I had the opportunity to visit the HJ boutique in March with a friend, where Dylan and another man whose name I unfortunately can't recall. It had been a long day out and about in Beverly Hills, but the boutique visit was relaxing and fun with zero pressure to buy. I sniffed dozens of Henry Jacques' scents, including their incredible crystal spinning tops that are otherworldly in their profiles. Scents I particularly enjoyed - Cascador, La Nuit, No. 11 De Sacha, among others - still linger in my mind, along with two words: "one day." The products at Henry Jacques are certainly an investment. It takes a confident person to wear their stuff - and that's certainly something I aspire to.

While HJ only offers 30 something scents to the public, there are many more exclusives. It's quite the rabbit hole. These are absolutely no expense spared creations not for the initiated. If you have never smelled pure damask rose, you probably won't realize the extraordinary cost that goes into these bottles. Pure rose oil crystalizes, and as such, many of the HJ oils crystalize because they're putting 100's of dollars of pure rose in them. HJ uses real oud in their oud perfumes. These aren't your designer perfumes or 'niche' houses where 3-5 dollars of ingredients go into your 300 dollar bottle. Very few brands can field this quality level of raw materials. The service is spectacular and not at all pretentious. It's very relaxing and therapeutic to spend time in the boutique. The prices are high, yes. But as someone who has smelled 1000s upon 1000s of fragrances, you won't find this level of quality elsewhere. These are 3 dimensional scents.

He guided me to the Joséphine candle, offered to beautifully wrap it, and promptly sent an invoice so I could pick it up before closing. I arrived before closing and not only was everything perfectly prepared, but Noah remembered my name immediately. That level of attention is rare and genuinely appreciated. Since I had a few minutes before the store closed, I browsed the shop, which is impeccably organized and a pleasure to be in. I asked about the wax cameo melts and mentioned I wasn't sure if I had seen all the available sets. Noah made a great recommendation and even offered me a sample, which was such a thoughtful touch. I also appreciated the convenience of being able to write a birthday message on a Trudon card right there in the store. My friend absolutely loved the gift and couldn't wait to try it. Diptyque, Comme des Garçons, Jo…read moreMalone, La Note Parisienne, Prada, Byredo, Annick Goutal, Penhaligon's, Etro, Malin + Goetz ― I had more than enough companies offering me high-fallutin' ways that I could literally burn my money (and those are just the ones I took up on the offer). But I fell for the gateway drug of Carrière Frères, the "junior" brand that is, in fact, the company that owns the fancier Trudon. When I found out there was a Trudon boutique in L.A., I was a goner. You can find the official Cire Trudon history on their website: They became chandlers to the church and monarchy in seventeenth century France, and their wares lit up cathedrals and châteaux. Reading between the lines, it seems the company disappeared sometime in the nineteenth century, after being bought by the Carrière Frères company, only to be resurrected as a brand of high-end luxury scented candles just recently. So Trudon's heritage is both old and, truth told, pretty new. Regarding scented candles, Carrière Frères has a longer history, and their aesthetic is firmly rooted in botanical fragrances: Each scent is modeled closely to a single flower, herb, wood, etc. Their Tomato fragrance, which smells mostly of tomato leaves, is a green and refreshing scent popular for absorbing kitchen odors. Trudon's main line of candles range from the damp (Balmoral ― the smell of a foggy Scottish moor) to the exotic (Ottoman ― a spice market in the souk) to the suggestively louche (Odalisque ―orange blossom toilet water in a bordello). Even when they weren't exactly my taste, there was no denying their quality. Their price, that was something else, though the gram-per-gram price difference with Diptyque is just pennies in the end. The store itself is rather spare; compared to the beautiful new renovation at Diptyque's Larchmont boutique, I would hope to see more than the large expanse of largely bare white walls. Design-wise, this is not the flagship store the brand deserves. Service was excellent ― the sales associate (Adam, I believe) was engaged, friendly, and very passionate about the brand. I honestly did not expect to spend $125 on a candle I did not need, but I did. (That, and $65 on a Carrière Frères candle, too.) I had seen Trudon candles in many high-end boutiques around town and really didn't think much of them, but the Trudon boutique turned me around on the brand. Given that I now have another expensive candle brand to burn my money, I'm not sure how I feel about that...

Last year, we purchased some samples and a roll-on from other retailers and were happy with the buys. I bought another sample pack and George was super helpful and knowledgable with my scent discovery pursuit. I really wanted to like more but was only able to come up with 3 scents I was curious about and doubled up on Radio Bombay. The perception of their catalog seems large and I wish that I loved more scents than that. Again, this was not our first time revisiting their offerings. We arrived around dinner time on a weekday so parking was ample. There are other stores in this plaza too that we loved such as Akila, Viba and New Balance. They give you a $40 dollar credit if you purchase a set of samples but what I found misleading was, the bag that it came with said I could only use it at their SIlverlake location for a limited amount of time. Not true - they send you an online promo code to use towards a full sized bottle with no expiration date. I've been emailing a few of their employees and they all seem to be very nice. Their scent names are edgy and some of the scents really blast you back in time which is what drew me in, visual presentation is top-notch and George was so sweet! Also, just want to mention, we made a purchase on a big bottle from another retailer recently and the formula was not as concentrated and much lighter than their samples. I would purchase from DS & Durga directly next time.
