Went here today for catch up with friends and food- I ordered the potato skins / my other companions ordered the turkey dinner poutine and a falafel wrap with fries - I liked my skins and I was full half way so was able to take home and my son ate and like the rest - only little thing was the cheese sticking to the paper served on - The poutine was reviewed at not as much gravy or turkey as they would like / the falafel not having the type of spice likened as much- fries good- as homemade and good size- Will return though and nice waitstaff/ good events - today was jazz afternoon- loud but that's a good thing to draw a crowd in which it did! I had the turkey club. I use to love there club. I think it use to be called the big boy club. It use to have turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo. Becky was our server and she was the sweetest lady, took the time to share some town history with us. She is a gem and the food was delicious. Please dont judge my selection lol. I tried the liver and onions here and it was amazing. I was feeling a little sluggish lately and my Newfoundland grandmother's voice was stuck in my head " have a feed of liver and it will perk you right up". I decided to order the liver and onions and loved every mouthful, this may not be for everyone. The gravy was delicious and the liver just melted I buour mouth. Meh. Poor to average, at best. Service is garbage. Waited over 10 minutes for first beer. Keith's draught didn't have any bubbles in it. Not acceptable today. The brewery is right next door. Figure it out. Food was OK. The patio is a nice space. Having said that, the staff seem uninterested and the draught was not on point. Won't be going back and I urge other consumers to do the same. Don't settle for premium prices paired with a non-premium experience. Halifax consumers really need to stop supporting restaurants where the price doesn't reflect the experience. (Go to one of the Bertossi group restaurants and you'll have a similar bill however treated like gold) read more

I had a great time here. I was seated quickly, served friendly and prompt by the staff. Me and my girlfriend had lunch here. She had the calamari and I had some of the elvis poutine and we shared some mozza sticks. Everything came quickly and cooked well. We were offered refills whenever the waitress walked by. This is my go-to place for karaoke, or should I say, my go-to place to listen to my friends and strangers belt out some sweet karaoke. I dunno, it's just not for me. I'm too shy for it. Anyways, this place is huge, so you can always grab a table or a booth, no waiting. I'm pretty sure there's no cover here and guess what? You like to gamble? You're in luck! Tons of VLT machines. On any given night you will find this place packed with old local north end regulars and a few groups of hipsters sprinkled in. Standard for any north end dive bar. Drinks are cheap. So when you've had one too many and are experiencing that amazing day after hang over... they have a big greasy breakfast you can shamefully make your way back for the next day! Tip: the often have Groupons, so maybe check that out before ordering a meal. read more

Came here for brunch - when I pulled up I think there was literally one or two other cars - that's never a good sign. Walked in, and yup, one table had customers. Ugh, I started to feel even worse. Noticed a ribeye brunch special on my way in for $12. On the brunch menu it was listed as $14 (5 oz) - sweet. We were quickly greeted by a cheery server who I feel like was a bit delighted to have some patrons. Brother ordered the flapjacks and I got the ribeye special. As gloomy as things started out when the food came out - it was actually surprisingly good. Nothing tasted like it was sitting underneath a red lamp or anything. I'm still thinking about the steak now - don't get me wrong, it's not like it was the greatest thing ever. But for $12 you get two eggs, steak, toast and a good portion of seasoned hash browns. I've gone to other places to pay more and get less (quantity and quality). So good job Lion's Head! Keep it up! read more

