some treasures --- I've found some interesting comics and fun books. They've always got new old stuff coming in for reasonable prices. I've always had positive experiences with the folks working there. read more

I don't know if this place changed management or what, but this place is terrible! It's a huge location that advertises buy, sell, trade, which I'm always into! With Powell being so selective I thought this would be my new place. AND they have records! I walked in to trade in or a sell a record of mine, Fleetwood Macs, FleetWood Mac. As soon as I walked in the owner? Was just staring down reading a book and didn't even bother to greet me as I walked up to the counter. When I presented him with my LP he asked rudely if I came in with that or got it here? I had literally walked straight to the counter upon entering and was now being accused of stealing? Aside from being called a their he then offered me 50 cents buy back, no trade, that's its 50 cents. Yea I'm going to pass, and also never come back. No idea how this place stays open read more

I generally try not to write reviews based on service, but this one really was not my favorite. So, the owner is a grumpy old man who stares at you the whole time, which imo, is standard for an independent book store. Nothing too unusual there. What did start to annoy me was that said dude cannot do math. Not only did he miscalculate (twice), he did so confidently and does not want to hear how to actually take 25% off. Also, this shop is on Groupon, and when I showed him my voucher he just said he doesn't know what that is and refused to take it. He also asked me to step out of line while I played with my phone, which I was happy to do (even though it did not solve said Groupon problem), but there was no line. I just moved to the empty space adjacent to the other empty space where I had previously been standing and tried to look apologetic. It's sad, because this store does have a rather impressive collection of used books, and I'm sure it would be a fun hunt for collectors. read more

One of my favorite used bookstores. The staff is very friendly, and the selection is huge. I have visited many times and always find a treasure. What it lacks in organization, is easily overlooked by the chance of finding a gem. Also, on the lines of customer satisfaction, after buying a CD that had problems and a book I already owned, they took both back without a hassle. Thanks to the store, I have a more complete collection of book's in my home. With a total of 50 books found so far (including Cd's and books for school) The prices are also really affordable I think If you love a good hunt and a good book, this is a great place. read more

I LOVE BINGO! I know Powell's just got rated best bookstore in the world(!) but BINGO, man. Bingo is pretty great. Let's discuss. They are a pretty large (and somewhat disorganized) shop so it's a treasure hunter's dream but not really a good idea if you're looking for a specific title. Within broad headings (TRAVEL, PSYCHOLOGY) there were many titles but if there was a system, it seemed flimsy. They have textbooks, comics, VHS, DVD, magazines and all sorts of books (fiction, non fic). They have a clearance wall that is $1 AND b3g1free. If you like them on FB and check in, there's a 10% discount. Basically, I would put this up there with the best of Portland's literary options, especially if you just want "a book" to read and not a specific book (I go through phases). There's a small parking lot with 4-6 spots and they have weird hours (open at 12, never earlier). They take cards (with a 25 cent charge if it's under $5). The sales associate was very chill, it wasn't a place where the workers follow you around. There were sales going on and I got a stack of stuff for under $3. Can't hate. Bingo. read more

What a miserable person that runs this place. He is inconsiderate and rude. Made I heard him tell the young lady also working that "he gets upset when someone comes in looking for just one book" and actually said to me "Don't know how to browse, huh". I would have been more than happy to browse had he even acted like he wanted me to find what I was looking for. I even had another title in my hands that I was going to add to my purchase. Ugh, the guy behind the counter! FIRE HIM BINGO. FIRE HIM TODAY. The first time we came in, we dealt with - I *think* - the owner; he was crotchety but warmed up to us, chatted a bit, offered a free book to one of our kiddos, and it was a pleasantly oddball experience excavating through the musty piles. The second time - a week ago - different guy behind the counter, and yes the previous one-star reviews are on the money. This guy is TOXIC. I have no idea what the relationships are here or what's going on, but a personality like this will kill a business, so if Bingo wants to survive, they will find a way to dislodge this d-bag. Sure, the "Soup Nazi" concept is cute if your establishment is world-class, but that is NOT the case here. read more

Stopped in on a whim. Found books I didn't even know I needed. For far less than other book stores, but more than yard sales. Many books are unsorted, which I like- it gives me a chance to find books I wasn't looking for, but could enjoy just as much. Many books were sorted into loosely organized sections, which allowed me to find what I was directly looking for, with little nuggets of unexpected info occasionally tossed in. If you are looking for a library with price tags, do not enter. If, on the other hand, you are a full on bibliophile, try Bingo- you won't be disappointed. read more

I would like to love this place but I just don't. It was cramped, cluttered, and dusty. Now, I love me a great used bookstore and I love the overflow of books but this just wasn't great. It felt like someone had been hoarding for years, and then decided to turn it into a bookstore. We came at an unfortunate time when the owner/operator was getting into an argument with a customer. It was really awkward so we cut our time short and left. I would like to support local businesses but there are better used bookstores around the Portland area. read more

Great place for buying cheap books, if you can find anything in the rat's nest that is this store, terrible place for selling. I was offered $7 total for well over 200 books, with $2 of that just for a set of 'learn Spanish' cassette tapes. The owner was very rude when I said that it would be nice to see more information about buy/trade prices on the website or to have been warned when I called earlier in the day and explained what I'd be selling. He said they do 10 - 15 buys a day and that I was the first disappointed person he'd had. I ended up selling a fraction of the books I had brought, still for $6, after demanding that I at least receive 5¢ per book and he sorted out the ones he would take. Terrible attitude and environment for customers. This shop has lost my patronage and I don't recommend you even bother with it. read more

My husband and I bought a ton of books here today! A lot of these were marked down and because we bought so many they took an additional $15 off. I got a book of love poems by ovid, a book on faberge art, a book on Tiffany & Co windows, a book on gardening in the Pacific Northwest and Native American art of the Pacific Northwest. They have a lot of older books, and even though they are in the right sections not everything is in order. They have cd, dvds, vhs, records, paperbacks and tons of books. read more

A big plus-minus for me; the size of the place and the quantity of offerings ensure that there are gems to be found here. We're not talking just books: CDs and especially VHS are in astounding supply at Bingo. Aside from the general subject categorizations, however, none of it is remotely organized. If you're like me, and prefer at least the author alphabetization to be ready for you as you're browsing you are completely out of luck. If you're up for just randomly browsing stacks and seeing what treasures you discover, you could spend weeks here on end. But if you're hellbent on a specific obscure title or author, you'd best be prepared to roll up your sleeves and start digging...and walk in with plenty of patience! read more

Great selection for a used book store, amazing prices, and friendly staff. I found this place by accident and ended leaving with a box full of books for only $30. The same haul would have cost me closer to $100 at Powell's. I will definitely be coming back. read more

For years, I have driven by this bookstore and made no attempts to go check it out. I went with a friend and it was amazing! It's larger than it looks from the outside. If you are looking for new fiction, this might not be the place for you because they don't have a lot available and there's a chance they might but popular books go fast.