First time here (on a holiday) so it was quiet and could actually hear myself talking to the people I was with - they mentioned how it is normally very noisy and crowded because it's so popular! For pub food, I was really impressed by the veggie options. I'm not a major salad fan when I can have something different, and the teriyaki stir fry definitely hit the spot (although I took some bites of the Greek salad and that was amazing too). Lions Head Tavern has great wings. It is your typical tavern, although I know it has Karaoke night. It is quite entertaining. I have witness some rising starts. I'd really give this place a 2.5. My first ever visit was last night because my partner and I had planned on trying Mother's Pizza, but they were full and we didn't feel like waiting around. I know people that go to the Lion's Head regularly and envisioned it pretty much exactly what it turned out to be. A semi-large basic bar, broken into three sections ('bar' side on the right when you come in with dart boards, couple of TVs, maybe a dozen tables), then the dining area to your left, divided in half by a partial wall. Although there are several windows, it's overall low lighting but not warm lighting. Maybe 30 standard wooden tables & booths, various country flags hanging from the ceiling, typical wall decor, a kareoke stage in the far corner (which was full of boxes). My potato skins were fine (not overcooked as I have experienced lately), and definitely filling, served with sour cream as per normal. I don't see an actual menu online anywhere to double check the price. My partner had the fish & chips and said they were fine as well. Frozen fries, two filets, nothing memorable in a good or bad way. Service was quite friendly and our server made sure to get us another round of beers before the first was empty. I'd go back here if someone asked me to, but never choose it on my own. Mainly it's because they don't have much for vegetarian options (which I am), and there's nothing in the atmosphere to draw me (which sometimes restaurants will do, regardless of their menus). Lions Head - located on Robie Street the Lions Head has been a hot stop for the North endears for many years. Summer time the deck is hopping from lunch to close especially when it is nice out, it would be interesting to know how many pictures of draft they go through There are many summer nights that when you go there the baseball teams are celebrating a victory or even sometimes a loss but by the end of the night they really don't care. A large seating area houses both tables and booths and reservations are as well a good thing, especially on a Friday if you are going with a large crowd. Often when you walk in there is someone that you know either sitting at the bar or playing a game of pool. Friday nights are always packed at the Lions head as it is Karaoke night. I am sometimes found there doing what I feel is singing up a storm. Not only is the food great the service is always good and with a friendly hello. Normally when I go I like to get either hot wings as I am a spice freak or if I am doing a supper meal something like the hot turkey with fries for $8.95. Oh and the potato skins are some of the best I have tasted around town. As well each day there are specials posted outside on the sign. So come on bye and sing a song some Friday night maybe we can do a duet. read more

When we first arrived we were seated at a table but the server kept pulling her mask down to talk to me so we moved to the bar. The bartenders had great personality and were very attentive but the food was meh - this was the first time my friend and I had visited the new location. My friend's order was late coming out - she suspects they forget her order altogether as it was so hot when it finally arrived - and mine sat to get cold while I waited to start eating until hers was delivered. The food was okay, I ordered the French Onion Dip burger which was pretty dry and very bland other than the fact that there was French Onion Soup to dip it in. More soup would have been needed to finish the burger but I did order gravy with my fries which helped. My friend ordered the falafel but found it very dry as well. The new Lions Head is beautiful, all of the beer is cold, and I was really happy to see vegetarian options included on the menu. But the decor lacks character, and the new menu items miss the mark both on value and taste. It's been a few months, and either my friends and I have had most of the food offerings, and it's all just not enough of what it should be. If it's meant to be flavourful, it's not. Spicy? It isn't. Toasted? Nope. The nachos have been changed since opening for the better, I assume due to customer feedback, and I hope the owners are looking at the rest of the menu. I'd take the old Lions Head sourdough grilled cheese over the pulled jackfruit any day. read more

I am sitting at the Lions Head now. Just steps from the historic Olands Brewery and Halifax's Hydrostone Market, the Lions Head is a local legend and for good reason. Half pub, half restaurant, with a great patio in the summer. If you are reading this review this is probably the kind of place you are looking for and it won't disappoint. Lots of options, good prices and great staff. My personal recommendation is the Diablo Burger. Great taste and just enough heat that you have to eat it sort of slow, so slobs like me are forced to eat at a normal pace. I really can't believe that I haven't done a post on the Lion's Head. There are a few things that keep me coming back and make this spot a go-to if you live in the North End of Halifax. The North End is full of new spots with great atmosphere and craft brew. The Lion's Head really takes you back to another time of the neighborhood. It really is a simple spot with: 1. Good Bar food 2. Karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights - filling up the spot and giving you an excuse to stay past 10 pm 3. Cheap beer 4. Great staff - I once left an over-shirt at my seat, thinking I lost it and came back 4 months later with it waiting for me. The server brought my regular drink to the table with a plastic bag containing my shirt. This is a great neighborhood bar that gives you everything you need for a night in the North End... read more

So I have a confession to make, I can't carry a tune to save my life, but even still I'm a closet karaoke fan. I had never been until Jill M. and a group of friends introduced me on the final night of Yelp Retox 2012. I've since become a big fan. I've never had the food, but their drink staff is fast and friendly. It's a large place, and after a few drinks I still manage to end up outside instead of in the washroom from time to time. The karaoke is where it's at. Laurie is great, there is a big song book with too many options. Its got a supportive crowd that depending on the night and the song, will get up and dance. There are lots of props to choose from if you are putting on a performance, and there are always a couple of fun regulars around. Lion's Head Tavern is a great dance club alternative for a night out in Halifax. read more

Everyone needs a local pub. One that's within walking distance from home just in case you have *hiccup* one too many. Luckily for me that local pub happens to be the Lion's Head. Beer = Good. Food = Good and pub like Atmosphere = Excellent Service = Friendly Word on the street is the Karaoke is off the hook but it starts late and I'm an early to bed, early to rise kind of gal. Bingo on Wednesdays at 6 sees the same group of people hanging out together (they can be kind of rowdy so if you want a quiet booth just be aware that 6p on a Wednesday may not be ideal). My favorite part about the LH is the reader board outside that most times reads: Tuesday is Wing Night but if you're lucky you'll see it when it says "Tuesdiy is Wang Night"! read more

Pros 1.) Food is better, than before... I order the Big Ben every time, its slow cooked beef that falls apart on top a grilled cheeses on French bread, smothered in a beautiful gravy. With a ton of hand cut fries on the side & coleslaw, around $10.00. 2.) Its always going to be the Lions Head, the atmosphere is special there, always was, no matter who owns it. Cons 1.) The old staff is gone, so they lost a bit of the hospitality there. 2.) They changed the wings, but my son will still order them. The last time i went to the lions head was in 2009. I ordered motza sticks and a beer while having lunch with a group of friends. Everyone's food came, my sticks were nowhere to be seen. After alerting the server and waiting some time my sticks arrived. However when I took a bite, the cheese was still frozen. Sending the sticks back, the next batch they brought me were the same batch with my bite still in the previously frozen stick, and by this time, the rest of the table was done with lunch. No comp, no discount, nothing. Have not been back since. read more

So... where are good dive bars and crappy dive bars. This one is the latter. We went there on a Sunday night for a going away part for a friend... a popular friend because there was over 20 of us. Kitchen closed at 8pm sharp. 1/2 our crowd went out to grab eats elsewhere 8:04pm, you'd think they would stay open another 1/2 hour to feed 20 hungries, not to mention the extra drinks they would have sold. I understand having closing times, but flexibility is the key to good business. Also, we had to request they put on music. They put in an AC/DC cd. Meh. You're sure to find a seat at the Lion's Head. This place is a good option for big groups of people if you want to come, hang out, play darts, watch some sports or just chat, and be sure of the flow of drinks and food. There's a good selection on tap and the service is decent with waitstaff taking pretty good care to make sure you have another pint in your hand when you're ready for it. I'm pretty impressed by the food here as well - they've rejigged the menu to offer high quality pub grub and more. There are vegetarian options and a nice variety of sandwiches, poutine, and snacky foods. A good neighbourhood option - nothing fancy, but a solid place to get a drink and some food and a pub atmosphere. read more

With plenty of room and even more interesting characters, the Lion's Head delivers. I sort of remember arriving here and barely remember leaving which is pretty indicative of a fantastic dive bar visit. Karaoke seems to be the main draw for my circle of friends and I was finally able to partake last weekend. Not knowing exactly what to expect, my mind was blown when we were treated to so many back-to-back Starsearch moments that I was up out of my seat playing Paula Abdul to these 'beautiful souls with the voices of angels' - perhaps a direct quote from the many heart-to-hearts I tried to force on these karaoke pros. This wasn't a 'bachelorette party singing Baby Got Back' kind of evening. While I most certainly should have considering my state the following morning, I didn't have any of the food although it looks like standard deep-fried bar far in the best of ways. Instead, I stuck to beer and was happy to see Stella on tap. Now, I can't be certain (again, I barely remember leaving), but I'm pretty sure it was a pricier than most spots at something like $8.50 per. For Karaoke, I would give the Lion's Head five stars with an extra standing ovation. For everything else, I imagine a three-star rating will set more realistic expectations. read more

Worst service ever. I recently had one of the worst dining experiences here. First, the waitress was l being very short and rude with us. No smile or friendliness. No you're welcomes. I thought she must be having a really bad night, or she's doesn't give a shit. We both felt like she wanted to start a fight, like she was angry we decided to sit down. Anyway, I order a wing special and they were okay. But I couldn't eat them all. She asks if I'm done and I say yes, but could I get them to go, she says sure and picks them up but doesn't back with them when we go to pay. I ask where are my wings, and she says oh they're gone, you said they were done with them. You're not allowed to take home wings here. WTF. She forgot to mention that part when I said I wanted to take them home. I ask if I can have them back and she nope. Goodbye 10 extra wings. Worst service ever. read more

This neighbourhood gem is entirely welcoming to those who find themselves paint-speckled of an Easter Sunday, as well as, as I've heard, those who're wearing sparkly shoes and ready to sing late in the post-meridian. The food is entirely solid, from a respectable Eggs Benny (the eggs just past runny, but not as pale and flaky yolked as many a restauant brekkie) to a delish hot turkey sarnie at the lunch hour. The beer is cold and sweet, with a decent variety on tap. Just skip the coffee unless you have a taste for cigarette ash. read more

The Lion's Head was a last minute twist to my night that left lasting impressions. I was ready to settle in for the evening when a super fun text message steered me otherwise. A few out of towners and some good old fashioned kareoke- how could i resist? And with a brief bout of primping, I was out the door and on my way. The LH is a pretty spacious spot with full bodied seating arrangements, a corner stage and divided rooms for sipping. Heavily wooded and adorned with trophy type decor, its as if we've come to a small town's most commonly frequented retreat. The crowd was sparse, and few and far between. A quad of younger gals had their songs picked and names listed far before we even arrived. Older folks who come and live the dream seem to be the core audience, and I'm not complaining. The actual list of song options was very impressive. From The Animals to Bowie to early 90's R&B babe, Aaliyah... there are both opportunities to partake in nostalgia or the present. I did not get up to the stage, but enjoyed a few friends give riveting performances. The crowd seems supportive and enthusiastic, and I'll have to get a song prepared for next time. Friendly staff and a cosy, small town feel. Lion's Head is nice change from the regular. read more

Here is a 2015 Review (this place has been improving every year so don't look at old reviews): Beer is pricier than most local establishments but they do have a good beer selection. Food is great. Have tried a lot on the menu and enjoyed them all. My favorite is Shepherd's Pie and the poutines. Ole's favorite: Big Ben. He just tried Hot Turkey sandwich and gave it 2 thumbs up!! And burgers are good too. Don't get sweet potato fries unless you like sweet potatoes with cinnamon and sugar on them. I just saw tonight they offer a dessert with those - SPF with caramel sauce. From what I've heard, the secret is to pay *lots* of attention to your server. My wife and I recently had a chance to eat at this location. The outside looked a little worn and drab, however the inside was nice and cozy with a good atmosphere. Our server was awesome. Very nice, super attentive, and funny. We order the sweet potato fries with the curry sauce. This is a standard that we have seen at a few pubs. Although these fries were no different they were still excellent; very tasty! My wife ordered the fettuccine and I ordered a chicken burger (cannot remember the exact name). What impressed us most was how quickly they got the food to our table. It was probably no less than 10 minutes before we had our meal. This was in spite of the fact that the place looked fairly busy when we went. The burger was a tad dry and the bun was a bit flat, but otherwise good eating. My one complaint is that the smoking area is near the windows, which allowed smoke to drift in to the dining room. Even closing most of the windows didn't seem to help. Thankfully it seemed to dissipate somewhat about halfway thru. It's a hard thing to regulate, but the smoking area should be to the side of the building and not 3 feet from the entrance. The food at Lion's Head has improved greatly in the past 18 months. The shepherd's pie is much better than your mother's, the fries are now handcut, the burgers are large and juicy, and the batter on the fish and chips is actually cooked through. Good for the kitchen for pulling up their collective socks. They also now have an excellent selection of local and other Canadian micro-brews on tap; there's always something interesting to try. read more

I from lions head her from darrells. both did burgers and fries. both orders were good food quality. here are the differences. lions head do own delivery, darrells use a local service. my order was smaller In amount of food roughly same price once you factor out her delivery charge. we live In north end. lions head 70 minutes,darrells 55 minutes. draw what conclusions you want from that considering neither place have done in at the moment read more
